Russian tires: the best winter and summer tires made in Russia. Spikes or Velcro - ZR experts choose tires for the winter Choice of winter studded tires r14

The car market offers a huge assortment of tires, it is very difficult to choose the best ones. Therefore, to simplify the choice of motorists, independent experts compile ratings of winter tires, they indicate the advantages and disadvantages of tires of various brands.

In the winter season, drivers have a question: "to stud or not to stud tires?" Studded products are designed for a harsh winter, provide normal vehicle stability when driving on ice or deep snow. Non-studded tires are not only suitable for driving on icy or snow-covered roads, they can be used on dry or wet road surfaces. There is an alternative option - these are the so-called "Velcro", they have a large sipe of the tread blocks, this design, in the absence of studs, ensures the stability of the car on snow or ice. Which of these tires is better depends on the preferences of the driver and the operating conditions of the vehicle.

When choosing tires for the winter on your own, use the ratings of winter tires, when they are compiled by independent experts, the following characteristics of tires of various brands are taken into account:

  • braking distance of the car on a dry, snow-covered, slushy, ice-covered road;
  • maximum vehicle acceleration;
  • fuel consumption;
  • rubber noise;
  • driving comfort.

Comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of rubber of different brands allows us to determine the leaders in the production of quality tires.

Conclusion

The ratings of winter tires determine the top-best manufacturers, allow you to choose the most suitable tire option for a specific car and its operating conditions. It should be borne in mind that the winner does not always match the characteristics of the operating conditions of the vehicle, and outsiders, in most cases, behave well when driving around the city.

Also consider the tire manufacturer's recommended tire sizes and the matching tires and rims. As a rule, it is possible to install discs with a larger diameter and rubber with a lower profile, for example, discs with a radius of R14 can be replaced with R15 or R16, choosing the appropriate rubber.

Bearing in mind the crisis, we chose the most popular and most affordable studded tires, not forgetting about the Chinese ones. Seven of eleven of these tires turned out to be less than 2,500 rubles. There are not many new products in the "VAZ" standard size, but we "had it with us" - the Continental ContiIceContact 2 tires are just entering the market. For the first time in our tests, almost the most affordable domestic "spike" Avatyre Freeze (1770 rubles), Polish Sava Eskimo Stud tires (2135 rubles), the Chinese Aeolus Ice Challenger (2140 rubles) and the Japanese Yokohama iceGUARD iG55 (2590 rubles) are participating in our tests. Among the "Scandinavians" the choice is much more modest. According to manufacturers, the share of spikes in the Russian market ranges from 65 to 80%, that is, there is very little space for neships. We found only seven sets. The cheapest are the Cordiant Winter Drive for 2050 rubles and the Nordman RS for 2225 rubles. The middle price category (2500-3000 rubles) is represented by the "Japanese" Bridgestone Blizzak VRX and Toyo Observe GSi-5, as well as Polish-made Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 2. We did not even disdain a couple of top models Nokian and Continental, which are more expensive than 3000 rubles apiece.

The tests were carried out in January - February at the AVTOVAZ test site, near Togliatti. The winter was not very frosty: the temperature jumped in the range of -25… -5 ºС. The asphalt part was rolled out in early May, on dry roads. We worked at night when the temperature did not rise above + 5 ... + 7 ºС. It is this temperature that tire workers consider transitional from winter to summer tires and vice versa. Test car - Lada Kalina, equipped with ABS.

HOW YOU RUN, LIKE GO

The most important part of testing a winter tire is running it in. After all, it depends on it how well the tires will work on snow and ice and how long they will last. Incorrect running-in of the “spike” can be easily ruined: when driving aggressively on non-rolled tires, the spikes will simply start to fly out. We ran each set of studded tires for 500 km. Without sudden acceleration and deceleration, so that each spike falls into place and the rubber grips its base tightly. To do this, we divide the entire run into three or four parts, making a break in movement for an hour or two after each. For running in non-studded soft "Scandinavians", popularly referred to as "Velcro", 300 km is enough. And the driving style should be more aggressive, with slight slip during acceleration. Here, the primary task of running-in is different - to completely remove from the tread sipes the residual grease that was applied to the mold (grease is needed in order to exclude damage to the tread with 3D cuts when removing the newly welded tire from the mold). In addition, on these tires, you need to remove a thin surface layer of rubber, which after baking turns out to be slightly harder than the core. You don't have to worry about the wear of the sharp edges of the lamellas: on modern models they are designed in such a way that they self-sharpen with mutual friction. This ensures the stability of the characteristics of the non-studded tires throughout the entire service life.

HOW TO PUNCH?

On run-in tires, we measure the hardness of the rubber and the amount of protrusion of the studs, comparing the results with those obtained on virgin tires. After running-in, the Shore hardness of the rubber, as a rule, changes by several units in one direction or another. The thorns, too, can crawl out or go deep, as they fall into place. In Russia, the amount of stud protrusion is not regulated. But in the countries of the European Union, where the use of studded tires is allowed, it is limited - no more than 1.2 mm on new tires. This compromise value was determined by life: a smaller protrusion will not allow achieving effective grip on ice, a larger one will deteriorate grip on asphalt and lead to a quick loss of "studs" during operation. In our long-term tests, the average stud protrusion after running in is 1.3 to 1.6 mm. And now almost all tires fall into this range with a deviation of one tenth of a millimeter. The exceptions were four models. Firstly, this is the Chinese Aeolus: its spines protrude only 0.5-0.8 mm. It is immediately clear that on the ice he will not have enough stars from heaven. Secondly, Cordiant: the protrusion of the studs reaches 2.0 mm - the maximum permissible value in Europe (although no one checks this parameter on machines). But Bridgestone and Sava are alarming: after running in, some of their studs stuck out by 2.3 mm! Moreover, not only the hard-alloy spike insert rises above the tread (as a rule, it protrudes 1.2 mm above the body), but also almost a millimeter of its cylindrical body. It is clear that on ice these tires will have an advantage over "law-abiding" ones. At one time, we checked how the protrusion of the studs affects the grip properties of tires on ice. Every tenth of a millimeter reduces the braking distance by 2.5–3%. Spikes with a projection of 2.3 mm will outperform those that stick out only by 1.3 mm by at least 25-30%!

I repeat that in our country the protrusion of thorns is not limited by any laws. But according to the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union, which unites Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, for tires manufactured from January 1, 2016, for the protrusion of spikes on new tires, a value of 1.2 ± 0.3 mm is set. That is, the stud should protrude above the tread by at least 0.9 mm and no more than 1.5 mm. It will be interesting to see Bridgestone and Sava tires next year.

To get acquainted with the test results (they are summarized in tables), follow the links: table number 1 and table number 2.

WHAT ARE WE TESTING?

In the test sequence, we first measure acceleration and deceleration on snow and ice. Why? During testing, the studs are subjected to increased loads, under the influence of which the studs can slowly move outward, and if these measurements are taken last, the studs will protrude more. After measuring the longitudinal grip, we check the tires on an ice circle, test them on a rearrangement. And after that we evaluate handling, directional stability, cross-country ability and comfort. At the end of all tests on the "white" roads, we again check the protrusion of the studs. If during testing it has not changed, then the spikes are held securely in the rubber, and this is a guarantee that they will walk for a long time. The most stable were Continental, Nordman, Yokohama and Bridgestone, with these tires remaining unchanged during all tests. Nokian's thorns crawled out by one "ten", we also consider this result excellent. Toyo and Aeolus look quite tolerable: their spikes have increased from zero to 0.2–0.3 mm. But the Avatyre, Cordiant, Formula and Sava tires have a menacing increase - up to 0.4–0.5 mm. There is a suspicion that at such a growth rate, the spikes will not stay in the tires for a long time. Sava is the absolute record holder in terms of stud protrusion: some studs sticking out 2.7 mm after the tests!

Asphalt tests are also carried out taking into account the intensity of rubber wear. We start with the assessment and measurement of the rolling resistance and only in the final we carry out braking on the asphalt. Can you guess why? If not, let's answer in the words of specialists from Continental, who call emergency braking on asphalt stress for winter tires - even with ABS. And they believe that after a dozen or a half of such braking, the tires become unusable. But we just slow down six or eight times on dry land and the same amount on a wet road. After testing, we thoroughly inspect the spikes and protectors of "stressed" tires. The three models with more than 2mm of stud protrusion (Bridgestone, Cordiant and Sava) differ from the others by the pits in the rubber near the studs. When braking, the tall studs tilt strongly and pull out pieces of the tread. And the housings of the spikes themselves are worn down, have lost their cylindrical shape and now look like cones. Surprisingly, none of these tires have lost their studs. Trouble came from where they did not expect - the well-bred Toyo parted with 14 spikes on four wheels. It is noteworthy that last year, when the spikes at the end of the tests stuck out a little more (up to 2.3 mm) than now (up to 1.9 mm), she had no losses.

STUD OR VELCK: AFTERWORD

So what to prefer - "spikes" or "Scandinavian"? When choosing, remember the main advantages and disadvantages of both. Studs have more stable grip on all surfaces, but they are less comfortable. Softer and quieter Velcro straps are more demanding on the level of driving skills on ice. In addition, I would not dare to recommend "Scandinavians" for cars without ABS: when the wheels are locked on ice, their grip drops significantly, and this is extremely dangerous. The undisputed winner of our test was the Nokian tires, which in recent years have been the trendsetter in winter fashion: in the class of studded tires, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 became the leader, and among the Scandinavians the Hakkapeliitta R2 took the lead. But they are also the most expensive. So the choice is not easy - and our tables with recommendations for each tire will help make it.

We warn those who are especially corrosive: you should not compare the results of "spikes" and "Scandinavians" with each other, they are not without reason given in different tables. We know from our own experience that the difference depends on the temperature. In severe frost (-20 ºС and below), soft "Scandinavians" will win on ice, in "greenhouses" (above -10 ºС), the best results will be at "spikes". Perhaps only the behavior on the asphalt can be compared. But it should be remembered that tire workers do not compare the data obtained on different days. Indeed, the measurement result is influenced not only by the temperature of the air and asphalt, but also by humidity, wind strength, the amount of ultraviolet radiation and much more. Together with the author, Anton Ananiev, Vladimir Kolesov, Yuri Kurochkin, Evgeny Larin, Anton Mishin, Andrey Obrazumov, Valery Pavlov and Dmitry Testov took part in the tire tests. We would like to express our gratitude to the tire manufacturing companies that provided their products for the test, as well as to the employees of the AVTOVAZ test site and the Togliatti company Volgashintorg for technical support.

BRIDGESTONE BLIZZAK SPIKE-02 SUV

This winter season, a new line of sizes of the already well-known and well-proven Blizzak Spike-02 model, designed for SUV cars, will be presented on the Russian market. This studded tire offers superior braking performance on ice and snow, as well as extended service life. The directional stud with extended edge length attaches securely to the tread. The V-shaped tread pattern has a high density center edge with an optimized angle of alignment. The composition of the rubber compound ensures its elasticity at low temperatures and a high level of wear resistance. The tire is available in 37 standard sizes with rim diameters from 15 to 21 inches and with a profile from 45 to 70.

BRIDGESTONE BLIZZAK VRX

Bridgestone developers themselves say that this model is the best that the company has created in the line of non-studded winter tires. Grip on icy surfaces is largely due to the use of the innovative MultiCell Compound rubber compound: the micropores of the upper tread layer absorb moisture from the ice surface, thereby ensuring direct tire contact with the road surface. And as the tread wears down, the new Multi-Cell Compound creates new micropores to keep the rubber compound soft and provide effective braking for a long time. The new asymmetrical tread pattern improves flotation in snow. In Bridgestone's own tests, Blizzak VRX tires provided a 10% reduction in braking distances compared to the previous model. On the market, Blizzak VRX tires are available in 59 sizes with rim diameters ranging from 13 to 19 inches.

BRIDGESTONE BLIZZAK DM-V2

The Bizzak DM-V2 is a studless crossover and SUV tire. Compared to the tires of the previous generation, the handling characteristics on snow and ice surfaces, as well as braking on ice, are improved. The tire uses a Multi-Cell Compound rubber compound, the micropores of which effectively absorb moisture, providing good grip on icy surfaces. The use of this technology also contributes to a longer tire life. Improved performance on snow and ice is provided by a new directional tread pattern that uses 3D sipes. The large number of edges contributes to the reliable grip of the tire with the road surface. Better contact with the road and improved braking performance compared to the previous model is also provided by the new shape of the shoulder blocks. Blizzak DM-V2 tires are available in 58 sizes with rims ranging from 15 to 22 inches.

CONTIVICINGCONTACT 6

This studless tire is specially designed for the Scandinavian and Russian winter. When changing the model, the developers have made a special emphasis on a high level of adhesion on all types of surfaces. This versatility is achieved thanks to a three-part asymmetric tread made from an innovative rubber compound optimized for softness. The outer part of the tread provides traction on dry asphalt, the middle part on ice, and the inner part on snow. The combination of tread design contributes to good performance in the ever-changing city road conditions. The sipe design makes the tire resistant to aquaplaning on wet asphalt, and the bridged tread blocks work like snow chains in the snow. For the first time, some of the standard sizes of this model have been released using the ContiCilent technology. This is a layer of polyurethane foam that adheres to the inner surface of the tire from the tread side and effectively absorbs sound vibrations transmitted to the wheel rim, and then to the suspension and body parts. Research has shown that this technology can reduce cabin noise by approximately 9 dB. This season, the ContiVicingContact 6 line has been expanded with 13 sizes and includes 110 items for both passenger cars and SUVs.

CONTINENTAL ICECONTACT 2

Studded tire with a soldered stud with more edges and less weight. Continental says this cleat attachment technology provides 10 times more retention in the tread than conventional cleats. The ContiSeal anti-puncture technology is available in a number of standard sizes of the IceContact 2 tire, the sealant of which seals punctures with a diameter of up to 5 mm without subsequent repair, as well as the ContiSilent technology, which, thanks to a layer of special foam, significantly reduces the level of noise and vibration. Also in the tire, in comparison with its predecessor ContiContact, the handling on dry roads was improved by 9%, on ice by 2%, and the indicators of braking and traction on ice transmission increased by 8%. Another feature of the tire is its asymmetrical tread pattern. The double-fired technology ensures increased tire life and safety of the studs, due to which the tire and stud are practically one whole. This season, the IceContact 2 tire line has been expanded with 23 sizes to include 135 passenger car and SUV models.

CORDIANT SNOW CROSS

The characteristic feature of this tire is the original Spice-Cor stud made by the renowned company Scason. The spike body is made of aluminum and the carbide insert is made of tungsten carbide. The optimal cleat hole shape ensures both a secure grip of the cleat in the tire and the transmission of high traction on ice. The modified design of the base layer enhances the impact of the spike on the ice. In addition, the original design of the spike body prevents its rotation in the tread layer and increases the reliability of the spike retention in the tire. The new tread chemistry extends the tire's operating temperature range to -53 ° C. According to the test results, new technologies have reduced the braking distance on ice, in comparison with the previous generation of tires, by 12%. The Snow Cross range this season in 35 sizes with rim diameters ranging from 14 to 18 inches. The range also includes reinforced tires for SUV segment vehicles (13 sizes with rim diameters from 16 to 18 inches).

DUNLOP WINTER MAXX 02

Dunlop Tire CIS introduces to the Russian and CIS markets a new development of Sumitomo Rubber Industries - the non-studded Winter Maxx 02 model with an asymmetric tread pattern that is universal for all surfaces. Its design uses the sharp edges of the blocks, which facilitate grip on the ice surface, and wide drainage grooves provide self-cleaning of the tread from snow and slush. Developed lateral drainage grooves effectively drain moisture from the contact patch. The tread pattern is designed in such a way that the tire, due to the effect of snow compression, has zones of increased adhesion to the snow surface. The tire uses the Miura-Ori zigzag lamella technology, already familiar from the previous models of the company, but in the Winter Maxx 02 their length is increased. Thus, the tread blocks have more sharp edges, which improves traction on snow and ice surfaces. The new, more elastic Mega Nano Fit Rubber material also improves grip. To maintain the stable performance of the tire during operation, a softening component made from biomass is used in the rubber compound. The tire is available in 36 standard sizes with rim diameters from 13 to 19 inches.

FIRESTONE ICE CRUISER 7

For the winter season, Bridgestone has prepared a new product for its subsidiary brand - the Ice Cruiser 7. The main innovation of the tire is the original stud, which provides high braking performance on ice surfaces. The cohesive structure of the large center tread blocks contributes to good directional stability, and the large rigid sidewall blocks help control precision when cornering. At the same time, the sharp edges of the blocks provide a secure grip on snowy surfaces. Developed lateral grooves effectively remove moisture and snow slurry from the contact patch of the tire with the road. Taking into account the specifics of our roads, there is another important detail: both the center of the tire and its sidewalls are made more durable, which significantly reduces the risk of damage. This season, the tire is presented in 19 standard sizes with rim diameters from 13 to 17 inches.

GOODYEAR ULTRAGRIP ICE SUV

Non-studded tire designed for crossovers and SUVs. The composition of the rubber compound of this model has an increased content of silica, which allows the tire to maintain stable performance in a wide range of winter temperatures. When developing the design of the shoulder protector of the UltraGrip Ice SUV model, sip locking technology was used: deeper protrusions of the prismatic sipes provide block rigidity during movement, which positively affects handling when cornering and making maneuvers. Special attention of the developers was paid to the optimal distribution of pressure in the contact patch of the tire with the road - a characteristic that significantly affects the performance of acceleration and braking. A wear indicator is provided in the center of the tread, allowing the owner to monitor the condition of the tire. The model is offered in standard sizes with bore diameters from 16 to 20 inches.

GOODYEAR ULTRAGRIP ICE ARCTIC SUV

Key to the development of this model was the MultiControl Ice technology, combining solutions related to stud construction, sipe design and tread pattern. The special shape of the hard-alloy spike insert allowed to improve the acceleration performance (this is facilitated by the optimized spike positioning), braking and handling on ice, as well as to reduce the loads that prevent the spike from retaining in the tire. The enlarged trailing edge of the hard-alloy cleat insert allows for increased resistance when in contact with the ice surface, which increases the braking efficiency compared to classic cleats. When cornering, one of the lateral edges of the cleat becomes at an angle of 90 ° in relation to the path of travel - this increases grip and improves handling. For effective grip on rolled snow, the V-shaped sipes in the tread layer are staggered, and the “sawtooth” design of the shoulder area of the tread contributes to effective grip when driving in deep snow. Open drainage grooves, widened in the shoulder area, allow water, slush and slush to quickly drain out of the tire-road contact patch, which reduces the risk of aquaplaning. The tire is offered in standard sizes with rim diameters from 15 to 20 inches.

GT RADIAL WINTERPRO2

This new studless tire is designed for compact and mid-size vehicles as well as crossovers and SUVs. Directional tread design provides firm grip on snow and efficient drainage of water and slurry from the tire-to-road contact patch. The optimal distribution of thin sipes in the tread parts improves traction and braking performance on snow and ice, and the edges of the tread blocks perform a stabilizing function when cornering, increasing lateral traction. The new rubber compound with increased silica content allows the tire to maintain stable performance even at very low temperatures. The tire is available in 36 standard sizes with rim diameters from 13 to 17 inches.

GT RADIAL ICEPRO3

NOKIAN HAKKAPELIITTA 9

Nokian Tires is launching a new studded tire with completely new solutions. First of all, these are different spikes in the center and side of the tire. The former are responsible for acceleration and braking, the latter for lateral grip. Traditionally for the winter tire range of Nokian Tires, the novelty has a directional tread pattern and a fixed direction of rotation. The tread pattern is heavily cut by supporting 3D sipes that link the tread blocks together for improved handling. Deep grooves, together with snow traction enhancers on both sides of the mid blocks in the center of the tread, provide sharper edges for improved snow traction in both longitudinal and lateral directions. The main components of the new environmentally friendly rubber compound are silica, rapeseed oil (which improves the tear resistance of the compound) and a new biomaterial that helps the rubber compound to remain flexible even at very low temperatures. The new rubber compound also effectively minimizes interior noise. Among other things, the elasticity of the tread improves the performance of the sipes, which in turn provides effective traction on snow. The stability of the chemical bonds in the tread layer ensures the stable characteristics of the tire during its entire service life. The very strong steel belt belt contributes to a high degree of controllability even at high speeds. The tire is available in 52 standard sizes with rim diameters from 14 to 20 inches.
