How to replace the ignition switch on a VAZ 21099

The ignition lock, despite its size and inconspicuous location, plays an important role in the "life" of the car. Failure of this small unit can paralyze the operation of your vehicle. Today we will look at how to independently replace the ignition lock with a VAZ 21099.

Initially, the main task of the ignition lock was to protect the VAZ 21099 from theft. But as practice has shown, in order to start a car it is not necessary to have a key, in other words, the protection from the ignition lock came out - "so-so". Advanced car thieves are able to crack the protection of the most sophisticated anti-theft systems in a matter of seconds, and the VAZ 21099 ignition lock or other domestic analogue is entertainment for beginners.

By and large, an ignition switch is an ordinary breaker that closes or opens certain groups of contacts. A faulty ignition switch will increase the already greater likelihood of theft of your car, in addition, it will create big trouble for you yourself and, as a rule, at the most inopportune moment for this.

The car may not start due to poor contact... It is easy to check, it is enough to have an ohmmeter and a few minutes of time.

1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Remove the lower steering column shroud.

3. Disconnect the terminals and check the resistance with an ohmmeter. Serviceable contacts must have zero resistance, otherwise it is necessary to replace the contact group or the entire ignition lock as a whole.

Replacing the lock cylinder with a VAZ 21099

The need to completely replace the VAZ 21099 ignition lock can arise only in the case of the above problems, but if the cause of the malfunction is one of its parts, then it makes sense to make a partial repair of the ignition lock. For example, it is not uncommon for the ignition key to turn badly in the keyhole; the malfunction can be eliminated by replacing the ignition lock cylinder. In order to carry out such a repair, it is enough to have a minimum set of tools and knowledge. Only a screwdriver and a hammer are required from the tool.

Before starting work, you need to de-energize the VAZ 21099 ignition lock, for this, as always, remove the negative terminal from the battery. Next, you need to remove the steering column cover. Then, in order to facilitate the cylinder replacement procedure, remove the ignition switch. Replace the faulty lock cylinder with a working one and reassemble everything in the reverse order. Reinstall the ignition switch.

Replacing the contact group of the ignition lock VAZ 21099

From a financial point of view, replacing a contact group is the least expensive. Basically, as in the previous case with the lock cylinder, you will have to remove the lock and cover. In order to avoid the troubles associated with confusing contacts, I recommend to number or somehow mark the wires where which one was connected, this will save time and nerves. Some models of locks have a retaining ring in the contact group; you will need an awl to remove it. Do not forget to reinstall the retaining ring when finished.

If everything is much more complicated for you and the replacement of the larva or the contact group did not lead to anything, you cannot avoid replacing the ignition switch, how to do it.

Replacing the ignition lock VAZ 21099 with your own hands

1. For this work, you need to use special bolts with breakaway heads, I do not recommend using twenty-mm M6 instead, because in this case it will be easier to remove your ignition switch not only for you, but also for the hijackers.

2. Using a chisel, you need to unscrew or knock down the bolts.

3. Before replacing the lock, turn the key to the "I" position so that the latch-lock that locks the steering shaft mechanism can enter the lock case.

4. Now that nothing is in the way, you can start installing a new ignition switch.

5. Install it on the steering column, secure with a bracket, then tighten the structure with new mounting bolts.

6. After installation, do not forget to make sure that the steering shaft locking mechanism is working correctly, if the mechanism does not work, after a full turn of the steering wheel, you need to adjust the position of the ignition switch on the steering column.

7. After completing the position adjustment and checking the locking mechanism operability, tighten the bolts until the heads are completely detached, for this use a “10 ″ spanner wrench.

Start the engine, check for correct operation and no problems with starting. If all is well, then the replacement of the ignition lock with a VAZ 21099 with your own hands has been successfully completed. Recall that in the previous article we looked at.
