X 5 53 body. BMW X5 - history - specifications - video review. Love # 5: cool design and iconic status

BMW X5, which received the E53 index. According to the old tradition, the model was presented to the public at the Detroit Auto Show. It marked the beginning of a completely new approach to the creation of cars of this class. Many motorists positioned the X5 "BMW E53" as an off-road vehicle, but the creators insisted that the car belongs to the class of crossovers with an increased degree of cross-country ability and sporting functionality.

A bit of history

Creating the first X5, the Germans did not hide that their main task was to surpass the Range Rover, producing the same respectable and powerful car, but with more modern equipment. Initially, the X5 "BMW E53" was produced at home - in Bavaria. After BMW took over Rover, the car was also produced in the American open spaces. Thus, the car mastered both Europe and the United States.

Of course, an auto giant like BMW couldn't make a bad car. The X5 E53 model has everything the company is famous for: build quality, electronics precision, material reliability and other distinctive features of the "Bavarians". The hero of our today's discussion is designed for comfortable travel on any surface and light off-road. In addition, the car was assigned the class of sports cars.

General information

The first generation model had a load-bearing body structure. It was packed with electronic systems, all-wheel drive, independent suspension, and increased ground clearance. The E53 series was distinguished by a stylish and spacious interior, which was very restrained, solid and luxurious at the same time. The standard equipment of the machine included:

  • inserts made of wood and leather (classic for a German company);
  • orthopedic chairs;
  • steering wheel adjustment;
  • climate control;
  • electric sunroof;
  • very roomy trunk.

To some extent, the E53 model still managed to catch up and surpass Range Rover. Many details were frankly copied from the legendary SUV: the solidity of the exterior, the double-leaf rear door. With the Rover, the X5 also comes with some functions, for example, speed control on the descent.

Specifications X5 "BMW E53"

The first generation of the legendary crossover was repeatedly refined both externally and constructively. One gets the impression that the Germans wanted to be ahead of their time and bring their creation to complete perfection. Initially, the car was produced, equipped with three different options for the power plant:

  1. Gasoline engine 6-cylinder in-line.
  2. The motor is 8-cylinder V-shaped. This type of engine was made of aluminum and featured a self-adjusting cooling system, continuous injection and digital electronics. Thanks to the powerful engine (286 hp), the car reached a speed of 100 km / h in almost 7 seconds. The motor is equipped with a proprietary Double Vanos gas distribution mechanism, which made it possible to squeeze the maximum speed out of the power plant at any speed. The engine was equipped with a 5-speed. This motor was considered the most interesting.
  3. Diesel engine 6-cylinder.

Later, new, more powerful motors appeared. German mechanics have created an innovative torque distribution system: when a wheel slips, the program slows it down and gives more revolutions to the other wheels. This and much more determines the high cross-country ability of the car as a crossover. The rear axle has special elastic elements, which are based on pneumatics. Even under high load, the electronics maintains the ride height at the proper level.

The brake system X5 "BMW E53" also has its own zest. Large brake discs, together with an emergency stop control program, significantly increase the braking force. The above system takes effect when the brake pedal is fully depressed. The crossover also has a speed hold setting of about 11 km / h when descending from an incline. As for that, a manual transmission was available in the basic versions, and an automatic transmission was available as an option. "BMW X5 E53" in expensive trim levels was immediately equipped with an automatic transmission.

Despite such an abundance of positive qualities, the car was far from a real SUV. The frame was soon changed to a load-bearing body, which naturally affected all the qualities of the car. The Germans were very keen on automation, although it often prevents the driver from solving a particular problem. For example, when entering a mountain or getting into a rut, the electronics does not allow you to downshift. And on sharp turns, the gas pedal freezes, and you can take the car to the desired radius only with the help of the steering wheel.

"BMW X5 E53": restyling of the technical part

Obeying the laws of the market, since 2003 the Germans began to modernize the E53 model:

  1. All-wheel drive has been completely redone.
  2. The xDrive system was improved as much as possible: the electronics began to analyze the condition of the roadway, the steepness of bends, measure the data obtained with the driving mode and independently regulate the torque between the axles.
  3. Lateral roll and damping are automatically adjusted.
  4. Parking has become easier thanks to the presence of two cameras.
  5. The brakes received a system for removing moisture from the discs.
  6. The system is so smart that any sudden release of the foot from the gas pedal is interpreted by it as preparation for emergency braking.

The V-shaped gasoline engine received the Valvetronic system, which regulates valve travel, as well as smooth intake adjustment. As a result, the engine power reached 320 hp. sec., and acceleration to the cherished 100 km was reduced to 7 seconds. The maximum speed, depending on the tires, was 210-240 km / h. Another useful change: the 5-speed gearbox has been replaced with a 6-speed one.

The upgraded crossover received a new diesel engine with a capacity of 218 liters. with. and a torque of up to 500 Nm. With this engine, even the most unpredictable obstacles were completely obeyed by the BMW X5 E53. The diesel engine could reach a speed of 210 km / h, and accelerated to 100 km in 8.3 seconds.

"BMW X5 E53": restyling of the interior and exterior

The body shape was also slightly changed, and the hood received a new, more expressive, radiator grille. The already respectable car began to look even more interesting. However, due to the plastic body kit, the car seemed a little softer. The bumpers and headlights have also undergone minor revisions. The body length has increased by 20 cm, which is quite a lot. The lengthening made it possible to add a third row of seats and make the interior removed obsessive excesses and slightly modified the dashboard.

The restyled body has achieved near-perfect aerodynamic results. Its Cx coefficient is 0.33, which is very good for a crossover.

The price of luxury

All of the above qualities, dressed in a chic shell, could well have become the reason for bringing the X5 E53 into the ranks of a luxury car, which does not always entail pleasant consequences. For example, spare parts for this car cost a lot of money. However, taking into account the Bavarian quality, the repair of the BMW X5 E53 was extremely rare for the owner. But what really amazes is the appetite of the crossover. With 10 liters per 100 km declared in the passport, it consumes almost twice as much. Another 5 liters - and the consumption will be comparable to the legendary "Hummer".

Achievements

Be that as it may, in 2002 in Australia, this model was recognized as the best four-wheel drive car. And after 3 years, she got into Top Gear and thereby confirmed her title. It was by analogy with this car that such famous cars as the Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg and

In 2007, the history of the BMW X5 E53 car ended, and it was replaced by the new X5 with the E70 index.

We continue to explore the world of used luxury crossovers and SUVs with the Five Things heading. Today we have under the microscope the adored by some and steadfastly disliked by others, the first generation BMW X5. He's still a "German"!

Following one legend of the 2000s, the Land Cruiser 100, it is time to come face to face with another one. Also from the SUV segment, but a completely different breed - in 1999 it appeared as a result of the symbiosis of a passenger chassis, all-wheel drive and a crossover body, and until 2006 was in the top sales. He is still popular today. Why is the BMW X5 E53 series so good and bad?

HATE # 5: DOUBTING BRANDED SERVICE

The first reason for hatred does not relate to the car itself, but directly concerns it. Most connoisseurs of the BMW X5 in the E53 version agree that there is no point in serving the elderly “X-fifth” with the officials - in most cases it turns out to be expensive and illiterate. In addition, there is an opinion that the proprietary regulations are "sharpened" in such a way that in no way contributes to an increase in the resource of engines. Fortunately, now there is a sufficient majority of unofficial services with fully qualified personnel and democratic prices.

LOVE # 5: COOL DESIGN AND CULT STATUS

The SUV segment car from BMW had to be exactly that - looking like a BMW and able to drive like a BMW. A very successful design combined with the dynamics, handling and image of the Bavarian brand instantly made the first "X-fifth" absolutely cult car in Russia. And no matter how many years pass, this shine will not fade.

HATE # 4: CRIMINAL TRACE

Everything that was discussed in the previous paragraph has served the model and a disservice. Those who survived the nineties, piloting the Grand Cherokee, continued into the zero, using the very first BMW X5s as war chariots. As a result, today on the secondary housing we have a huge number of severely beaten specimens, as well as shape-shifters, fire victims and other "illiquid assets". In addition, the second and third owners of relatively simple versions of the X5 eventually become the "boys" who have moved from the "four", in a couple of years shatter a good copy and put it up for sale again. “Crime” is pursuing the model, but now at a smaller level: mirrors, emblems, grilles and other “small things” are often stolen from parked cars for the purpose of resale.

LOVE # 4: BODY AND INTERIOR WELL RESPONDING TO THE TIME

The leather interior of the first generation BMW X5 requires only one thing - regular cleaning. This alone guarantees that it will practically not lose its appearance over the course of a couple of decades. The same is true for the bodywork - the quality of painting and anti-corrosion protection is so high that even the oldest cars have only pinpoint rust: under the seals, at the contact points of the bumpers with the fenders, in the wheel arches, and so on. The front bumper and the front part of the bonnet are chipped, which is a given for Russian roads. There are also a couple of unpleasant sores on the outside, noted by many: the silumin plates, which serve as internal fasteners of the door handles, break (the handle ceases to slide into place when opened), and the windshield wipers' leashes rust. But these are minor troubles that are easy to fix. On this, surprisingly, everything.

In terms of electrics and electronics, the first X5 still gives odds to many modern cars. It is stuffed with complex components, many of which work constantly and load the on-board network, and many gradually fail as a result of the ubiquitous corrosion, especially on cars that, by the will of fate, turned out to be off-road conquerors (about this hypostasis - just below). Electric dampers, electric mirrors, the interior fan motor fail, the rear lamp boards, room lights, the fifth door open button, as well as blocks located in the rear of the floor and control the audio system, navigation, heated seats, parking sensors, and, on late cars, are corroded , all-wheel drive xDrive. The sensors give errors, the panoramic sunroof gets jammed ... All these randomly occurring problems quite often disturb the drivers of the elderly "X-fifths".

LOVE # 3: GOOD ERGONOMICS AND RICH PACKAGES

Even the initial configurations (according to the popular expression of noble BMW waters - "empty as a drum") are filled with useful options so that for simpler brands this level could easily pass for the top: electric drives of seats and mirrors, heating of everything that is possible, CD -receiver with good sound, climate control, xenon headlights ... You may not have a monitor, navigation, panoramic sunroof and air suspension, but you will also be spared the age-related "migraines" associated with them. But in any version you will get the feeling that the car is as if made for you, according to the patterns of your body - everything is in its place here. And the salon remains quiet even after twenty years.

HATE # 2: EXPENSIVE POWER UNITS TO MAINTAIN

Relatively problem-free in the line of engines BMW X5 (E53) is considered only the base three-liter 231-strong "six". Even three-liter diesel engines have obvious age-related problems: wear of the turbine, manifold and glow plugs. And gasoline V8s endow BMW with the character that everyone expects from it, but along with it they also present disadvantages associated with their high heat load: ring coking, wear of valve oil seals, destruction of the cylinder coating, failure of ignition coils, injectors and several gaskets. There are also problems with the automatic transmission: with powerful V8 gearboxes are prone to overheating, and on later cars with the xDrive system, they are, in principle, less reliable (although economical and rapid-fire), plus the rejection of the differential and the transition to the all-wheel drive connected through a friction clutch led to problems with this very clutch, and the "flying" clutch system is only one of them.

Pictured: Under the hood of the BMW X5 4.6is (E53) ‘2002–03

LOVE # 2: GREAT DYNAMICS

Even an in-line petrol "six" accelerates the BMW X5 to "hundreds" in 8.8 seconds. Versions with 4.4- and 4.8-liter engines complete the standard exercise, respectively, in 7 (7.5, if it is "dorestyle") and 6.1 seconds. There is also a certain middle - it’s time to make a reservation that apart from the automatic transmission in equipping the "X-fifth" occasionally, but there is a "mechanic" - with a manual gearbox, which is paired with a diesel, that with a gasoline "six", the car accelerates in 8.3 seconds ... But these are all dry numbers, and after all, BMW, albeit rather tired, is always an emotion. And if you have switched to even the simplest version of the X5 E53 from something more prosaic, the main question of the first minutes will be: "How much else is there under the pedal?"

HATE # 1: DOESN'T LIKE STEADLESS

Strictly speaking, this statement is controversial, because all-wheel drive (both pre-styling differential and post-styling xDrive) has always been the strong point of the X5 E53, no matter how strange it may sound. Despite everything that you will read below, due to its advancedness, it allows you to climb quite far into the jungle, and on absolutely road tires. Another thing is that the suspension travels are still small, "diagonals" cannot be avoided, and approximately on the second or third of them you will leave the bumper skirts, cover up the thresholds and overheat the clutch. What can we say about the aluminum levers, which are guaranteed to bend during a more or less active game in a rally or jeep trial.

LOVE # 1: LOVES THE ROAD

And all this because the chassis of the "X-fifth" is actually a passenger car, with direct and indirect borrowing from the then Bavarian "five" and "seven". On a flat high-speed road, the car stands, like a glove, perfectly “writes” turns and brakes, as few people from the crossover-jeep fraternity still know how. In a word, it is an almost perfect example of good, and at the same time absolutely light, handling. The very same hodovka suffering off-road in the conditions of the city / highway lives well for years, requiring no investment and delivering a daily dose of buzz to the owner.

***

Yes, the BMW X5 E53, like the couple of generations that followed them, as well as those developing the idea of “X-sixths”, are not cars for the provinces at all. They are made for megacities with their relatively good roads. They imply rare trips to the country for their own pleasure, in order to prove to myself that "I can do it anyway." And in this sense, these are completely unique cars. One of them, you will almost certainly want to possess sooner or later. If you are thinking about buying a used X, read our detailed material on choosing a BMW X5 E53 and know: whichever version you choose, owning it will not be particularly cheap in any case.

BMW X5 is a popular car that many people dream of. Today, the secondary market is simply overflowing with offers for the sale of the legendary first-generation crossover - the E53 series. The price tags are far from transcendental, but finding a "live" copy is a huge problem! In the world of car enthusiasts, there is an opinion that the BMW X5 is a problem car and requires a lot of investment. Is this so, let's try to figure it out.

The first X5 was presented in 1999. In the same year, sales began in the United States. A year later, the BMW X5 was sold in Europe. In 2003, the design of the front end and the engine line were updated. At the end of 2006, the E53 was replaced by a new generation of BMW - X5 E70. The BMW X5 was assembled in the USA, Spartanburg, South Carolina for all automotive markets.

Engines

Initially, the E53 was offered with two gasoline engines: an inline 3-liter "six" M54, with a capacity of 231 hp. and V-shaped "eight" M62 with a working volume of 4.4 liters with a return of 286 hp. In 2001, the line of engines was replenished with a 3-liter 6-cylinder M57 / 184 hp diesel engine. and an 8-cylinder V-shaped petrol engine of 4.6 l / 347 hp. After restyling in 2003, the following were replaced: a 3-liter diesel engine with a more powerful 218 hp, and a 4.4-liter gasoline engine with an N62 / 320 hp. The 4.6is was replaced by the 4.8is, which develops 360 hp.

The most widely used gasoline 3-liter aspirated. This motor is considered to be very reliable and unpretentious. Its resource before the first possible problems is more than 250-300 thousand km. Gasoline engines with a working volume of 4.4 liters and above often sin by turning the liners and the appearance of scoring on the cylinder walls with a mileage of more than 200-250 thousand km. On engines with a capacity of 3.0 liters, such problems are rare, but sometimes they occur. Overhaul of a faulty engine will require about 100-150 thousand rubles. But you can find a "used" motor for 80-120 thousand rubles. The work on replacing a faulty unit is estimated by services at 20-30 thousand rubles. Some technicians can seal the damaged cylinder, which significantly reduces repair costs.

All gasoline units have a number of common problems. One of them is the crankcase ventilation valve. Over time, the channels for removing the crankcase gases become clogged, and the accumulating condensate freezes in the winter, which leads to the closure of the channel and squeezing out the oil through the dipstick. Failure to detect a malfunction can lead to engine oil starvation. Later, the tubes of the channels received a heat-insulating coating, but this revision did not completely eliminate the problem. Dealers sell a new valve for 6-8 thousand rubles, analogues are cheaper - about 4-5 thousand rubles. The way out is the regular replacement of the valve with tubes.

The category of consumables includes the coolant reservoir cap. A valve built into the lid is responsible for maintaining the operating pressure in the cooling system. The valve does not last forever. Its jamming in the summer heat can cause the expansion tank to burst. Lack of fluid in the system leads to overheating of the motor. When replacing an already damaged expansion tank, it will not be superfluous to replace the thermostat of the automatic transmission, the plastic case of which begins to crumble with high mileage. The cost of a new thermostat is about 2,000 rubles.

After 200-250 thousand km, VANOS, a variable valve timing system, begins to make a noticeable noise. When starting a cold engine, a roar is heard, and the engine, after starting, diesel, and vibration appears.

Hydraulic lifters serve more than 250-300 thousand km. To replace them on an 8-cylinder engine will require about 20,000 rubles. At about the same time, it is necessary to replace the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, mass air flow, pump and thermostat.

Oil consumption begins to increase after 150-200 thousand kilometers. One of the reasons is the valve stem seals. The cost of purchasing new ones and work on their replacement will amount to about 15-20 thousand rubles. More often, services break the price up to 50-70 thousand rubles.

The catalytic converter of the exhaust gases ends after 150-200 thousand km. The exhaust of 3-liter BMW X5 engines from the USA is equipped with an additional catalyst purge system, the motor of which can fail when the vehicle is driven over 100-150 thousand km. If it fails, it is cheaper to throw out the "giblets" of the purge system and reflash the ECU under the Euro-2 toxicity standards.

On a BMW X5 with a mileage of more than 200-300 thousand km, it may be necessary to replace the fuel pump. The cost of the original is about 10 thousand rubles, the analog is cheaper - 5 thousand rubles. On vehicles with a diesel engine, the main pump may also fail.

Over time, the engine oil seals and crankcase gaskets and valve covers begin to "snot". The cost of the original rear crankshaft oil seal is about 1-1.5 thousand rubles, the analogue is 400-500 rubles, the cost of replacement work is estimated by dealers at 9-10 thousand rubles, non-specialized services at 4-5 thousand rubles.

Turbodiesel 3.0 liters in terms of reliability is one step lower than gasoline 3.0 liters, but higher than more powerful engines of 4.4 and 4.6 liters. A diesel turbine can live up to 150-200 thousand km. Repairing the turbocharger will require about 15-20 thousand rubles. The turbocharger is controlled by a pressure converter. Its resource is about 150-200 thousand km. Interruptions in engine operation can be caused by a failure of the boost pressure sensor or loss of tightness in the pipes leading to the intercooler.

Transmission

BMW X5 with 3-liter gasoline and diesel engines could be equipped with a manual transmission. Such cars are very rare, and the manual transmission is generally without serious problems.

The X5 of the first generation was equipped with automatic transmissions from GM (paired with 3-liter engines) and ZF (with engines of 4.4 liters and above). They live up to 250-300 thousand km. On versions of BMW with a 4.8 liter engine, due to its high traction and power characteristics, the resource of the box is significantly less. The first complaints are jolts when switching, more often when switching from 1st to 2nd and from 3rd to 4th. It is possible to "cure" the box in 9 out of 10 cases after replacing the set of solenoids and oil in the box. The cost of solenoids is about 15-20 thousand rubles. If, after replacing the solenoids, the kicks remain when switching from 3rd to 4th, it means that the clutches of the 3rd and 4th gears have worn out. They tend to be the most prone to wear and tear.

With a mileage of more than 250-300 thousand km, it may be necessary to replace the torque converter. The cost of a new "donut" is about 25-30 thousand rubles, its bulkhead and repair is cheaper - about 5-8 thousand rubles. On a GM box, the oil pump may die. It will not be possible to replace them with new ones - they are not released, but you can pick up used ones. Often, the hoses connecting the box to the radiator begin to leak.

After 200-250 thousand km, the first problems with the transfer case appear. As a rule, this is a stretched chain that begins to crack. It is not worth pulling with replacement, otherwise the splines of the propeller shaft will begin to wear out. The original chain costs about 15,000 rubles, the analog is available for 7-8 thousand rubles. The work on replacing the chain will require about 5,000 rubles. If, after stopping the engine, after 2-3 seconds, clicks begin to be heard under the bottom of the car, it means that it is the turn of the transfer case servo. The new distribution will cost 35-45 thousand rubles.

The front gearbox fails more often on the diesel X5. The gearbox is not repairable, a used one will cost 15-25 thousand rubles.

Over time, backlashes appear in the cardan shafts. A sign of backlash is jerking when switching gearbox modes from "D" to "P". Replacing one crosspiece with work will require about 5,000 rubles. The front propeller shaft costs about 15-19 thousand rubles, about 2-3 thousand rubles will be asked for work on its replacement.

Front drives often fail. A set of new drives will cost 20-25 thousand rubles. An external CV joint assembly will require about 8-10 thousand rubles. The original anthers of the external CV joint cost about 2,000 rubles, analogs - about 400-500 rubles. Front wheel bearings run more than 150-200 thousand km.

Undercarriage

BMW E53 was equipped with a conventional or air suspension. The latter could be complete or only on the rear axle. The resource of the air bags is about 150-200 thousand km. The main reason for the failure of the pillows is wear as a result of the ingress of road dirt. Thorough cleaning of pneumatic elements significantly prolongs their life. Front air suspension struts change only as an assembly. The cost of the racks is about 25-30 thousand rubles. Rear airbags are changed separately from the struts. The cost of the pillow is about 8 thousand rubles. The weak points of the air suspension are the receiver valve block costing about 12 thousand rubles, body position sensors, which are often buggy (more often in winter) - 3-4 thousand rubles. Less often the suspension control unit fails - 25-30 thousand rubles. Conventional shock absorbers cost 6-10 thousand rubles.

The suspension arms travel more than 100-150 thousand km. After replacement, their resource rarely exceeds 50-100 thousand km. The rear wheels become a "house" due to wear of the transverse upper arms, floating hinges or silent blocks of the lower H-shaped arms. A complete bulkhead of the BMW X5 suspension will require about 40 thousand rubles.

Steering rack play is not common. When you turn the steering wheel, rubber squeaks may appear. The source of the sound is the steering shaft gimbals; after being treated with silicone grease, the creak goes away. Over time, the cardan of the lower section of the steering shaft begins to knock. The steering shaft assembly costs about 19-20 thousand rubles.

ABS sensors can fail when they have driven more than 250-300 thousand km. The cost of one sensor is about 4-6 thousand rubles. The ABS unit rarely fails, its replacement will require about 30,000 rubles. With a mileage of more than 200-250 thousand km, the front brake hoses often break.

Body and interior

The X5 body iron is strong and corrosion resistant. Thick and strong paintwork withstands aggressive environmental influences. On older cars, chips appear on the hood and front bumper, and the radiator grille also suffers. On cars over 10 years old, the glazing of the headlights becomes quite cloudy, and the first traces of corrosion may appear on the bottom of the side doors under the seal.

On the older BMW X5, the side mirror drive fails. The cost of restoration is about 1.5 thousand rubles. In cold weather, the outer door handle often breaks when trying to open a door with a "grabbed" lock (more often after washing). The reason is the destruction of the fragile frame of the handle made of silumin. The original frame costs about 3-5 thousand rubles, the analog - about 1.5 thousand rubles. As a preventive measure, we recommend seasonal treatment of the lock mechanism with a silicone-based compound.

Panoramic sunroofs often stop functioning. The reason is the skew and breakage of the rear sash. In addition, due to wear on the guide of the panoramic sunroof, it begins to knock. And due to the clogged drainage of the hatch, water can enter the cabin. Soon there are problems with the glass lifting mechanism. This is due to the guides, cable and drive motor.

Over time, the contacts on the tailgate strip rot away, due to which the number illumination and the trunk opening button stop working. A new plank assembly costs about 6-7 thousand rubles. But contacts can be easily soldered - the cost of work is no more than 1,000 rubles. Due to the oxidation of the contacts on the rear lamp board, problems with the lights appear. The solution is soldering or replacement.

The BMW X5 salon is very pleasing with its good quality and the absence of squeaks. But there are also negative aspects. For example, the fabric upholstery of the front pillars begins to peel off. Some people paste over the racks again or change them for new ones - about 2 thousand rubles per rack.

The absence of pixels on the dashboard display is treated by soldering the loop. An audio system malfunction is usually caused by a failure of the radio module or amplifier located in the trunk. New modules cost about 10-12 thousand rubles each, for the repair of the electrical unit they will ask for about 3-5 thousand rubles.

There are problems with the air conditioning fan (under the hood). A new fan costs about 12-15 thousand rubles. The high cost and the possibility of failure are due to the electrical control board integrated into the housing. The crackle from the climate unit on the central panel is emitted by the processor cooler on the board. You can silence the cooler by treating it with grease. The floating revolutions of the heater fan signal the need to replace the "hedgehog" - the switch of the heating system fan cascade. In addition, a faulty "hedgehog" in 2-3 days can discharge the battery.

The charge level of the battery is an important element in the operation of the BMW X5. A drop in the on-board voltage at the time of starting the engine often leads to glitches of various systems with the issuance of error information on the display.

The lack of charge current from the generator is most often caused by wear of the graphite brushes and bearings. Replacing the brushes will require about 1,000 rubles. A complete overhaul of the generator with replacement of bearings will cost 5 thousand rubles. A new generator costs about 10-12 thousand rubles.

Sometimes the LCM is buggy - the light and flashlight control unit, parking sensors (2-2.5 thousand rubles apiece), the DME unit (gives errors on the engine sensors) and the rain sensor.

Epilogue

The BMW X5 E53 series is not that difficult to operate. With a certain skill, knowledge and skills, it can be serviced independently, which will minimize operating costs. There is more than enough information on identifying and replacing faulty units on the Internet. There are many and quite high-quality substitutes for original spare parts. E53 has been studied up and down, and therefore it will not be necessary to “discover new planets” during repairs. Visiting official dealers will inevitably require large financial costs. And ordinary services, seeing a "dream car", often significantly increase the price of work. All this gives rise to the myth of the unusually expensive service of the Bavarian handsome. But you shouldn't buy a car with your last money. It is not easy to 100% determine the wear of a given specimen without full diagnostics. And in most cases, the BMW X5 was purchased with the last money, did not receive proper care and "annealed" to the fullest. Therefore, according to the experience of the owners of the first generation BMW X5, 100-150 thousand rubles in reserve will not even be superfluous for the first year or two of operation. After a series of small investments, BMW usually does not fail.

Produced from 1999 to 2006. It has shared its technology with the Range Rover, specifically the Hill Descent and Off Road Management Engine systems, as well as the BMW 5 Series E39 (engine and electronics).

The X5 AWD system distributes more than 60% of the engine's torque to the rear wheels.

In an effort to prepare the market for the launch of the second-generation X5, the company unveiled an updated version of the crossover in 2004.

External restyling touched the front and rear optics, the hood and the radiator grille was enlarged. In addition, the new model was equipped with an improved all-wheel drive system and launched the new 4.4i with a 315 horsepower engine.

In April 2004, the top 355 hp version, the 4.8is, was released.

In 2003, the luxury sports crossover BMW X5 E53 appeared in an updated form. Like the previous version, the restyled X5 first debuted in the North American market, where it was produced. With the cosmetic refinement of the design, the model also received numerous technical changes, including the modernization of the power unit and the introduction of the new xDrive all-wheel drive system. Among the external distinguishing features of the modernized BMW X5 are the new adaptive bi-xenon lighting technology with the so-called "angel eyes" (luminous rings around the headlights), a larger branded double grille and a more aggressive new bumper. There are new body colors, various additional options. The range of engines includes a new 4.4-liter petrol V8 (320 hp) and a 3.0-liter diesel inline-six with the Common Rail system (218 hp).

In the interior of the updated BMW X5 E53, a new steering wheel has appeared, in a four-spoke design or in a three-spoke sports performance. The instrument cluster has been updated. The front panel architecture, the location of the keys and buttons have not changed. The equipment added a servo-driven upper tailgate with a soft close function. Improved interior trim and seat upholstery including Dakota leather (standard on V8 models). For the updated crossover, the following were offered: a panoramic roof, a Bluetooth system, and electric rear seats. Automatic light control included as standard. As usual, the BMW X5 is equipped with many premium options, including an electrically adjustable steering column, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel and more.

The updated X5 in 2003 offers a new modification with a gasoline 4.4-liter V-shaped "eight" from the BMW 7-Series, the power of which reaches 320 horsepower (torque 440 Nm), as well as a new 3.0-liter turbodiesel with six located in a row of cylinders - it produces 218 "forces" and has a maximum torque of 500 Nm. The engines were mated to a new 6-speed automatic transmission or 6-speed "mechanics", depending on the modification. The 4.4i xDrive model reaches a top speed of 240 km / h, from zero to 100 km / h, the crossover accelerates in 7 seconds. The same parameters for the 3.0d xDrive model are 203 km / h and 8.3 seconds. Later, the range of the SUV was replenished with a sports modification 4.8si xDrive, equipped with a 4.8-liter V8 engine (360 hp, 500 Nm) - in this case, the "maximum speed" reached 246 km / h, and to accelerate to "hundreds" required 6.1 sec. Remained in the range and a modest gasoline inline "six" 3.0i (231 hp, 300 Nm), which boasts a slightly lower fuel consumption than the powerful V8 - 12.7 l / 100 km in the combined cycle against 13 , 1-13.5 l / 100 km. The diesel BMW X5 is even more economical: an average of 8.6-9.4 l / 100 km. The 93-liter fuel tank provides ample range with a single fill.

The crossover BMW X5 E53 shares many elements of the chassis design with the "five" E39. Both independent suspensions are mounted on separate subframes. An air suspension was offered that regulates the height of the ground clearance: in the standard it has a value of 203 mm. One of the important changes in the restyled E53 was the new xDrive all-wheel drive system - it became plug-in, using an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, while the xDrive system constantly analyzes the road situation and driving mode, and, if necessary, dynamically redistributes the engine torque between the axles. Body dimensions of the model: length 4667 mm, width 1872 mm, height 1707 mm. The wheelbase is 2820 mm, and the minimum turning radius is 6 m. The luggage compartment has a volume of 465 liters, the maximum volume with the rear seats folded is 1550 liters. A convenient solution is the upper and lower sections of the tailgate that open separately.

The first generation BMW X5 is equipped with six airbags, anti-lock braking system and electronic brake force distribution. The standard equipment also includes an electronic stability control system, an assistant when descending from a mountain, rear parking sensors, a rain sensor and other equipment. The body of the E53 meets stringent passive safety requirements - the vehicle has been highly rated in crash tests by the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Excellent appearance, good handling, luxurious comfortable interior are the main advantages of the BMW X5. This crossover may not have enough off-road performance, but for many fans of the model, this is not so important. And besides, the BMW X5 has always been one of the status cars. Today, the range of prices for used E53s is quite large, but you should not even consider suspiciously cheap options if the goal is to find a car in excellent technical condition, with a minimum number of owners and with an impeccable history. The latter is very important: after all, this car is one of the "champions" in terms of stealing. As for diseases and typical malfunctions, they are all well studied, but you should be prepared for expensive service.
