Replacing the ignition castle with your own hands (photo, video)

Ignition Castle - a small device, but very important. With it, we apply a signal to the action to your car - run or stop the engine, and also turn on the power supply of the instruments. In addition to starting the engine, the ignition lock has another important function - blocking the steering, that is, in fact, is an anti-theft device. Remove the key, slightly turn the steering wheel, and you will see that the steering shaft is instantly blocked. Accordingly, this device should work immaculately, otherwise each of us can get into the situation when the ignition lock is necessary. This element of the automotive system is very important.

Something went wrong…

If the problem came

How to be if something is wrong with the ignition lock? Without effort, the key does not turn, or does it generally encourage? It is clear that the larva of the castle is damaged, and on such a car will not leave. This may happen for various reasons: the larva came across marriage, or with time, dust and dirt just got stuck in it. In this case, you can try to replace the larva.

Little malfunction can entail big problems

If the key is still rotated, but the ignition system does not react - the contact group has explicitly failed. Of course, you can replace it, but in this case there is a risk of facing the purchase of not too high-quality spare parts. It will not save from the problem, but only temporarily postpone her decision.

And if you simply have lost the key, did you have the only one? Or another, a very unpleasant situation: an attempt was made by the hijacking of your car (God forbid, of course!), And the ignition castle is completely spoiled.

Replacing the ignition castle

To solve all these problems, the easiest way out is to replace the ignition castle. Many motorists are not in a hurry to immediately contact the car service workshop, and try to repair your favorite brainchild. Is it possible to replace the castle yourself without possessing special abilities and skills? Yes, it is quite possible, and under the power of any real man.

So, depending on the cause of the fault, the replacement may be:

  • Replace the castle completely
  • Replace the castle larvae
  • Replace the contact group.

Check the serviceability of the contact group can be without removing the ignition lock. To do this, you will be suitable for a multimeter, an emblem or any other device for wire transm. Contact resistance should be zero, otherwise they are faulty. And then it is necessary to replace the contact group of the ignition lock.

Dismantling of the castle

To partly or completely replace the ignition lock, you need to remove it. To do this, we may need a minimum set of tools.

A set of necessary tools

The ignition lock on all classic VAZ car models is downstairs on the left on the steering column. So, our actions:

Turn off the battery to de-energize the ignition lock.

Disabling the battery

We unscrew the screws of the fastening of plastic housing and remove it. We unscrew a pair of screws that the ignition lock is attached to the bracket.

Turn off the anti-theft device. To do this, insert the key and turn it into the zero position. With the help of sewn click on the retainer and get the lock.

In the "classics" models (2101-2107), the connection of the wires to the ignition lock occurs not with the help of solid chips, and each separately. Therefore, before removing the lock, during the disconnection of its contact group, it is desirable to mark the correspondence of each wire of the contact number to which it connects. Otherwise, you can confuse them when you will install the lock in place.

We disassemble the castle itself

When the castle is in your hands, you can replace its faulty part or replace it with another good ignition lock. In case of replacing the contact part, you will need to find a locking ring - it is located at the bottom of the lock - and remove it (you can make it a seboard or thin screwdriver). Then, after installing a good part, return to the place. Before installing the freelance ignition lock, we turn the key inserted into it to the "I" position to the latch, which blocks the steering shaft, is pulled into the lock case.

The structure of the ignition castle

It is done. Now, using previously labeled markers, we attach a new contact part of the castle in the same way that the previous one was attached.

We twist the locking screws of the castle, fixing it, install the decorative casing in place - and dismantling is over! Now you can turn on the engine in order to make sure that all contacts are active, and the work has been successful.

Later Vase Models

If we consider the later models of the VAZ, then they have the ignition lock on the right side of the steering column using a brackets sandwiched with fastener bolts. The most difficult lock in the dismantling is to unscrew the bolts that are made specifically in such a way to complicate the task of removing the lock, thereby reducing the probability of hacking. To overcome this complexity, it is recommended to use chisel and pliers. With the help of a chisel, we gently weaken the screed of the bolts, while trying not to damage their heads.

Chisel weakening the bolts

Then we unscrew them with pliers. When all four bolts are unscrewed, remove the clamp and, accordingly, the castle. The renovated or replaced lock is attached back to four bolts with tear-off heads, which are disposable, in order to avoid unauthorized hacking.

Also, difficulties may arise if you have an immobilizer (anti-theft device, which is equipped with new VAZ cars). This problem is mainly electrical part, therefore, it may be necessary to use the auto electrician using it, which will help you recode the immobilizer. If it is disabled, and an ordinary signaling system is installed on the machine, then there should be no difficulties in the dismantling process.

If, upon completion of all actions to replace the castle, you could not start the car, or the car was started and stood, it means that a mistake was made in the process that you can fix themselves or seek help from specialists. Some bellows and patience - and minor repairs can be done with their own hands. Good luck.
