It is possible to use (if possible) the countershaft and belt drive to reduce the speed, but this will cause additional costs and complicate the design. High-speed motors are best suited for polishing jobs.

The acceptable power of electric motors for homemade emery is in the range from 200 to 400 watts. For a home sharpener, a standard 180 W motor from an old Soviet washing machine is enough. The number of its revolutions is practically in the range of 1350-1370 rpm, which is quite suitable for homemade emery. These motors are usually single phase and have capacitor starting. Three-phase specimens can also be used, they are connected to a standard 220 V network through a capacitor. If a person does not know how to do this, then you can seek advice from a specialist.

How to carve an adapter and other parts?

An adapter with a flange is turned on a lathe. To do this, you need to draw up a sketch of it and indicate on it the dimensions of the diameter of the electric motor shaft and the internal hole on the grinding stone. The best material for the adapter is tool steel.

The flange can be machined directly on the adapter, or you can make it separately. In the case of a separate version, it is pushed onto the shaft and fixed with a bolt and nut with a left-hand thread. These parts must be threaded, the direction of which depends on which direction the motor shaft rotates. If this happens along the clock, then the threaded connection should be left-handed, and if vice versa, then right-handed.

If everything is taken into account correctly, then when the emery is working, the nut will spontaneously twist and firmly hold the stone in its place. Otherwise, it will fly off and cause serious injury to the working person.

If there is no suitable cylindrical material for the adapter sleeves, then pieces of thick-walled pipes can be used for their manufacture, and the gaps between the motor shaft and the sleeve can be filled with an insulating tape made of fabric. But this design does not always provide the necessary safety during operation, as beats may appear.

If you take a pipe with an outer diameter of 3.2 cm, then the circle will be put on it without any reeling with an interference fit.

You can assemble the desired structure by using several bushings of suitable sizes. But they must fit tightly into each other. In this case, details such as nut and bolt are required. To install this screw, a hole is made in the motor shaft with a depth of 30-40 mm, and then, holding the roller in a vice, cut the thread for the bolt with a tap.

A nut with a left-hand thread can be turned on the same lathe or you can find the right one by removing this part from another machine.

What to do after making the required parts?

After all the necessary components are ready, they begin to assemble the emery. An adapter, a grinding wheel, a flange are put on the shaft, a nut is screwed on and all this is fixed with a bolt. The appearance of such a homemade emery is shown in Figure 1. To connect to the network, you may need a long two-wire wire and an electrical plug.

If the direction of rotation of the motor shaft needs to be changed, then this is done by switching the corresponding windings of the induction motor from the washing machine. If necessary, you can contact an electrician you know to accomplish this.

If the motor has 4 ends, then it will be quite simple to do this: it is enough to determine the windings with a tester and change the ends on one of them.
