After the "six" I realized: I want a foreign car

The first own car in the life of Evgeny became "Zhiguli" of the sixth model, which was presented to him by his aged grandfather.

- Do not think that it was old car... My grandfather bought it new in 1996 in Togliatti, did not drive much, so the car was well preserved, and for me, as a student, it was a very generous gift. Of course, like everyone else Soviet cars, she constantly required minor repairs, so after a couple of years I, consider, received the qualification of a mechanic.

All this time, Eugene studied at a mechanical engineering college, then went to work at MTZ.

- It was quite difficult to work: assembling tractors on a conveyor belt, after the shift I also worked part-time in a taxi company, helped a friend in the paint brushes. Later, these skills came in handy. It was thanks to a friend that I got acquainted with the Golf II. Compared to "Zhiguli" - heaven and earth. It seemed to me everything was perfect in him: and appearance, and management. I wanted the same, only special - GTi, even then I was sure that there would be enough knowledge and experience to restore.

GTi from grandfather

Before you go, choose your new car, Eugene managed to read a lot about the desired model and decided for himself that he would check everything carefully. But as soon as he got behind the wheel of the first inspected car, he lost all skepticism.

- This Golf was sold by a young man, there was a lot of "collective farm" tuning in the car. Behind there was a huge spoiler of unknown origin, the steering wheel was the cheapest China. But I caught fire, I thought: "Here it is, my car, I will throw out all unoriginal". The seller, seeing my eyes, even threw off the price a little. But then a friend came to the rescue, who, unlike me, meticulously examined the car. He literally took it by the hand and pointed to the bottom ... And it was rotten, covered with some kind of black paste and almost covered with newspapers.


With the second car, Eugene was more fortunate - it was the original GTi, which was sold by an elderly couple.

- I understood that there can be a big difference between what is in the photographs and what is in life, so imagine my surprise when a well-groomed Golf GTi stood in front of me. The condition was as close as possible to his own, and his wife was selling it. The owner was well over 60 years old. His wife is a teacher of English language, said that the car began to break down more often, and it is difficult for them, the old people, to go to the service station. According to the documents, the car has been in their hands since 1996.


During the inspection, it turned out that the bottom was in perfect condition, they noticed a slight blow from the front, and rust accumulated near the towbar. A fender pad was welded in, the front passenger door was changed. But, surprisingly, when I was already removing the trim in the garage, I saw that the rear fender was all in black soil. This indicates that the car was made for a very long time, and the body elements were installed new. They also pasted the original sticker on the board, like from the factory.

A month preparing for painting

The 1985 Golf GTi cost Evgeny $ 2,500, which for 2009 was a lot of money for such a car. He did not have the entire amount, so he had to borrow the missing part from his friends. As a small compensation, Lithuanian coins were found under the rug.


- When I started painting the car, my skills as a painter left much to be desired. The first time I decided to reproduce the original color - burgundy, but it turned out so-so. The door was knocked out of the general range, it is a little darker. Therefore, it was decided to change both the color and the approach to the process. For a whole month I was preparing the car for painting: I cleaned it with an eccentric sander, flattened all the dents, brought out the planes with a meter block.

Initially, Eugene wanted to repaint the car in a chameleon color from black to red, but the idea turned out to be too expensive. A can of paint cost $ 150, and the car needed 2-3. Considering the costs ahead, it was serious cost overrun budget.

- When I realized that I wouldn’t pull the “chameleon”, but my soul wanted something unusual, I bought a special Candy powder “red apple”. First, I painted the body in a black base, then mixed the purchased powder with the binder, after which, for fidelity, I applied four coats of sikkens varnish. In the end, I think it turned out a little defiant, but my friends liked it.





In dim lighting in the morning, seemingly normal black. But as soon as the sun rises, the Golf becomes black and burgundy, and not just black and burgundy. It is difficult to describe this color in words, it is better to see it in the photo.

V-shaped six for GTi

Initially, under the hood was a stock 1.8-liter EV eight-valve engine with a capacity of 112 hp. with., which Evgeny did not suit with its dynamics.

- Initially I wanted to supply a 139 hp 16-valve KR engine. with. We managed to find two motors in an acceptable condition, but after measuring the compression they had to be abandoned. I was upset, of course, but what could I do, I went to dig the Internet again.

On the Web, Eugene found necessary information, from which he learned that it is possible to install a 2.8-liter V-six on the second Golf.

Suitable engine was found in Brest, he was on the Passat B3. Together with the body kit, the motor cost $ 1,100 at the time. V engine compartment he fit without problems, put it on his own. But I'm not friends with an electrician, I had to give it to a specialist.

Together with the engine, Evgeny installed a K&N filter, a five-speed "Passat" box, an equal-length exhaust manifold, and the car started moving.

- When 174 horses settled under the hood, the Golf became much more fun to ride. The first hundred is gaining in 6.5 seconds. Enough power on the track when overtaking in excess. The plans are to deliver a new V6, 280-horsepower engine from the Passat B6.

Almost lowrider

The idea to understate Golf came to Evgeny by accident and, according to him, this is a temporary state of the car.

- Looking through the American forums dedicated to VW, I often came across projects of understated Golf. Well, the effect of the 25th frame worked, probably. Therefore, I decided to install a TAtehnix-20−80 helical suspension. Lowered to the maximum, the car looks very sporty. The front lip, which is very short-lived, by the way, adds that feeling. It is soft and quickly covered with scratches, after which it only needs to be changed. Therefore, I bought several of these in reserve.

In such the form of a Golf GTi managed to take part in several car festivals, where it aroused the continued interest of the public.

- Of course, the small clearance causes a lot of inconvenience, especially when traveling to Odessa, then I even had to raise the car a few turns. In Minsk, slight difficulties with the passage of speed bumps also occur. But it was not this that influenced my decision to return the car to its original appearance. Over time, the low suspension began to look like a foreign element on the Golf. Therefore, the plans are to abandon it.

Lucky chance and rare discs

Golf II GTi Eugene is distinguished by the presence of rare elements that can rightfully be the envy of many avid golfers.

And all of them went to our hero absolutely by accident.

- I remember, looking through the ads, out of the corner of my eye I caught the second Golf, beaten by life, which was sold by a resident of Chashnikov. This car had rare folding vents. Such in standard configuration they did not put on this car, but made them by the Happych atelier. Today it is very rare. I honestly couldn’t believe my eyes, I looked at the pictures several times.

The seller agreed to Evgeny's offer to exchange ordinary glass for glass with vents, but with an additional charge.

- Even heavily used vents start at $ 350. Everything cost me much cheaper. It was a real lucky break.

However, this was not the only happy accident in the history of the Golf II reconstruction.

- For a long time I wanted to find original discs BBS RS. These are three-piece racing wheel disks... V good condition they cost a lot of money. And imagine my surprise when, returning home from work one day, I saw them on the neighboring Passat B3. Without a moment's hesitation, I wrote a note and put it under the wiper of the car.

The neighbor called back the next day. We agreed that Evgeny would buy a new cast kit for $ 150 for the wheels and pay another $ 20.

- The discs purchased were in a terrible state. The fact is that forged wheels themselves are light and strong, and upon impact, they begin to crack, and even welding will help here only temporarily. But it was very important for me that they were on my Golf II. Now I am engaged in their restoration. It is like finding a rare vase of the Chinese dynasty for an archaeologist: yes, there will be cracks on it, but this will not diminish its value.

Eugene wants to change the preserved interior for a sports one from the Recaro, which was installed on the GTi.

- The plans for customization are big. This is to alter the old Recaro chairs, which were put on this second Golf, into leather. They have the strongest lateral support, by the way. It is a very rare thing to supply an original air conditioner. I happened to see one of these on disassembly, but the kit was incomplete, so I had to refuse the purchase. In addition, the R12 reagent was poured into these air conditioners, which is now prohibited. And to switch to the approved R134, you need special equipment. Well, I want to find my own radio radio.

Holiday car

Throughout the winter and part of the spring, Evgeniy's Golf is in the garage, his time comes in the summer, when rare driving trips turn into a real holiday for the owner.

- If you often drive, you lose the feeling of the importance of the moment: you just get behind the wheel and go about your business. This Golf was built for something else. Each trip is a real ceremony. Everything: from preparing the car to refueling with gas and turning the key in the lock - keeps the atmosphere of the holiday. It's hard to put it into words like this.
