However, as before, we are faced with the question: what are the main advantages of the injector over its carburetor counterpart. What exactly caused the failure of the carburetor-based fuel delivery systems? Here are the main ones:

Modification of the VAZ 21114

This type of unit practically does not differ from 2111 in design, but has an increased volume of up to 1600 cm³, and a capacity of 81 hp. The engines are very good at low end, with good traction, but the throttle response is not as sharp as on the 1.5-liter version. This is due to the "crushed" Euro norms.

Secondly, it was necessary to increase the liter capacity in order to raise the number of "horses" under the hood, while remaining in the same working volume. After all, not in all countries of the world, buyers welcomed "big" engines due to taxes. This means that, together with the "injector" from the 1.5-liter engine, it was really possible to remove at least 90 hp.

Porsche again

Without their own experience in the design of such structures, VAZ employees "from old memory" turned to Porsche specialists. In addition, the Soviet side needed the help of the Germans in aerodynamic fine-tuning of the body of the "dozen". The contract signed in 1987 included both aerodynamic work and the development of a 16-valve multipoint injection engine. At the same time, the working volume remained the same - 1.5 liters.

However, the VAZ did not sit idly by, shifting the efforts of developing a new engine onto the shoulders and hands of German "specialists"! Under the leadership of A. Simulman, a variant of a multi-valve block head with cast candle wells was assembled - that is, without insert parts.

The variant proposed by Porsche was less technologically advanced - in particular, it required a very complex-shaped gasket for the head of the block, for the manufacture of a mold for the production of which Soviet rubber goods specialists simply did not undertake. But the German firm Elring, to which VAZ specialists contacted, agreed to do everything in four months and 400,000 German marks! Both the first and the second did not suit VAZ at all, so it was necessary ... to develop the design by the forces of the VAZ RTI STC, for which one month and 1,500 rubles were enough.

However, later to technological development and fine-tuning the head casting, the Porsche specialists had to involve little-known and highly specialized companies from Austria and Italy. Wherein candle wells on the early 16-valve engines they were plug-in, and starting from the 124th engine they became cast, as originally conceived in Togliatti.

Special bench tests of the VAZ-21083 engine in Germany confirmed that its design and mechanical strength fully allow for such a "tuning", but subsequently, to reassure, the counterweights on the crankshaft for injection engines were slightly increased, and the block, when the engine was turned into a 16-valve, received an important revision: additional oil channels with nozzles pressed into them appeared in the main bearing supports, due to which the piston crowns are washed with oil under pressure.

The German side also developed and optimized the shape of the combustion chamber, due to which, even taking into account the high compression ratio (10.5), the VAZ-2112 engine worked without detonation on gasoline with an OCH 91-95.

In the early stages of fine-tuning the 16-valve engine, the components of the distributed injection of the German company Bosch familiar to Porsche specialists were used, but later (since 1990) the Soviet side began to actively cooperate with American company GM, having switched to the "Jem" system, not only for multi-valve engines, but also on conventional eight-valve valves of both the "eighth" and "classic" families. The irony of fate was that five years later, VAZ returned to the "Bosch" injection components on its engines, terminating cooperation with GM in this direction.

Long labor, short life

For the first time, the "top ten" with a new engine was officially demonstrated at the end of 1992 in the Moscow Manege, and in 1994 AvtoVAZ "lit up" a pre-production prototype of the VAZ-2110 at the Paris Motor Show.

I can point out that in personal use there were 2112s with such an engine and I had to change the valves twice after the belt was broken, even after 2000 km after installation (no defects, not over-stretched, etc.). To solve the problem with the bent valves, it is necessary to install pistons with grooves from modification 21124.

Modification of the VAZ 21114

This type of device is almost identical to the 2111 in terms of design, but has an increased volume of up to 1600 cm³ and a power output of 81 hp. The engines are very good underneath, with good traction, but the throttle response isn't as sharp as the 1.5-liter version. This is due to the “fragmented” euro norms.

This type of engine internal combustion does not flex the flap, so you don’t have to worry about the belt breaking, although you don’t have to admit it again. It should also be noted that this type is equipped with staged injection, respectively, with phase sensors installed in the head cylinder block.

21124-engine

This is the most favorite type of transmission for many VAZ owners. 2110 -2112, since it has a number of advantages over the others, for example:

  • increased power to 92 hp
  • low fuel consumption
  • no problems with "bent valves" as the piston winding provides a notch that prevents "bad" piston-valve meeting

It is because of all these advantages that many people prefer to buy cars with such engines. But if you look at the complexity of the service, this is natural. The 8-valve will be simpler in this respect.

If you want a simpler and more reliable design, then these are 8-valve machines. If you are an important force and dynamics. opted for the 16-valve version. But again, keep in mind the modification, so there is no problem in the event of a tape break.
