Engine oil marking. Fluids: Engine oil, everything you need to know What does it mean in oil 5w30

The main criterion when choosing an engine oil is the recommendations of the engine manufacturer. For markings of the 5w30 type, the decoding of the parameter values will help determine the most suitable option engine oil for specific operating conditions. You have to choose from a number of designations allowed by the manufacturer for each engine.

Viscosity indices

Mark characteristics lubricants a combination of letters and numbers like 5w50, 10w 40 were proposed by specialists from the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE for short. The separator between the numeric indices in the form of the Latin letter "w" refers to the first of them and comes from the English word winter (winter). The numbers are viscosity indices. These values are based on SAE J300 APR97.

The first index indicates the starting properties of the oil in conditions of boundary temperature drops. It can take values from 0 to 25 in increments of 5 units. Oils 20w and 25w are not relevant for domestic conditions. Each low-temperature viscosity index corresponds to standard temperature values for which oil can be pumped through the system and cranked with a starter crankshaft engine.

The second indicator depends on the viscosity of the oil at operating temperature engine.

It can take values from 20 to 60 with an interval of 10 units. Each of them has a viscosity range at 100 ° C. For these values, the viscosity at 150 ° C and the shear rate of 10 6 s −1 are also normalized.

The dependence of oil properties on temperature conditions according to the SAE classification is presented in the form of a table:

Viscosity index Low temperature characteristics Performance at operating temperatures
Cranking condition Pumping condition Viscosity, mm² / s, for a temperature of 100 ° C minimum viscosity, mPa * s, at 150 ° C and shear rate 10 6 s −1
Ultimate viscosity, mPa * s (at temperature, ° C) minimal maximum
0W 6200 (−35) 60000 (−40)
5W 6600 (−30) 60000 (−35)
10W 7000 (−25) 60000 (−30)
15W 7000 (−20) 60000 (−25)
20 from 5.6 up to 9.3 2,6
30 from 9.3 up to 12.6 2,9
40 from 12.6 up to 16.3 2.9 (0W-40; 5W-40; 10W-40)
40 from 12.6 up to 16.3 3.7 (15W-40)
50 from 16.3 up to 21.9 3,7
60 from 21.9 up to 26.1 3,6

The standard shows that 5w30 oils must ensure a stable start of a working engine with a fully charged battery when the temperature drops to -30 ° C after a long stay. For the second parameter 30, the decoding gives that on a warm engine in the zone where the oil temperature is about 100 ° C, its viscosity should be in the range of 9.3.12.6 mm² / s. Similarly, you can determine the parameters that must correspond to oils 5w50, 10w 40 and others.

Criterias of choice

With the 1st parameter, everything is simple. The lower it is, the better. Cost becomes the limiting factor. Oil 0w, other things being equal, turns out to be more expensive than 5w and even more so 10w. For regions with a temperate climate, the overpayment for the stock in terms of starting properties does not seem justified.

The 0w and 5w values are typical for the highest quality synthetic oils. With indexes 5w and 10w, semi-synthetic oils, optimal in terms of combination of price and quality, are produced. Budget mineral oils are available in low temperature viscosities of 10w and 15w.

The second parameter is more complicated. There is no overall optimum high temperature viscosity for any engine. The designers correlate the dimensions of the gaps, types of surface treatment, the cross-section of the oil channels, pump performance, temperature modes of operation with the oil viscosity required for a given combination of conditions.

Until recently, the most popular type of oil in our country was semi-synthetic, with a viscosity of 10w 40. It was perfect for domestic front wheel drive vehicles and budget foreign cars with obsolete engines. Large enough clearances, the absence of turbines and variable valve timing systems allowed this.

Motorists, who prefer to drive aggressively, tended to flood "sports", as it was presented by marketers, 5w50 or 10w60 brands. For conventional engines this led to a change in the thickness of the lubricating film, an increase in hydraulic losses, a decrease in efficiency and an increase in operating temperatures with a correction for the resource.

In recent years, carmakers have prioritized fuel economy. As a result, the priorities began to shift towards a more liquid oil in operating modes 5w30 or 0w30. Reducing clearances and increasing fluidity have a positive effect on engine output and fuel consumption.

For the most modern Japanese and Korean engines, manufacturers indicate oils with a viscosity of 5w20 and 0w20 as the main ones. Such products provide excellent performance economy, but due to the work with the minimum thickness of the oil film, they require the highest quality parameters. Economical liquid oils are relatively expensive. The resource is depleted faster, so replacement should be done more often. European designers still prefer 30s.

Transmission standard

There is an SAE specification for transmission lubricants. Analogies with engine products are irrelevant in this case. Decoding 10w 40, 5w30 or any other engine oil to determine starting properties is very simple. It is enough to subtract the number 30 from the low-temperature index. This will be the approximate temperature in ° C at which a stable engine start is possible.

Marking 75w90 for "transmission" does not mean that it loses fluidity even at a positive temperature. The flow temperature parameters of these products are described in the SAE J306 standard. The low-temperature and high-temperature index values for the transmission products are chosen so that they do not overlap with the series of values for the engine grades. The values are 70W, 75W, 80W, 85W for the "winter" series and 80, 85, 90, 140, 250 - for the "summer".

As a value for the maximum permissible viscosity at low temperatures ah, the value of 150,000 cP is accepted. With a greater decrease in fluidity, there is a possibility of destruction of bearings and other elements of gearboxes and drive axles. The upper yield point should provide sufficient oil film thickness at 100 ° C, based on the potential point loads in the particular assembly.

So, for a product marked 75w90, the permissible operating temperature is -40 ° C, and the viscosity when heated to 100 ° C should be in the range of 13.5.24 mm² / s. The 75w90 marking is typical for synthetic products that are poured into gearboxes of modern passenger cars.

Among car owners, the most popular brands are engine oils 5w30 and 5w40, but not many people know what is the difference between them and what the oil marking means. This is an important question, so it's worth figuring out which oil is better.

What does the marking of engine oil 5w30 and 5w40 mean?

So, the first number from the marking of the oil denotes its viscosity at low temperatures, the second part means the fluidity of the substance in the warm season. This marking of the engine oil characterizes it according to the common SAE classification.

The numbers in the marking indicate the type of oil - both types are all-season, which is why it is so popular among motorists. This class of lubricating fluids is universal (all-season); it can be used in engines with any type of fuel at any temperature.

Decoding oil 5w30 and 5w40

Low temperature viscosity. The viscosity parameter is very important for the machine, since it determines the ability of the lubricant to remain on the surface of the motor for a long time. The most important property of engine oil is described by part 5 of the 5W index, and W means winter. Engine oil thickens in cold weather. The stronger its viscosity, the more effort the oil pump works. In these types of oil, the marking has the same first index.

High temperature viscosity. This parameter characterizes the second part of the marking. According to the established SAE classification for grade 5w30 at t 100 ° C, the viscosity of the substance will be from 9.3 to 12.6 mm kV / s. For grade 5w40 from 12.6 to 16.3 mm kV / s. Also high temperature viscosity lubrication is characterized by another important indicator: minimum viscosity at shear rate (106 s-1). For 5w30 oil, this indicator is lower (2.9) than for 5w40 oil, in which this indicator is (3.50).

Decoding 5w40 engine oil is quite simple:

1) 5W speaks of the low-temperature viscosity of the substance and allows starting a car at t -35 ° C.

2) We subtract 40 from the number in front of W. As a result, the resulting number (-35 ° C) will be the minimum oil temperature that will allow the internal combustion engine pump to pump it through the system, ensuring the lubrication of the parts as much as possible.

With such mathematical manipulations, one can easily determine the lowest cranking temperature of the engine. The decoding of 5w30 oil indicates that this parameter is -30 ° C. It is not difficult to determine this: we subtract 35 from the value of the engine start-up temperatures (5 ° C) and it becomes obvious that a decrease in the oil temperature leads to an increase in its viscosity, and it becomes quite difficult for the starter to crank the engine.

Which engine oil is better than 5w30 or 5w40

Engine oil in a car it is used for the sole purpose of forming an abundant oil film on the interacting engine parts. There are very small gaps between such parts in the motor (only a few microns), which require a constant high-quality lubricant. Which brand of lubricant is most suitable for each car, only the manufacturer knows.

Manufacturing companies, recommending the use of a certain type, first of all, take into account design features the power unit itself, and already based on these indicators - the characteristics of the oil. Therefore, when choosing an oil, it is recommended to follow the manufacturer's instructions.

It is important to consider that, in addition to the common SAE classification, all lubricants must also meet the requirements of the API and ACEA systems. The oil marking according to these classification systems is indicated on the packaging, but does not attract the attention of car owners.

As for the popular brands of 5w40 or 5w30 oil:

1) Brand 5w40 effectively holds the film, completely eliminating dry friction of parts. It is ideal for modern installations with high thermal stress.

2) Oil marked 5w30 has a much lower viscosity and is indispensable in cold weather, since it makes it easier to start the engine, but in hot weather it becomes too fluid. At t 120 - 140 ° C in the engine, the viscosity of 5w40 oil is 50% higher than the viscosity of oil marked 5w30.

5w30 or 5w40 engine oil - how to choose

It should be noted that cars with different years of production have their own recommendations regarding the most optimal choice engine oil. Experts recommend using 5w30 oil if your car is more than seven years old and its mileage does not exceed 70,000 kilometers.

If the mileage of the car exceeds this indicator, 5w40 oil should be filled, which is due to the fact that over time the gaps between the elements that make up the motor increase. Therefore, if an oil with a low viscosity index was previously used, then you should go to 5w40. In addition to viscosity, these engine oils differ in the amount of additives.

Also, professionals recommend monitoring the reaction of the car to different engine oils. The machine will tell you which oil is best for you. For example, on some models power units 5w30 oil often does not withstand increased revs(torque), which disturbs the stability of its operation. To avoid such situations, it is recommended to use the thickest grease in structure.

Compatibility of oils 5w30 and 5w40

There are situations when, in the event of a malfunction, it is necessary to urgently add oil to the engine. As a rule, the lubricant of the exact manufacturer whose product was originally poured into the engine is not always nearby.

The same goes for the viscosity index of the oil, and therefore you should know if oils marked 5w40 and 5w30 can be mixed. It should be noted that it is often not recommended to mix oil with fully synthetic basic framework with mineral oil. It is also not recommended to mix synthetics and semisynthetics, etc.

As for grease labeled 5W30 / 5W40, then theoretically these fluids can be mixed with minimal risks only if they are both products of the same manufacturer. Mixing products different manufacturers allowed only in emergency situation but given that they must have the same baseline.

From this we can conclude that semisynthetics are mixed only with semisynthetics, mineral oil mixed with a similar product, etc. However, it is impossible to answer unequivocally the question of whether it is possible to add to oil marked 5w40, which would seem to be an analogue - 5w30, since for each type of lubricant manufacturers use their own additive packages, which, after mixing, can enter into reaction.

Even if there were no consequences in the event of an emergency topping up of liquids, this is an emergency measure that cannot be used constantly. After repairing the breakdown, it is necessary to immediately drain the mixed grease from the motor and be sure to change oil filter, and in some cases it may even be necessary to flush the engine before changing the oil.

Let's sum up

When choosing an engine oil, you have to make a choice of a product of a particular brand, and not only the quality of the engine's operation, but also other significant parts of the car, often depends on it. Professionals recommend filling in an oil with a higher viscosity, since its use protects the engine parts better. Oils of the 5w30 and 5w40 brands are a reliable assistant to the car engine.

Their differences are insignificant, these types of oil are of sufficient quality and meet all European requirements. Usage quality oil will save the power unit of the car from breakdowns and will save on repairs or replacement of the motor.

The action of lubricants is aimed at ensuring normal work engine with fully sealed cylinders and high friction conditions. Properly selected engine oil maintains the proper functioning of the power unit and increases the service life of its components.

Types of oils

Lubricants in the automotive market are represented by three categories:

  • For gasoline engines.
  • For diesel engines.
  • Universal. Designed for both diesel and gasoline internal combustion engines.

Oils, depending on the season of use, are divided into three types:

  • Summer.
  • Winter - 5W and 10W.
  • All-season - 0W30 and 5W30.

The effectiveness of an engine oil depends on its physical properties, one of which is viscosity. It provides the ability of the lubricant to remain on the surface of the parts and maintain its fluidity. The parameter affects the protection of the engine against premature wear and friction during vehicle operation. If the declared viscosity does not correspond to the recommended by the manufacturer, the service life of the motor may decrease.

High temperature viscosity is not less important parameter, non-observance of which may lead to the need for an early overhaul due to engine running on high revs outside the limits of permissible norms.

When choosing a lubricant, the viscosity index is taken into account - it must correspond to the parameters recommended by the manufacturer. Using engine oil that is different from the required requirements can lead to engine failure and costly repairs.

How to choose engine oil

When selecting a lubricant for a car, several criteria are taken into account:

  • Viscosity index. It determines the ability to start the engine at negative temperatures. the environment... The smaller this parameter is, the easier it is to start the engine. Prevention of mechanical and chemical damage, the degree of uniform coverage of engine parts with a lubricant also depend on its viscosity.
  • Temperature conditions. It determines the efficiency of the selected engine oil during operation in the cold season and the temperature range in which the safe operation of the machine is ensured, regardless of the degree of engine heating.

The American engineering community SAE has adopted the above classification of fuels and lubricants. Oils that comply with this classification are marked with the SAE abbreviation.

Engine oils 5W30

The most demanded are synthetic lubricants labeled 5W30. The SAE decoding will be given below. The products of this group comply with the requirements and standards for car operation in urban areas and on suburban roads.

Features of 5W30 oils

The urban mode of car operation is characterized by:

  • Long work engine idling.
  • Being in traffic jams.
  • Regular short distance travel.
  • Large amount of dust in the air.

These factors have a negative effect on the engine's working life. The key to long-term functioning and maintaining the technically sound condition of the motor is knowledge of the marking and decoding of 5W30 oil.

The unique formula of synthetic lubricants is based on base oil and an additive package that gives the finished fluid the following characteristics:

  • Protects the engine from premature wear and friction.
  • Resistance to oxidation processes when used in high humidity conditions.

Additive packages

The additives used are indicated in the name of the product and affect its decoding. 5W30 motor oils are developed for a specific type of engine and provide its protection thanks to a set of additives. The substances used and their properties must comply with the quality standards for lubricating fluids.

The properties of engine oils depend on the heating temperature of the engine and the intensity of its operation. According to the decoding, semi-synthetics 5W30 can heat up to 150 degrees.

Selection of oils 5W30

The car manufacturer specifies the technical specifications that are used when choosing an engine oil. Lubricant approval is issued by engine type, not brand and model vehicle... For this reason, the selected engine oil must meet the requirements of the carmaker.

The choice of 5W30 synthetics for decoding depends on the characteristics of the engine, the age of the car and the characteristics of the operating conditions. For cars older than 5-7 years, mineral engine oil is better suited, since its use can reduce the consumption of lubricant and increase the working life of the power unit.

Changing the engine oil

Operating conditions, engine condition and vehicle mileage affect the frequency of lubricant changes. The best option- 10 thousand kilometers of run. The replacement period is increased by one and a half to two times when using two types of fuel and is reduced when operating the car in difficult conditions. The amount of engine oil in the engine is checked every two weeks using special probe.

Decoding standards 5W30 and 5W40

All 5W30 and 5W40 engine oils comply with environmental norms and standards of SAE, API and ACEA and are approved for use on gasoline and diesel engines of BMW, Man, Volvo, Renault cars. Lubricants are laboratory tested and controlled at every stage of production. The characteristics declared on the decoding of 5W30 must meet the requirements specified by the automaker.

Advantages of synthetics 5W30

The 5W30 series synthetic motor oils offer the following benefits:

  • Protection of engine components from chemical and mechanical stress.
  • They create a super-strong oil film on the surface of the parts.
  • They have anti-corrosion and antioxidant properties.
  • Protection of the engine against wear and increased friction.
  • Extends the engine oil change period.
  • Possibility of use in different types engines.

Synthetic engine oil, according to the decoding 5W30, can be used all year round, maintaining operational properties and eliminating the need for seasonal shift.

Decoding of 5W30 series oils

Marking lubricants category 5W30 is carried out according to SAE standards. Decoding 5W30 allows you to determine the temperature regime of the oil, properties and other nuances of operation:

  • The minimum temperature at which the characteristics of the oil remain unchanged is indicated by the first digit of the marking. In the decoding of 5W30, the number "5" means that the grease can be used at temperatures not lower than -30 degrees. It can also hide the speed of the lubricant passing through the main channels of the system and the energy consumption.
  • The time of year in which it is desirable to operate the oil is indicated by a letter. W-index greases are designed for winter use.
  • The maximum temperature at which the oil retains its characteristics is marked with the last number: 30 means that the operation of the lubricant is possible at an air temperature of no more than +30 degrees. In the W40 marking, the figure means that the oil can be used in summer at ambient temperatures up to +40 degrees.

Synthetic diesel engine oil

For vehicles equipped with diesel engines with a dual cleaning system exhaust gases, the 5W30 series low ash engine oil was developed. It is made according to accepted environmental standards. Can be used in vehicles with particulate filters, catalysts and turbocharging.

The composition of 5W30 engine oils for diesel engines includes additives developed using innovative technologies. Their action is aimed at reducing the amount of emitted substances and increasing protective functions. The content of chlorine, phosphorus and sulfur bonds in synthetic additives is reduced.

The properties of 5W30 engine oils allow them to be poured into diesel engines equipped with turbines and particulate filters:

  • Keeping the engine parts clean.
  • Providing quick access of oil to working elements.
  • Stabilization of the working pressure regardless of the degree of load on the engine.
  • Reduced fuel consumption.
  • Reducing the amount of exhaust gases.

5W30 Diesel Engine Oils provide long term operation of gas neutralizers and retain the characteristics of the motor. Carmakers allow the use of such a synthetic oil, which allows preserving the possibility of preferential passage Maintenance during the warranty period.

Modern motor oils of the 5W30 series significantly reduce fuel consumption and are considered universal lubricants approved for use in engines of domestic and foreign cars. Materials comply with accepted standards and regulations. Car manufacturers recommend many 5W30 category engine oils for use, including those for diesel power units. When choosing a lubricant, it is advisable to pay attention to the decoding of the marking, which indicates the conditions of its operation.

Engine oils exist to protect engine components from friction and to ensure satisfactory engine performance while maintaining cylinder tightness. Correct selection of oil contributes to good work system for a long time. 5W30 grease is one of the most popular among various synthetic lubricants.

The use of 5W30 oil is justified both in cool summer and winter, it is a classic all-season lubricant suitable for a wide range of temperatures. Index 5 guarantees a reliable cold start of the motor in winter at temperatures down to -30 degrees, while in summer the mating surfaces are effectively lubricated, and excess heat is perfectly removed.

5W30 is suitable for vehicle operation, both in dense city traffic and on country roads and highways.

Many motorists do not know what the 5W30 marking means. There is a special base for decoding engine oil markings.
The API (Petroleum Institute) defines the basic classification of automotive engine oils. The API abbreviation on the packaging does not indicate a quality mark, but rather different performance properties of the lubricant.

According to the SAE data on the back of the lubricant packaging, it can be determined for which temperature conditions it is suitable.
The first figure indicates how quickly and smoothly the oil will be pumped through the lubrication system and supplied to the working surfaces, as well as the amount of energy expended in the battery.

The letter W indicates that this lubricant can be used in winter time... Further, numbers are written that indicate the possibility of using oil in the summer at above-zero temperatures.

Temperature regime

If the lubricant has an indicator of 30, this means that it should be used at a temperature of no more than +25 degrees. Thus, the 5W30 marking means that such a lubricant can be used at temperatures ranging from -30 to +25 degrees, this oil is all-season and synthetic.

In winter, this lubricating fluid will not lose its properties at a temperature not lower than -30 degrees, and in summer - not higher than +25, provided that the engine works correctly.

Advantages

Synthetic 5W30 oil has excellent performance and many benefits. This lubricant is excellent for urban vehicles where the engine components are adversely affected:

  1. Work on idle long time
  2. Long stay in traffic jams
  3. Vehicle operation over short distances
  4. Increased dustiness of the atmosphere
  5. Lubricant 5W30, thanks to special additives and its unique formula, has the following functions:
  6. Protects engine parts from damage
  7. Removes carbon deposits from surfaces
  8. Reduces the effects of corrosion
  9. Cools parts and assemblies of a running engine

This grease does not lose its useful qualities at a temperature in the system equal to 150 degrees.

Synthetic or semi-synthetic

Synthetic and sex synthetic oil differ both in properties and in price. Synthetics have great opportunities and is more expensive, semisynthetics are more expensive and cheaper.

Synthetic oil - artificially created. It is made from oil with the addition of other substances that transfer certain qualities to the future lubricant, by mixing using a special technology. Benefits of synthetic oil:

  1. Resistant to temperature extremes
  2. Significantly increases engine life, with the right choice
  3. Works better under load conditions (idle, start-up and warm-up)
  4. Resistant to temperature extremes
  5. Economical. Synthetic oil is used up more slowly because it penetrates the smallest gaps.

The disadvantage of synthetic oil is its high cost.

Semi-synthetic oil is made from additives and refined oil, the cost of which is lower, therefore, the total cost of the oil is lower. Advantages and disadvantages of a semi-synthetic lubricant:

  1. Creates normal conditions engine operation
  2. Protects against wear
  3. Possesses good penetrating power
  4. Low volatility
  5. High technical performance
  6. Affordable price - on average it costs 1.5 times cheaper than synthetic

Semi-synthetics are usually used as a compromise option. It is less efficient, has a higher flow rate, and is more sensitive to conditions.

Synthetic and semi-synthetic lubricating fluid they also have different degrees of viscosity, and therefore different effects on the motor. The choice of the type of lubricant depends on the mileage of the vehicle.

For cars with significant mileage, it is better to use a thicker synthetic oil. Due to its viscosity, it fills the increased gaps, allowing the motor to operate longer.

For new car better fit more liquid oil, which will penetrate into the smallest gaps. At correct selection To technical specifications auto and synthetics and semi-synthetics can ensure the correct operation of the engine.

The situation when the question arises of mixing 5W30 oils from different manufacturers arises quite often. Often this happens with used cars, which have a serious oil consumption and need to be topped up frequently.

It is not possible to mix different brands of oil unless urgently needed. Different manufacturers have different additives and temperature conditions! Incorrectly combined oils can clot at high temperatures!

But there are situations when, for example, an oil leak on the road is suddenly discovered, and in order to get to the nearest service station, it is urgent to top up, but there is no suitable lubricant from the required manufacturer.

In an emergency, when mixing oils from different manufacturers cannot be avoided, you need to adhere to a number of rules in order to minimize risks:

  1. You need to know exactly what kind of oil is poured into the engine
  2. Synthetics can be mixed with synthetics, semi-synthetics only with semi-synthetics
  3. Upon arrival at the car service, the oil should be drained, the engine should be flushed and filled with new oil.

It would seem that it could be easier than buying a canister of SAE 5w30 engine oil for your four-wheeled "pet". But in practice, everything is not so simple. It is sometimes difficult for novice car enthusiasts to understand the terms and abbreviations used by various manufacturers of cars, spare parts and components.

It turns out that there are many types and types of lubricants produced by different companies, and SAE mark 0w 30 for an ordinary user does not carry any information.

Of course, we are not talking about the fact that every car owner must understand the characteristics of 0w30 and 5w30 to the subtleties, but it does not hurt to have a general idea of the existing varieties and classifications.

SAE classification of oils

A number of requirements are put forward for engine oils, the most important of which are viscosity and its dependence on temperature. In most developed countries, the SAE classification is used, taking into account the viscosity-temperature and other characteristics of the grease. This acronym is derived from the Society of Automotive Engineers.

The organization appeared at the beginning of the 20th century and brought together the leading US automotive industry specialists at that time. It still exists today, becoming one of the most popular and reputable international centers involved in the development of technical documentation, promotion of educational projects, exhibition activities, etc.

According to the SAE classification, all motor lubricants are divided into 12 classes - from 0w to 60. The first 6 classes (0w - 25w, multiples of 5) refer to winter types, and the second six (10 - 60, multiples of 10) are used in summer operating conditions. The letter "w" in symbol points to winter period application (from the English winter - winter). SAE 5w oil, for example, is a typical winter lubricant.

All-season oils, and most of them, have two numbers in the marking at once. The first characterizes the dynamic properties of the oil at subzero temperatures, the second concerns the viscosity of the oil in the summer. Thus, the SAE 0w 30 and 5w 30 oils in question are multigrade oils.

For new motorists, there is universal advice on how to choose the oil for your car. First you need to look in the vehicle's service book. It contains, among other things, information on the recommended brand of engine oil (SAE 0w30, 5w30, etc.).

Engineers at the plant have already tested all systems and have concluded that this oil is optimal for your engine. It is he who needs to be poured during maintenance. Of course, the use of a different brand of grease instead of 0w30 will not lead to fatal consequences, but it can adversely affect the operation of the engine in extreme conditions.

Classification of oils by viscosity

Features of greases from different manufacturers

Despite the fact that we are talking about an international classification, in practice, products of the same class (SAE 5w, 0w, etc.), but manufactured at different enterprises, may differ slightly in properties and, of course, in cost. Let's consider these differences using the example of 5w 30. Laboratory studies show that its kinematic viscosity at 100 ° C may differ by different manufacturers within 20%, although it falls within the range of values for 5w30.

Viscosity at low temperatures also may not coincide. Approximately the same research results for 0w30 for different companies. That's why experienced motorists try to buy oil from one manufacturer. In practice, the additives used by various developers are of great importance. As a result, materials of approximately the same viscosity can differ in detergent and antioxidant properties, as well as in waste consumption.

For example, motorists who prefer manufacturers that produce inexpensive semi-synthetic SAE oil 5w or 0w, are forced to periodically top it up to the level. If you use the same 5w, but with low consumption on waste, then you can forget about frequent topping up. But this oil is usually much more expensive.

Therefore, before giving preference to one or another manufacturer, it will not be superfluous to consult with specialists and experienced motorists.
