Toyo Tipes winter tires have been produced by the concern of the same name since the middle of the twentieth century. The company was born in the Japanese city of Osako. Today this company is engaged not only in the production of tires, but also in automotive components, petrochemical products.

The company has an excellent material and technical base for the development of first-class tires, including proving grounds for tire testing. The management of the concern uses all methods for advertising and promotion, so Toyo models can be seen at annual rallies, as well as other automobile competitions. Thanks to these participations, specialists have the opportunity to track the technical characteristics of tires in action, as well as use them for subsequent development.

In 2008, a representative office of Toyo appeared in Russia with the aim of strengthening international relations, as well as promoting products in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.

The company's specialists pay special attention to the development of tires for winter. It took many years to create a special rubber mixture with the addition of silicon dioxide, due to which Toyo winter tires have become more practical, frost-resistant, reliable, and narrow sipes make the grip stronger. According to the owners, Toyo Observer is the best model of winter tires for Toyota Camry.

Description of popular models

Winter is one of the most difficult times of the year for motorists, especially in our country. The temperature regime for the last few years has been poor. The weather "jumps", which is why there are sharp changes - from severe frosts to thaws. In such difficult conditions, Toyo's winter tires show very good performance when driving on a winter road.

The Toyo company produces two modifications of winter tires:

  • Toyo observe g 3 ice;
  • Toyo observe gsi 5.

In the process of creating a rubber base, a special technology was applied, in which a natural material was added to the rubber mixture - crushed walnut shells. Thanks to this component, the tires have a high level of grip on the snow-covered road, since the shell particles attract the snow and bite into it with force. Both modifications are available, both studded and non-studded. Top sizes are available from r15 to 22. The most running - radius 16. Buy winter tires Toyo 205 55 r16 in Moscow from 4200 rubles.

The composition of the rubber compound Toyo observe gsi 5 includes a special absorbent substance that does not allow moisture to interfere with movement, which makes the car confidently heading to its destination on a wet track. Reviews characterize Toyo observe gsi 5 winter tires positively, noting its high driving performance, low noise level, as well as excellent traction.

Winter tires Toyo observe g 3 ice, judging by the reviews, perfectly holds the track due to the special location of the grooves in the tread pattern. To develop the sketch, a special computer technology was used, which made it possible to accurately distribute the location of the studs, which most favorably affected the noise insulation qualities and the level of grip.

Advantages and disadvantages

Following the owners' reviews of Toyo winter tires, the advantages of the model include:

  • excellent grip in any weather;
  • tires are safe while driving due to inclusions of walnut shells;
  • high noise insulating properties.

The disadvantages include:

  • does not always cope with the track at high speeds;
  • high price.

How to choose the right model

What the reviews say:

  • the tire profile should not be too wide. The smaller it is, the more stable the car is;
  • in what year the tires were produced - preference should be given to more modern models;
  • Toyo winter tires Velcro should be used in regions where the temperature in winter drops below 20 degrees. In regions with milder climates, studded winter tires are more suitable. This is confirmed by the reviews of the owners;
  • city dwellers are best off using a tick-shaped tread pattern, since then their grip is higher;
  • for driving on ice and in regions with an unstable climate, it is best to use Toyo's studded models;
  • For residents of small settlements, Toyo winter tires without studs are perfect.

Where can I buy

Toyo winter tires are sold in almost every tire center in the country. Below are the store addresses, prices and owner reviews:

The Toyo Observe Garit G3-Ice studded winter tire is one of the new products of the Japanese tire giant, presented ahead of the new winter season. Compared to the previous model, the new tire offers better grip on any winter surface. Like most competitors, this model features a V-shaped symmetrical directional tread pattern for superior performance.

Features of the tread pattern

Japanese tire workers preferred to use, perhaps, the most "classic" tread pattern with a V-shaped arrangement of elements. Their choice is logical and understandable, given the specifics of the application of this model. Despite the widespread use of the V-shaped tread pattern, the Japanese were able to apply several interesting technical solutions in its structure, which ensured the tire's high competitiveness.

First of all, it is necessary to note the clear division of the tread into the central part and the shoulder areas. Each of these building blocks performs a strictly defined range of tasks, thereby providing the required level of functionality. The central part of the tread is characterized by the location of the tread blocks at a significant angle relative to the direction of travel. In combination with the large dimensions of the blocks themselves, this made it possible to significantly increase directional stability, as well as reduce rolling resistance.

The shoulder areas of the tread also consist of a plurality of individual blocks, which are located at an almost right angle with respect to the direction of travel. This arrangement is due to the desire to provide the tire with maximum efficiency during braking, since it is this part of the tread in this mode that has the maximum pressure.

Excellent grip on ice

Model Toyo Observe Garit G3-Ice features excellent grip on ice, which has been achieved through studs and a large number of self-locking sipes. Compared to its predecessor, the novelty has an increased number of steel spikes, which form 9 rows during movement. This made it possible to provide reliable adhesion to the icy surface. In this case, the "underwater" part of the spikes has the shape of a five-pointed star, thanks to which it was possible to provide a more reliable fixation with the protector.

Another important component in providing traction on ice is the S-shaped sipes, which are located in a huge number on each of the tread elements. At the moment of contact with the roadway, each of these sipes opens, forming an additional edge of adhesion to the road. At the same time, the S-shaped shape of the walls allows them to be tightly fixed to each other, thereby ensuring high rigidity of the tread blocks. As a result, the tire is characterized by fast and precise reactions on any type of surface.

Also, it should be noted about the proprietary rubber compound for winter tires from this manufacturer. As with other models, the Toyo Observe Garit G3-Ice tread compound contains crushed walnut shells. As it travels, it forms countless additional grip edges to ensure reliable performance on ice.

Key features of Toyo Observe Garit G3-Ice

- thanks to the optimized tread pattern, the tire has excellent grip on any type of winter surface;
- an innovative rubber compound with silicon-containing components, silica and polymers provides excellent grip on icy surfaces, excellent elasticity at low temperatures, as well as increased resistance to high-temperature impact;
- excellent directional stability in all conditions, thanks to the V-shaped structure.

Kazuki Kawakami, project manager at Toyo Tires' R&D Center, was passionate about drawing graphics to explain the design of winter tires. And most often, speaking about innovations, he mentioned a novelty to our market - the Observe Garit GIZ non-studded model. And at the end of the conversation, he asked me to forget those very graphs and not reproduce them in magazine materials. I promised to forget about the charts, but it makes sense to tell about the technologies that are used in the creation of Toyo Observe Garit GIZ

The Observe Garit GIZ tire was introduced to the Japanese market in 2014, and this winter season it is offered in the markets of Europe and Russia. And it would seem that this combination of regions should alert us: we are well aware of the tires "Europeans", focused on the mild winter of Central Europe. But the developers themselves assure that the rubber compound of the tire tread was precisely created taking into account large temperature differences (which, by the way, is typical for a number of regions of Japan), and therefore the tire retains its elasticity and, accordingly, the stability of characteristics in a large temperature range. That is, there is a reference point for Russian conditions. And the first item among the important characteristics of the Observe Garit GIZ engineers at Toyo Tires name improved braking and handling on ice. There is nothing to argue here: for a studless tire, this is really very important. The "abrasive" properties of the tread are provided by the microparticles of walnut shells already familiar to us from the Observe GSi-5 model, but there is another enemy on the icy surface - a thin film of water that forms in the contact patch of the tire with the road. The absorbing carbon micropores NEO are designed to fight this film, like a sponge, drying the contact patch of the tire with the road and thereby improving the adhesion of two surfaces - the tread of the tire and the ice road. The helpers of this very "sponge" are three-dimensional lamellas, which also absorb a layer of water on the ice surface. But the role of these lamellas is not limited only to drainage: by clinging to the ice with their edges, they improve grip.

A. 3D sipes absorb water that forms between the tire and the road surface and also cling to an icy road. B. Shoulder grooves that extend into the center section drain water and snow and improve traction on wet and snowy roads. C. Snow Claw increases block rigidity and grip on snow. D. Combination blocks with minimized misalignment increase the stability of the tire when cornering. E. Highly stiff shoulder area makes the tire resistant to potholes and sidewall wear. F. Frequent undulating sipes reduce tread block movement and provide stable performance on dry, wet and icy surfaces.

The Observe Garit GIZ has a very original tread design. By the way, some tire manufacturers insist that the originality of these products can also emphasize the individuality of their owner. But in this case, the functionality of the design is much more important. Toyo Tires dubbed the transverse zigzags on the central rib of the Observe Garit GIZ a "snow claw": indeed, with their sharp edges they literally "bite" into the snow, but at the same time provide grip both on ice and on a dry road. Developed shoulder grooves contribute to both grip on snowy roads and drainage of water (which improves grip on wet roads) and slush. The tread blocks located on both sides of the central rib also have an original design - this solution provides the necessary rigidity to prevent their movement, which has a positive effect on handling. And also in the tire design there is a solution that, taking into account the quality of most of our roads, will certainly appeal to our motorists: the stiffness of the shoulder area is increased, which protects the tire from damage when driving on poorly surfaced roads. There is one more novelty that is not always used in tire construction. The Observe Garit GIZ has multi-directional First Edge sipes that provide traction even during the tire break-in period. By the way, for some reason we do not pay special attention to this particular period of tire operation.

INTERVIEW WITH KAZUKI KAWAKAMI, PROJECT MANAGER OF THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER TOYO TIRES

Competition in the Russian tire market is high. Moreover, both in the segment of summer and winter tires. What is needed in order to successfully develop in this market?

First and foremost, we need to understand the needs and demands of consumers. It is on the basis of such requests that we develop new models. And from our point of view, this is the most important factor for success.

Not so long ago tires were in short supply on the Russian market. Then the crisis began, and the price became the main factor for buyers. Today the price is also an important factor, but people think more and more about safety. How to achieve a balance of price and quality in such a situation, which will ensure success?

That's a very good question. The balance between tire value and performance is indeed a very important factor, and Toyo has always paid a lot of attention to these factors. As an engineer, my primary goal is to get the best possible performance from the product I'm developing. But the “flight of creative thought” should not be divorced from reality: we should always think about what price niche we are designing this or that model for. And the price of the tire with the highest and most balanced performance should always remain reasonable.

In Russia, there is still a stereotype regarding winter tires: we do not trust too much those products that are developed in a country where there are no harsh winter conditions. What arguments can you make that Toyo tires are right for our environment?

It doesn't really matter where the bus is being developed. It is important where and how it is tested. We are not limited only to tests at our test site on the island of Hokkaido (where, by the way, winter conditions are quite harsh), but we also actively use the polar test site in Ivalo. We carry out these tests constantly, trying to get as much information as possible, on the basis of which we develop a product. But real-world tire testing is only the final part of the development process. The equipment of our laboratories allows us to carry out tests with imitation of any conditions. In addition, the company has supercomputers on which we conduct virtual prototype tests using a database. The advantage of computer simulation and testing on laboratory equipment is that the conditions in which the tests are carried out are absolutely stable. But, as I said above, we pay a lot of attention to testing in real winter conditions.

With tires equipped with spikes, everything is clear - they are targeted at the Scandinavian and Russian markets. And what are the features in the development of friction tires designed for Europe and Russia?

As for studless tires, Toyo Tires is more focused on the needs of the domestic market. On the Russian market, we have two models of studless tires: the already familiar Observe GSi-5 and the new Observe Garit GIZ this season. The latest model is just taken from the domestic market, and during its development, the focus was on performance on ice. But the Observe GSi-5 model was developed for the European markets, including the Russian market. When developing it, the emphasis was placed on the balance of performance on snow, ice and wet roads.

As for the Observe Garit GIZ. You mentioned that the focus was on the tire's performance on ice. Can we talk about the high bar of other, no less important characteristics that ensure safety on a winter road?

Of course, we also tried to bring the rest of the characteristics to the highest level. But the most difficult moment for a studless tire is braking on ice. Tire grip on ice was precisely the parameter on which the developers focused. Achieving high performance on other types of road surface that are found in winter was not difficult for us.

Even the Russian winter is characterized by a large temperature difference. Here, the rubber compound formulation is of great importance, which allows the tread layer to remain elastic at extremely low temperatures. Most often, the problem is solved by the percentage of silica in the rubber compound. Are there any special secrets in the Toyo winter tire compound?

The rubber compound of a tire is a very complex product. And its main ingredients are natural and synthetic rubbers. It is precisely synthetic rubber that is largely responsible for how the rubber compound behaves at low temperatures. The addition of silica alone does not solve the problem. Suppose by adding silica we will improve the tire's ice grip, but the snow grip performance may suffer. The challenge for engineers is precisely to find the balance of the materials used (including polymers) and to ensure that the tire behaves stably on any surface and at any temperature.

Let's try to summarize everything that has been said. Can you give three reasons why readers of our magazine will choose the products of Toyo Tires?

The first is the characteristics of our products in winter conditions, the second is the stability of the tires under any conditions, the third is the unique and very original tread pattern. But there is a fourth argument, the question of which was already raised at the beginning of the interview: our products have a balanced price level, which is very important in the current economic situation. We control production costs very carefully, actively use new materials and technologies. Therefore, the consumable part (and, accordingly, the final price of the product) is reduced, but by no means at the expense of reducing the characteristics of our products.
