Cleaning the injector and throttle valve, or freshening the breath of the car. Cleaning the throttle valve. Choosing a cleaner Clean the throttle valve without removing it

Many car owners notice that over time, the car's speed begins to fluctuate, the engine starts poorly, some vibration appears at idle, the speed starts to freeze - all this can be associated with contamination of the throttle valve and its channels. Due to the adhering dirt, the damper begins to close poorly, jams, bites... STOP, where does the dirt come from???

The photo below shows dirty throttle valves of various car brands. Here it is that resinous, sandy, oily mud!

So, cars use a closed-type forced crankcase ventilation system to reduce emissions into the atmosphere. This means that during operation a small amount of oil and gas vapors fly from the engine crankcase from the combustion chamber, and also a small amount of dust passes through the air filter (especially a dirty one), and all this forms an oil-dust flow that settles on the walls of the intake manifold and throttle valve. Over time, this plaque only accumulates. There are other factors that influence throttle valve contamination, but we will focus on the fact that on every car, sooner or later this unit becomes dirty, and there is no escape from it. Therefore, just like any car undergoes scheduled maintenance, the throttle valve needs periodic maintenance.

Well? Are we cleaning? Of course we clean! With what?

We clean with a brush, a brush, do not spare the cleaner, blow with compressed air...

Well, okay, we cleaned everything, blew it out, dried it, tightened it, installed it and... DID NOT forget to check the air filter? Usually, if the throttle is very dirty, then the air filter is also in poor condition. Be sure to check the filter to make sure it doesn’t look like the one in the pictures below.

Well, okay, the filter was replaced, all the clamps were tightened, we looked at everything again to make sure that all the sensors were connected, all the hoses were connected. Are we launching? Drin-drin-drin.... it started, we are happy :) we look at the speed, it stays at 2000.... a few seconds passed - it holds, what is it? What's happened? Is something not connected? Perhaps, but as a rule we have not adapted (trained) a clean throttle, because... the damper was dirty, then the computer set a certain position of the damper (this applies only to the electronic damper) or the position of the idle air control (for a mechanical damper). We cleaned the electronic throttle valve on a Nissan car (pictured), which after cleaning must be adapted, that is, set the speed corresponding to idle speed - 600...750 revolutions. For this purpose, special diagnostic devices are usually used to carry out adaptation and reset training parameters, but training can be carried out manually. To adapt you will need to arm yourself with a stopwatch and patience :)

So, we are learning the throttle from the Nissan Serena. We warm up the engine to operating temperature (about 90 degrees), turn off the ignition - the engine stalls. We wait a few seconds and begin the learning procedure:

turn on the ignition, wait 3 seconds... one, two, three. Press the gas pedal all the way 5 times and release (this needs to be done quickly and within 5 seconds). You need to press at intervals of 1 time per second, so as not to lose the rhythm and not stretch out the time. Be sure to use a stopwatch for this. Next, wait 7 seconds and press the gas pedal all the way and hold it until the CHECK ENGINE light on the instrument panel starts blinking and then turns on continuously. When the CHECK ENGINE light starts to light up constantly, wait 3 seconds and release the gas pedal. We start the engine, the speed should drop to the idle speed we need. In this adaptation procedure, it is very important to maintain all time intervals, then the adaptation will be successful.

Video. We adapt the throttle valve with our own hands

Adapted? Are the revs normal? For us, yes, but if you cleaned the throttle valve on a Mitsubishi Lancer 4G18, then it’s not so simple. Especially if you tried very hard and washed off the molybdenum paint, which is applied from the factory around the perimeter of the throttle valve “heel”. Paint called " Molykote D321R Anti-Friction Coating". If anyone is interested, HERE is a link to the manufacturer. And below is a damper with this coating.

But washed-off paint is not as scary as the fact that on this type of engine the throttle valve “patch” wears out very badly over time. The damper constantly opens and closes, and the dirt at the end of the heel of the damper acts like sandpaper, and after cleaning a gap can form, the so-called “work-out” (see below).

What happens to the engine in this case? How does the electronic engine control unit react to such a large gap in the throttle body? Let's figure it out.

Correct adjustment of XX.

The photo above shows the normal operation of the idle speed control. Through the throttle 1. in the closed position, a minimum amount of air usually passes through (air flow through the damper 2. ), the gap between the throttle valve and the walls in the closed position is minimal, but still there. There is a special coefficient of air flow through the throttle; it takes into account the amount of air passing through a closed damper when regulating idle speed. Idle speed control 4. with minimal leakage, the pump sets a certain step (rod position 5. relative to the bypass channel 3. ) so that the idle speed is in the region of 600...750 revolutions (each engine is different), the number of steps is usually 20...40 steps.

The fewer steps the idle speed control sets 4. , the more the rod extends and closes bypass channel (little air passes through the channel). At zero pitch, no air flows at all. The more steps, the larger the stock opens the bypass channel and more air passes through.

In our case, rice 11. To maintain 750 rpm, the ECU (electronic control unit) set the idle speed control position to 20 steps (+/- several steps) on a warm engine - this corresponds to normal idle speed maintenance. In the parameters on the Mitsubishi Lancer this indicator is indicated as - ISC STEP.MTR 20STEP.

ISC is an abbreviation for Idle Speed Control Motor, i.e. in Russian “idle speed controller”, this is what this controller looks like! Photo below:)

In fact, it may look different on different cars, the main thing is that it performs the same function for all - maintaining and adjusting idle speed.

Video. Checking the idle air control yourself using the example of Toyota

But we have moved a little away from the topic, let's return to our discussion and look at the following figure 12. Let's imagine what will happen if through our throttle valve 1. more air will begin to pass through, that is, the gap between the throttle valve and the walls will become larger, resulting in air leakage 2. through the damper 1. will increase. If more air begins to flow through, then the idle speed will increase from 750 to.... for example, 1000 revolutions.

The engine control unit will begin to react to such a change and will try to set the speed corresponding to idle speed. It will send a command to the idle speed controller 4. reduce the number of steps by such a value that the revolutions become equal to 750. Let’s say from 20 steps he reduced this value to 5 and our revolutions returned to normal. But what happens if the gap between the throttle valve and the walls becomes so large that the regulator 4., completely closing the bypass channel 3., will not be able to achieve the speed we need. Let's imagine that by setting "0" steps ( ISC STEP.MTR 0STEP- this indicator corresponds to a completely closed bypass channel, in Fig. 12 this is shown with a red cross) the idle speed has not returned to normal and is 1000 revolutions, how will the engine ECU react then? Of course, the control unit will understand that the idle speed controller is not doing its job and will generate an error in the idle speed control system. In this case P0505- Idle Control System Malfunction. Many people seeing this error condemn the regulator to replacement. This may be the reason, but in this case it is not so, let’s look at the picture below.

Malfunction in the XX control system.

What to do in such a situation? The only thing that will help here is replacing the entire throttle block, or replacing the “patch” of the throttle valve (photo below).

So, we figured out how to clean the throttle valve on Nissan and Lancer. But what if we cleaned the electronic throttle valve on a Toyota Avensis and the rpm after cleaning still remains at around 2000, what then? If we don’t have a diagnostic tool for adaptation at hand, then we arm ourselves with a 10 key and unscrew the negative terminal of the battery for 10...15 seconds. After this action, the adaptation is reset, the learning parameters are reset to the factory settings, and after starting the engine, the speed returns to normal. The throttle valve shines and sparkles, delighting its owner :) But such a procedure, alas, does not work on all cars.

If you doubt that you can clean the throttle valve yourself, taking into account the characteristics of your car, then it is better to entrust this procedure to service center specialists who have extensive experience in this field.

With active and long-term use of the car, the throttle assembly requires regular cleaning. Under the influence of small particles of dust and dirt, the correct operation of the unit is disrupted, which significantly reduces engine productivity. The throttle body must be cleaned regularly to maintain proper vehicle operation. Manufacturers recommend cleaning every half hundred thousand kilometers. To improve the operation of the unit, preventive maintenance should also be carried out regularly.

Throttle valve, signs of contamination.

— The car engine has difficulty reducing speed. If, instead of gradually reducing torque, the engine suddenly slows down, one possible reason is that the throttle valve is dirty. As a rule, heavy contamination can cause the engine to malfunction. If the car stalls with a characteristic sound, you need to pay attention to the condition of the throttle assembly.

— If the car has problems starting with a cold engine, this may also indicate that the unit in question is clogged. If it is heavily soiled, the engine may have difficulty starting even when warm. If you open the throttle yourself, the engine restores speed. Thus, we can conclude that the node is not working properly. The problem may lie in the carburetor, but to identify the causes of the malfunction, it is necessary to diagnose the remote control.

The main causes of clogging of the remote control.

During vehicle operation, a large amount of dust-laden air passes through the air filter. A mixture of dust and oil coming from the ventilation system gradually settles on the surface of the working elements. In the area of the throttle assembly, there is always a strong air flow. Thus, the remote control is gradually covered with oily dirt. The mixture of dust and oil is quite sticky and is securely held on the surface of the working element, interfering with the proper operation of the entire system. The throttle valve is one of the most important elements of a car's intake system. This device is responsible for supplying air flow to the intake manifold.

Throttle valve, important operating features.

Regular maintenance and compliance with operating requirements can significantly increase the life of the unit. In most modern cars, subject to the necessary rules, the remote control does not require much attention. The throttle valve unit rarely malfunctions. More often, the element simply needs to be cleaned of accumulated dirt. Like any car part, the damper requires certain operating rules and timely maintenance. The cleaning procedure is not complicated and can be done by every car enthusiast. In this way, material and time costs can be significantly reduced. Carrying out the procedure yourself, you will remain confident in the quality of the work performed. The operation does not require special skills. All you need is patience, the necessary tools and carefully follow the instructions. With enough desire, you can easily achieve the desired results. Let's determine the exact factors indicating the need to clean the remote control:

  • Instability of idle speed.
  • Problematic starting of a cold or hot engine.
  • At low speeds, the car begins to randomly pull out or brake.

The indicated behavior of the car may indicate not only a malfunction of the throttle. A likely cause may also be a breakdown of the engine or sensors.

If, after cleaning the remote control, the idle torque remains the same or increases sharply, the cause may be a complete failure of the unit. In this case, you should entrust the diagnosis to professionals. Most likely, the unit requires extensive repairs or complete replacement. It is possible to identify the exact cause of a malfunction only using expensive equipment and appropriate skills. To carry out the procedure, you will need modern computer equipment, which is unlikely to be lying around in a car enthusiast’s garage.

Most car enthusiasts know that the throttle valve becomes clogged after a mileage of 50 thousand kilometers. Modern cars are able to withstand the load a little longer. But, as you know, there are no eternal car parts. Russian roads are not the most pleasant conditions for a car, so it is worth carrying out regular maintenance. The fact is that the remote control is very sensitive to external stimuli and is not equipped with a limiter. When we press the fuel mixture pedal, the throttle valve rubs against the body. Thus, it is gradually disabled. The service life of the damper may vary depending on the operating conditions of the vehicle and the manufacturer. When servicing the mechanism in question and the vehicle as a whole =, you should use the included instructions. It is worth remembering that each car has its own technical features and requires special attention. However, the unit devices and the cleaning process are similar.

Throttle valve, repair instructions.

In order to save money, you can bypass replacing the old mechanism. To do this, it is necessary to completely restore the correct operation of the node. The restoration process will help save the car owner a significant amount of money.

The procedure can be found in the instructions provided. The acquired knowledge and skills will be useful to the owner of the car, and the result may pleasantly surprise the user.

Carrying out repairs.

  • To sharpen the valve, you will need the appropriate equipment. It is necessary to sharpen the damper body to the point specified in the included instructions. On modern cars from a foreign manufacturer, the figure is fifty and a half millimeters.
  • Using brass, we make a part similar to the factory one.
  • To increase the service life of the unit, it carries out heat treatment of parts.
  • In order to eliminate damper friction, which accelerates wear, we install a sealed bearing.
  • After carrying out the work, we restore the unit and adjust the idle air control.

Stages of cleaning.

The frequency of cleaning the unit is specified by the manufacturer. Under extreme operating conditions, the frequency of unit maintenance may increase. The cleaning process is accompanied by idle speed adjustment.

Order of conduct:

  • Remove the flow diversion hose from the throttle.
  • The prepared rags must be moistened with detergent. It is important to prevent liquid from entering the sensor surfaces.
  • We remove accumulated dirt from the surface of the valve and the entire assembly. The procedure must be carried out carefully and carefully, without damaging the protective layer of the metal.
  • We install the conductor in its original position and adjust the idle speed.
  • As a cleaning agent, it is recommended to use a carburetor cleaning mixture.

The electronic throttle valve has its own characteristic features that should be taken into account when servicing the unit.

By observing all the operating requirements of the device and regularly carrying out preventive maintenance, you can increase the life of the vehicle. The throttle is an important component in the functioning of a car engine. An incorrect mixture of fuel and air can quickly damage a vehicle. If malfunctions occur, it is necessary to promptly clean the remote control. If the faults are not resolved, it is necessary to carry out professional diagnostics of the mechanism. When carrying out work, strictly follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Remember safety requirements and use only working tools. By regularly servicing your car yourself, you will gain useful skills and experience that may be needed at any moment. Good luck in servicing your favorite car!

The throttle valve regulates the flow of air into the engine intake manifold in accordance with the force applied to the gas pedal. For normal operation of the engine, a strictly defined volume of air and fuel is required in each specific mode and at a given speed. A lean or enriched mixture leads to increased fuel consumption, unstable engine operation, and difficulties starting the engine. Incorrect air supply can be caused by malfunctions of the intake manifold and the duct as a whole, but component contamination is more common. Therefore, it is necessary first of all to check and clean the engine throttle valve.

Why clean

The air mixture supplied to the intake tract of a car engine is needed for efficient combustion of fuel in the chamber. If there is not enough air or its volume does not correspond to that required for a given engine operating mode, then the fuel-air mixture will be burned less efficiently. This leads to unstable engine operation, a drop in power, and an increase in fuel consumption.

Prolonged operation of the machine with a contaminated damper can also lead to damage to engine parts.

The elements of the cylinder-piston group of the combustion chamber are designed to work with a certain volume and composition of the fuel-air mixture.

What causes pollution?

Among the main causes of pollution are the following:

  • Operating a vehicle using low-quality fuel. Low quality gasoline with a large amount of sediment and impurities is one of the reasons for the formation of contaminants in the throttle assembly.
  • Dirt entering through the air supply system. Dust and dirt settling on the parts of the throttle assembly enter the intake tract through a dirty air filter or an air duct with a broken seal. It is recommended to change the air filter in accordance with the manufacturer's regulations (maintenance).
  • Fuel filter is dirty. A fuel filter, unlike an oil or air filter, needs to be replaced much less frequently, but this does not mean that it is less dirty and does not pose a threat to engine parts. Dirt from it can also get onto the damper.

Precipitation in the form of oil dust from crankcase gases is also dangerous. Oil with dirt and dust on the valve is formed due to crankcase gases, which usually enter through the valve cover.

Main signs of pollution

The following signs indicate the need for cleaning:

  • Difficulty starting the engine.
  • Unstable engine operation (engine stalls while driving).
  • Uneven engine idle speed (speed “floats” at idle).
  • “Stuck” or drop in speed.

How to clean

Every specialist in a specialized car service knows how to properly clean the throttle valve, but not every car owner. But it is recommended to perform this procedure at least 30-50 thousand kilometers - depending on the quality of the fuel used, the condition of the filters and systems.

You can clean the throttle valve without removing the valve or by removing the part. In the first case, an intake valve cleaner is used. First, the air duct is dismantled, after which, with the damper closed, the product, which is usually released in the form of an aerosol, is applied to the surface of the part. Dirt and oil accumulations are removed with a soft cloth. Next, you need to open the damper (press the gas pedal all the way) and remove dirt from the side surfaces and channels. The procedure is performed several times.

Please note that partial cleaning, as well as washing the injectors without removing them, will not completely remove all contaminants from the part. Therefore, it is better to carry out the procedure with removing the throttle.

Complete cleaning

Complete cleaning of dirt and carbon deposits is only possible when the device is removed. The correct way to dismantle the unit is as follows:

  1. Disconnect the air duct.
  2. Remove the damper by unscrewing the bolts and disconnecting the connectors.
  3. Using a carburetor cleaner or a special compound for throttle valves, use a soft cloth to thoroughly wipe the part inside and out.
  4. Repeat the cleaning procedure several times, avoiding strong mechanical impact, which can lead to removal of the protective coating of the metal, damage to the damper itself and its position sensor.
  5. After cleaning the throttle, reassemble the entire air supply system assembly in the reverse order.
  6. “Train” the damper after installation by setting the idle speed to the required (factory) value.

How to clean the throttle position sensor

Contamination can also get onto the position sensor. Due to sensor malfunction, loss or poor contact, the information received by the vehicle's ECU about the position of the part will be incorrect. As a result, the engine will not gain speed - or, more dangerously, the throttle will open completely while driving, which will lead to an increase in speed instead of braking.

Use a liquid and a soft cloth to remove dirt and oil deposits from the sensor without using excessive force.

How much does cleaning cost at a car service center?

When cleaning yourself, the costs depend only on the cost of the selected liquid. As a rule, this amount is around 100-500 rubles, depending on the manufacturer and store.

The technician will tell you how much it costs to clean the throttle valve at a service center after preliminary diagnostics. Remember that the appearance of signs of contamination does not mean that only cleaning is required - there may be malfunctions of the air and fuel supply unit. Therefore, it is impossible to give an exact price without checking.

You can clean the car engine damper yourself, but if you do not have special skills, it is definitely better to contact the experts at a specialized car service center. In this case, you will definitely save time and will not be afraid of damage to the elements of the injection system, which you can cause by unqualified actions.

The throttle valve is needed to supply air to the engine intake manifold. The second function is to control the volume of the air mixture. After a certain period of operation, it becomes clogged, which reduces the efficiency of the power unit. To solve this problem you need clean the throttle valve what you can do yourself.

Signs of contamination

The main signs of deposit formation are changes in engine operation. However, this may not always be due to contamination. Sometimes the problem is caused by a sensor malfunction, drive failures, or incorrect settings of the on-board computer parameters. Diagnosis is needed to identify the exact causes. Often, improper throttle operation occurs due to two or more reasons.

Signs of clogging:

  • There is no stable operation of the engine at idle speed, it stalls.
  • The startup time of the power unit increases.
  • At speeds up to 20 km/h, the car jerks when pressing the accelerator pedal.
  • Dips in speed, up to a complete stop of work.

You need to visually inspect the damper. If there are no oil stains or coked build-up, the reason for the incorrect functioning is not due to contamination. You need to do a full diagnosis.

Causes of clogging

The formation of a build-up on the surface of the valve is an inevitable process. Its reason is the removal of crankcase gases, which is necessary for the normal operation of the lubrication system. As a result, some of the oil gets onto the throttle valve. Due to high temperatures, the oil layer hardens and gradually thickens.

An additional factor is that gas combustion products settle on the oil layer. A coked build-up forms. It is impossible to reduce their influence; it is recommended to use good quality oil with a minimum content of third-party impurities. You should also observe the frequency of its replacement.

Incorrect operation of the air filter is also one of the causes of clogging. Some dust and other elements enter the system. This leads to accelerated formation of a layer on the throttle valve. The solution is to monitor the condition of the air filter, change it taking into account the manufacturer’s recommendations and actual operating conditions.

Self-cleaning the throttle valve

The valve can be cleaned without taking off it, but only as a preventative measure. This will not help remove all contaminants, since there will not be full access to the unit. After stopping the engine, you need to wait 1-1.5 hours. Then remove the air duct. The throttle valve is in the closed position. A cleaner is applied to its surface. After it has dried, open the valve manually and process the internal elements.

How often to clean, depends on operating conditions. Dirt removal without dismantling is done every 5-7 thousand km. mileage With dismantling - 30-50 thousand km. But these are conditional indicators, the frequency is determined by the owner of the car after a visual inspection and the appearance of signs of contamination.

Removal

Before removing the throttle valve, check that the engine is cool. Otherwise, there is a risk of burns. Carry out work in a well-lit place. This is necessary for convenient disconnection of external components.

Procedure.

  1. Remove the air duct corrugation.
  2. Disconnecting the idle circuit wires.
  3. Disconnect the throttle position sensor.
  4. Disconnect the hoses. It is advisable to plug their pipes, for example, with spark plugs.
  5. Removing the unit. To do this, you need to unscrew 2 or 4 bolts. If the thread does not feed well, treat it with lubricant.

You need to remember the dismantling order so that after the work there are no installation difficulties. Fold the individual elements.

Cleaning and installation

It is not recommended to use a container to completely immerse the unit. There are aerosol-type products that can treat the outer and inner surface of the throttle valve. Work is performed on a table or any other flat surface with good lighting. The room is ventilated, the temperature should not be lower than +5°C.

Cleaning stages.

  1. Treat the outer and inner surfaces.
  2. Check for dirt and build-up.
  3. Mechanical treatment only with dry rags.
  4. If necessary, repeat cleaning, waiting until the surface has completely dried.

Pay attention to the condition of the crankcase ventilation channel and the location of the needle. This is where dirt accumulates the most. Additionally, clean the idle air regulator. If the condition of these elements is unsatisfactory, there is play in the needle movement, the entire unit needs to be replaced.

Before reinstallation, the condition of the gasket is checked. It should not have ruptures or deformations. It is advisable to replace it with a new one. Installation is carried out in the reverse order, checking the reliability of fastening of the connections.

Facilities

Special products are used to remove dirt and build-up. They are aerosol type, sold in cans. Conventionally divided into specialized and universal. The latter can be used to clean carburetors and other car components.

Review of funds, how to clean it throttle valve at home:

  • Johnsen 4720. Effectively cleans contaminated surfaces. The advantage is a convenient valve, with which you can perform treatment in hard-to-reach places.
  • Hi-Gear. The composition includes anti-corrosion and lubricating components. They do not have a negative effect on the sensitive elements of the unit - oxygen sensor, flexible pipes. However, the manufacturer does not always use a high-quality spray can.
  • ZM 08867. Belongs to the category of universal products. One area of application is carburetor cleaning. The advantage is that it contains catalytic converters.
  • Mag 1 414. Effectively removes deposits; in addition to this function, it can neutralize organic plaque. Feature: large capacity.
  • LIQUI MOLY DrosselKlappen-Reiniger (LM-5111). The manufacturer has developed a composition for cleaning the throttle valve from all types of contaminants.
  • Mannol Carburetor Cleaner. Belongs to the category of universal means.
  • ABRO Carb&Choke Cleaner (CC-220). Allows you to remove all types of plaque and growths on the surface. The disadvantage is the small capacity of the can (220 ml).

The use of compounds not intended for this work can lead to damage to internal elements. Sometimes the above products are replaced with WD-40, acetone or other solvents. The danger lies in the possible negative impact on sensors and other sensitive components of the unit.

Possible mistakes

The first attempts to clean the throttle valve do not always lead to the desired result. In some cases, they can impair the performance of that machine component. The solution is to order a service from a specialized service or study the entire process in detail and choose the right, effective means.

Possible errors when performing cleaning:

  • Processing frequency is not observed. Frequent impacts may disrupt the operation of the damper.
  • Using rough rags or brushes will damage the surface.
  • Removing the molybdenum layer, which is necessary to reduce air flow resistance. The layer is often confused with an oil coating.
  • Throttle valve training is not carried out. This is necessary to set the idle speed.
  • After 30-40 thousand km. mileage cleaning is carried out only with dismantling.

To effectively remove dirt and deposits, you need to properly dismantle the unit, select the optimal composition and carry out work with minimal physical impact on the surface. The result of this will be long-lasting operation of the throttle valve and the entire vehicle.

The serviceability of the throttle assembly is an important component of the correct operation of the ignition system of a gasoline internal combustion engine. In domestic use, cleaning the throttle body is an essential part of car care.

Purpose

It is through the throttle assembly that the air supply to the intake manifold is regulated. The desire to increase engine efficiency leads to the fact that modern cars are “stuffed” with electronics. Even the mechanically driven system (the throttle is connected to a cable coming from the accelerator pedal) is a monoblock with a built-in idle speed control, as well as a throttle position sensor.

What can we say about an electrically driven system, where the damper moves at the command of signals received from pedal position sensors.

Additionally, the monoblock includes: coolant circulation pipes, crankcase ventilation systems, as well as pipes for the gasoline vapor recovery system.

Since all sensor signals are processed by the ECU and directly affect the correct operation of the internal combustion engine, the state of the unit must correspond to the calculated parameters. Cleaning the throttle body helps remove deposits that inevitably accumulate on the walls of the channels.

Impact of sediments

There are only a few factors to blame for soot on the walls:

  • crankcase ventilation used to reduce the toxicity of exhaust gases. During operation, a mixture of oxidized motor oil with combustion product residues inevitably enters the ventilation system, which settles on the walls;
  • dust that the air filter did not retain (the situation is especially aggravated by, frankly, dirty filter elements). These particles settle on the layer of settled crankcase gases, forming a dense soot.

It is necessary to clean the throttle valve from this type of contamination. Otherwise, deposits not only impede the air supply, causing turbulence, but also clog the IAC. There is also incomplete closure of the damper, which leads to the entry of “excess” air.

Symptoms of a dirty throttle body

The problem under discussion is convenient in that the engine itself will “tell” the time when the throttle valve needs to be cleaned. The main symptoms include:

  • poor engine starting;
  • The internal combustion engine does not idle;
  • the car jerks at low speed (up to 15-20 km/h and light pressure on the pedal).

How to dismantle

Obviously, before cleaning the throttle valve, the assembly must be dismantled.

It is worth noting that the option of removing contaminants without removal also exists. This method can only be used in urgent cases, since it will not be possible to properly remove carbon deposits in this way.

The incoming air distribution unit is located between the intake manifold and the air filter. For all cars, the removal process will be approximately the same and consists of the following operations:

Cleaning process

You can clean the throttle body using aerosols known as "carb cleaners" or carburetor cleaners. They are inexpensive, but thanks to the mixture of solvents they do an excellent job of removing stuck carbon deposits. It is recommended to first remove the rubber seals in order to protect them from exposure to chemical reagents.

Cleaning occurs in several stages:

  1. We abundantly water the internal cavity, as well as the channels for the supply of additional air;
  2. wait 5 minutes, and then repeat the procedure until the carbon deposits are completely removed.

The same method can be used to remove carbon deposits from the IAC. It is strongly recommended not to use lint brushes or rough cloth. The internal cavity of the damper is often coated with a layer of molybdenum, which makes the surface smooth, providing better airflow.

Setting up the IAC and the damper itself

After installing a new gasket and installing the equipment in the reverse order of removal, the engine may continue to run rough.

Mechanical system

Cleaning a mechanically controlled throttle valve requires adjusting the IAC:

  • remove the battery terminal for 15 minutes;
  • connect the battery, start the car and let the internal combustion engine idle without turning on additional consumers (10 minutes);
  • turn off the engine for 10 seconds, and then start it again and warm up to operating temperature;
  • even if the instability of the twentieth century remains, in the next 100-150 km everything should return to normal.

Electrical system

  • after warming up the car to operating temperature, turn off the engine for 10 seconds;
  • leave the ignition on for 3 s;
  • after this, press the gas pedal 5 times within 5 seconds;
  • after 7 seconds, press the gas pedal all the way, waiting until the “check engine” indicator starts to light constantly;
  • after 3 seconds of constant lighting of the indicator, release the gas pedal;
  • we start the engine.

Intervals of manipulations must be strictly maintained.
