Toyota 1G 2.0 liter engine reliability, problems and repair.

The famous six-cylinder predecessor of the iconic 1JZ appeared in 1979 and became popular mainly in the Japanese market. The design of the first 1G engines was quite simple: a cast iron cylinder block, an aluminum head with a single camshaft, 12 valves and hydraulic lifters on top. In the future, the motor was repeatedly refined, improved, the indices were constantly changing. A description of these modifications is found below.
The timing belt uses a belt, replacing the timing belt with 1G is required every 100 thousand km, together with rollers and oil seals. Candles change every 20 thousand km.
The Toyota 1G engine was produced for a long time and since 1990 it was replaced by 1JZ
. However, the 1G remained in production until 2005.

Toyota 1G 2.0L engine problems and malfunctions

1. High consumption oils per 1G. Most likely the oil scraper rings are stuck, this is normal for engines of this age. You can try to do decarbonization, if it does not help, then you need to buy piston rings, valve stem seals, liners, oil seals, the whole set and repair the engine.
2. Oil leaks. On 1G, oil often flows through the oil pressure sensor, buy a new one and replace it, it's cheap.
3. Oil pressure 1G-FE. Often the problem is caused by the sensor itself and needs to be replaced. Check pressure and replace sensor.
4. Speed 1G-FE are floating. Check valve idle move(KXX), throttle valve, DPDZ. With the last two, you need to be careful, there is a chance to install them incorrectly.
In addition, turbochargers on turbo versions do not last too long (~ 100,000 km), an unsuccessful oil pump drive is also used, and the engine makes high demands on oil quality. Versions of 1G Beams are less reliable than atmospheric predecessors and when the timing belt breaks, the valves are bent. Monitor the condition of the belt and choose a good 1G-FE oil.
In general, 1G is very reliable, durable and has a huge motor resource, but time goes on and even the freshest 1G-FE is already quite old and worn out. What to say about the versions of the 80-90s, due to their age, anything can happen to these motors at any time.

The Toyota 1G-GTE engine is a 2-liter gasoline unit with a capacity of 210 liters. With. Due to its characteristics, the twin-turbocharged engine has earned the right to be installed on famous Japanese cars, including the Cresta and Chaser models from Toyota.

Engine history and description

ATTENTION! Found a completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption! Don't believe me? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also did not believe until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline!

The power unit was installed on Japanese-made cars designed to meet the needs domestic market island state. The line of 1G series engines began to be produced back in 1979, when the first 12-valve engine, which was not distinguished by a complex design, rolled off the assembly line. 1G-EU is the firstborn of the product line, which gave a start to the development and further popularization of motors.

As the years passed, technologies improved, as a result of which powerful and durable twin turbo units began to be installed on Toyota cars. One of these strong units was the 1G-GTE model. It is fair to say that YAMAHA specialists had a hand in modernizing the motors of this line. The GTE model began production in 1988. In 1991, after 3 years from the start of production, the last 1G-GTE engine rolled off the assembly line.

1G-GTE is an improved version of 1G-GTEU with a number of characteristics. These include: a reinforced crankshaft, a modified intake, 315 cc injectors, an intercooler, etc. The boost pressure has been increased to 0.75 bar. Motor power is 210 Horse power, which many power units of this class cannot boast of.

Advantages and disadvantages

The endurance and high quality of the power unit is noted, however, taking into account the considerable age of the engines of this brand, one cannot count on perfect operation. So, curious to know about the strong and weaknesses the motor in question. Let's start with the benefits:

  • The engine is able to withstand impressive loads without overheating. If, nevertheless, the unit is overworked and boiled, you need to notice a calm experience of significant loads
  • If the timing belt breaks, the valves will not be damaged
  • Unpretentious to fuel
  • For its power class, fuel consumption is relatively low - 5.5 liters per 100 km

Having familiarized yourself with the pros, it is worth learning about the main disadvantages of the motor:

  • Oil pressure drop
  • Floating rpm is sometimes observed, which is mostly due to idle valve or throttle
  • The quality of the oil must be high enough, since the engine of this model is whimsical to lubricant

The owner of a Japanese car with a 1G-GTE engine needs to be prepared to check the clearances once every 20 thousand kilometers, since there are no hydraulic lifters on the motor. Also, due to the impressive age of the unit, high consumption oils, which are to blame for the oil scraper rings.

What cars are equipped with 1G-GTE motors

The power unit in question was produced for the equipment of Japanese-made cars. GTE was used to equip the following cars: Chaser, Cresta and Mark II. All models passenger cars intended for the domestic market of the Land of the Rising Sun. It cannot be said with certainty that the engine modification under consideration has found wide application in equipping cars. That is why today find a suitable motor in good condition Is a rather difficult task. But if you make an effort and spend some time, you will still be able to get a reliable and hardy unit for use.

If you want to save money on the purchase of a used motor, be prepared for additional costs to restore its performance after purchase.

The power plant, a 1g fe engine, has six cylinders arranged in an in-line type. Its work is carried out on gasoline fuel. The design and production of this engine was carried out by the Japanese carmaker Toyota. This event dates back to 1988. Its predecessor is the 1G EU powertrain.

This power unit has high reliability and dynamic qualities, with a relatively simple design. It is the most successful Toyota engine, so its installation on a large number of models took almost 30 years and ended in 2007.

First generation

For eight years, its design has remained unchanged. However, the release, in 1996, the restyling of new versions of cars, forced Japanese company to modernize the body elements, as well as the engine, to obtain higher power parameters. As a result of this modernization, power, as well as torque, increased by 5 horsepower and rpm, respectively. The design changes were not significant.

Motor modifications

The 1G engine has several modifications, which are presented below:

  1. 1G-EU- The installation of the first version of this engine has been carried out since 1979 on a Toyota Crown car. The compression ratio in it is 8.8, the power indicator, at a crankshaft rotation frequency of 5400 rpm, reaches 125 hp. The torque indicator is 160 Nm, at a rotational speed of 4400 rpm. In 1983, adjustments were made, due to which there is a decrease in power by 20, and torque by 14 units, at the same crankshaft speeds. The installation of this unit was carried out on following models: Toyota Chaser X60, Cresta X50 / X60 / X70, Crown S110, Mark 2 X60, Soarer Z10 / Z.
  2. 1G-GEU. Its release lasted 5 years, from 1983 to 1988. This is an engine, the manifold of which is equipped with controls for changing the geometry of the flow of exhaust gases, and in its head, equipped with cylinders, 24 valves are installed. This contributed to the increase in power to 160 hp. and torque up to 186 Nm. In 1985, the designers reduced the number of horsepower of the car to 140 units. Installation was performed on data vehicles: Toyota Chaser X70, Mark 2 X60 / X70, Cresta X60 / X70, Crown S120, Soarer Z10 / Z20, Toyota Supra A.
  3. 1G version of GTEU - the history of production of this type lasted three years, from 1996 to 1988. This engine differs in that a turbo element was installed in it. This reduced the compression ratio to 8.5. The design of the power plant includes two turbochargers labeled CT. When a pressure of 0.5 bar is created, the power parameters given out by the engine are equal to 185 hp. at a crankshaft speed of 6200 rpm. And the torque value reaches Nm at an engine speed of rpm. Motor vehicles, with a 1G-GTEU engine installed under the hood: Toyota Chaser X70, Mark 2 X70, Cresta X70, Soarer Z20, Toyota Supra A70.
  4. 1G-GZEU / GZE was produced from 1986 to 1992. Unlike the previous engine, the turbine was replaced with an SC-14 compressor unit. Its compression ratio was 8, so the piston was replaced. Also, for the first time, the system was used in this power unit. electronic ignition... At 6,000 rpm, the engine has a power output of 160 hp. The torque parameters are 210 Nm when the tachometer value is kept at around 4000 rpm. As a result of the modernization of the product, which was produced in 1989, they began to be labeled GZE. Discharged by the compressors, the pressure was 0.5 bar. When the engine speed reaches 6000 rpm and 3600 rpm, the power and torque values are 170 hp. 230 Nm respectively. The compressor motors were installed on the following models Toyota cars: Chaser X80, Mark 2 X80, Cresta X80, Crown S130 and Soarer Z20.
  5. 1G-GE. The beginning of its release dates back to 1988, and the end of 1993. A Sensor was installed in it, which determined absolute pressure replacing the Sensor Mass Flow Air. It shows a decrease in maximum power relative to the GZE engine by 20 hp. and a maximum torque of 44 Nm. These parameters are achieved at the moment of rotation of the crankshaft at a speed of 6200 and 5400 rpm. Cars with 1G-GE engine: Toyota Chaser X80, Mark 2 X80, Cresta X80, Crown S130, Soarer Z20, Supra A70.
  6. The 1G-GTE is a modified version of the 1G-GTEU engine. Manufacturing plant modernization of the crankshaft, intercooler, injectors, as well as the intake system. This resulted in an increase in pressure to 0.75 bar. Power indicators, as well as torque were 210 hp. and 275 Nm at a crankshaft speed of 6200 and 3800 rpm. The installation was carried out on cars where the 1G-GE was installed, with the exception of the Toyota Crown.
  7. And finally, the final, most successful and longest-produced engine, labeled 1G-FE. For the first time this motor was produced in 1988 and continued to be produced for 17 years. By design features it resembles a 1G-GEU with a tapered 24-valve cylinder head. This unit replaced the 1G-EU. 135 h.p. power and 176 Nm of torque, produced by this engine.

1G-FE BEAMS

Major stage of modernization this engine took place in 1998. In connection with the release of the Altezza model, Toyota's designs were faced with the task of providing an increase in power and dynamic characteristics, without changing the engine configuration.

As a result, the frequency with which it rotates crankshaft engine has been increased, along with the compression ratio. Also, modern electronic devices, have been used in the cylinder head. You can distinguish this updated type of engine by the Beams prefix at the end of the marking. Translated from English, this means the last stage of the modernity of the motor, which he occupied in 1998.

Name power plants 1G-FE and 1G-FE Beams are similar, however, structurally they differ significantly. Therefore, the interchangeability of parts of these engines is not possible.

G series Toyota engines is a 6-cylinder in-line engine. They began in 1979 and lasted until 2006. A special feature of the G series is the fact that it lacks a variety of engine sizes. All engines have the same displacement of 2 liters (1988 cc). The gas distribution system of all engines of the series was driven by toothed belt Timing

Common malfunctions and operation

  1. Fast consumption engine oil... The reason is hidden in the sinking of the oil scraper rings, which is very typical for an engine with high mileage... De-carbonization or repair with replacement of piston rings, liners, valve stem seals, oil seals and other parts of the entire kit.
  2. Oil leak. It occurs due to wear of the pressure sensor. You need to buy and install a new one.
  3. Oil pressure instability. The problem is with the sensor itself. It is necessary to measure the pressure and replace the sensor.
  4. Change of turns. It is necessary to check the KXX valve, throttle valve and DPDZ. If you reinstall the last two, there is a possibility that they are not installed correctly.

Even on turbocharged engine modifications, turbochargers do not differ in their long service life. They need to be changed after one hundred thousand kilometers. Also not very installed good drive for the oil pump. In general, the engine requires good oil... On modifications of "Beams", when the timing belt breaks, the valves bend. In general, the motors are good, but time is making itself felt - even the latest FE-models are already quite old and worn out.

Peculiarities

The 1G engine has a displacement of two liters and develops a power of 135 horsepower. This motor, thanks to the use of a reinforced cylinder head and a connecting rod group made of ultra-strong alloy, has established itself as a fairly reliable and durable motor.

Without overhaul 1G engines, provided they are properly maintained, can run about 500 thousand kilometers. It is not uncommon for cars with 1G FE, the mileage of which exceeds a million kilometers, which testifies to the excellent reliability of this power unit.

One of the features of this engine is the presence of a belt drive of the gas distribution system. However, no decrease in the reliability of the power unit is noted. Timing belt breaks are very rare, while the advantages of such a solution are obvious.

The toothed belt drive made it possible to significantly reduce the cost of motor production, simplify maintenance of the motor, and the power unit itself is compact in size. The use of a special interferential belt drive system eliminates pistons hitting the valves when the belt breaks. Thus, even with such a serious breakdown, the car owner will be spared the need for expensive overhaul.

The gas distribution circuit of the motor is made using DOHC technology, it has four valves per cylinder. This allows you to optimize the operation of the power unit and make the most of its dynamic potential.

This motor is characterized by smooth operation over a wide rpm range. Despite the fact that the engine shows its peak power indicators at 4,400 thousand rpm, already at 1,500 rpm the engine produces more than 80 percent of its power.

The cylinder block is cast from cast iron to ensure maximum engine strength and thermal resistance. It must be said that when casting the cylinder block and cylinder head, a special alloy reinforcement technology was used, which made it possible to reduce the thickness of the cylinder walls without losing the reliability and durability of the engine. This made it possible to reduce the weight of the six-cylinder engine, and due to its small size, it can fit even in a small size engine compartment... The weight of the power unit is 180 kilograms, which is a record low for a six-cylinder engine.

Modifications

  • Since August 1998 released a new version motor - 1G FE Beams. WITH VVT-i system and increased capacity of 160 liters. With. at 6200 rpm.
  • In 1996, a small restyling of the 1G FE Beams engine was carried out. The maximum power indicator increased to 140 horsepower, and the torque was 185. The power characteristics were improved by reconfiguring the 1G FE Beams engine control unit and transferring the engine from 92 gasoline to AI 95.
However, most car owners successfully operate their cars with this engine on A-92 gasoline, and there are no complaints about the reliability and dynamics of the car.
  • In 1998, the motor was significantly changed. He received a new ShPG, an updated manifold with the ability to adjust the geometry, an updated valve timing system, a fully electronic throttle valve. The ignition system was also changed on the 1G FE Beams.

A feature of the modification of the 1G FE Beams engine is the absence of hydraulic valve clearance compensators, therefore, in 1G FE, the valves are adjusted every 20 thousand kilometers. Note that adjusting the 1G FE valves is not difficult and, with a certain amount of experience, can be done independently by the car owner.

Restyling of the 1G FE Beams allowed the engine power to be increased to 160 horsepower at 6200 engine rpm. The problem with the appearance of an oil leak from under valve cover and oil pressure sensors were replaced, which also often failed and required costly replacement.

Its only drawback is low power... In the middle of the 2000s, more than 200 horsepower could be easily removed from two liters of working volume, while even in the restyled version this engine produced only 160 horsepower. It is because of obsolescence that this one was discontinued in 2007.

Malfunctions

FAILURECAUSE
Increased oil consumption. This is the case for buried oil scraper rings.
V in this case repair consists in decoking the engine or installing new rings, valve stem seals and liners. We recommend using the appropriate repair kit, which will greatly simplify the repair work.
Oil leaks. This is a typical breakdown, especially for engine modifications before the 1998 1G FE Beams restyling. A leak appeared from under the oil sensor, which was difficult to eliminate.
The cause of the problem was the oil sensor itself, which lost its tightness and leaks appeared.
The difficulty lies in the fact that getting to the sensor and replacing it is not so easy. It is necessary to raise the engine or remove the attachment.
There are problems with the oil pressure in the internal combustion engine system. The reason is a failed oil sensor.
We recommend checking the pressure in the system and replacing the failed sensor.
The emergence of floating idle speed. It is necessary to check the idle valve and throttle valve. This work must be performed exclusively by a specialist, which will guarantee the complete elimination of problems with the engine.

Tuning

  1. The simplest option for increasing the power of the 1G FE motor is chip tuning, in which an additional power unit operation control unit is installed. As a result, it is possible to obtain a small increase in power, which, depending on the specific chip, can amount to 5-20 horsepower.
  2. The popular 1G FE Beams tuning program includes the installation of a turbine, boost controller, intercooler, replacement of the exhaust, engine control unit and exhaust system. As a result, it is possible to completely change the dynamic characteristics, raising the engine power to the level of 300 horsepower. However, it should be noted that the resource of such a forced engine is significantly reduced.
  3. It is possible to replace the standard exhaust system of the 1GR FE engine, which makes it possible to add about 5 percent of the power. There are many options for sports exhaust systems for Toyota cars. It is only necessary to choose the option that is suitable for a specific car and engine.
  4. Of the available tuning options for 1G FE Beams, a motor swap can be noted, which will allow you to install it in a small engine compartment turbocharged motor, with a capacity of about 200 horsepower. The advantage of this option is the complete preservation of the resource of the power unit, and if it is possible to implement the old replacement motor, the car owner will be able to significantly reduce his tuning costs.
