Auto ix35 reviews popular faults. Hyundai ix35 review: With a new outlook on life. Steering system

Hyundai ix35 and Kia Sportage, which were produced from 2010 to 2015, are the third generation of models. The cars differ in appearance, but are still considered brothers, and now we will find out what problems they have over time.

The cars have different countries of production: all Hyundai ix35 were produced not in Russia, but in the Czech Republic, Slovakia or South Korea, but the Kia Sportage, in most cases, was assembled at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad. It doesn’t matter in which country the car was produced, all the same, the varnish on plastic elements peels off over time, and the tight-fitting film peels off on chrome elements. Also, chips and scratches appear over time because the paintwork is not particularly durable. True, cars painted in metallic color are more resistant to scratches and chips.

The body is made of pretty decent steel, so the car is not afraid of rust. Rust on the body cannot be found on cars manufactured even in 2010, because during this time rust has not yet formed and the body is more or less protected. And chips and scratches mainly appear on the hood. It also happens that the trunk lid begins to make noise on uneven surfaces, so that it stops doing this, you need to adjust the lock hinge. Or you can glue a seal near the lock, then there will also be no squeaks or rattles.

The condition of the seats varies. On the Kia Sportage, the leather seats on older examples are seriously worn out, especially the cushion upholstery. And before buying a Hyundai ix35, you need to check whether the sponge padding of the seat is in order. Usually, if the previous owner was large, the chair may become sagging after 3 years. A new chair cushion costs $360.

Both crossovers do not particularly like winter, especially the windshields, which cost about $400, sometimes break. It often happens that the panoramic sunroof jams in winter because it uses weak mechanics.

Electrics

Kia and Hyundai also have electrical problems. It happens that warning lights start to glow for no reason, due to the fact that the brake light sensor is faulty. It is advisable to change the limit switch as soon as possible, it is inexpensive and costs only $10, because the frog on the pedal may completely fail, then it will not be possible to switch the automatic transmission selector from parking to drive mode. On cars that have a button-based engine start, there is a feature that sometimes the engine does not start immediately, so you need to hold the button longer, without holding the brake pedal.

There are also cases that on the oldest cars, the keyless entry system no longer recognizes its owner, and the instrument panel may simply go out or all the lights may turn on at once. But if this happened during the warranty period, then the dealerships would replace the entire instrument panel at once; it costs $460. It also happens that the multimedia system unit malfunctions; in order to change it, you will have to spend $250. When purchasing, you need to pay attention to whether Bluetooth works.

After 4 years of operation, it happens that the stove motor, which costs $100, begins to make noise. At the same time, parking sensors may break down, each of which costs $90. After 5 years of operation, when reverse gear is engaged, if a black screen turns on instead of the rear view image, then this means the rear view camera has failed because it is poorly protected from moisture. A new camera like this costs $250.

And the transmission on all-wheel drive vehicles also does not like driving on water. When water gets into the couplings, after 20,000 km. will fail, and the car will become front-wheel drive. The Hyundai ix35 has a new JTEKT electromechanical clutch that costs $700, while the Kia Sportage has a Magna Powertrain clutch that costs $1,200. But these units are constantly being modernized; cars produced in 2016 had the latest coupling modernization.

But with the front-wheel drive Hyundai ix35 and Kia Sportage, the situation is no better on cars that are older than 2012. Already after 40,000 km. could cut off the splines of the intermediate shaft, which passed through the transfer case, because rust appeared there. Dealers replaced these spare parts under warranty, but after 2013 the heat treatment of the spline part was changed, they began to use new lubricant and added a rubber seal.

You also need to monitor the boots and shaft seals on all-wheel drive vehicles with an automatic transmission, because usually after 150,000 km. Corrosion may develop on the spline joints and may result in a transfer case replacement, which costs $1,500. Therefore, it is better to drive your car less often through deep puddles and mud baths off-road.

It happens that the outboard bearing of the propeller shaft begins to make noise. Usually it and the support need to be changed after 100,000 km. After 2013, the driveshaft became better protected from dirt. Therefore, the first thing after about 120,000 km. The elastic coupling, which is located in the connection of the cardan with the rear gearbox, began to require replacement; a new such coupling costs $90. If in the gearbox every 100,000 km. change the oil, it will also last a very long time.

There are configurations of these models with manual transmissions; they are considered reliable and break down extremely rarely. The Kia Sportage is equipped with a 5-speed M5GF1 gearbox; it sometimes develops a hum due to the differential bearing after 50,000 km. mileage In 2011, the box was modernized, so this hum no longer existed. Also in the same year, a 6-speed manual transmission M6GF appeared. It is installed on petrol and diesel versions. True, on diesel versions it happens that the dual-mass flywheel breaks, and there are often cases that it needs to be changed along with the clutch every 120,000 km.

Prices for Kia Sportage

Hyundai ix35 prices

An original 2-mass flywheel for a weak diesel engine costs $1,000, and for a more powerful diesel engine – 1,600. But you can save money by buying a non-original one for $500. Also quite durable and automatic 6-speed automatics - HPT A6MF1 for gasoline engines and A6LF2 for diesel engines, there are no problems with the mechanical component, but problems can occur with electrics and hydraulics.

For example, after several years of operation, spool valves may become loose and solenoids with sensors may fail; if this happens, the car usually begins to jerk in odd gears or in reverse. Also, the channels in the valve body may become clogged; to prevent this from happening, the oil in the box must be changed at least every 60,000 km. A new hydraulic unit costs $1,000, and if you don’t change the oil, the clutches will burn out due to improper pressure; each clutch costs $150.

There is also a torque converter in the box, which does not particularly like fast driving with sharp starts; if it fails, you will have to fork out $1,150, which is exactly how much a new torque converter costs. There are also cases when the transmission starts to stall when you press the gas pedal sharply. But this can be corrected by reprogramming the control unit.

Motors

There are no special problems with the engines; the 2-liter G4KD gasoline-powered engine, Theta II series 2005, works with a reliable timing chain. The engine also uses an aluminum cylinder block, which will last at least 250,000 km. But a new unit like this costs $2,600; it’s easier to find another motor somewhere.

The engine loves good oil; if you constantly drive at high speeds, oil consumption will be inevitable - about 0.5 liters per 1000 km. Therefore, you need to monitor the oil level to avoid oil starvation, which can lead to serious consequences. On cars manufactured after 2011, the crankcase began to hold 6 liters, and on cars manufactured before 2011, the crankcase was designed to hold 4 liters. In 2012, the G4NA motor of the Nu series appeared; it now began to use a hydraulic compensator in the valve mechanism.

Diesel engines are also good, especially the 184-horsepower 2-liter D4HA diesel engine with a timing chain. This engine is faster than the gasoline version, it is not noisy, there are no vibrations, and the reliability is quite high. There is also a diesel engine with less power - 136 hp. With. It has its differences from a more powerful diesel engine; the design of the fuel equipment, hydraulic compressor and cylinder head is different, and the cylinder-piston group is also different. Sometimes there are cases when the boost pressure sensor on both diesel engines begins to malfunction; this will be indicated by dips in traction or twitching when driving at medium speeds.

A new sensor like this costs 25 euros. If you fill in bad diesel fuel, the injection pump manufactured by Bosch will quickly fail; it costs $1,000. Also after 200,000 km. Garrett turbochargers, which also cost approximately $1,000, may begin to malfunction. All other elements of diesel engines are quite reliable, but they can also fail, and they are not cheap. But if you don’t kill the motor on purpose, it will last quite a long time.

Suspension

As for the suspension, both cars are not famous for their reliability and excellent driving performance. Especially on the oldest cars, suspension can create quite a few headaches. Even the shock absorbers began to tap after 10,000 km. mileage Many owners of these cars have had their shock absorbers replaced under warranty several times. In addition to the knocking of the shock absorbers, it happens that the boots fly off the shock absorbers, which leads to even faster wear. Dealers began to fight this disease with sealant. And the rear springs after 25,000 km. they begin to sag, so that if you load the trunk, the car will sometimes touch the road. Also, the silent blocks on the rear multi-link suspension begin to creak. But this can be eliminated if these silent blocks are cleaned and well lubricated with silicone.

Suspension problems were so frequent that in 2011 the strut design had to be modified. In 2013 there was a restyling, during which the suspension was seriously altered - the rear springs were strengthened, the shock absorbers and silent blocks were improved, the rear stabilizer struts were also changed. So, problems with the suspension after restyling have become significantly less. Shock absorbers began to last 80,000 km, but when replacing it is better to install not original shock absorbers, but analogues from trusted manufacturers; they may even cost more than the original ones, but they will last longer. Struts and stabilizer bushings last no longer than 30,000 km. Spare parts are inexpensive, but you still have to go to a service center and have them replaced. After 80,000 km. The wheel bearings also need to be replaced. Silent blocks last approximately 90,000 km.

You also need to listen to the electric power steering, especially after 120,000 km, the splined joints can usually start to knock. There have been cases where rack and pinion mechanisms have already been changed under warranty after 50,000 km. A new rack costs $850.

In general, the Hyundai ix35 and Kia Sportage are the same in terms of reliability, they are not very reliable, but in general you can drive them, spare parts are not particularly expensive and if you don’t kill the car on purpose, then it will drive for some time. These cars also have competitors, for example, the Honda CR-V, which does not break down a little longer, but it will also be about 200,000 rubles more expensive. But the Nissan Qashqai costs the same, and in terms of reliability it is no different.

In 2010, the Koreans greatly surprised the automotive world by releasing several models that looked radically different from their popular predecessors. Thanks to the series, which received the overall index ix, Hyundai, if not a trendsetter in auto fashion, at least earned a prize for the will to win and determination. Usually a change of generations is accompanied by some continuity in appearance.

However, if we put Tucson and ix35 side by side, then the only thing they have in common is the shape of the wheels and the brand nameplate. It should be noted that this did not prevent the new product from gaining sufficient popularity and not putting its predecessor, which sold well, to shame. With some reservations, we can say that the ix35 is not inferior to the Tucson in terms of reliability. However, there are not many reservations.

Don't be overzealous! There's no point in being a hero off-road.
The ix35 is strong in demonstrations, but not in reality

HEART ON A CHAIN
After the craze for timing belt drives, automakers took, in the words of a classic of scientific communism, “two steps back.” All Hyundai ix35 engines have a good old chain in the timing drive. And this is good! After all, both the chain and the drive are somewhat different from those that were in fashion thirty years ago. Quiet, reliable and require replacement only once every 100,000 km. It all costs, however, more than previous models, but, say, the chain itself can be found for 600 rubles, and the tensioner shoe - for 200. Three engines were installed on the ix35, and all of them are two-liter. Powerful diesel engines - 136 l. With. and 184 l. With. and gasoline - 150 l. With.

Nobody particularly complains about the reliability of power units. Both petrol and diesel versions are bought equally readily. Among the features, we can note the need to periodically flush the fuel system of a gasoline engine. It is useful to do this once a year. In addition, owners are surprised to note that fuel consumption can significantly exceed factory data. In the city, 15 liters of AI-95 per 100 km is not too much... Diesels behave more decently, not going beyond the 12-liter mark. In general, for engines with a displacement of 2.0 liters, these are not the best efficiency indicators. All engines are quite quiet, but the fuel pump is unexpectedly noisy. There is no need to be afraid of this, noise is not a sign of imminent death, but a feature of the work.

THERE'S KNOCKING, OPEN!
What annoys the Hyundai ix35 owner the most is the suspension. The first knocks appear already at 50,000 km. The ix35's suspension, as is typical for crossovers, is completely independent, with a McPherson strut in front and a multi-link in the rear. Structurally, it is similar to the one used in the Tucson, and at the same time to the one used on the i40 sedan. It’s not particularly soft, but you can’t call it tooth-crushing either. But the suspension travel is too small, and when driving actively on bad roads, hitting the bump stops becomes commonplace. Next, the shock absorbers begin to knock, then the anthers and bump stops of the struts fly off, and at the end of the cacophony, the “bones” of the stabilizer are added. At the service center, these knocking noises are not always recognized as a warranty case or even explained as a feature of the model.

Much, of course, depends on driving style and road conditions. Replacing shock absorbers and stabilizer bushings, fixing anthers and bump stops do not help for long - especially if you jump over speed bumps without slowing down. Spare parts are not too expensive. The front shock absorber boots will cost several hundred rubles per pair, the rear ones a little less, but not less than 400. Actually, the front struts cost from five to seven thousand per pair. The rear ones are a little cheaper. By the way, the shock absorbers offered at services from the manufacturer may not be of the best quality and characteristics. If you value comfort and handling, splurge on something more substantial, even a Koni.

THERE IS NO ENOUGH SKIN
In 2010, the Hyundai ix35 attracted buyers not only with its revolutionary design for the brand, but also with a very good interior. We are talking about the configuration and finishing materials. The interior of the top versions is especially rich. All the necessary options are present and operate without failure. However, this was not without a fly in the ointment. Larger people complain that the seat padding is not durable enough and crumbles in places of contact with the metal frame already in the second year of use. The leather upholstery of the steering wheel and the gear selector handle turned out to be not of very high quality. Or rather, its quality varies from batch to batch. There have been cases when it was necessary to completely change the skin on the steering wheel that had peeled off after 30,000 km. Fortunately, there isn't much leather trim. An unpleasant discovery for the owner can be the mournful “songs” of the interior with the onset of the first frost: the seats creaking, the box between them, something in the depths of the instrument panel, door panels. It is not always possible to find sources of annoying sound. However, the creaking can suddenly disappear.

Two plus three. The engines are only two-liter, and there are three of them.
Two of them are diesel and this is the best choice

DO NOT TURN

The main thing when choosing a Hyundai ix35 is to avoid black cars. Not only does it hide the bizarre curves of the body, but also all the scratches will be visible. And the paintwork of the Korean crossover scratches easily, even too much. Nobody has seen rusty cars yet, but chips down to the ground can be found in almost all of them. Another unpleasant tradition is poor closing of doors. Moreover, it is not only the fact of poor closing that is depressing, but also the sound with which this happens. Therefore, you should develop the habit of slamming doors “strongly, but carefully,” as they say in the famous comedy. But the strength of the plastic deserves, if not an A, then certainly a positive rating. In addition, prices for body kit parts from third-party manufacturers are low. Let's say a rear bumper can be found for 9,000 rubles. With metal, everything is not so rosy, but it’s not catastrophic either. The front fender costs from 2,500 rubles, and the right one is cheaper than the left. Hood - about 13,000, driver's door - 17,000, right front - a little over 20,000, fifth door - about 22,000 rubles.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

Formally, the ix35 is a crossover, an all-terrain vehicle, but its off-road features are severely limited by developed overhangs and low ground clearance. The declared 175 mm were formed only after last year's restyling; before that, there was 170 mm under the front suspension beam. All-wheel drive, of course, helps, but not always. The engine air intake is located under the edge of the hood, actually in front of the radiator, and when driving in a snowstorm it can become so clogged with snow that the engine loses traction. Otherwise, the Hyundai can be called an “all-weather” car. In the same snow, it is capable of hitting a 30-centimeter rut on virgin soil. But it’s better not to go deeper. Have pity on both the car and yourself!

Owner's opinion: Kirill, Hyundai ix35, 2.0, CRDi, AT, 4WD, 2012.

I drove a Tucson, was satisfied and consciously changed the car to the ix35. After the purchase, I read very negative reviews on the Internet, descriptions of some terrible breakdowns of everything... Maybe I was lucky, but the only problem I encountered in two years of operation was the knocking of the front struts and the failure of the rear wiper motor. By the way, there were no motors in the warehouse and we had to wait almost a month. Well, the interior also creaks somewhere in the area of the front seats. True, only in cold weather and only until it warms up. The rest of the car makes me happy. I travel a lot; we went on vacation to Italy this summer. On the highway, the fuel consumption of a loaded all-wheel drive vehicle barely reaches 8 liters! Isn't it great?

As for the body of the Hyundai ix35, it is still premature to talk about its tendency to corrosion, since even the earliest copies of the Korean crossover have just completed their first five-year anniversary. But certain conclusions can already be drawn about the quality of the paintwork. It turned out to be not very resistant to external influences and frankly the weak point of the Hyundai ix35. Small chips and scratches on most cars of the model can be found without difficulty. However, owners of almost all modern cars face similar problems. But doors that close with too much force are entirely the responsibility of those who assemble the Korean crossover. Fortunately, most often the problem goes away after adjusting the locks.

The interior of the Hyundai ix35 begins to squeak noticeably over time. But that's not so bad. What’s worse is that on many cars, the filler in the driver’s seat cushion begins to crumble after 30-40 thousand kilometers. All the more surprising is the fact that the Koreans change the seat cushion under warranty without any problems, but do not even try to change the filling supplier or somehow change the design of the seat. There are also complaints about the finishing of the steering wheel. It is also not very durable.

By modern standards, there is not so much electronics in the Hyundai ix35, but from time to time it makes itself felt. So, for example, a standard radio may start to “glitch” for no reason. The parking sensors on the Korean crossover are also not very durable. And the ix35 has already managed to scare some car enthusiasts with the sudden lighting of all the indicator lamps, after which the instrument panel went out for a short time. Although in this case, the official dealers of the Korean company did not try to deny the problem and replaced the dashboard under warranty.

There were three engines offered for the Hyundai ix35 sold on our market - one gasoline (2 liters, 150 horsepower) and two diesel (2 liters, 136 and 184 horsepower). Each of these power units has a chain in the gas distribution mechanism, so for most car enthusiasts so far it has all come down to periodic oil changes. And it pleases. Even though most ix35s have not yet accumulated significant mileage, we can already say that the engines installed in this model do not have any obvious design flaws or weak points.

The picture is still the same with gearboxes. Owners of the Hyundai ix35 do not complain at all about the “mechanics”, but they sometimes scold the automatic gearbox because after a long, even movement it seems to fall into a stupor and does not want to start working at the right moment. And even though this effect manifests itself spontaneously and very rarely, if desired, Hyundai dealers will reflash the electronic gearbox control unit.

The suspension is perhaps the weakest point of the Korean ix35 crossover at the moment. The original shock absorbers on the Hyundai ix35 may start knocking after 10 thousand kilometers. And with the onset of cold weather, the number of extraneous sounds only increases. However, there are also those owners who managed to drive about 60-80 thousand kilometers on the ix35, but never encountered this problem. It turns out that there is still a variation in quality during assembly and the selection of components supplied to the assembly line. Another characteristic source of noise in the suspension of a Korean crossover is the shock absorber strut bumper and boot flying off their place. On cars that were produced before 2012, dealers simply fixed the boot with sealant or electrical tape. Afterwards, the Koreans completely eliminated this design flaw.

It is too early to talk about the reliability of the steering and braking system of the Hyundai ix35. Steering rack knocks and ABS sensor failures have been recorded on some cars, but so far these are rather isolated cases. It is premature to draw any conclusions based on them.

So in general, the Hyundai ix35 is still pleasing. Even more pleasing is the fact that the Koreans do not deny the existing problems and try to quickly eliminate them. And let the Korean crossover acquire “sores” over time, but now we can safely say that in terms of reliability it will in any case be one of the leaders in the class of compact crossovers.

Hyundai ix35 / Tucson is the first Korean crossover, which is a joint development of Korean and European engineers. The design of the SUV was made in Hyundai’s new corporate style “Flowing Sculpture” at that time, thanks to which the car looks fresh and dynamic. Despite the fact that ideologically and externally the Hyundai iх35 is significantly different from its predecessor (the first generation Tucson), it is one and the same model. The predecessor of the ix35 gained a reputation as a reliable and practical car, but now we’ll try to figure out how things are with the reliability of this model and what surprises to expect from it after 5-8 years of operation.

Common problems with used Hyundai ix35 / Tucson

Weak points of the body:

paintwork– as is often the case with Asian cars, the paintwork is quite delicate and does not withstand external factors well, which is why most of the copies presented on the secondary market have minor defects – chips, scratches. If the damage is minor, then in principle you don’t have to worry, but if the soil is exposed, then it’s better not to delay repairs. On many copies, after 4-5 years of operation, all kinds of paint blistering appears on the body, most often in the area of the rear wheel arches, trunk doors, windshield pillars, the problem also occurs on the hood and roof.

Chromium– you shouldn’t be surprised at the problems with chrome parts in the exterior finishing – clouding, corrosion and peeling of shiny coatings are the norm for Korean cars that find themselves in our operating conditions.

Body iron– despite the weak paint and varnish coating, the metal firmly resists the onslaught of the red disease.

Washer reservoir– has an unfortunate location (installed close to the bumper) and is in a risk zone – it breaks even from a minor impact with the bumper, for example, on a large snowdrift. In addition, the bumper and its mount become tanned with the arrival of cold weather, because of this, in most cases, after contact with an obstacle, it is necessary to replace not only the tank, but also the bumper.

Assembly– on some domestically assembled units, closing the doors occurs with considerable effort. The reason is poor quality assembly. To fix the problem, you need to adjust the locks.

Power units and their disadvantages

Gasoline:

Motor 2.0 (G4NA / G4KD)– the power unit is equipped with a timing chain drive, which is a definite plus in terms of reliability. In general, there are no horrific statistics of breakdowns of this motor; on the whole it is reliable. Pre-restyling versions (until 2013) do not have hydraulic compensators, so valve clearances need to be adjusted every 80-100 km. On cars that are constantly driven on 92 gasoline, the valves need to be adjusted more often. If this is not done, over time the operation of the motor will be accompanied by a characteristic noise.

Increased noise– this problem is most often the result of a failure of the chain tensioner, CVVT clutch or hydraulic compensators. Even owners of cars with low mileage - up to 100,000 km - can encounter this problem.

Seizure in cylinders– can appear even on cars with low mileage (60-90 thousand km), unfortunately, the exact cause of the appearance of this disease is unknown. Symptoms - during operation of the power unit, an extraneous knock is clearly audible. Before buying, be sure to listen to how the engine works, since there is only one solution to the problem - replacing the piston. If there is no guarantee, you will also have to line the cylinder block at your own expense, and this is not a cheap pleasure, about $1000.

Spark plug are not a problem area of the engine, however, if they malfunction at low speeds (up to 2000), vibrations increase significantly, which, as a rule, frighten car owners. If vibrations are felt in the cabin after replacing the spark plugs, check the condition of the engine mounts.

Gasoline pump– often bothers with hissing sounds.

Catalysts– depending on the quality of the fuel used, they last 100-150 thousand km, after which they begin to deteriorate, while their particles (ceramic dust) enter the engine and destroy the cylinders and lubrication system. If this trouble happens, you will have to change the engine, since no flushing can completely remove such dust. To protect yourself from possible troubles, do not delay replacing catalysts.

Intake shaft phase shifter– is considered the most vulnerable point in the gas distribution mechanism. If it fails, you will have to change the phase change clutch; it is worth noting that this is not cheap.

timing belt– at a sample of 150-200 thousand km, there is a high probability of failure of the balancing shafts. If there is a malfunction, the engine begins to vibrate strongly.

Diesel– this problem most often manifests itself in the cold season, a common occurrence for this engine, which goes away after a slight warm-up.

Chirping– just like diesel is not the cause of engine malfunction (a feature of the operation of fuel injectors).

Whistling– this sound is most often the result of severe wear on the air conditioning compressor bearing.

Resource– the manufacturer states that the engine life with proper maintenance will be at least 250-300 thousand km.

Engine 2.4 G4KE / 4B12– Hyundai ix35 / Tucson with such a power unit is not a frequent visitor to the secondary market, since it was equipped only with the top version of the Limited Edition car, which was presented in a limited number in the CIS. This unit is an enlarged copy of the G4KD / 4B11 engine - the engine uses the same variable valve timing system on both shafts, there are no hydraulic compensators and the problems are the same.

Diesel:

In terms of efficiency and torque, diesel engines look preferable to gasoline engines, however, the higher cost of maintenance and the high probability of failure of expensive elements of the capricious fuel system frighten most domestic motorists. However, the only Korean-made diesel engine officially presented on our market not only has fuel equipment that presents unpleasant surprises, but let’s talk about everything in order.

Crankshaft damper pulley- is the most problematic part of this unit and often requires replacement without having served even 100,000 km. Fortunately, repairs are inexpensive - about $100. If there is a disease, there is a “whirling” sound when the engine is running.

Startup problems– appear quite early, up to 100,000 km. The main reason is the failure of the glow plug relay. Also, starting problems can be caused by oxidation of the contacts on the glow plug strip at the crimp point.

Sensor pressure boost turbines– also not known for its long service life. If it malfunctions, traction is significantly reduced, and the “Check” error appears on the instrument panel.

Filter preliminary cleaning– this filter is located in the fuel tank, and if you refuel with low-quality diesel fuel, it will have to be changed every 40-50 thousand km. If this is not done, the dynamics of acceleration will gradually deteriorate, and attempts at sudden acceleration will be accompanied by jerking of the car.

Oil pan– loses its tightness over time.

Malfunctions caused by natural wear and tear– as a rule, at a mileage of 150-200 km, replacement of injectors, dual-mass flywheel and turbine is required.

Transmission

Mechanics– the biggest disadvantage of a manual transmission is extraneous noise during operation. To be fair, it is worth noting that in most cases, to eliminate the problem, it is enough to change the oil.

Automatic transmission- “automatic”, like mechanics, does not often bother with failures, but only if it is serviced in a timely manner (oil and filter changes every 60,000 km). Among the operational features, one can note jerks during gear shifts. In some cases, the problem can be resolved by updating the transmission control unit software. Among the shortcomings of the automatic transmission, it is worth noting the unreliable connection of the oil supply pipe to the cooler. It needs to be checked periodically, as it can fly off and drain all the oil from the transmission. I think there is no need to explain what this entails. Some owners complain about the failure of the gearbox selector position sensor. If this problem occurs, do not change gears.

Four-wheel drive

The biggest disadvantage of this system is the tendency of spline joints to corrosion. The right compound drive shaft is most susceptible to the problem. The appearance of rust accelerates the process of wear of the splines (“licked”), because of this, play appears in them. There is only one solution to the problem - replacing the intermediate shaft and internal CV joint (about 300 USD). Also, due to insufficient corrosion protection, after 3-5 years of operation, the splines of the transfer case drive shaft and rear differential cup become licked off. Eliminating this disease costs an average of $1,000. Fortunately, all these troubles can be avoided if the disease is prevented in a timely manner - it is necessary to lubricate the spline joints every 30-50 thousand kilometers. If you start a problem with spline connections, over time this will lead to a break in the support bearing of the intermediate shaft, which is part of the block. Ideally, you need to change the entire block, but you can try welding it with argon welding.

In cars with a diesel engine, it is necessary to periodically check the condition of the differential basket. The fact is that this motor has a high torque, and therefore, under heavy loads, the welded seam of the basket may begin to collapse. Until 2011, the Hyundai ix35 / Tucson was equipped with a Japanese-made JTEKT clutch, after which it was replaced with the Austrian Magna Steyr. Both clutches are reliable and up to 150,000 km only bother their owners with little things. Most often, malfunctions are caused by damaged wiring. Also, it is considered common for clutch seals to leak at mileage of up to 100,000 km; it is not worth delaying the elimination of the disease, since a decrease in the level of lubrication accelerates wear of the coupling. On pre-restyling cars, the driveshaft outboard bearing was not famous for its reliability.

Weak points of the suspension, steering and brakes of the Hyundai ix35 / Tucson

Despite the fact that the Hyundai ix35 / Tucson belongs to the class of off-road vehicles, it is equipped with a short-travel suspension, which is not entirely suitable for driving on rough terrain. A feature of the vehicle's chassis is increased operating noise, especially in the cold season. Sources of extraneous knocking can be loose plastic inside the wheel arches and boots and shock absorber bumpers flying off their seats - experts recommend fixing them with sealant.

Average life of Hyundai ix35 / Tucson suspension elements:

  • Stabilizer struts - 30-50 thousand km.
  • Stabilizer bushings - 60,000 km.
  • Wheel bearings and ball joints - 100-120 thousand km.
  • Shock absorbers - 120-140 thousand km.
  • Silent blocks - up to 150,000 km.
  • Floating silent blocks of transverse arms of the rear axle - 60-70 thousand km.
  • The springs of the rear axle - even under average loads, sag by 70-80 thousand km, because of this the wear of the shock absorbers accelerates - rarely last more than 100,000 km.
  • On all-wheel drive cars, after 100,000 km, the rear arm bracket to which the stabilizer bar is attached begins to deteriorate.

Steering system:

Most often, the steering rack bothers you here - it can start knocking quite early (after 50,000 km). The main reason is the wear of the plastic bushings, however, on some specimens, in addition to the bushings, the rack gears also had to be changed. Steering consumables last quite a long time, tips - 90-110 thousand km, rods - 130-150 thousand km.

Brakes:

In the brake system, problems can be caused by the brake pedal limiter. The problem is unpleasant because if it is present, the automatic transmission and the car’s keyless start system stop working.

Interior and electrical equipment

Salon– like most Korean cars, the interior of the Hyundai ix35 / Tucson is not particularly pleasing with the quality of finishing materials – everything is done simply, but tastefully. The first trouble that owners of the Hyundai ix35 / Tucson encounter is the abundance of all kinds of knocks and creaks in the cold season; in fairness, it is worth noting that after a slight warm-up, the cabin becomes quiet. Most often, extraneous sounds come from under the armrest and door trim. Another disadvantage is that the quality of the leather on the seats is not the best - it rubs, cracks, comes apart at the seams, etc. after 40-50 thousand km. The same can be said about the steering wheel braid. The seat filling is not without flaws - after several years of use it begins to crumble (the problem is relevant for pre-restyling versions of cars).

Electronics– there are a number of complaints about the electrical equipment of the cabin, for example, often before 100,000 km the electric motor of the heater begins to make noise. To fix the problem, you need to clean and lubricate the motor. After 3-4 years of operation, parking sensors and a rear view camera begin to fail due to oxidized contacts. The instrument panel can begin to take on a life of its own - “glitches” appear in the form of random switching off of devices or simultaneous turning on of all indicator lights. There is only one solution - replacing the tidy. Owners often complain that the audio system does not work correctly (freezes).

What's the result?

After reading this article, you may get the impression that the Hyundai ix35 / Tucson has a large number of shortcomings and problem areas, but in fact this is not the case. Most of these problems are probable, but it is not a fact that all of them will occur en masse on the same car. And those “jambs” that are quite often found on this car are eliminated with little means. To summarize the above, I can say that this is an excellent option for second-hand purchase - inexpensive, simple, understandable and cheap to operate.

Weaknesses and disadvantages of the Hyundai ix35 (Tussan/Tucson) with mileage. Problems with automatic transmission Hyundai ix35

Kia Sportage and Hyundai ix35 – Weaknesses, breakdowns, problems

This time, in order to avoid writing about the same thing twice, we decided to combine the problems of “technical twins” into one article. And today our review of used cars is dedicated to the weak points of the Hyundai ix35 and Kia Sportage.

As you already understood, these two brothers not only sit on the same platform, but consist of the same units and materials, and are assembled by almost the same hands. Therefore, if you do not take into account the slight difference in the chassis settings, the owner of the Sportage complains about the same thing that the owner of the ix35 does not like in his car.

G4KD – love and hate

And most of all, these two both love and at the same time hate the 2.0-liter G4KD gasoline engine, which can easily run twice as long as the 250 thousand km declared by the manufacturer, and may need to be replaced with a piston engine after 70-80 thousand km. We have already come across G4KD with engine knocking while inspecting a used Kia Sportage car. Moreover, by all indications, the car was relatively new, but the seller suddenly decided to sell his car, which was no longer under warranty at that time. So, listen carefully.

Scratched cylinder mirrors G4KD

A two-fold reduction in service intervals and reasonable warming up of a “cold” engine before driving will help significantly delay scratching of the cylinder bore by piston rings. Another important factor is driving style. Believe it or not, ix35 owners are much less likely to report a knocking engine to the dealer. Kia owners, maybe you misunderstood the Sportage lettering on the trunk lid? Don't think that you have a chance to become a leader in the flow.

Although, you know, you can still stand out among other similar Sportages. The G4KD engine, strangled for the sake of taxes and “economy” regulations, responds to chip tuning with a noticeable increase in power. Unfortunately, reflashing will not increase the service life of the engine, but it will easily put an additional load on the piston group.

Diesels are rare, but you shouldn't be particularly afraid of them

The only weak point in the gas distribution mechanism was the phase shifter on the intake shaft. The problem is rare, but unpleasant, since replacing the phase change clutch is expensive. It is much more profitable to fork out for good oil and replace it in a timely manner, and do not be lazy to adjust the valve clearances every 100 thousand km.

Is it worth taking a diesel?

Diesel ix35 and Sportage are rare for obvious reasons. The high starting cost may seem indecent at first, but if you are buying a car for a long time and you are going to drive it a lot, then in the end you can save a lot on fuel and maintenance. Although a diesel engine requires “special” service, in the case of the ix35 and Sportage, intervention in the technical part will be required infrequently. The most well-known problem is the “chattering” of the crankshaft pulley, which is treated by replacing it, which, in principle, is trivial and at the same time inexpensive. Other weak points are related to the operational features of all diesel engines - long warm-up times, sensitivity to the quality of diesel fuel, etc.

New automatic transmission selector sensor ix35

The “automatic” of these two models, apart from periodic oil changes, usually does not ask for anything. Small jerks when changing gears, especially in early runs, are treated by dealers by flashing the ECU. Failures of the gearbox switch position sensor are slightly less common. You will learn about this malfunction only when the car refuses to change the operating modes of the transmission, asking to be taken to the “back” of the tow truck.

You won't get any problems from the mechanics. Only frequent long trips in a coupe with a refusal to periodically change the oil in the unit can ruin the box.

Dirt - to climb or not to climb

Right front-wheel drive is a sore subject. Don't forget to lubricate it periodically

Most of all, crossovers from Kia and Hyundai are afraid of dirt, because they are not tanks, but just all-wheel drive “passenger cars” with high ground clearance. And first of all, the drive of the right front wheel, together with the intermediate shaft, its bearing and the differential spline, suffers from the influences of the external environment. If you do not periodically inspect and lubricate the rubbing elements, then knocks from this area will lead you to a car service for an expensive replacement of one or more parts from the list. It is worth recognizing that this is the most pronounced design oversight of the developers, which can lead to the drive falling out of its connection.

When choosing a used Sportage (ix35) younger than 2011, be sure to check the rear-wheel drive clutch control unit for errors. DTCs with values of 1822 and 1830 indicate a failure of the clutch hydraulic pump, which again occurs due to the passage of dirt through the boot, or due to oxidized contacts.

The all-wheel drive clutch is practically irreparable, and the price of a new unit is very high

On older machines there were no such problems at all, since the device was driven exclusively by an electric motor without a hydraulic pump. The abandonment of the previous design was caused by too frequent overheating of the clutch pack during short runs on muddy roads. Even now, the all-wheel drive ix35 (Sportage) is more of an easy assistant in snow-covered city yards than a reliable companion in forest forays. Off-road driving, due to the absolute inability of the car, can be very expensive.

"Healthy" knocks

The fact that this is more of a passenger car is also indicated by the steering rack, which is sparingly protected from moisture getting into the body. Several deep fords and washed out lubricant will leave the unit face to face with the merciless force of friction, leaving it no chance to survive until the “deadline” of the tips. But they usually don’t run less than 100 thousand km, unless, of course, you count cases of defects on cars from the first years of production.

The weak point of the ix35 is the rear springs. Sportage does not suffer from sagging disease

In the chassis, the first problems arise no earlier than 60-70 thousand km. This is the approximate lifespan of the stabilizer struts. It happens that strange sounds begin to bother you even earlier, but resorting to premature repairs is pointless; the reliability of the ix35 (Sportage) suspension allows you to drive more than 120 thousand km without replacing critical parts. The most common cause of knocking is the shock absorber bumpers sliding down the rod. And all that needs to be done is to secure them at the very top using any, even collective farm, method.

Due to its design, even a perfectly serviceable suspension can produce extra noise. For peace of mind, it is better to visit a trusted service for diagnostics, and if you are told that everything is in order, then, most likely, everything is so.

The chassis settings of these models, albeit slightly, are different. In the “softer” Hyundai ix35, by 100 thousand km the rear springs can sag quite a bit, which are immediately replaced with non-original reinforced ones. Not the least role in this was played by the fact that this model is often preferred by family people who go south once a year in full force.

The panel plastic of the ix35/Sportage is delicate. It becomes especially fragile in cold weather

It is better not to overload either the ix35 or the Sportage; neither the suspension nor the body, which is far from off-road in its rigidity, will appreciate this. Sometimes waves of asphalt make its connections “moan,” and when you stop with one wheel on a high curb, sometimes the doors noticeably warp.

And some other little things

There is no need to worry too much about the hardware itself. The metal will not corrode, even if the paintwork is damaged by deep chips. But small scratches on the varnish appear quickly, as, indeed, on most modern cars with “environmentally friendly” paint.

The interior of the ix35 and Sportage, due to the “budget” nature of the materials used, is not able to maintain its original appearance for a long time. The plastic of the panel elements is easily scratched, and air duct deflectors sometimes break just from a harmless attempt to direct the flow in the cold. “Crickets” will definitely periodically create a campaign for you. The weakest point of the interior is the front seats, the leatherette on the sides of which constantly bursts, and the seat filling steadily crumbles with use, no matter how much you weigh.

The materials of the front seats of the models are too cheap. Leatherette breaks, the fabric gets dirty easily, foam rubber spills out

In terms of electronics, the most common complaints from ix35 and Sportage owners relate to the rear driving assistants. If dealers carried out free replacement of parking sensors, then car enthusiasts already dealt with the restoration of oxidized contacts of the rear view camera themselves, fortunately there was nothing complicated in this procedure.

Another little thing with potentially dangerous consequences was the failure of the button (limit switch) for turning on the brake lights on the brake pedal. Owners of cars with an automatic transmission will simply not be able to go anywhere in the event of a breakdown. Drivers who prefer to “pull the handle” are less fortunate, because driving with unlit “stops” greatly increases the risk of catching a naive “stray” who missed the car’s deceleration.

Should I buy ix35 or Sportage?

Buying a used ix35 or Sportage, albeit with caution, is possible. At the same time, a mileage of 100 thousand km should not be an obstacle for you. The main thing is to make sure that the G4KD motor does not make a characteristic piston knock and check the serviceability of the electromagnetic clutch. If everything is in order with the body and major suspension repairs are not required, then everything else can be put in order relatively inexpensively. Moreover, the prices for spare parts are completely humane, and the simplicity of the design of these crossovers allows them to be serviced in almost any legal service center.

When purchasing a relatively “fresh” used ix35 or Sportage, do not take into account the manufacturer’s 5-year warranty, or at least read the impressive list of limitations. Car salesmen will certainly caress your ears with the phrase: “What are you afraid of? It’s under warranty!” Remember that no one except the dealer will tell you for sure whether it is under warranty or not.

Location of VIN and engine number

Foreign-assembled car bodies (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Korea) are marked in two places that are easily accessible to the eye - on the crossbar under the front passenger seat and under the windshield. Additional stickers with the number are located in the doorways. The Russian SKD Sportage is also numbered with an “Avtotor” plate on the right center pillar and the right front side member near the engine mount. Finding and reading the VIN will not be difficult, but to find the engine number you will have to get a mirror, a flashlight and direct your gaze to the left side of the unit, approximately under the antifreeze filler neck.

Competitors ix35 and Sportage

Alternative options are a dime a dozen in the compact crossover market. You can choose among the regulars in this segment: Toyota Rav4, Nissan Qashqai, Honda CR-V, or take a closer look at the Ford Kuga, Mitsibishi ASX, Mazda CX-5, Skoda Yeti and Volkswagen Tiguan of the first generations. The Chinese are also trying to keep up with trends, but so far they are only providing the market with front-wheel drive SUVs that are cheap in price and content.

Weaknesses and disadvantages of a used Hyundai ix35 /Hyundai ix35/

Hyundai ix35 (Tussan/Tucson) is a compact crossover from the Korean company Hyundai. The popularity of crossovers in the modern world is simply off the charts, and this model is not only one of the most prominent representatives of this class, but also for a long time was one of the three most popular crossovers in the CIS, Europe and Asia. Today, just like 7 years ago, there are a lot of people who want to buy a Hyundai ix35, however, it’s unlikely to be possible to buy this car new (it’s out of production), but on the secondary market the offers make your head spin. Therefore, today I decided to talk about the most common problems with this popular model and what you should pay attention to when choosing a used Hyundai ix35 (Tussan).

A little history:

The Hyundai ix35 debuted in 2009 at the Frankfurt auto show; serial production of the model was launched in 2010 at factories in South Korea, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and China. By and large, it was not a new model, but the second generation of the popular Hyundai Tussan crossover in the CIS, which premiered in 2004. This was confirmed by the fact that in the American and Korean markets the new product retained its previous name (Tussan). Compared to its predecessor, the ix35 is equipped with more powerful and economical engines, the security system has also been improved, but in terms of dimensions the new product is not much different from the first generation. Like the Tussan, the ix35 was designed on a common platform with the Kia Sportage model. Based on the Hyundai ix35, the Chinese company JAC Motors created the JAC S5 model.

In 2013, the car underwent the first restyling, which resulted in a modified design of wheel rims and optics - a bi-xenon with daytime running lights diodes was installed in front, a new two-liter gasoline engine with direct fuel injection (for many CIS countries - distributed injection) appeared. Changes also affected the interior, including a system that allows you to change the degree of effort on the steering wheel Flex Steer, a heated steering wheel and an electronic instrument panel with a diagonal of 4.2 inches. Production of the Hyundai ix35 crossover ended in 2015. In March of the same year, the third generation of the car was presented at the Geneva auto show, which was returned to its previous name - Hyundai Tussan. Sales of the new car in the CIS started in November 2015

Weaknesses of Hyundai ix35 (Tussan) with mileage

The paintwork of the body turned out to be not very resistant to external influences and is considered to be a frankly weak point of this model. Small chips and scratches occur even from weak mechanical impact, so finding a reason for minimal bargaining will not be difficult. However, owners of almost all modern cars face similar problems. On models used in metropolitan areas, the paint on the hood, roof, rear wheel arches, trunk door and windshield pillars may begin to swell. Fortunately, dealers recognize this defect as a manufacturing defect (reluctantly) and fix it under warranty. As for the corrosion resistance of the body, there are no comments so far, which means that the car is protected from the red disease.

The disadvantages include the poor location of the windshield washer fluid reservoir. The fact is that it is located very close to the front bumper (on the right side) and in the event of a minor accident or a collision with a large snowdrift, in addition to restoring the bumper, the tank will also have to be replaced (it cracks). Some owners complain that significant force is required to close the doors. This drawback is the merit of the people who assemble the Korean crossover. In most cases, the problem is solved by adjusting the locks.

Disadvantages of power units

The Hyundai ix35 is presented on the domestic market with gasoline engines - 2.0 (150 hp from 2003 164 hp) and 2.4 (177 hp) - installed in Europe and on the top version of the Limited Edition, as well as diesel CRDi 2.0 (136 and 184 hp). Petrol 1.6 (138 hp) and diesel CRDi 1.7 (116 hp) were also available on the European market. The two-liter G4KD gasoline engine is quite reliable, and it can also run on 92-octane gasoline without any problems. But in this case, you have to adjust the valve clearances more often (every 90 thousand km), since it does not have hydraulic compensators (only on pre-restyling versions of the car). The presence of characteristic noises will indicate the need for this procedure. Common disadvantages of this engine include malfunctions of the hydraulic chain tensioner, CVVT coupling and hydraulic compensators (on cars since 2013). Troubles with them can begin quite early (after 50,000 km), the symptoms are increased noise.

The most serious problem is the appearance of scuffing in the cylinders (they can appear after 70-80 thousand km), because of this it is necessary to change the piston. A signal that you need to visit a service center will be an extraneous knock that appears while the engine is running. If the warranty has expired, then the cylinder block will have to be lined - 1000-1500 cu. So listen carefully before purchasing. In the cold season, the diesel engine does not warm up at least a little, this is a common thing for this engine, which dealers call its feature. Also, “chirping”, a feature of the operation of fuel injectors, is considered normal. When a whistle appears, pay attention to the condition of the air conditioning compressor bearing; most likely it is worn out and requires replacement. If the spark plugs are faulty, at low engine speeds (1000-1200) increased vibrations are felt. Although the engine itself is not the quietest, you need to be prepared for the appearance of various sounds, for example, the gas pump may begin to make various hissing sounds over time.

On cars with a mileage of 100,000+ km, it is necessary to monitor the condition of the catalyst; the fact is that when it is destroyed, its particles get into the cylinders and form scuffs there. Catalyst service life is 100-150 thousand km. The only weak point in the gas distribution mechanism was the phase shifter on the intake shaft. The problem is rare, but unpleasant, since replacing the phase change clutch will not be cheap. At the same mileage, there is a high probability of failure of the timing balancer shafts. The disease is accompanied by increased vibration during engine operation. With proper maintenance, the engine will last 250-300 thousand km without problems. More powerful power unit G4KE / 4B12 - volume 2.4 liters. Structurally similar to the G4KD engine - it uses the same variable valve timing system on both shafts, no hydraulic compensators, and has identical disadvantages.

Diesel engines

Solar engines attract buyers with their fuel efficiency, for example, the weakest unit paired with a “mechanics” consumes on average just under 7 liters per 100 km and has better torque. In diesel power units, the weak point is the crankshaft damper pulley; as a rule, it becomes unusable after a mileage of 50-100 thousand km (a “chirping” sound appears). Replacement will be relatively inexpensive - about 100 bucks. The glow plug relay is also considered problematic - if it fails, the engine stops starting and the turbine boost pressure sensor - if it malfunctions, a “check engine” error appears on the instrument panel and power is lost.

Problematic engine starting in the cold season may be due to poor contact due to oxidation of the wiring on the glow plug strip at the crimp point. When using low-quality diesel fuel, the pre-cleaning filter located in the fuel tank quickly becomes clogged (after 30-50 thousand km). The problem is accompanied by deterioration in dynamics and twitching during acceleration. After 150-200 thousand km you need to be prepared to replace the turbocharger, fuel injectors and dual-mass flywheel. None of these options will be cheap. Minor ailments include loss of tightness of the oil pan gasket. Other possible troubles can be attributed to the operational features of all diesel engines - long warm-up times, sensitivity to the quality of diesel fuel, etc.

Transmission

The Hyundai ix35 (Tussan) was equipped with one of two types of gearboxes of its own production - 5 and 6-speed manual, as well as a 6-speed automatic. Any of the transmissions, with proper maintenance (oil change every 60,000 km), will delight you with an impressive mileage and a small number of problems. One of these is the noise of a manual transmission, which in most cases can be eliminated by changing the oil. In automatic transmissions, minor jerks when changing gears can be annoying. The problem can be treated by flashing the transmission control unit. Rarely, but still, there are cases of failure of the gearbox switch position sensor. With this malfunction, it is not possible to change the position of the box switch. On cars of the first years of production, the oil supply pipe to the oil cooler may not hold well - it may fall off (fraught with oil leakage).

Four-wheel drive

In all-wheel drive versions of the car, when slipping, the rear wheels are connected using an electronic center clutch. There is also a forced locking of the clutch using the “Lock” button located on the front panel - when the lock is turned on, the torque will be distributed between the axles 50:50. If you move at a speed above 30 km per hour, the forced locking is switched off and the clutch operates in automatic mode. As for the reliability of this system, owners may be in for a couple of unpleasant surprises. Over time, pockets of corrosion appear on the spline joints, which significantly accelerate wear - the connection of the right composite drive shaft suffers the most. As a result, the splines are licked, causing backlash and hum. To fix the problem, you will have to replace the intermediate shaft and the inner CV joint (200-250 cu). If the problem is not corrected in a timely manner, the intermediate shaft bearing mount may break off.

After 100-150 thousand kilometers, corrosion may begin to affect the drive shaft splines in the transfer case and differential cup. In this case, the repair will cost 1000 USD. To avoid the above troubles with an all-wheel drive transmission, it is recommended to carry out preventative maintenance once every 30-40 thousand km - lubrication of spline joints. In cars with diesel engines, due to the greater torque, under heavy loads the differential basket along the weld may begin to collapse. Two types of couplings were used on the car - JTEKT (Japan) was installed on the car until 2011, after Magna Steyr (Austria). Up to 100,000 km there are no serious complaints about their performance; later failures may appear due to damage to the wiring insulation and wear of the electric motor brushes.

Also, over time, the clutch seal begins to leak, and if you ignore the problem for a long time, you will have to repair the clutch. For cars manufactured before 2011, the outboard bearing of the driveshaft is considered a weak point (replacement may be required after 50,000 km); for later models, the service life is 120-150 thousand km. The problem manifests itself as a hum while driving.

Disadvantages of the used Hyundai ix35 (Tussan) chassis

The Hyundai ix35 has a moderately stiff and compact suspension, which provides the crossover with a good level of handling at high speeds. But outside of smooth roads, due to the short suspension travel, there is noticeable shaking in the cabin, which reduces ride comfort. But such a drawback can be forgiven, since the car is a typical SUV and is more designed for driving on the highway rather than off it. An independent suspension with anti-roll bars is used on both axles: MacPherson strut at the front, multi-link at the rear. Extraneous noise when driving over bumps is a feature of the suspension and worsens with the arrival of cold weather. Often the noise is caused by loose plastic inside the wheel arches and other elements. Another source of knocking can be the boots and bump stops of shock absorbers - they fly off their seat (relevant for cars manufactured before 2012).

As for the shortcomings of the suspension, first of all I would like to note the short resource of the floating silent blocks of the transverse arms of the rear suspension; it is often necessary to change it at a mileage of 60-70 thousand km. The stabilizer struts last a little less - 40-50 thousand km. Also, the rear springs are not famous for their long service life - they sag, and the shock absorbers - they last up to 80-100 thousand km. Other elements of the rear suspension can last up to 150,000 km. In the front suspension, before 100,000 km, only the strut and stabilizer bushing require replacement - they last up to 60,000 km. Ball joints and wheel bearings last an average of 100-120 km, shock absorbers, support bearings and silent blocks last up to 150,000 km. For vehicles with all-wheel drive, by 100,000 km, the rear arm bracket to which the stabilizer strut is attached may begin to deteriorate.

On cars equipped with a tire pressure sensor, tire replacement or repairs must be carried out very carefully, since often inexperienced technicians break off the spool (it has a pressure sensor installed), which is why they had to buy a new part, which is not cheap. There are also complaints about the reliability of the steering, equipped with an electric booster. As a rule, by 80-100 thousand km the bushings wear out - if there is a problem, a knock appears while driving on an uneven road. On some specimens, the rack gears wore out during the same run. Steering ends run 70-100 thousand km, traction up to 150,000 km. There may also be problems with the brake system; some owners complain about premature failure of the brake pedal limit switch. If the car is equipped with a keyless start system, if such a problem exists, the engine will not be able to start, and the automatic transmission will also not work.

Interior and electronics

The quality of the interior finishing materials is quite low-cost, because of this you should not count on good wear resistance - the plastic elements of the panel are easily scratched, and air duct deflectors sometimes break just from a harmless attempt to change the flow in a cold car. You shouldn’t count on good acoustic comfort either - at first the whistling of the stove fan begins to bother you (cleaning and additional lubrication of the motor solves the problem). Then the “crickets” from the armrest, and then the center console with the glove compartment and the trunk lid trim are connected to the symphony. The problem can be solved by gluing the Shumka, but do not use excessive force so as not to break the plastic fasteners.

We cannot ignore the front seats, which by 100,000 km, in addition to having many defects in the upholstery (leatherette cracks), also lose their shape (the filler of the driver's seat cushion is crumbling). As for the reliability of electronics, not everything is so smooth here either. After several winters, the rear view camera fails. The reason is that the contacts (connectors) on the microcircuit are oxidized. For the same reason, standard parking sensors also fail. Rarely, but still, malfunctions in the operation of the standard radio occur. In some specimens, in the first years of life, the warning lamps spontaneously lit up, followed by a short-term shutdown of the instrument panel. When contacting the dealer, the “tidy” was replaced under warranty.

Result:

Despite the impressive list of possible problems, the Hyundai ix35 (Tussan) cannot be called unreliable, since all these problems are unlikely to befall the same car en masse. But whether it’s worth buying this car on the secondary market is up to you to decide. But don’t forget that when choosing this model, you need to take into account many factors, especially if you want to purchase an all-wheel drive version, because, for example, a faulty clutch can result in a very expensive repair.

Advantages:

  • Availability of all-wheel drive.
  • Original design.
  • Quite comfortable fit.

Flaws:

  • Low quality finishing materials.
  • Weak paintwork.
  • Some all-wheel drive components are prone to corrosion.

If you are the owner of this car model, please describe the problems that you encountered while using the car. Perhaps your review will help the readers of our site when choosing a car.

disadvantages of the model and problems during operation

The Hyundai AX35 receives mostly positive reviews. This is a reliable and comfortable Korean car, which is an intermediate link between expensive high-class cars and budget SUVs and crossovers. Based on reviews from the owners of these cars, you can determine the advantages, disadvantages of the car, and the features of its operation.

Design

The Hyundai AX35 looks amazing. Owner reviews confirm this. The car has a modern, stylish youth crossover design, although it is positioned on the market as an SUV. The car has all the necessary qualities of an SUV.

As for the interior, everything here is also done at the highest level: a lot of space in the cabin, expensive high-quality plastic, a futuristic panel. But design is a subjective matter. Many potential buyers do not like the new Hyundai AX35; they also write negative reviews about it, but only in the context of design.

As for the interior, everything is fine with it. The stove warms it up in 5 minutes. There are no creaks in the cabin, the trim fits firmly, the plastic does not bend anywhere. There are also drawbacks in the interior: the rear seats do not fold down well, so it will not be possible to significantly increase the trunk volume. So lovers of fishing and outdoor recreation will not be able to get a good night’s sleep in the car.

Body

Koreans usually make pretty good bodies, but this car has large gaps between elements. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with this, but it still doesn’t inspire confidence. There are also customer complaints about the trunk door, which closes very loudly, and not the first time.

The trunk here is small, despite the fact that it is an SUV. Unfortunately, the wheel arches eat up a lot of space.

Suspension

If you believe the reviews of the Hyundai AX35, then the suspension in this car is very stiff and explosive. When driving on an uneven road, you constantly hear some knocking noises from behind, although the car service always says that everything is fine. On the other hand, the suspension here is very strong and well-knit. Thanks to it, the car can carry quite a heavy load, the car confidently handles the road, even not asphalt. Within four years of operation of the car, only the front struts from the suspension require replacement. Considering that these are just “consumables”, there is nothing wrong with this - this is the norm.

Engine and fuel consumption

Most often, these cars are equipped with two-liter naturally aspirated engines. Judging by the reviews, the Hyundai AX35 is unpretentious to the quality of gasoline and works equally well on AI-92 and AI-95 fuel, but it is better to fill it with gasoline with a higher octane number. In the city, the engine power is more than enough, but with a load the car becomes sharply dull, and the dynamics are greatly reduced. This also applies to driving on the highway.

Fuel consumption in quiet city driving mode is 10 liters, which is an excellent indicator considering the dimensions of the car and the fairly powerful two-liter engine. In winter, fuel consumption in the city increases to 13 liters. On the highway, the car consumes 8 liters per hundred when driving at a speed of 90 km/h.

According to reviews, the Hyundai AX35 diesel engine does not have the same problems that a gasoline engine has. When using diesel fuel, the car consumes less fuel, is more dynamic, and when the trunk is loaded, even if it loses dynamics, it is not as significant as in the case of a gasoline engine.

Separately, it is worth mentioning winter operation. Even at very low temperatures, the car starts with a half turn of the starter. But at the same time the engine makes unnatural noise. Most drivers did not believe that the car used a gasoline engine; they believed that there was a diesel engine inside. Be that as it may, there are no problems with the engine, even in winter. So, according to reviews from car owners, the Hyundai AX35 is an excellent car for Russia, where high negative temperatures in winter are the norm.

Flaws

Any car has certain disadvantages. Judging by the reviews, the 2014 Hyundai AX35 has the following:

The plastic in the interior is easily scratched and dirty.

Knock of shock absorbers when driving on uneven roads or bumps.

After 45,000 kilometers, some drivers notice swelling of the paint on the passenger and driver's doors, below the glazing. This gives reason to doubt the effectiveness of the anti-corrosion coating of the body.

The windshield doesn't inspire confidence either. Cracks can occur from the slightest pebble. Therefore, you should drive very carefully on a gravel road, because this is where there are many small stones that can easily bounce into the windshield.

The car is poorly adapted for driving in large traffic. That is, when driving in traffic, you often have to catch up with the car in front, and to do this you need to drop one or two gears down. Because of this, fuel consumption in the city increases significantly. There is no gear in the car in which you can comfortably drive slowly and effectively accelerate when necessary. So, according to reviews, the Hyundai AX35 mechanics are poorly suited for city driving. But fuel consumption with an automatic transmission will be even higher when driving slowly.

There is no interior transformation. We have already written about this above. Therefore, you cannot sleep in the car, and it is very difficult to transport large cargo such as interior doors. The doors will rest on the dashboard. Considering the easily scratched plastic, this is unacceptable.

There are reviews from owners about high beam bulbs burning out. A similar deficiency appears in some drivers during the first year of work.

It can also be noted as a disadvantage that the car is insufficiently adapted to the weather conditions of Russian regions. Many service stations, for money, recommend treating the wires under the hood with special water-repellent silicone agents, which will eliminate electrical problems when operating the car in conditions of constantly high humidity. It is also recommended to treat the suspension bolts and lubricate them against corrosion. Each bolt is pulled out, processed, and put back. Some car owners install a protective mesh on the air conditioner radiator grille, since when moving quickly, a small pebble can damage the grille. All these services at the service station are paid, but you can refuse them.

Exploitation

The machine is convenient and unpretentious to use. It is distinguished by a high seating position, convenient parking, and a comfortable interior, but the car is not suitable for transporting large cargo. The disadvantages of driving in the city have already been described above. As for driving on the highways, in rare cases the car lacks dynamics when overtaking, but this is not so important here. There are no shortcomings or operational problems: the interior is quiet (except for the knocking of the pillars) and comfortable, the cruise control is pleasing, everything works smoothly.

Conclusion

The Hyundai IX35 cannot be called the most successful car among all the models developed by the Korean auto industry. As expected, it has its problems and advantages. However, with its low cost, the car stands out among its competitors: Honda SR-V, Volkswagen Tiguan, Mazda CX-7, Peugeot 4007, Toyota RAV-4, Chevrolet Captiva, Skoda Yeti ", etc. Compared to them, the Hyundai IX35 looks more attractive, has a larger range of options and a lower price. For this reason, this car is popular on the Russian market and mostly collects positive reviews.

How to choose a used Hyundai ix35 (2010-2015) and is it worth buying?
