The Mazda CX-7 car produced by the well-known Japanese company belongs to the segment of mid-size crossovers. The car was first shown in early 2006 at the Los Angeles Auto Show and was a production version of the MX-Crossport concept. The first car rolled off the assembly line at the plant in Hiroshima and was intended for Japan, Europe and Russia - for each of these markets, their own configurations were produced.

The main overall dimensions of the Mazda CX 7 correspond to the class of mid-size crossovers - and are even comparable to the parameters of some 7-8-seater versions. In 2009, a restyled version of the model appeared, featuring a set of power units. However, the dimensions of the car remained practically unchanged - except for the configuration with a 2.5-liter engine. In 2012, the production of the already obsolete crossover was discontinued.

One of the main parameters of any car, including the CX-7, is the body size, on which several characteristics depend at once:

  • the volume of the passenger compartment, which affects the level of comfort for passengers and the driver;

Interior dimensions

The generous length of the CX-7 provides a fairly spacious cabin that is not only comfortable, but also good in size. Moreover, the dimensions of the interior of the car are ideally complemented by a large number of compartments for small items - from the 5.4-liter glove compartment between the seats to the glove box in front of the front row passenger and compartments in the backrests where cards or documents can be stored.


However, despite the dimensions of the Mazda CX 7, only four can comfortably fit in it - that is, the driver and 3 passengers. After all, the back of the model, which is characterized by a large volume for its class, is equipped with a sofa that is not very suitable for three adults. Luggage compartment

The European premiere of the new Mazda CX-7 took place at the 2006 Paris International Motor Show. Masterfully combining the bright personality of sports cars with the practicality of SUVs, Mazda engineers have created a car that has an attractive appearance, outstanding dynamics and a high level of comfort. The CX-7 is an example of a purely sporty approach to building an SUV.

The unconventional body design, superb interior and breathtaking driving dynamics make the Mazda CX-7 a car that defies the established canon. The model is built on the upgraded Mazda6 all-wheel drive platform.

Large, low-positioned air intake - helps cool the powerful DISI (Direct Injection Spark Ignition) engine. The radiator grill blends seamlessly into the bonnet, creating a continuous line. The shape of the front fenders is a bit like the Mazda RX-8. The windshield is at an acute angle, the rear doors are followed by the side rear windows, which taper sharply at the rear. The basic version of the Mazda CX-7 also includes a proprietary all-wheel drive system (Mazda Active Torque Split All-WheelDrive), which prevents the wheels from spinning on slippery surfaces and provides excellent traction on normal roads. Using real-time information from multiple sensors, the system continuously monitors the road and differential usage. In addition to all-wheel drive, the vehicle has Traction Control System (TSC) and Traction Control System (DCS) as standard.

The lightweight yet rigid body of the Mazda CX-7 is designed using energy absorption and distribution technology to ensure a safe and dynamic ride. In 2009, Mazda carried out a restyling and technical update of the CX-7 crossover. The presentation of the updated car for the North American market took place in February 2009 in Toronto. The European premiere took place a month later at the Geneva Motor Show. The dimensions are now: length - 4680 mm, width - 1870 mm, height - 1645 mm, base - 2750 mm, ground clearance - 208 mm.

The exterior of the car has changed in accordance with the modern style of the brand. The branded “smile”, similar to the one that has already appeared on the “face” of the updated Mazda3 and Mazda6, is now also on the CX-7. The front end received a new pentagon-shaped grille and the bumper was fitted with new fog lights. The grille as well as the side sills include new chrome details. Changes in the rear spoiler, located above the trunk window, also contributed to the improvement in appearance. The picture is complemented by new wheels of 18 or 19 inches (depending on the equipment version), with a three-dimensional look. The restyled model also has a modified rear lighting and an updated interior.

Inside the car can be found a new refreshed instrument panel, along with a 4.1-inch LCD display, Bluetooth, a mid-range stereo and a driver's seat with memory for three owners. The luggage compartment in the stowed state intervenes 455 liters, the trunk is narrow and long with a large loading height, the folding seats are designed to increase its volume. The initial configuration of the Mazda CX-7 Touring is equipped quite richly: climate control, central locking, power windows, electric mirrors and heated front seats, trip computer, radio with CD / MP3.

In America, the CX-7 lineup has been expanded to include an economical new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 161 horsepower. This engine is suitable for a leisurely driver, for whom sharp acceleration, high-speed taxiing and high maximum speed are far from the first places in the assessment of the car. Acceleration to 100 km / h takes 10.3 seconds. For lovers of drive, the familiar 2.3 DISI turbo engine with a capacity of 238 hp, familiar from the previous version, is more suitable. The range of power units was also replenished with a 2.2-liter MZR-CD turbodiesel with 170 hp. For the European market only, the vehicle is equipped with the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) after-treatment system. With its help, it is possible to reduce the content of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust by 40%. The engine meets the requirements of the Euro 5 environmental standard.

There are also one more gearboxes. To the company, to the already familiar six-speed "automatic" Mazda residents have added a five-band one. True, a crossover equipped with such a box can only be front-wheel drive and only with a 161-horsepower engine.

The Mazda CX-7 is one of the few models that combines sporty design and driving pleasure with the space and functionality of a true SUV.



Within 4 years after the release, the car did not change, and a little later a number of structural changes were made during the restyling. But it did not become sufficiently popular, it was overtaken in sales by another compact crossover of the company - CX5, which appeared later. Therefore, the company decided to remove this model from production.

Mazda CX 7 was discontinued in 2012.

Although now it is not produced, this is not a reason not to consider this crossover in more detail, nevertheless, it was the first from Mazda.

Exterior

To create CX 7, the designers have designed a completely new platform. At the same time, for a quick solution of design problems, many of the nodes from the crossover were borrowed from other Mazda models.

Externally, the designers tried to combine the sporty character inherent in all Mazda models with the universal performance of an SUV.

This attempt was successful - neat, with smooth body lines and practically without a strong transition from the front of the car to the windshield - CX 7 has sporty notes in its design... A smooth transition is made from the roof to the stern of the crossover.

The front is rounded to the maximum. At the transition from bumper to hood, there is a radiator grill. At the same time, it is not significant in size and is covered with a coarse-mesh stylistic mesh. At some distance from the grille, diamond-shaped headlights were placed on the sides, the corners of which were also rounded.

The main place on the bumper is taken by a fairly large air intake, decorated at the top with a chrome strip. The intake itself is covered with the same mesh as the grill. Three-section stylized niches were installed on the sides. Fog lights are located in the upper section, and the other two sections are reserved for additional air intakes. The bottom of the bumper is decorated with a small skirt with a protective strip.

The side parts of the car are notable only for the wide chrome edging of the side glazing, a small transition step in the lower part, and overlays to protect the sills.

The back is pretty interesting. There is a smooth transition from the roof to the almost vertical position of the tailgate bottom. The rear window top is decorated with a symbolic spoiler.

The bumper protrudes somewhat, but its corners are rather rounded. An interesting solution was the placement of brake light repeaters. They were installed on a protective strip below the bumper, at the level of the exhaust pipes.

In terms of dimensions, the CX 7 is quite a standard mid-size crossover. They are as follows:

Interior

The salon now looks somewhat outdated, but also unusual. The dashboard is presented in the form of three large wells. The central and left ones are reserved for analog sensors, and the right one is for the on-board computer. Moreover, its display is monochrome.

The center console body was set at a slight angle. At the top of it, under the visor, two small displays were placed. One is navigation, it is colored, the other is for displaying information on the operation of the audio system and climate system, it is monochrome.

Three deflectors were installed under the displays. Next comes a whole scattering of keys that control the climate and audio system. Only the gearshift lever and the parking brake lever are located on the central tunnel.

Specifications

The CX 7 crossover went on sale with several types of power units and transmissions. The technical characteristics of the power plants are different, the first in the range of power plants for the CX7 was a 2.2-liter turbodiesel with a power rating of 173 hp. The box with it was 6-speed, mechanical, and the drive was on both axles.

The most common was the 2.3-liter diesel unit. In a car that came with an automatic 6-speed gearbox, this unit developed 238 hp. Also, CX 7 came with a motor of the same volume, but with "mechanics", also 6-speed, but this motor was already producing 260 hp.

There was also a gasoline unit in the din. In terms of volume, it was the largest - 2.5 liters, but its power was only 163 hp, since it was atmospheric. Also with this motor there was a 5-band automatic machine, and the drive was front.

With a sporty appearance, Mazda's crossover did not have that character. Its speed and dynamic performance was mediocre.

So, the engine volume The 2.2 TD automatic accelerated to 100 km / h in 11.3 seconds, reaching a top speed of 200 km / h and an average fuel consumption of 7.5 liters. And finally, the gasoline engine with automatic transmission accelerates in 10.3 seconds, its maximum speed is 173 km / h, and its fuel consumption is 9.4 liters.


Configuration and price

Mazda CX7 came to dealers in several trim levels. They meant different technical equipment, but there was also a set of equipment, which was basic and all cars were equipped with it. This kit included:

  • systems (ABS, TCS, EBD);
  • Cruise control;
  • steering wheel with leather trim and multifunction;
  • heated and adjustable seats (front);
  • audio system;
  • Rain sensor;
  • package of airbags.

The CX 7 crossover, although it had several power plants and transmissions, came to us only with a certain filling and trim levels.

So, we only had modifications with a 2.3 liter diesel engine and automatic transmission, as well as with a gasoline installation. There were two complete sets for them: "Sport" and "Touring".

The diesel crossover was sold at a price of 1,334 - 1,479 thousand rubles. Gasoline was cheaper - 1,184 thousand rubles.

Although the car is not produced, its owners continue to operate it. And they note that the CX 7 has excellent handling, fairly responsive motors, and a good flow rate.

To the disadvantages of CX 7, they include insufficient equipment of the car with equipment, such as an electric trunk drive, the lack of additional lighting in some places. They also note that the crossover is poorly prepared in terms of sound insulation.

Mazda CX-7 is a small C-class crossover, which is positioned as a car for every day. Despite the shortcomings that led to the early termination of production, among the main advantages of the Mazda CX-7 are good design, powerful engines, gambling handling, advanced options and good stability on any surface.

The model debuted in Los Angeles in 2006. The car went into production in the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
