Replacing all engine mountings with a VAZ 2110

The pillow is one of the support elements that performs the function of attaching the engine to the body of your car. This is a rubber-metal product consisting of a steel body and a thick rubber cushion.

The main function of the engine mountings is to damp vibrations that come from the engine.

Design features

If you have a "dozen" with an 8-valve engine, then the design provides for two side and one rear support;

The 16 valve engine has two side supports, one lower and one upper.

It is important to note that 8 valve engines have a rear engine mount on the top ten, while 16 valve engines do not. But such motors can boast of the presence of additional supports.

Regardless of the design, the replacement procedure is carried out in a similar way.

Malfunctions

In fact, it is quite easy to detect failed airbags, since engine vibrations will immediately increase.

If the power unit is operating normally, but the body shakes at the same time, vibration is felt on the steering rack, pedals, dashboard, then there is no doubt that the engine mountings are worn out.

The peak of vibration occurs when the motor is started and when it is turned off. If the rubber elements are completely worn out, then a knock will begin to appear. It is caused by the contact of the engine elements with the supports.

To make sure the pillows are worn, turn on the engine, raise the hood, visually inspect the supports and pillows. By placing your hand on the engine, you will feel an increase in vibrations tactilely compared to normal vehicle behavior.

There can be several reasons for the problem.

Rubber does not have a large margin of safety, therefore, over time, it ages. This effect is enhanced when exposed to temperature extremes.

Is replacement required

If you find that the back or any other pillow has begun to wear out, in no case should you pull with repair measures.

In addition to the discomfort of the driver and passengers when the car is moving, you run the risk of holding out the breakdown until the destructive processes of the gearbox and power unit begin.

When starting to repair the motor mounts, you should think about whether it is worth changing the pillows separately, or replacing the complete mounts.

If the support is not damaged, it is not necessary to replace it. That is, in such situations, it is enough to simply replace the pillow. A set of new pillows for the VAZ 2110 costs about 1.3 thousand rubles today. A set of supports will cost you 2.5 thousand rubles.

Doing the work yourself or contacting a service station is your choice. But you should know that you will be charged at least 300 rubles for replacing one pillow.

Functional check

To check, you need to do the following operations:

  • Place the car on props;
  • Place a jack under the oil pan with a block or board;
  • Raise the engine until the pillows take off the weight of the engine;
  • Check pillows;
  • Inspect them for cracks;
  • Check if they peel off easily from the metal backing;
  • Whether the original hardness of the material has been preserved, or has it become too elastic;
  • If no visual defects are found, check the backlash between the plates and the frame;
  • Treat the pillows with protective compounds, put the engine back in place;
  • Sometimes, to restore the normal performance of the supports with pillows, it is enough to tighten the fastening nuts.

If the check showed that the pillows have already worked their way, then the only correct solution would be to replace them. These elements cannot be restored.

Replacement

The replacement procedure should not cause great difficulties for those who have more than once independently engaged in repairs of their car, especially the suspension, chassis.

Replacement has its own nuances, depending on the cushions for each engine in question. We will tell you separately about the repair of 8 and 16 valve engines.

8 valve motors

  1. Select a flat surface to repair, place rear wheel chocks, and turn on the handles.
  2. Remove the engine protection.
  3. Unscrew the tensioner bolts of the generator belt, after which this belt must be removed. You will need a 13mm wrench.
  4. Place a jack under the machine, place a solid wooden plank on top and raise the engine until it releases the load from the supports.
  5. Using a 15 key, unscrew the central fastening nut of the worn cushion.
  6. Now, using a 13 key, unscrew the cushion fixing bolts installed on the bracket.
  7. From the bottom near the right arch, 3 more bolts are unscrewed. They are responsible for connecting the bracket to the spar. You need a 17 mm key.
  8. The bracket is removed, the pillow is removed and replaced with a new one.
  9. Further assembly is carried out in the reverse order.
  10. Move the jack under the transmission and then raise it.
  11. Using a 15 wrench, unscrew the nut of the central fastener of the left cushion.
  12. With a 13 key, a pair of support fixing bolts are unscrewed, after which it is removed.
  13. Replace the damaged element and then reassemble.
  14. Remove a pair of nuts with a 17 spanner. They fix the pillow to the body. Then a couple of nuts connecting the pillow to the gearbox are unscrewed.
  15. Remove the rear support.
  16. With a 17 key, the fastening nut connecting the bracket to the pillow is dismantled. A new rubber part is installed in place of the old element.
  17. The rear support is returned to its original state by reassembling.

16 valve motor

If you have a 16 valve engine under the hood, then there are some nuances for replacing it.

On 8 and 16 valve motors, dismantling and replacement of side cushions is carried out in a similar manner, there is no difference. And the front lower ones change differently.

To change the front lower cushion on a 16 valve engine, you need:

  • Remove the front lower support rod securing bolts in relation to the front suspension cross member. For these purposes, arm yourself with a 15 key;
  • Unscrew the retaining nut that holds the support to the engine bracket. You will need a pair of keys at once and both for 15. The bolt is removed;
  • Remove the support, change the pillow on it or replace the entire assembly;
  • Reassemble;
  • In the engine compartment, unscrew the fastening bolt of the upper front support to the car body, while holding its nut by hand. The key for 17 will come in handy here;
  • Take out the bolt together with the nut;
  • Dismantle the fastening bolt of the front upper support in relation to the bracket of the power unit using keys 15. The bolt and nut are removed;
  • The support can now be removed, the pillow or the entire assembly can be replaced;
  • Assembly is carried out in reverse order.

To reduce the longitudinal movement, an additional support can be installed. It is also called a suspension bar. Mostly they can be found in the vastness of online stores.

To mount an additional support on an 8-valve power unit installed under the hood of your VAZ 2110, you will need to purchase a special bracket that serves to transfer the ignition module.
