Peculiarities

The 1G engine has a displacement of two liters and develops a power of 135 horsepower. This motor, thanks to the use of a reinforced cylinder head and a connecting rod group made of ultra-strong alloy, has established itself as a fairly reliable and durable motor.

Without overhaul 1G engines, provided they are properly maintained, can run about 500 thousand kilometers. It is not uncommon for cars with 1G FE, the mileage of which exceeds a million kilometers, which testifies to the excellent reliability of this power unit.

One of the features of this engine is the presence of a belt drive of the gas distribution system. However, no decrease in the reliability of the power unit is noted. Timing belt breaks are very rare, while the advantages of such a solution are obvious.

The toothed belt drive made it possible to significantly reduce the cost of motor production, simplify maintenance of the motor, and the power unit itself is compact in size. The use of a special interferential belt drive system eliminates pistons hitting the valves when the belt breaks. Thus, even with such a serious breakdown, the car owner will be relieved of the need for expensive overhaul.

The gas distribution circuit of the motor is made using DOHC technology, it has four valves per cylinder. This allows you to optimize the operation of the power unit and make the most of its dynamic potential.

This motor is characterized by smooth operation over a wide rpm range. Despite the fact that the engine shows its peak power indicators at 4,400 thousand rpm, already at 1,500 rpm the engine produces more than 80 percent of its power.

The cylinder block is cast from cast iron to ensure maximum engine strength and thermal resistance. It must be said that when casting the cylinder block and cylinder head, a special alloy reinforcement technology was used, which made it possible to reduce the thickness of the cylinder walls without losing the reliability and durability of the engine. This made it possible to reduce the weight of the six-cylinder engine, and due to its small size, it can fit even in a small engine compartment. The weight of the power unit is 180 kilograms, which is a record low for a six-cylinder engine.

Modifications

  • Since August 1998 released a new version motor - 1G FE Beams. WITH VVT-i system and increased capacity of 160 liters. with. at 6200 rpm.
  • In 1996, a small restyling of the 1G FE Beams engine was carried out. The maximum power indicator increased to 140 horsepower, and the torque was 185. The power characteristics were improved by reconfiguring the 1G FE Beams engine control unit and transferring the engine from 92 gasoline to AI 95.
However, most car owners successfully operate their cars with this engine on A-92 gasoline, and there are no complaints about the reliability and dynamics of the car.
  • In 1998, the motor was significantly changed. He received a new ShPG, an updated manifold with the ability to adjust the geometry, an updated valve timing system, completely electronic throttle... Also, the ignition system was changed on the 1G FE Beams.

A feature of the modification of the 1G FE Beams engine is the absence of hydraulic valve clearance compensators, therefore, in 1G FE, the valves are adjusted every 20 thousand kilometers. Note that adjusting the 1G FE valves is not difficult and, with a certain amount of experience, can be done independently by the car owner.

Restyling of 1G FE Beams allowed to increase the engine power up to 160 horsepower at 6200 engine rpm. The problem with the appearance of an oil leak from under the valve cover was eliminated and the oil pressure sensors were replaced, which also often failed and required an expensive replacement.

Its only drawback is low power... In the middle of the 2000s, more than 200 horsepower could be easily removed from two liters of working volume, while even in the restyled version this engine produced only 160 horsepower. It is because of obsolescence that this one was discontinued in 2007.

Malfunctions

FAILURECAUSE
Increased oil consumption. This is the case for buried oil scraper rings.
V this case repair consists in decoking the engine or installing new rings, valve stem seals and liners. We recommend using the appropriate repair kit, which will greatly simplify the repair work.
Oil leaks. This is a typical breakdown, especially for engine modifications before the 1998 1G FE Beams restyling. A leak appeared from under the oil sensor, which was difficult to eliminate.
The cause of the problem was the oil sensor itself, which lost its tightness and leaks appeared.
The difficulty lies in the fact that getting to the sensor and replacing it is not so easy. It is necessary to raise the engine or remove the attachment.
There are problems with the oil pressure in the internal combustion engine system. The reason is a failed oil sensor.
We recommend checking the pressure in the system and replacing the failed sensor.
The emergence of floating revolutions idle move. It is necessary to check the idle valve and throttle valve. This work must be carried out exclusively by a specialist, which will guarantee the complete elimination of problems with the engine.

Tuning

  1. The simplest option for increasing the power of the 1G FE motor is chip tuning, in which an additional power unit operation control unit is installed. As a result, it is possible to obtain a small increase in power, which, depending on the specific chip, can amount to 5-20 horsepower.
  2. The popular 1G FE Beams tuning program includes the installation of a turbine, boost controller, intercooler, replacement of the exhaust, engine control unit and exhaust system. As a result, it is possible to completely change the dynamic characteristics, raising the engine power to the level of 300 horsepower. However, it should be noted that the resource of such a forced engine is significantly reduced.
  3. It is possible to replace the standard exhaust system of the 1GR FE engine, which makes it possible to add about 5 percent of the power. There are many options for sports exhaust systems for Toyota cars. It is only necessary to choose the option that is suitable for a specific car and engine.
  4. Of the available tuning options for 1G FE Beams, a motor swap can be noted, which will allow you to install it in a small engine compartment turbocharged engine, with a capacity of about 200 horsepower. The advantage of this option is the complete preservation of the resource of the power unit, and if it is possible to implement the old replacement motor, the car owner will be able to significantly reduce his tuning costs.

The 1G engine is part of the line of power units that are produced for Toyota vehicles. The release of the power unit began back in 1979. This engine is the predecessor of the legendary 1JZ.

Characteristics and features of motors

The 1G motor has high technical characteristics. The simplicity of the design allows you to repair and service the motor yourself. Cast iron block on which a 12-valve head is installed.

One of the most successful Toyota engines, which has been on the assembly line for about 17 years. The engine was installed mainly on rear-wheel drive vehicles of the "above average" class. Released models with 1G-FE:, Crown, Soarer. The main advantages include the huge resource of the 1G-FE motor. There are several reasons for this:

Device crankshaft and his bed such that the wear of his supporting necks is minimal, due to their large number.

Excellent balance of the in-line six-cylinder engine - as a result, the minimum level of vibration and noise during operation. The 1G-FE engine at idle is not felt at all in the cabin, there is no sound or vibration. With the engine running, you can safely put a coin with an edge on valve cover and she will stay in this position! Even if you smoothly play with the throttle! (provided that all systems are fully operational: engine mounts, ignition systems, spark plugs, armor wires, etc.)

Also, a big plus to the resource is not a big overall boost of the 1G-FE motor. From the inline two-liter, six-cylinder layout, the Japanese removed 135 hp. in the first version of this engine. In the 1G-FE restyling, Toyota engineers were able to raise the power to 140 hp, with the introduction of an updated engine management system and revised injectors. Whatever one may say, even with this increase - this result of the engine recoil is far from outstanding. Especially when you consider that the cylinder head is quite developed and has 4 valves per cylinder (24 in total).

General quality of workmanship of Japanese motors of the 90s. Maintainability 1G-FE. The engine is the "millionaire from the 90s" from Toyota. The cylinder block is made of cast iron and has repair dimensions. Genuine spare parts are available to order now. Most repair these engines with duplicates and continue to operate the 1G-FE engine without problems.

There are no pronounced shortcomings, like the entire series of 1G motors. The entire line is distinguished by increased requirements for good engine oil and observance of its replacement intervals.

Difficulty cold starting is a common problem. In 90% of cases, it is solved by adjusting the valves. It is also worth checking whether the nozzles are holding the pressure. They can fill the engine with gasoline overnight and the 1G-FE will not start in frosty morning. On a pre-styling engine (up to 90-91) 1G-FE, a cold start system was installed, which Toyota subsequently abandoned. It consists of an additional seventh cold start injector (it also may not hold the rail pressure and fill the engine), which is installed in the intake manifold. And a thermo-temporary cold start relay. There are no duplicates, the original is expensive. Only a working used unit .. If all this did not help, see: compression, then to the engine control unit (checked with a multimeter according to the resistance table), candles, wires, distributor, fuel pump, fuel filter, water in the tank, fuel rail check valves.

The main enemy of these engines is time. How not cool the youngest is 15+ years old. Even in the smallest 1G-FE motor, everything rubber seals lose their properties. Whether it's oil-removable seals or oil seals. Also a frequent occurrence is coking of oil-removable rings from time to time.

Many people are faced with the unstable idle speed of the 1G-FE. In these cases, you need to adjust the TPS, clean the throttle body and check the DTOZH.

The attachments are extremely reliable but also suffer from time to time. Sensors, lambda probe, generator, starter, water pump (pump) and so on.

The 1G-FE motor does not like moisture when washing the engine. Candle wells are quite deep, therefore, after a non-contact washing, it is better to thoroughly blow them with air from the compressor. Visco-muff, in case of falling into a deep puddle, throws everything engine compartment water. The distributor also easily floods with water. So with a sink and through deep puddles without fanaticism.

Buying a car with such an engine (certainly one of the best motors Toyota of those years), be prepared for maintenance and / or replacement of all these little things. Fortunately, all spare parts for the 1G-FE motor are now available.

Toyota 1G 2.0 liter engine reliability, problems and repair.

The famous six-cylinder predecessor of the iconic 1JZ appeared in 1979 and became popular mainly in the Japanese market. The design of the first 1G engines was quite simple: a cast iron cylinder block, an aluminum head with a single camshaft, 12 valves and hydraulic lifters on top. In the future, the motor was repeatedly refined, improved, the indices were constantly changing. A description of these modifications is found below.
The timing belt uses a belt, replacing the timing belt with 1G is required every 100 thousand km, together with rollers and oil seals. Candles change every 20 thousand km.
The Toyota 1G engine was produced for a long time and since 1990 it was replaced by 1JZ
. However, the 1G remained in production until 2005.

Cars with this engine: Toyota Chaser X100, Mark 2 X100, Cresta X100, Crown S150.
In 1998, the 1G-FE underwent more serious changes and received the BEAMS prefix. From the innovations, 1G received a new ShPG, a variable valve timing system on the intake shaft, an intake manifold with variable geometry ACIS, an electronic throttle valve, the ignition system has undergone changes, the exhaust manifold has been modified. There are no hydraulic compensators on 1G-FE, so every 20 thousand km it is necessary to check the clearances. The valves on the 1G-FE BEAMS are adjusted using washers, the clearances ( cold engine): inlet 0.15-0.25 mm, outlet 0.25-0.35 mm. The valves on the 1G-GE / GTE / GZE / GEU / GTEU are adjusted in the same way.
Brief characteristics of 1G BEAMS: The compression ratio has increased to 10, the power is now 160 hp. at 6200 rpm, torque 200 Nm at 4400 rpm.
Installed 1G-FE BEAMS on: Toyota Mark 2 X100 / X110, Chaser X100, Crown S150 / S170, Verossa, Altezza, Lexus IS 200.

Toyota 1G 2.0L engine problems and malfunctions

1. High consumption oil for 1G. Most likely the oil scraper rings are stuck, this is normal for engines of this age. You can try to do decarbonization, if it does not help, then you need to buy piston rings, valve stem seals, liners, oil seals, the whole set and do engine repairs.
2. Oil leaks. On 1G, oil often flows through the oil pressure sensor, buy a new one and replace it, it's cheap.
3. Oil pressure 1G-FE. Often, the problem is caused by the sensor itself and needs to be replaced. Check pressure and replace sensor.
4. Speed 1G-FE are floating. Check the idle valve (KXX), throttle valve, DPDZ. With the last two, you need to be careful, there is a chance to install them incorrectly.
In addition, turbochargers on turbo versions do not last too long (~ 100,000 km), an unsuccessful oil pump drive was also used, and the engine makes high demands on oil quality. Versions of 1G Beams are less reliable than atmospheric predecessors and when the timing belt breaks, the valves are bent. Monitor the condition of the belt and choose good oil for 1G-FE.
In general, the 1G is very reliable, durable and has a huge motor resource, but time goes forward and even the freshest 1G-FE is already quite old and worn out. What to say about the versions of the 80-90s, due to their age, anything can happen to these motors at any time.
