For VAZ 2109, gearbox oil is changed every five years, which, in terms of mileage, is about 70-75 thousand kilometers. The drain plug for the VAZ 2109 is located at the bottom of the box, as shown by the arrows in the photo.
The oil in the gearbox remains unchanged for a fairly long time.

Today, there are a lot of brands of imported and domestic production on sale. The variety makes you dizzy and your eyes run wide.
It is not recommended to purchase the most expensive and not necessarily imported. Today, as practice shows, a high price does not mean quality.
Since now there are many fakes. The likelihood of acquiring a fake is very high.
Also, do not take the cheapest and first available... The gearbox is not an engine for you, and the quality of the oil is as important here as in the engine.
Earlier, when there was still no transmission oil, engine oil was poured into the VAZ box. Even the manufacturer itself recommends this.
And now, filling the engine gearbox, you also do not risk anything. If at the same time you drive in the winter, and you have poured synthetic flooring into the gearbox, then it will not solidify in the box and will not thicken in the cold.
At the moment, modern special gear oils have been specially developed for gearboxes of VAZ cars, for example: TM-4a, TM-4, "RECSOL T" with a viscosity of 80W-85 (corresponds to GL-4), "Omskoil Trans P" with a viscosity of 80W-85 (corresponds to GL-4/5), "Volnez TM4" with a viscosity of 80W-90 (corresponds to GL-4), as well as many different imported brands of similar quality.
We recommend that you choose the one that suits your car and do not take a steam bath.
To change the oil with your own hands, it is important to know:
- The procedure does not require any special skills or special tools from you.
- The oil change in the gearbox for the VAZ 2109 is made when it is not cooled down.
- That is, it is recommended to make a replacement after the trip.
- The probe (pointer) is located under the hood (if we are looking at the front of the car) at the bottom right, located at the checkpoint.
- The optimum level is the upper mark on the oil dipstick.
- Do not pour above the top mark, it will flow out of the box.
- The lower mark shows the minimum acceptable level.
- If the level drops below the bottom mark, your box will fail very quickly. To avoid this, control the level every 10 thousand kilometers.
This is how the oil is changed in the VAZ 2109 gearbox:
- We work on a lift or a viewing ditch.
- We preheat the box after driving at least 10 kilometers in your car.
- First, remove the rubber cap, rinse it and clean the breather hole with a wire.
- Then we install the cap in its place.
- We unscrew the gearbox oil drain plug, first substitute a container for oil under the box.
- We drain it and screw the oil drain plug into place.
- We take out the oil level dipstick.
- Fill a new one through the dipstick hole.
- We wipe the dipstick with a rag and put it in place.
- Once again we take out the dipstick and check the oil level in the gearbox using it.
- If necessary, add oil to the box up to the upper mark.
