The British company Mini is a premium car manufacturer despite its compact size. So the interior greets the driver and his companions with high-quality finishing materials, neat assembly and rich equipment. The seats of the first row look just perfect: the anatomical shape of the back, super rollers for lateral support of the hips and back, a long pillow, electric adjustment, and the driver's seat even with memory of settings. A wide range of front seat adjustments will make it possible to comfortably accommodate even people over 190 km tall.

The driver's workplace and the organization of the front of the cabin are also at a height: a compact steering wheel, large tachometer and speedometer radii, a modern MINI Professional multimedia system with an 8.8-inch LED touchscreen (navigation, Bluetooth, Internet), a convenient climate control unit -control, buttons for auxiliary equipment managers in aviation style, LED background lighting of the cabin, genuine leather, decorative inserts made of wood or carbon. The British crossover has been produced since 2010 and in a little over two years has managed to earn a reputation, albeit an expensive, but stylish and comfortable car with a choice of engine, gearbox and drive type.

The appearance of the tested "Briton" can cause a lot of controversy and misinterpretation, the car is liked by some motorists and disliked by others. As the saying goes: "there are no comrades in taste and color", but ... "fellow countryman" (as the name of the model is translated) looks, firstly, original and stylish, and secondly, in full accordance with the family resemblance to all cars of the Mini company. After restyling, the new Mini Countryman received a different design of the front end of the body, the changes are minimal. There is a new facing for the radiator grille and lower air intake, the foglights are of a smaller size. The second row is now a full-fledged sofa by default, separate armchairs can be ordered for a surcharge. The three of us will be cramped, it is better for two passengers to sit. The salon is stylish, but ... not comfortable, finishing materials do not correspond to the status and price of the car. The initial configuration includes ABS, CBS with Brake Assist, a DCS dynamic control system, a height-adjustable steering wheel with electric power steering, air conditioning (climate control is an option for 24,500 rubles), a Mini CD radio tape recorder and other little things.
To customize the 2013 Mini Countryman, there are a ton of crossover interior and exterior options, as well as basic packages:

  • Diesel Cooper SD All4 Countryman with an engine running on heavy fuel 2.0 liters (143 hp) with 6 manual gearboxes reaches a maximum speed of 198 km / h, the milestone of 100 km / h is overcome in 9.3 seconds. Average diesel consumption is 4.6 liters.

Special attention was paid to MINI John Cooper Works Countryman - a hurricane crossover with all-wheel drive ALL4, a suspension lowered by 10 mm and a highly accelerated 1.6-liter gasoline engine (218 hp) with a 6 manual transmission (or automatic transmission 6 automatic transmission) - up to 100 km / h in 7 sec, top speed 225 (223) mph, fuel consumption from 6.2 liters on the highway to 10.7 liters in the city. The car is exclusive and expensive - to buy it, you need to pay a cost of 1,675,000 rubles. In fact, it is a high-speed car with an all-wheel drive transmission, giving confidence even on slippery roads.
Test Drive Mini Countryman 2013 allows us to talk about wonderful handling and enviable directional stability for many crossovers, but there are also disadvantages. Rigid, short-travel suspension, insufficient power of the initial gasoline engine, high fuel consumption almost 2 times higher than the manufacturer's data (Cooper S All4 Countryman consumes about 13 liters in mixed mode), high cost of the car itself, expensive options and maintenance costs.

How much it costs in Russia: the updated Mini Countryman crossover will appear in the spring of 2013. The manufacturer assures that the sale will be made at the price of pre-styling machines. If the changes in the appearance of the car turned out to be only "evolutionary", then in other aspects of the transformation they turned out to be more significant - it noticeably enlarged, stepping into the C-class, "moved" to a new platform, received an updated palette of power plants, tried on a more ergonomic interior and acquired modern "Chips".

After the change of generation, "Countryman" retained the relief forms and proportions of its predecessor, but began to look not only more attractive and harmonious, but also noticeably more masculine. In front, the SUV looks at the world with aggressive lighting technology and grins with the "mouth" of the radiator grille, and at the back it flaunts spectacular vertical lights and a powerful bumper. Yes, and in profile the five-door did not disappoint - the outlines characteristic of Mini models with a short hood, "swollen" wheel arches and a "hanging" roof.

In terms of its external dimensions, the “second” Mini Countryman is a full-fledged “player” of the C-segment: the crossover is 4299 mm long, 1557 mm high and 1822 mm wide (excluding mirrors). The gap between the pairs of wheels in the "Briton" fits into 2670 mm, and the clearance under the bottom reaches 165 mm.

The interior of "Countryman" is beautiful, intricate and attentive even to small details, but at the same time less cartoonish than its predecessor.

In the direct introduction of the driver is an excellent three-spoke "steering wheel" with developed tides on the rim and control elements and an analog instrument cluster with a speedometer at the head.

The plump center console, as before, is headed by a huge "round", into which the screen of a multimedia complex with a diagonal of 6.5-8.8 inches is inscribed (in the "base" there is a two-color display of 2.7 inches), and below there are three massive regulators of the climate system and "family" tumblers.

Inside, the car boasts not only a high-quality level of assembly, but also decent finishing materials.

The Mini Countryman has a five-seater interior in all versions, and there is enough free space for a serene life both in the front and in the back.

The front seats have an impeccable structure with dense lateral bolsters and solid adjustment ranges, and the second row of seats "flaunts" a good backrest profile with a variable inclination, moderately rigid cushion and longitudinal adjustment in the interval of 130 mm.

The trunk of the second generation "Countryman" is not only correctly configured and high-quality finished, but also spacious: its volume in the standard form is 450 liters (under the shelf), and with the folded "gallery" - 1309 liters (under the roof). The rear sofa transforms in a ratio of 40:20:40, and even forms a flat platform.

Specifications. For the second "release" of the British crossover, five modifications are provided (and one of them is hybrid), which are equipped with a 6-speed "mechanics" (not available only for the most powerful diesel engine) or an 8-band "automatic" Steptronic, and the gasoline-electric version is equipped with 6- step automatic transmission. By default, the entire traction reserve of the five-door goes to the front wheels, and for a surcharge, an all-wheel drive system with an electro-hydraulic Haldex clutch of the 5th incarnation is offered, which activates the rear axle (where up to 50% of the moment can be transmitted).

  • Under the hood performance Cooper accommodates a B38 three-cylinder gasoline unit with a volume of 1.5 liters with a turbocharger, one balance shaft, 12-valve timing, direct injection and variable exhaust and intake phases, producing 136 horsepower at 4400-6000 rpm and 220 Nm of maximum potential at 1400-4300 rpm.
  • Versions Cooper S relies on a gasoline 2.0-liter "turbo four" with an aluminum block, a twin-scroll turbocharger, direct power supply, a pair of balancer shafts and a throttle-free mixture formation system, the return of which reaches 192 "stallions" at 5000-6000 rpm and 280 Nm of thrust at 1350-4600 rpm.
  • Diesel modifications Cooper D and Cooper SD"Armed" with a four-cylinder 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, 16-valve timing and Common Rail fuel injection. In the first case, it produces 150 "mares" at 4000 rpm and 330 Nm of torque at 1750-2500 rpm, and in the second - 190 forces and 400 Nm at identical rpm.
  • Hybrid option Cooper S E has in its arsenal the aforementioned petrol "troika" with a volume of 1.5 liters and an 88-horsepower synchronous electric motor (165 Nm), which together generate 224 "horses" and 385 Nm of available traction.

The “second” Mini Countryman accelerates to a maximum speed of 197-225 km / h, “firing” from standstill to 100 km / h after 7.2-9.8 seconds.

Gasoline versions in the combined mode "digest" 5.7-7.1 liters of fuel per "hundred", diesel - 4.5-5.1 liters.

A combined cycle petrol car consumes only 2.1 liters, and on pure electricity it can travel up to 40 km at a speed of up to 125 km / h (it takes 3 hours and 15 minutes to recharge batteries from a household power supply).

"Countryman" of the second generation uses the UKL platform with an independent MacPherson-type system in front and a multi-link configuration at the rear ("in a circle" there are transverse stabilizers). Electronically controlled Dynamic Damper Control shock absorbers with three operating modes (Mid, Sport, Green) are available for a surcharge. High-strength steels and aluminum are widely used in the body of the SUV.

"Briton" is standardly equipped with rack and pinion steering with an active electric amplifier, as well as brake "pancakes" on all wheels (with ventilation in the front) with ABS, BA, EBD and other "gadgets".

Options and prices. In the Russian market, MINI Countryman of the second generation in 2018 is offered at a price of 1,690,000 rubles - this is how much they ask for a basic version of a SUV with a 136-horsepower engine and a front-wheel drive transmission.

As a standard, the car “flaunts”: six airbags, dynamic “cruise”, air conditioning, ABS, ESP, 16-inch alloy wheels, ERA-GLONASS technology, four power windows, heated front seats, an infotainment complex, a rear view camera, rear sensors parking and other equipment.

The four-wheel drive version of the Cooper ALL4 costs from 1,990,000 rubles, the Cooper D ALL4 with a diesel engine is sold for at least 2,100,000 rubles, and for the "heated" Cooper S ALL4 and Cooper SD ALL4 you will have to pay from 2,190,000 and 2,290,000 rubles, respectively.

"Top" equipment includes (in addition to the above options): dual-zone climate control, 17-inch "rollers", parking assistance and some other "bells and whistles".

MINIs are different: coupe, crossover, and station wagon. Now some Paceman has appeared. What kind of car is this? How far has it gone from the very first, original MINI created by Sir Issigonis himself?

After two flights to Spain, to Mallorca, and just a hard day, before going to bed, not the sheep, which are usually counted, swam before my eyes, but the MINI options: classic, Cabrio, Coupe, Roadster, Countryman, Clubman, Clubvan was also remembered for the company. Now there is another Paceman. As many as eight modifications. After that, dreamed of mini-pickups and even mini-sedans.

In the morning I had a meeting with the MINI Paceman. It came to mind that it was rather Countrywoman, that is, the same Countryman, but three-door and more elegant.

The interior can be distinguished from the Countryman's cabin only by the power window buttons transferred to the doors from the center console, the rest is “one to one”.

To me, Countryman's "muzzle" is more like a fish, it is extremely difficult to fall in love with him in such circumstances. But Olya, a journalist and my companion, is delighted:

I recently bought myself a Countryman, why hurry! The Paceman is just a dream. I really like the usual MINI, but the ground clearance is too small, so the Countryman took it. I had to wait a bit.

The Paceman has a sloping roof, wider doors, and in general it really looks more feminine, dynamic and more compact than the Countryman. In fact, the three-door MINI is 4109 long, it is longer than the Countryman, albeit by only 12 mm, but it is 43 mm smaller than its brother (1518 mm high).

With regard to clearance - sheer optical illusion. The largest clearance is the Paceman turbo diesel, the MINI Cooper SD model with a 2.0-liter 143-horsepower engine that transmits 305 Nm. The petrol Cooper has a ground clearance of 135mm, and the sporty Cooper S Paceman with a sporty lowered suspension is 124mm. For comparison: MINI One (hatchback) ground clearance - 139 mm, Countryman - 149 mm.

There are endless combinations of colors, textures and trim materials. Even for backlighting, there are six color options to choose from. The corners of the panels are comfortably rounded.

Less Paceman and interior space. The ceiling above the driver and front passenger is 20 mm lower, above the rear passengers - 12 mm. Not to say that it would be cramped in the back, but the problem is how to get into the back seat. This maneuver requires acrobatic training.

The trunk also decreased, by 20 liters, to 330, and if you fold the backs of the rear seats, then by 90 liters. The Countryman will fit 1170 liters, and the Paceman - 1080.

Well, the Paceman is probably lighter than the Countryman! Yes. 5 kg. This is when you compare the turbo version. According to technical data, a three-door is faster than a four-door by 0.1 s in acceleration to hundreds: 7.5 seconds on mechanics and 7.8 seconds on a six-speed automatic.

I got a Cooper S with a manual transmission for a test drive.

The chair is comfortable and holds well. But the adjustment of its height is not convenient, the handle is still located at the back of the center box.

If you manage to get into the back seat, then sitting on it is comfortable. Instead of a central armrest, there is a console on which mounts for tablets and phones or cup holders are installed. The high line of the window gives a sense of security.

Best of all, the Paceman accelerates in sport mode. In it, the engine transmits 260 Nm at 1700 - 4500 rpm, 20 more than in standard mode. Accelerates confidently, without bursts and jerks. The uniform hum of the turbo engine is disturbed only when you release the accelerator in sport mode - you can hear pops in the muffler. The steering is sharp, the same as in the Countryman JCW, only 2.3 turns of the steering wheel all the way to one side and the other. In standard mode, the steering wheel is too light, in sport mode it is not informative enough. The Paceman makes turns with confidence, the roll is less than the Countryman, but still passing is not a reference.

When asked about body stiffness and lap times on the Nordschleife, MINI brand manager, formerly the director of the M division, Kai Segler, answers approximately the following: “These numbers are not interesting to our customers, understand, we do not just build cars, they are a kind of communicators, they bring people together. MINI drivers smile at each other when they go to work. We are like a family, we arrange joint trips ”.

The Paceman looks more dynamic than the Countryman, this is most likely due to its lower height. But in fact, their drag coefficient is the same, 0.36.

I very soon felt how this MINI unites people. I drove off the asphalt and "sat down". I just started digging - an unexpected salvation came. Three middle-aged friends, a Frenchman, a German and a Swiss, helped Olya and me to pull the car out. Yeah. MINI brings you closer, don't hesitate. However, I personally prefer to meet in a more relaxed atmosphere.

As already mentioned, we got the Paceman Cooper S with a fairly stiff sports suspension, fitted with optional 18-inch wheels. Shakes in him completely mercilessly. But you can overcome such holes in which a car with a soft suspension will strike with a bumper. Of course, to overcome obstacles, the trajectory must be built correctly. Nevertheless, I would recommend to buyers in Russia not to take a sports package, and even with large wheels.

The trunk is not only smaller than that of the Countryman (330-1080 versus 350-1170 liters), it is, unfortunately, also less convenient. Lanterns placed horizontally look very attractive, but the luggage opening narrows quite significantly.

You can already place an order with Russian dealers, deliveries began in March. Please note that you will have to pay extra for the fact that there are no rear doors. The Paceman is 55,000 - 70,000 rubles more expensive than the Countryman. The basic configuration of the front-wheel drive Mini Cooper Paceman with an atmospheric 1.6-liter 122-horsepower engine and an ordinary air conditioner costs 995,000 rubles, this version with a manual transmission is unlikely to be popular with us, the sales of Countryman with such a filling are 2%. For a car with an automatic transmission you will have to pay 1,070,000 rubles. Mini Cooper S Paceman with all-wheel drive, turbocharged 1.6-liter 184-horsepower engine and mechanics will cost 1,350,000 rubles, add 75,000 rubles and you can take it with an automatic transmission.

On a front-wheel drive Paceman, it's best to stay out of the sand, especially on the sports version. At low revs, there is not enough traction and you have to burn the clutch, helplessly fidgeting in the sand. Don't spare the extra € 1900 and go with the ALL4, all-wheel drive. And off-road tires for 500 euros are also not in the way. We didn't have such luxury, but we found friends on the Land Rover Defender, MINI really united us, especially when the cable was found.

I sit in the Mini John Cooper Works GP and have the free Circuito Mallorca RennArena at my disposal, a 3.2 km track. In the cabin, instead of the rear seats, there is a semi-safety cage, from the speaker you can hear: "ready?"

A turbocharged engine forced up to 218 horses, accelerating this MINI to a hundred in 6.3 seconds - this is exactly what the documentation says. The standard 211-horsepower MINI JCW is 0.2 seconds slower, although both versions weigh the same at 1160 kg each. The GP on which I have to drive around the track is the fastest MINI: its drag was reduced by 6% (from 0.36 to 0.35), the maximum speed increased to 242 km / h. This MINI is faster than the Challenge by 2 km / h and the regular JCW by 4 km / h. In addition, the effect of lifting forces was reduced by 90% by installing an aerodynamic body kit: a wing and a diffuser.

Externally, the half-race GP stands out thanks to the developed diffuser.

On the track, the car is a real pleasure. The steering wheel is ideally informative and optimal in weight, the driver will instantly recognize a slip or slip. Potential locking is electronically imitated, it brakes the inner wheel and transfers more torque to the outer one, which has better grip. The traction control system is not so rigidly configured, it does not "choke" the engine at the exit from the corner.

There is no rear sofa and trunk shelf. Instead, there is a pipe.

A common language with the car was found already in the first round. On the second I went already with an understanding of where to turn, where to slow down and began to attack the track. Holds on the GP track is simply phenomenal: sports suspension and sports tires (Kumho Ecsta V700 215/40 R17) do their job. MINI JCW has a ground clearance of 13 cm and is designed for normal roads. The MINI GP has an average of 9.1 cm, it varies within 2 cm, this allows it to be adjusted for different tracks. By default, the toe-in of the rear and front wheels is reduced in it, the camber is increased. Thanks to this, the speed in turns increased, and the turning radius also increased: it was 10.7 meters, and now it is 12 meters.

Another cross member of the reinforcement is hidden under the hood together with the "overclocked" to 218 hp. 1.6-liter turbo engine. A large turbocharger with a new radiator, a different block head and larger intake valve poppets, a completely replaced exhaust system.

The most powerful six-piston brakes did not lose their effectiveness during four laps. The front discs in the GP are ventilated, with a diameter of 330 mm, for comparison, the JCW has 316 mm.

Of course, no one expects the properties of an SUV from the Mini Cooper Countryman. Even the most "vigorous and charged" Countryman with all-wheel drive and reinforced suspension remains a car for driving on smooth (preferably) city roads. In bad weather conditions (wet snow) it is prone to drifts, so you need to be especially careful when changing lanes. The steering wheel requires concentration from the driver: even when driving straight ahead, micro-steering is indispensable. The ride is smoother than that of the smaller brothers "Mini", but the McPherson suspension does not save you from a painful reaction even to minor irregularities.

The side mirrors are too small for a full view, which is quite a hindrance when changing lanes. Good visibility is also hindered by the roof that floats forward. The disadvantages include the lack of a full-fledged "spare wheel" - the manufacturer supplies "Countryman" only with a proprietary repair kit. With the sensitivity of the wheelbase to road imperfections and, given the quality of Russian roads, this fact is somewhat annoying.

At the promised maximum speed (190 km / h), roaring sounds break through into the cabin. Someone will consider them sports. They are intimidating to most!
