The Chinese have been convinced for a long time and, it seems, for a long time that it is more important in the market - low price, and if a cheap car also has good looks, then success is guaranteed. There is some truth in this statement, because even our people have accepted Chinese cars as affordable foreign cars. Judge for yourself: sales of Tiggo for this, not the most successful, six months amounted to a considerable 714 copies, and X60 already 3315 units - more than any of the crossovers of Ford, Honda, Subaru, Suzuki or San Yong ". The superiority of the Lifan is explained by pricing policy firms - X60 costs from 654,900 to 729,900 rubles. "Chery" simultaneously sells the previous generation Tiggo FL, creating a competitor within the brand, and Tiggo 5 brought the Ambition Line into the new series, and its ambition is manifested, among other things, in the price - 750,000-975,900 rubles.

"Tiggo" is really more modern - it looks and rides. But all these touchscreens and keyless entry, security systems and the smell of phenol we leave for routine tests. The main thing for us is the off-road capabilities of the car, which depend on the 136-horsepower engine, variator and chinese tires GitiComfort SUV 520 in dimensions 225/65 R17.

The X60, in comparison with its rival, looks like an old soldier in a fresh uniform - the latest restyling added diodes to the optics, changed the radiator grille and updated the multimedia. Lifan has everything from the previous generation: the 128-horsepower engine is unpretentious, the gearbox is mechanical, and the wheels are on more utilitarian 16 disks with Korean tires Kumho Sense 215/65 R16.

Looking at these crossovers, it's hard to tell which one is bigger and which one is higher. The streamlined shape of the Tiggo 5 conceals its size and makes the silhouette more elevated off the ground. The more boxy Lifan seems to be larger and squat. The front overhang of the Chery is 907 mm, the rear overhang is 989, for the Lifan it is 830 and 895 mm, respectively. "Tiggo 5" is not saved by larger wheels, 19 mm radius difference does not greatly increase the ground clearance, which even according to the passport data is 163 mm against 179 for the X60.

But the X60 did not cause any problems with a short steep climb. The angle of the ramp was enough for him: when the front wheels rolled over the edge of the pit, a decent headroom remained under the bottom.

"I couldn't do it ..."

At first glance, the slight difference in power and traction (8 hp and 18 Nm) in favor of "Chery" is in fact not compensated for by the weight of the "Lifan", even less by 200 kg. The main thing is that the X60 does not have enough torque. Any, even the smallest obstacle on the road becomes a challenge for the engine, and you have to very precisely dose the effort on the gas pedals, catching the moment between the wheels slipping and the desire to stall the 1.8-liter Chinese "four". The very long first gear of the manual transmission and its high gear ratio are also a disservice. Therefore, on the off-road, you have to constantly half-squeeze the clutch, which at the same time slips and, of course, burns. Moreover reverse the car climbs much more willingly, so it is sometimes easier to reverse out of a trap in the form of, for example, a gentle slope with grass and moss.

A variator is installed on "Chery", so the torque is supplied smoothly and almost without restrictions. The crossover is much easier to climb up the hill and drive through the field plowed a couple of years ago. But now the sticky track becomes an ambush for him. If the Lifan engine can be spun, let go of the clutch pedal and, with the strongest slip, get out onto a hard surface, then the variator does not allow the Tiggo 5 engine to reach high revs: the gas is on the floor, and the crankshaft does not revolve above 2500 rpm.

"Snow" is not suitable for driving in a rut, when you can leave due to the high speed of rotation of the wheels, and to use the "reduced" mode there is simply not enough moment. As in that anecdote about a horse: “Well, I didn’t do it…” All because of the same smooth operation of the variator on the “Chery” it is more difficult to get out of the way. If the transmission was focused on off-road, at least in gear ratios, then the lack of moment or the peculiarities of the variator operation in Chinese cars would be less visible.

As we agreed, our subjects lack the slightest hint of four-wheel drive... That is, in fact, these are cars raised above the road with a conventional cross-axle differential in the front axle, which compensates for the difference in wheel rotation in turns. But in terms of off-road capabilities, it would have been better off. After all, it was precisely because of the differential that Cheri could not get out of the rut - the left wheel skidded, and the right one, which had the best grip, remained motionless. On serious off-road vehicles, blockages cope with this problem, on most crossovers - traction control system, which, receiving data on the speed of rotation of the wheels, instructs the brakes to restrain slippage. Although in the Tiggo 5 configuration, there is a counter-axle, but in a rut, either he did not have enough strength to redistribute the moment, or desire. Lifan has no electronic assistants at all.

On a dry surface, their characteristics are very similar, but as soon as dampness appears, the GitiComfort installed on the Cherie begin to fail. They are poorly adapted for driving on wet surfaces, and even after swimming in the usual puddle on a dirt road, the car begins to drag around until the tires dry out. This means that in a wet track the wheels of the Tiggo 5 clung worse than the Kumho, which gave Lifan some advantage. But don't assume that installing off-road tires will significantly increase flotation. It is very likely that the heavy rubber and more resistance will absorb all the forces of the weaker off-road motors.

Since no one considers these cars as off-road conquerors, no one makes special equipment for them either. The market is full of various aluminum, steel, chrome plated kits for car decoration and customization. Moreover, there is a lot of such decor for both "Cheri" and "Lifan". But among the shiny body kit, which prevents serious damage to the body and at the same time reduces the geometric cross-country ability, you can find quite useful things like protection of the engine crankcase and gearbox. Naturally, you can put the tires toothed, but almost the same size. A larger radius will not accommodate the wheel arches, and it will be even more difficult for weak motors to turn heavy wheels.

Having mastered the dimensions of the crossovers and adapting to the peculiarities of controlling the thrust of the motors, I made my way on them deeper and deeper. Not all obstacles were given the first time, some even from the third, but most of them in the end we overcame. "Chery" passed them more accurately, but more efficiently, on the "Lifan" more often it was necessary to take them on the move, thanks to the greater ground clearance and small overhangs. The Tiggo had to be backed up from the outside, making sure that nothing was torn under the belly of the car. But they were driving! This means that their owners should not be accused of stinginess. Acquisition front wheel drive crossovers it is quite justified - they will take you to the dacha, parking in the forest or biting places on the reservoir. And at the same time, compared to all-wheel drive, such cars have less fuel consumption, maintenance is easier and cheaper, and the simpler the mechanism, the less often it breaks. The main thing is to understand their capabilities and be able to use their advantages. And this already depends on the driver, not on the car.

But the theory does not always coincide with practice, because in certain conditions different advantages and disadvantages of cars are revealed

Chevrolet niva for several years now it has been in high demand for Russian market... There are two main reasons for this: relatively low cost and excellent off-road properties. By the way, you can see for yourself if you decide to buy a Niva in Samara. The fact is that this car is sold at an extremely low price in the Samara-Auto South car dealership. However, after the appearance in Russia of a large number of Chinese crossovers, the position of "Shnivy" was somewhat shaken. In this article, we decided to compare the domestic development with two Chinese models: Lifan X50 and Chery tiggo.

Initial configurations

If you look at the 2018 Chevrolet Niva cars, you will see that the most affordable version now costs more than 502 thousand rubles (excluding promotions and all kinds of discounts). A very tempting price, especially against the background of a total rise in the cost of transport. However, we note right away that in this case there will be practically nothing in the crossover - you will find in it only the front power windows, preparation for the audio system and the central locking.

If you take the basic configuration of the Lifan X50, called "Comfort", then you can find air conditioning, lifts for all doors and even a simple audio system in it. But this car will cost you 80-90 thousand more. Chery Tiggo 2 has equipment similar to Lifan, but at the same time it costs more than 600 thousand rubles.

Medium configurations

If you look at the main sales of Chevrolet Niva cars, you can see that most of them fall on the average configuration, denoted by the letters LE. Its features include the presence of a snorkel, roof rails, air conditioning and alloy wheels... All in all, it is great for off-road driving. The cost of the car is about 540 thousand rubles.

As for the Tiggo 2, its price increases to 700 thousand rubles, but the equipment does not change much: alloy wheels, heated front seats, LED optics and other small things. At the "Lifan" medium grade is "top-end", so you can find a multimedia system, a sunroof and a rear-view camera in it, but at the same time its cost does not exceed 700 thousand.

We will not consider the "top" options for these models, as now you can give advice on their purchase. If you are financially constrained or want to support domestic manufacturer, then we, of course, advise you to take the Chevrolet Niva. However, if you have additional funds, you should take a closer look at the Chinese Lifan X50. The Cherry model seemed too expensive to us.

The box works controversially, it takes a long time to get used to it due to the fact that it behaves periodically according to its own will, and not according to your will. The car has very large rolls and, as a result, rolls over in all corners.

But that's not all, visibility is poor, wide racks interfere, parking is inconvenient. A problem with spare parts and a very long wait. Yes, outwardly he is attractive, but not yet worth the money.

Chery Tiggo 3 - 4th place

According to the owners, this device scored 3.5 points out of 5. But we took away another 0.5 from it. The variator is terribly dull, it's just scary to overtake. The second significant disadvantage is the lack of sound insulation. The multimedia system is adapted only for English and Chinese, that is, a Russian citizen cannot read anything on the display in Russian. And the seals do not fit tightly to the doors, and to be honest, they do not fit at all.

Because the soundproofing of the wheel arch liners is vital for him, he, like any "Chinese", is noisy. Yes, in the X60, the plastic is unevenly fitted in places, you need to be prepared for this and possible crickets, and the X60 is not informative instrument cluster, it reads badly, plus, you need to monitor the state of the paintwork. I would like to tighten it up. Otherwise, it is a spacious and unpretentious device.

DFM AX7 - 1st place

According to the owners' reviews, DFM AX7 scored 4.5 points out of 5, and only because the owners can be counted on one hand. If you do without unnecessary nit-picking, then this is an absolutely normal crossover, also in a complete set, as not every premium has.

Mistrust in Chinese manufacturers is gradually becoming a thing of the past, thanks to which their products are increasingly winning the hearts of Russian consumers. The reason for this is getting the same premium features and packaging as the established brands. At the same time, there is no need to overpay for the "name" of the car - the buyer gets what he expects. But as soon as they start to raise the price tags, they will have no place in our market. That is why Geely left Nizhny, Haval and the once promising Zotye did not take root.

For the first time, I saw the X70 in concept status at the Shanghai Motor Show 2015 - that prototype in no way resembled the current production model either in size - the exhibit was much larger, nor in design - the exterior was dominated by the features of a brutal SUV. With the elaboration of the design, it was also rather weak, which I was convinced of by looking under the bottom: the most ordinary plywood frame on two axes appeared to my eyes! I paid tribute to the ingenuity of the Chinese, but since then - both in Beijing and in Shanghai - I have been constantly studying the underside of the machine. So, having received a new X70 for the test, which has been sold in my homeland since the end of last year, I could not resist - it seems like a real one, you can go!

Lifan X70 has already been appreciated by our compatriots: not least due to the low price, every month it finds its customers 400-500 cars - an indicator completely unattainable for any other Chinese car in Russia, including Chery Tiggo 5, the peak of sales of which so far falls in April, when 168 people chose him. As usual, rivals attribute the success of Lifan not only to the price, but also to a disproportionately wider dealer network, however, in the case of the X70, of course, the matter is also in the car itself, which bypassed several competitors in one fell swoop.

You can buy gearboxes, a power system, and even the entire box, however, minimize the thickness of the body metal without sacrificing, say, the level passive safety, the Chinese cannot yet.

By the way, about the suppliers. As you know, Chery produces its own CVTs, for which the Wuhu Chery Transmission company was created back in 1997. Later, it became part of the Zhejiang Wanliyang consortium, which now makes a CVT for the Lifan X70 - recall that the company from Chongqing previously collaborated with the Belgian manufacturer Punch. Meanwhile, despite the single address for sending the variators, they are different in design, and give different shades of consumer properties of Lifan X70 and Chery Tiggo 5.

As for the Lifan X70, it is not at all aimed at "extremism" - its brake pedal is relatively soft, and at the same time comfortable with an even characteristic, acceleration is even more leisurely than that of the Tiggo 5, and the engine should only be released when typing in the dynamics of the gas pedal, does not remain hanging at medium speeds, like in the Tiggo 5, but immediately drops to about 1,200 rpm. It is interesting that the same story happened with its predecessor - X60, and I even made a request on this occasion - I thought wet clutches would open, revs dropped, and then the electronics gave a small load to the motor, making the gear ratio as high as possible ...


In fact, almost everything is so, with the exception that the multi-plate clutch does not open. This, of course, is super-economical - in the city, the X70 completely breaks the rival in terms of fuel efficiency, but this affects the dynamics, to put it mildly, not in the best way, because after each gas discharge, you have to spin the engine again. However, the driver of the X70 can be advised to first turn on the L mode at the start, then, when the speed reaches 50-60 km / h, "release" the variator, but in no case take his foot off the gas.


And again we return to the letter L, but this time on the Tiggo 5, and again remember that the Chery CVT has a torque converter, but the Lifan does not. This gives an interesting feature of Chery: in normal mode, the "donut" is blocked only when a speed of 30 km / h is reached, but if you switch the selector to L mode, the electronics excludes it from work already at 15 km / h. This knowledge will help the driver to make the most of the potential of the transmission, not only when driving uphill and downhill, but also on difficult terrain. Here, the presence of a torque converter in itself is an advantage: it will not allow you to overdo it with traction and rip the wheels into slipping. But the Lifan driver will have to rely only on his off-road driving skill, although I would advise him to drive off only on dry primers and not tempt fate.


The fact is that the Tiggo 5 has one indisputable advantage - a larger climbing angle, which, however, “floats” depending on the version of the transmission. In the version with a manual gearbox, it is 35% (19 degrees), but on the variator it is already 42% (22 degrees). And what about Lifan? Alas - only 30% (16 degrees). A lot or a little for Chinese front-wheel drive compact crossovers? Let's remember that the big and mighty - at least in appearance - Haval H9 has this indicator ... only 26.5 degrees. How many European or Japanese off-road vehicles, to which the "Chinese" are so drawn? Yes, many have had 42-45 degrees for a long time ...

So, we state that the Tiggo 5 with its more "condo" and frankly outdated interior still has advantages in field driving over the Lifan X70. Lifan X70, in turn, could unconditionally, at least within the framework of this pair, determine the leader of urban driving, if not for one circumstance.

With dynamic acceleration and partly with intensive braking, the new X70 exhibits an extremely unpleasant feature: the car just strives to jump off the straight line - the steering wheel convulses in the driver's hands. In Lifan X60, this feature was not so clearly developed, and in the competitive Tiggo 5, although it is noticeable to the “naked” eye, it still has practically no effect on the impression of the car's handling.

Interestingly, the Tiggo 5 also has different drive shafts to the wheels (in the sense - without an intermediate support), but the steering wheel does not beat during acceleration. At the same time, we note that the Tiggo 5 has an electric booster on the variator version, and the X70 has a good old "hydrach", which should smooth out at least a little ...

And here is the opposite situation for you - the work of the front suspension. The settings of the elastic elements of both rivals leave much to be desired, but if you look at the matter from the perspective of city driving, the Lifan X70 gives you where better comfort when moving single irregularities. However, he is not sinless either: if you gape, do not drop the speed below 30 km / h, and on a bumpy policeman he will shake so that his hand will inevitably reach for the Internet: has not the precious Lada released some SUV in the compact class?
