The procedure itself is simple - just unscrew the filler plug with a 12 hexagon, after thoroughly cleaning it seat from dirt, and with a suitable object (a wooden stick or a piece of wire) measure how much lower the liquid level is at the bottom edge of the hole. If this distance exceeds 10 mm, top up should be carried out using a special syringe. You need to top up until the grease begins to flow out of the hole, then wipe the box dry and tighten the plug.
Choosing the right oil
The choice of lubricant for the transfer case and Niva axles should be taken responsibly, because the reliable functioning of these transmission elements ensures that you will never find yourself in a situation requiring outside help. The recommended ones have characteristics that ensure the optimal operation of the vehicle unit for which they are intended. If you know exactly what kind of oil is poured into the dispenser, the choice is simplified: it is enough to purchase a lubricant with the same viscosity. If this information is not available, it does not matter either: you just need to merge all the old transmission fluid, that is, do not limit yourself to topping up, if, say, the level is too low, and the lubricant itself is not yet very contaminated.
It should be noted that if you do not know which oil to pour into the Niva distributor, which one into the box, which one into the bridges, then the manufacturer claims that you can use the same transmission fluid in all these units. If we talk about, then oils 78W90, 80W85, 80W90 are acceptable, the main condition is. The manufacturer is not so important if it is a well-known foreign or domestic brand.
The automaker pours mineral water into the dispenser, but when replacing the fluid, it is more preferable lubricant there will be semisynthetics with the best performance characteristics more suitable for the climate of our country.
How much to pour
According to the data given in the operating manual, the volume of oil poured into the distributor of the Niva-2121 and more modern modifications (21213, 21214, 21310) is 0.75 liters. Some reference books give a figure of 0.79 liters, which is not important - you still need to purchase liquid packaged in a container with a volume of 1 liter.
The procedure for self-changing oil in the Niva distributor
If, as a result of the next level check or in the dispenser, it turned out that it was time to replace it (symptoms indicating the need to perform such a procedure may be not only a very dark color of the oil with the inclusion of solid particles, but also the appearance of noise when the dispenser is turned on or during it work), you can perform such a replacement on your own.
To do this, you need a 19 and 12 hex wrench, a liter container for used grease and some rags. It will also be necessary to provide access to the car from the bottom side, for which you can use both a lift and an overpass or a viewing hole.

According to the manufacturer, the oil in the transfer case and axle cannot be changed and is filled for the entire service life of the vehicle.
But underfilling the oil in the distributor and the axle is a fairly common occurrence on Renault Duster.
V this case it lacked only 2 cm to the level, it is not scary, but to calm down I had to change it.
Since it is not clear what kind of oil was filled, I had to play it safe and buy a new gear oil Total Syn Fe 75W-90, Renault recommended oil, solidifies at temperatures below 50 degrees.
To change the oil in the razdatka and the Renault Duster bridge, there will be enough 1 liter.
In this report, it took 1 liter and 50-100 grams, this is when filling to the maximum, to the level drain holes and taking into account the complete draining and flushing of the rear gearbox and hand-outs.
- We start with the rear gearbox
- You don't have to lift the car, if you lie on the ground, then there is enough space.

The oil will not drain, so you can use the vacuum hose to drain the oil completely.
The hose is just vacuum, because the walls are not compressed. We insert one end of the hose into the filler hole of the gearbox, resting the hose against the bottom, the other end of the hose to vacuum pump(or we create a vacuum with our lungs), the hose is taken long so that the oil does not get into the pump or swallow it.
You can also flush the gearbox and drain completely flushing fluid in this manner. The oil drains out of the distributor well, you do not need to rinse it.

We push the hose and pour new oil into the filler hole (top), the oil must be poured to the very edge of the hole.

Moving on to the transfer case
We remove the right front wheel(passenger side), you can simply turn it out if it is convenient.
The transfer box is located on the passenger side, right behind the wheel. See the photo below.
We find the filler hole, it is also the control one.
Transfer case oil level is normal.
To access the drain plug, you will have to partially remove the protection by unscrewing the six mounting bolts so that the protection hangs only on the front ones. The drain plug of the transfer case is indicated by an arrow.
The oil drains out of the distributor well, you do not need to rinse it.
We drain the oil, tighten the drain plug. Putting the protection together in the reverse order.
Oil was poured everywhere exactly along the edge of the filler hole (it even poured out a little).
The control and filler hole of the box is located in the same way as the dispensing hole, but on the left side.
In the box, the oil did not change, only the level was checked - almost flush with the edge.
