Honda CR-V crossover

Until the mid-90s of the last century, there were no such concepts as "crossover" or "SUV", passenger cars had only a class of SUVs - the cars had all-wheel drive, frame structure and a high body. The first crossovers in the world were Toyota Rav4 and Honda CRV - Toyota appeared in 1994, and a year later, Honda made its debut. The CR-V model is produced to this day, four generations have changed during its existence.

Honda CRV RD1

Although the C-Er-Wee is not an SUV as such, it has very good cross-country ability, especially in the all-wheel drive version. The first Honda CRV cars began to be produced in Japan, in the city of Sayama, as well as in England (the city of Swindon), this model was created on the basis of the Honda Civic passenger car. For the Japanese market there were right-hand drive crossovers, and for the North American market the first car was presented in 1996 at the Chicago Auto Show, in February 1997 the crossovers went on sale.

At first, "Honda" was produced only in one configuration (LX), the car was equipped with a two-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 126 liters. with. (model B20B), which outwardly almost did not differ from the internal combustion engine of the Honda Integra 1.8 l, but had an increased cylinder diameter (84 mm). The first generation Honda SRV was produced in three bodies:

  • RD1 - all-wheel drive;
  • RD2 - cars with front wheel drive;
  • RD3 is a restyled version.

In 1999, the Honda CR-V underwent a slight restyling, and although outwardly it did not change at all, it was equipped with a more powerful B20Z engine (147 hp). In the new power unit, the ICE manifolds have been modified, the compression ratio in the cylinders has been increased.

Later, the EX equipment appeared, in which 15-radius alloy wheels were provided, and the ABS system was also installed. In the configuration of any Honda CRV-1 there was a picnic table, the rear seats folded into the "floor", which at that time was a rarity. For many countries, the car was supplied with a chrome grille, but in the American version this part was made of black plastic, the bumpers had the same color.

Honda CRV RD1 is a car with good handling, with front and rear multi-link suspensions. Basically, all cars of the first generation were equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission (there are not so many cars with a 5-speed "mechanics"), and even with a weak 126-horsepower engine had good dynamics. The first generation CRV was produced until 2001, then it was replaced by the Honda SRV-2.

Cars with SUV qualities had automatic rear-wheel drive (AWD), which was later used in many modern crossovers.

Honda SRV 2nd generation

The CRV-2 crossover was produced by the Honda automobile company from 2002 to 2006, the car was presented in bodies, starting with RD-4 and ending with RD-8:

  • RD4 - dorestyling, with 4x2 wheel arrangement;
  • RD5 - pre-styling, with 4x4 wheel drive;
  • RD6 - restyling, front-wheel drive version;
  • RD7 - restyling, with four-wheel drive;
  • RD8 - a car for the European market, with a 2.0 liter engine.

In the second generation, the car's seating position is lower and the body height is increased. Due to this, the interior became more spacious, although outwardly the car did not look larger in size. On the Honda CR-V 2, the line of power units has expanded - a K24A1 power unit with a volume of 2.4 liters and a capacity of 160 liters has appeared. with. The transmission was also changed, and it is already presented in four versions on cars of this generation:

  • 5 and 6 speed manual transmission;
  • 4- and 5-speed automatic transmission ("five-step" was mainly installed on cars for the American market).

Honda SRV (2nd generation) is based on the Honda Civic-7 passenger car (2001-2005), and the crossover turned out to be so successful that it was recognized as the best in the world according to the magazine "Car and Driver". In 2005, the car underwent restyling, the changes affected:

  • front and rear optics;
  • radiator grilles;
  • rear and front bumper;
  • front fog lights.

On the updated model, rims of the 16th radius were already installed instead of the R15 in the pre-styling version, the radio control buttons were now located on the steering wheel.

The front seats in the SRV-2 cabin are wide and comfortable, with many adjustments, the instruments on the panel are well readable and have good information content. The quality of the interior is not bad, but the plastic is somewhat harsh. It should be noted that the C-Er-Vi dashboard of the first issue is trimmed with leatherette, and therefore looks more noble. The CRV-2 is equipped with two airbags, the basic equipment is equipped with air conditioning, heated front seats and mirrors.

After 2005, crossovers supplied to the USA, in the basic configuration, began to be equipped with:

  • ABS and ESP systems;
  • stabilization system;
  • side airbags.

Also in 2005, a 2.2 liter turbo diesel with a capacity of 140 hp appeared in the line of Honda CR-V engines. with., the power unit was intended for cars of the European market. It should be noted that the SRV-2 version was available for Russia only with a two-liter gasoline internal combustion engine.

Third generation "C-R-Vi"

The debut of the third generation of the Honda crossover took place in September 2006, and it went into production in 2007. This car was somewhat shorter in length and lower in height, the body of the CRV-3 became more streamlined, and the spare wheel from the outside of the rear door “moved” to the trunk. The line of power units has remained almost the same, but the motors have been somewhat modernized. The engines installed on the Honda SRV-3 are models:

  • R20A - 1997 cm³ (gasoline);
  • K24Z - 2354 cm³ (gasoline);
  • N22A - 2204 cm³ (turbodiesel).

In 2007, the Honda CR-V became so popular in America that it entered the top ten best-selling cars, and in 2008 it became the leader in sales and popularity. In 2010, the car was restyled, and in 2011 the production of the model was discontinued, the "baton" was taken over by the fourth generation crossover.

Honda CRV 2008

The 2008 Honda CR-V is a compact SUV (crossover) of the third generation in a pre-styling version. The main competitors of SRV-3 are Toyota Rav4 and Subaru Forester, and although Honda is slightly inferior to Subaru in terms of comfort, it looks more solid, and most importantly, you can buy a car at a very attractive price.

The design of the Honda CR-V 3 can hardly be called "feminine" - the car looks quite aggressive, with some claim to "sportiness". The interior of the car is quite spacious - it comfortably accommodates both the driver himself and passengers in the front and rear seats. The backrests of the rear seats are adjustable, in addition, they move back and forth, and passengers can take a comfortable position during a long journey. There is also an armrest at the back of the cabin, and it has two cup holders.

The boot lid opens completely from the bottom up, and not to the side, as it was on the previous CR-V models. The luggage compartment has a shelf that folds easily, and there is also a curtain. In the left side of the luggage compartment there is a socket for connecting various consumers; under the floor there is a small stowaway (an incomplete spare wheel).

The 2008 Honda CR-V car is equipped with two types of gasoline engines - 2.0 and 2.4 liters, for European countries the car is also supplied with a 2.2 liter diesel engine. Turbodiesel compares favorably with gasoline internal combustion engines with low fuel consumption and high-torque power, but in Russia it “takes root” with difficulty - diesel does not “tolerate” low-quality domestic diesel fuel. It is preferable for Russian conditions to buy a Honda SRV car with a 2.4 l power unit - the internal combustion engine and gasoline consume moderately, and has excellent dynamics.

The K24Z engine is a 4-cylinder in-line engine with a capacity of 166 hp. with., has a timing chain drive. The motor is very reliable and practically does not break, but this does not mean that it can not be serviced. In the pre-styling version of 2008, two types of transmission are provided - a 6-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed manual transmission. Automatic transmission, gearboxes also raises no objections. Rear-wheel drive on all-wheel drive vehicles on the off-road is connected automatically, and, moreover, without any jerks and delays.

Fourth generation Honda CRV

The debut of the 4th generation SRV took place in 2011 at the AutoShow exhibition in Los Angeles; the car has been serially produced since 2012. A 1.6-liter power unit developed for Europe was added to the lineup of SRV-4 engines, the crossover was originally produced with two types of transmission:

  • five-speed "automatic";
  • nine-speed automatic transmission (European version).

In 2014, a restyled version of the CR-V 4 was presented to the world - a six-speed Japanese-made variator, an internal combustion engine with a direct fuel injection system, was added to this car. On the restyled model, the suspension was modernized, and in the American version, the electronic equipment was expanded. The new 2017 Honda CR-V can easily be mistaken for a restyled version of the fourth-generation crossover, sample of 2013.

Interior

Salon Honda CR-V 5th generation is still five-seater with a very comfortable fit. Rear passengers feel comfortable in any position of the driver's seat. The center console is ergonomically designed. Therefore, all the main controls are available to the driver without any difficulty.

The front panel is equipped, as we have already said, a Connect multimedia center with a seven-inch touchscreen display. Surely many will like the updated cruise control system, which is called the "Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control System".

It not only maintains the set speed and distance to the vehicle in front, but is also able to track the actions of other drivers. For example, if someone decides to overtake and integrates between you and another car, the system will automatically change the speed and type of movement.

Experts note that the noise has been reduced by more than two times. Engineers from Japan have done a tremendous job of soundproofing the cabin, which, combined with a reduced level of aerodynamic drag, made it possible to achieve these soundproofing figures.

The trunk of the Honda CR-V has become more comfortable, this was achieved by reducing the loading height by 30 mm and increasing the loading area to 1570 mm. The standard trunk volume can be increased from 569 liters to 1669 liters by folding the rear seats. By the way, the rear seats are equipped with an electric drive.
The entire interior of the brand new Japanese car Honda CR-V can be called carefully thought out. I was pleasantly able to please the presence of a volume control, which comes as an addition to the 7-inch display of the audio system.

All the controls, as well as the keys that the chauffeur needs every day, were beautifully labeled and easy to reach. The only exceptions are the dual sensors located on the side of the digital instrument cluster on EX and higher trim levels.

If we talk about the sensors for the fuel level and temperature of the coolant, then they decided to make them in the form of modest highlighted scales, instead of standard solutions, which makes it a little difficult to read this necessary information.

In the event that you have the impression that this review is very nagging at small elements, then yes, it is. This can be easily explained, because the Honda automobile company took great responsibility for the equipment of the 2017 model, which you notice while driving.

A large number of parts were made of high quality aluminum. The driver's seat is fairly decently equipped, and the seats themselves have pronounced lateral support, moderately hard and dense. The correct orthopedic fit is felt. At the back, there is room for three passengers.

Repair and tuning Honda SRV

There are few weak points in the Honda CR-V car, but still, various breakdowns periodically occur. On cars of the first generation, automatic transmissions may fail, rear springs often sag, a radiator leaks (a crack may form next to the drain plug). On the Honda CR-V 1, there are problems with the stove and air conditioning, these breakdowns are most typical for cars produced in 1997-2001.

On the Honda SRV 3, there is one characteristic nuisance - when you open the tailgate, the water accumulated on it flows directly onto the person, and it is difficult to do anything about it. Even in cold weather, the door may not open completely - the shock absorbers of the boot lid freeze. On any SRV, fuses periodically blow out, the sound insulation is not very good, and many car owners tune the car - they install additional "noise" of the doors and floor in the cabin.

Ball joints can fail, but the fault here is usually the anthers, which often break on non-original parts. Motorists advise, when replacing the ball joint, to remove the old boot from the old part (if it is intact) or to purchase original spare parts.

Although the Honda CRV has a fairly good cross-country ability, it is not an SUV as such. To improve off-road qualities, the car is often tuned, a suspension lift is made. On the crossover, the ground clearance is increased using spacers or special reinforced springs of increased length, there are special lift kits - they are produced by various manufacturers. The installation of reinforced springs on cars of the fourth generation "C-Er-Vi" is especially relevant - the vehicle's ground clearance is only 170 mm.

Summing up everything written, we can say that the new Honda crossover car is not bad. However, this car is not for everyone, especially when there are cheaper options. Of course, if you want to overpay for Honda's unique technologies, then this crossover is for you. In general, all Honda cars stand apart, they have their own constant fans. In our country, this brand cannot be called mass.

Honda CR-V is considered to be a fairly reliable car, especially if it very rarely goes off-road. Its design uses many components from other well-known models of the brand, such as the Honda Civic and Honda Accord, which guarantees high technical stability. Those planning to drive an SUV frequently on or off difficult road sections will be disappointed. The rear axle is connected by a hydraulic pump, which comes into operation with a long delay and transfers only a small part of the torque. Rarely is the rear axle capable of providing real off-road assistance. Another disadvantage is reliability. The clutch and pump can easily overheat, and with frequent use, they will soon fail.

Nevertheless, in general, the all-wheel drive system of the 1st generation Honda SRV is quite stable. However, problems after many years of operation are almost inevitable. Most often there is a backlash on the propeller shaft, in the front axle shafts, oil leaks from the rear axle are possible. The "bridge" can hum if no one has ever changed the oil in it before.

Loads relatively quickly disable the mechanical transmission. Begins to knock out gears or a rattle appears. Rough exploitation ultimately ends in wear of bearings and synchronizers. Against this background, versions with a gun look better. Although automatic transmissions are quite outdated and slow, but subject to regular oil changes, manual transmissions are much more durable. It is noteworthy that the gear selector in the Honda CR-V with automatic transmission is located on the steering column, as in American cars.

The geometric cross-country ability of the Honda SR-B allows a lot, but the main thing is not to overdo it. The suspension is durable, does not like bumps. It feels best when used on roads with a flat paved surface. Original components are the most durable, but they are quite expensive, so owners are increasingly using cheap counterparts that wear out rather quickly. Hence, there is an opinion about the crossover suspension, as not the best element. Fortunately, small parts, such as silent blocks and connectors, usually need to be replaced.

Chassis problems are often caused by overload, which is facilitated by a roomy body. After several years of such operation, the condition of the rear suspension begins to deteriorate. Replacement of springs and shock absorbers will be required.

The vibrations that give off to the steering wheel are a typical nuisance that many Honda owners of that time faced, and not only the CR-V. The disease arose for many reasons, the detection of which, confirmation and elimination is not only difficult, but also expensive.

The first generation Honda CR-V petrol engines have earned a good reputation, especially the B20 series. They are very reliable and hardy. The longevity of the motor depends entirely on the condition of the cooling system and valve clearance. Fan failure or radiator defects quickly affect the condition of the motor. Cheap thermostat analogs are short-lived. Unfortunately, many people forget about valve clearance adjustment. In advanced cases, it may be necessary to repair the head of the block. Ancillary equipment and electronics failures are rare.

Most Honda SR-Bs are well equipped, but electrical equipment often fails. These are mostly frivolous glitches. Power windows are most often affected, and even then mainly due to the mechanical part.

The interior is assembled from good quality materials and looks good even on vehicles with over 300,000 km of mileage. The self-supporting body of the CR-V is rigid and well protected from corrosion. Corrosion appears in places hidden from view. Therefore, before buying, you must carefully check the condition of the supporting elements of the suspension, look under the seals and inspect the lower edges of the doors. Due to the spare wheel mounted on the tailgate, it has to be adjusted periodically.

Operating costs

Although the Honda CR-V can be purchased for relatively little money, operating costs are estimated to be above average in the class. Due to their age, many cars are already worn out. Unfortunately, even with a small petrol engine, the average fuel consumption will be at least 10 l / 100 km. From the point of view of the ratio of power to fuel consumption, the restyled modification with a 147 hp engine is much more profitable, versus the 128-horsepower version. 2-liter engines are practically the same structurally. The changes only affected the intake and exhaust system. The most gluttonous modification is with a gun, but it is more comfortable to operate.

The biggest advantage of the Honda SR-B is the availability of spare parts. The market is very rich and there is no shortage of specialized stores and services. Original spare parts are expensive. Analogs are cheaper, but it is better to purchase better quality substitutes.

Conclusion

When looking for a Honda CR-V, it is better to get a younger one with a more powerful engine. Car prices are more dependent on condition than age. If possible, it is necessary to check whether the crossover was involved in serious accidents - restoration of the geometry is very problematic. It is better to avoid specimens that often go off-road. Indirectly, this will be indicated by numerous deformations, dirt and abrasions on the bottom, sills and elements of the exhaust system. It is imperative to check the condition of the rear axle and differential coupling. A hum in the rear axle area while driving indicates a problem with the differential or multi-plate clutch. During the test drive, you should accelerate to at least 120 km / h in order to make sure that there are no vibrations. If they are, then you must understand that their elimination will be difficult or even impossible. Recall that in the case of the first generation CR-V, vibrations are not always caused by unbalanced wheels or unevenly worn tires. Be careful.

The all-terrain station wagon was the original idea of the engineers for the Honda CR-V model. Due to unknown circumstances, the design has undergone changes and in 1995 Honda SRV RD 1 made its debut in the "crossover" class. At that time, the brand made a splash. No one could offer such a potential customer before: spaciousness of the cabin, high ground clearance, a combination of power with fuel consumption and availability in service. The closest rival was Toyota RAV-4. But it was also significantly inferior in a number of indicators, about which a little below.

Specifications

Construction, platform / frame

Honda SRV 1996 is partially built on a platform from the Honda Integra. Percentage: 25% to 75%. The engineers originally planned to develop a completely new base for the crossover. The catastrophic lack of time, the market dictating its conditions, left their mark.

Engine

The success of the Honda CR V RD 1 was largely dependent on the powertrain. The first and only, until 1999, a 2.0-liter engine in a classic in-line design: four cylinders, a drive belt, two camshafts and 130HP under the hood. Catalog index B20B.

During the operation, there were no complaints. Surprisingly high-quality and well-coordinated motor the first time. But not without error - a defect in the crankshaft pulley mounting bolt. After the first replacement of the timing belt, it broke when tightened. There is a version that the reason is exceeding the maximum effort. Whether this is so is not known for certain.

Externally, the power unit is similar to the engine from the Honda Integra V - 1.8 liters, with an increased cylinder diameter. At 5400 rpm, the torque is 180 Nm. In general, not bad for a "off-road wagon".

Checkpoint

Gearbox Honda CR V 1996 is presented in the classic version: five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. In general, there are no complaints about the work, only the annual service is not cheap, from 25,000 rubles. And given the age of the model, even more costs.

But here, too, the problem was solved by installing contract transmissions. It cost 10,000 rubles less. Cheap and cheerful.

Suspension

Suspension type: independent double wishbone at the front and "MacPherson" at the rear. This made it possible to literally absorb small and medium bumps on the road without recoil, vibrations, knocking on the steering wheel, or the car interior.

Carrying body with reinforced wishbones. The brake system is disc type at the front, drum at the rear. Clearance 20.5 cm.

Exterior

Honda SRV of the first generation is characterized by stylistic solutions in the form of overlays on the fenders, the manufacture of front and rear bumpers from polymer materials. For Europe and the CIS, the model was supplied with a front chrome grille, and for the US market, it was exclusively made of black plastic, matching the color of the bumper.

Dimensions: 4510 x 1780 x 1770 mm. Wheelbase: 2620mm, and the restyled version is five centimeters longer.

Interior

Spaciousness and affordability - these are the properties for which the consumer from Japan and the USA fell in love with the model. The horizontal cushion of the driver's seat, the automatic transmission petals attached to the steering wheel, the perfectly folding rear row of seats, everything is well thought out, that there are no complaints at all.

But the main highlight is hidden in the luggage compartment floor - a portable picnic table. Looking ahead, this "zest" was preserved up to the fifth model.

Restyling

In 1999, the Honda CRV concern presented a novelty - a modernized version of the stock SRV 1 motor. This did not happen on the initiative of engineers, but under pressure from the owners of the model. The reason is that a standard power unit for a car weight of one and a half tons is not enough for active operation. New designation 2.0 L B20Z 150HP L4.

The modification received an increased compression ratio, the amount of lift of the exhaust valves, a new shape of the exhaust manifold. This contributed to an increase in the efficiency of the car: consumption was reduced by 17%. Urban 10 l / 100 km, mixed 8.4 l.

Available configurations and prices

The Japanese auto industry has one common feature - the gradation of product markets. These are the following geographic regions:

  • "Svoya Strana" - a Honda CRV 1996 engine with a power rating of 147 hp;
  • Europe and the CIS - 130 hp;
  • USA - 128 HP

The restyled version differs from the first generation by the presence of a safe braking system ABS, pre-installed 15-inch discs. Drive type: permanent front or optional full (Real-Time AWD).

In the secondary market, for a model with preinstalled mechanics, they will ask for 380,000 rubles, and for an automatic machine, they are 25,000 rubles cheaper.

Main competitors

There is only one rival in the "weight" category, and he comes from Japan - Toyota RAV-4. At that time, there were no models in Europe that could withstand the Honda CR V.

Features of the model that distinguish it from competitors

Since the closest competitor was the Toyota RAV-4, there is nothing to compare, since the advantage of the Honda SRV is obvious: a high-quality engine, moderate fuel consumption, a modernized double-wishbone suspension at the front, in contrast to the classic "MacPherson" at Toyota.

Cons, problems

  • during technical inspections, repairs, be extremely careful and careful. Standard ABS sensors are fragile, with a slight mechanical impact, they crack at the base;
  • CR V RD1 models manufactured between 1997 and 1999 are known for premature wear of the universal joint shaft, which is carefully pressed into the metal shaft body. At that time, not all service centers had equipment for high-quality pressing of crosses. It got to the point that the owners dismantled the rear propeller shaft and successfully drove on the front.

Pros, dignity

  1. Moderate fuel economy;
  2. Compact dimensions, like for a crossover car;
  3. Maintaining the leading positions of the top three since 1995;
  4. Modernization of the car as a whole and its individual mechanisms.

Output

It's a shame that the 1997 Honda CR V was discontinued in 2001. But, despite this, the "fight" for it is still going on in the secondary market. It takes a lot of time to get the first generation CR V, but it's worth it.

Video: # The most honest review of the owner. 1999 Honda CR-V RD1

Honda SRV 1st generation was released in 1995, for the Japanese, European and American markets, it was the first Honda crossover developed in-house. With its appearance, the CR-V revolutionized the urban crossover class.

In the article you will find out details about the first generation Honda SRV, development history, technical characteristics, recommendations for buying, maintenance tips, technical regulations. services from the Japanese division of Honda (Honda Japan), tuning, photo and video test drive.

In the first half of the 90s, the Honda Research Institute decided to develop a universal car for the city and rough terrain, this project was the 1st generation Honda SRV.

Honda SRV 1st generation

The engineers were faced with the task of making a universal car in every sense of the word, it should be suitable for the city, be well equipped, economical, comfortable, and at the same time easily drive over rough terrain. The designers did an excellent job.

Honda SRV is not the first urban SUV, the pioneer was the Toyota RAV 4 and it is rumored that engineers from Honda took into account the shortcomings of Toyota. Someone says that the CR-V was developed earlier, but in any case, the SUV from Honda revolutionized and became the reference model in the class for many years to come.

First of all, SRV has become a bestseller due to its versatility, it is great to drive in the city, and it is priceless to park without noticing barriers due to its high ground clearance.

The appearance of the 1st generation Honda SRV resembles a beautiful station wagon, but there are a lot of details from the SUV. A spare wheel bolted to the tailgate, plastic linings on the convex parts of the side doors, which will protect against branches and scratches, are striking.

The exterior of the Honda CR-V 1 turned out to be pleasant, the car still looks relevant. But because of what they fell in love with the "SUV" from Honda, it is for the interior, more precisely, for its functionality and convenience.

The 2nd row of seats folds to the inside and outside, the second option is perfect for an overnight stay. There is no partition between the first and second row and you can move freely between the rows.

The abundance of glove compartments is striking, they are everywhere, even in the back door, between the driver and the passenger there is a folding table, under the front passenger seat a pull-out drawer. The trunk does not lag behind the passenger compartment; there is a folding table in it.

The table is included with the car

Technical part

The engine on the 1st generation Honda SRV was installed with an uncontested B20B, this is a reliable unit with a capacity of 130 horsepower and 192 Hm of torque. The B20B is structurally similar to the legendary B16b engine, only the B20B never received the VTEC valve timing system.

Legendary motor B20B

After the restyling of the 1st generation Honda SRV in 1998, the engine added 20 horsepower and in some countries began to wear the B20Z index. I repeat, the unit is reliable and with proper maintenance will last a long time. We will tell you about proper maintenance later in this article.

From the beginning of the car's release, the transmission, like the engine, was of the same type, this is a classic automatic transmission, after restyling, a manual transmission was also added.

The first generation Honda CR-V was produced with four-wheel drive and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is plug-in, which means that by default Honda is front-wheel drive, but if the front wheels cannot cope with the road surface and begin to slip, then the rear wheels are connected to them in a split second.

Many competitors have a plug-in all-wheel drive, this is mainly a viscous coupling, its main plus is its cheapness and simplicity of design, and a minus is the belated inclusion of the rear wheels in an emergency.

DPS system

Honda decided to go its own way and released the drive, realized thanks to the DPS system with two pumps, one responsible for the front wheels, the other for the rear. This system, unlike competitors, is based on pure "mechanics", it does not need electronic control units and programs.

This achieves instant response and rear wheel engagement, thereby improving off-road capability and reducing fuel consumption. Yes, such a drive should not be compared to a permanent drive like in real SUVs with a transfer case. Honda SRV 1 will not amaze you with some kind of super-tasks on the off-road, but you can easily drive it into nature, a country road and feel confident in winter.

The suspension itself is independent, like that of the Honda Civic EG, by the way, the 1st generation Honda SRV completely borrowed the platform from the Civic in the back of the EG. Multi-link rear suspension and double wishbone front provide the urban crossover with Civic-like handling. The chassis turned out to be reliable, there were cases when the resource specified by the manufacturer was exceeded many times!

Summing up, we can safely say that the 1st generation Honda SRV 20 years later is a reliable, comfortable and functional car for an active driver.

Tuning Honda CR-V 1st generation

The court tuning studio Mugen has released a full set of modifications on the Honda SRV 1:

Honda SRV in tuning by Mugen

Year of issue: 1997

Engine: 2.0

I own a car since 2008, bought it with a mileage of 76 thousand km in Japan, now the odometer is 180 thousand km. I have never regretted a purchase, the car is very reliable, it has never seriously broken down in 5 years of operation, only current regulated costs, internal combustion engine oil, fluids, scheduled replacement of the timing belt. Of minor breakdowns: in the fifth year of operation, the upper bank of the internal combustion engine radiator began to leak, the entire radiator had to be replaced with a Chinese duplicate, since the original comes out at 20 thousand rubles, which is expensive. I changed the front stabilizer struts, since there was a small knock when driving through small irregularities, the wheel bearing rustled with a mileage of 175 thousand km, after a long drive in 40 degrees of frost, the front CV joints had to be replaced, as the anthers broke, and the grease immediately collected dirt. These are all the breakdowns that happened during the operation, I even still drive with the original spark plugs, since they are still in good condition.

The advantages of the first generation CR-V are obvious: the highest reliability, so that it does not happen, it will take you home, the capacity of the cabin, its ability to transform into one large bed or, if necessary, into a cargo-passenger version, spaciousness for passengers, very predictable in management, high ground clearance and plug-in four-wheel drive will not make you nervous when driving through snowdrifts and washed-out primers (within reasonable limits).

Of the minuses: not very cheap original spare parts, due to the absence of a gimbal tunnel, the frameless body undergoes a slight elastic twisting deformation, which is felt by the creaking skin when driving through large irregularities. The disease of the automatic transmission of this entire series, when the box starts to switch with a slight jerk, but this does not lead to a breakdown, especially since the defect manifests itself only when the automatic transmission is not warmed up, so you can live with it, and even more, at the service station it is not recommended to treat this as defect, but as a feature of the model.

The rest of the car is wonderful, I want the same, only new, but unfortunately, they have not been produced for more than 10 years. I don't like the 4th generation CR-V, since it has lost all the characteristic features of the CR-V of a moderately brutal car, with a regular table in the trunk, the absence of a longitudinal console, and the ability to transform the interior due to different folding options for the rear seats, I'm not talking about reduced ground clearance and other characteristics affecting cross-country ability, which, starting from the third generation, are inexorably falling, turning the CR-V into just an urban pontovoy station wagon.
