Overheating of the engine threatens with serious consequences: it will jam the piston, pierce it, which will go into a major overhaul of the power unit. Therefore, the cooling fan is an important element that protects the power unit from extreme heat.

Checking the performance of the cooling fan motor
The easiest way to check if the fan is working is to put two straight wires on it: minus and plus.
The plus is taken from the battery, the minus from the car body. If it did not work when the circuit was closed, then the problem lies precisely in it. When starting the blades, look for the problem elsewhere.
Cooling fan operation diagram
Basically, when a non-working fan is detected, several reasons are identified:
- Burned out electric motor, open circuit in the winding;
- Wear of carbon brushes;
- Bearing jammed or crumbled.
If in the last two cases the problem is solved, so to speak, with little blood, the first involves replacing the electric motor.
Important! When throwing wires, the main power supply to the electric motor must be disconnected.
Checkout procedure
The fan operation on the VAZ-2114 is tied through 2 fuses. One of them is also responsible for the sound signal. You can check it by pressing the horn. If there is no sound, replace it with a whole one. It is located in the mounting block, it is a 20 amp, marked F5.
We check and, if necessary, change the fuses
The second is located under the torpedo, on the passenger side. Under the casing there are 3 fused relays for each. The middle steam is responsible for the operation of the cooling fan. Replace the burned-out element with a new one (the fuse can be “ringed out” with a multimeter or limited to visual inspection. An ohmmeter is required to check the operation of the relay). Checking their condition, at the same time, make sure that the contacts are in a normal state, and if an oxide is found, clean it.
Important! Having found a blown fuse, you should not limit yourself to replacing it with a new one. It is imperative to find the cause of the break, as in the near future the new one will burn out again.
Checking the sensor for switching on the fan
If no reason is found, the next step should be to check the functionality of the fan switch... This is not difficult to do. De-energize it and turn on the ignition, while paying attention to the fan. The rotation of the blades indicates that the cause of the problem is in the sensor.
Checking the sensor for turning on the cooling fan
Due to the fact that very often the sensor starts to fail, giving erroneous signals, it is recommended to check it in one more way... To do this, you will need a container with a thermometer and a multimert. The wires from the measuring device are connected to the sensor terminals, the threaded part of the sensor is immersed in the liquid. Heat the contents of the container to the fan operating temperature (on the VAZ 2114 - 92 degrees). When the contacts are closed, the multimert will beep. This means that the sensor is working, if this has not happened, you can safely throw it away and buy a new one.
Healthy! Before installation, it is advisable to check the performance of the purchased sensor in the same way.
Video about checking the sensor for turning on the cooling fan
Final check
After fixing the problem, start the car engine. The fan motor should start after about 5 minutes of idling... If this does not happen, and the temperature has reached the desired norm, diagnose the malfunctions again.
Video about the reasons why the cooling fan does not turn on on the VAZ-2114
Why the radiator fan on the VAZ 2114 does not turn on
The fan is used to create air currents that are sent to the engine radiator. This is necessary to cool the fluid that circulates through it.
If the car is moving at high speed, the fan is not particularly needed, since the engine receives all the cooling it needs from the oncoming air currents. But when the car goes into slow speed or in standby mode with the engine running, the role of the propeller becomes indispensable.
Required device
Turning on occurs after sending the corresponding signal from the electronic control unit. The computer, in turn, learns about the need to turn on the fan from the temperature sensor. The switching threshold is 103-105 degrees Celsius.
In the case of VAZ 2114, the fan (propeller) is located in the engine compartment under the rear of the radiator.
Why it doesn't work
There are several reasons why the propeller cannot turn on when the temperature indicator situation requires it:
- The fan motor is defective, i.e. the drive;
- There was a fuse failure that was burning;
- Repaired relay;
- The wiring was broken;
- Sensor connectors have lost contacts;
- The sensor is defective.
We found a problem
Troubleshooting area
explanation
Detaches the connector on the propeller and connects directly to the battery. If the fan is running, the drive is working normally. If the propeller still won't twist, the problem is in the motor.
Wiring and contacts
If the propeller is not working, you should check the condition of the wiring and make sure that the sensor pins are working properly
You can find these two elements in the engine compartment on the left, closer to the driver inside the mounting block. The fan includes a fuse marked F4 with a rated current of 20A. The test can be performed by pressing the beep button. What for? Yes, because it is also associated with this fuse. Or check the tester
It is located in the same place as the fuse. For effective verification, it is best to use relay, in the performance of which you are 100% sure, install it instead of the old one and check
To test the sensor, disconnect power from the sensor. If it works, the propeller will start working in emergency mode, that is, it will blow continuously. Disconnect the connector and turn on the ignition. If the screw turns, then the sensor is broken. Need a replacement

VAZ 2114.15 FORCED OPERATION OF THE COOLING FAN USING A BUTTON AND RELAY
MATERIALS: RELAY 4X PIN (NORMAL ON LIGHT, SIGNAL) PAD UNDER RELAY WITH WIRES, BUTTON.
If the fan itself is the cause of all the problems, there is no need to replace it, because in some cases it can be completely repaired. Breakages are often associated with bearing or brushes.
If the cause of the failure is a motor failure due to a broken wire or short circuit, you should not risk repairing it. Easier and better to replace the entire disc.
Check for open circuit
If you are driving a vehicle that does not have a cooling propeller, it will overheat the coolant and destroy the injectors, rubber elements, the main cylinder block gasket, and the valve cover. Nearby and before the destruction of the components of the piston group.
fuse
Driving with a broken fan is strictly prohibited.
The price of the issue
Before solving the problem with a radiator not working, it is important for many to know the cost of the components and the work.
The new element will cost about 1.5-2.5 thousand rubles today, depending on the model and region. The cost of replacement at a service station will be from 400 rubles or more. Although you do not need to spend money on this, as a self-replacement will take no more than half an hour. And there is nothing particularly difficult here.
temperature sensor
replacement
To replace a fan fan yourself, you need a fairly small set of tools, which include:
- Crosshead screwdriver;
- 8mm hexagon wrench;
- Socket wrench 10 mm.
If you're ready, then we'll get started.
- Place the car on a level platform, apply the handbrake. Just in case, you can put additional supports under the wheels of your VAZ 2114. Precautions never get in the way.
- Raise the hood, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
- With a 10mm key, body fasteners air filter dismantled.
- Equipped with a screwdriver, loosen the clamp from the channel located on the MAF sensor. This way you can remove the corrugation. Do it.
- The air filter housing cover has self-tapping screws to hold it in place. They are unscrewed with a screwdriver, after which the filter component is removed from its seat.
- Take an 8mm wrench and use it to remove the air intake fittings, then remove the air intake.
- Now, with a 10mm and 8mm wrench, the retaining nuts on the fan shroud are removed around the entire perimeter. There you will find 6 nuts in total.
- Disconnect the connector from the wire from the connector of your broken fan.
- Remove the fan hood by grasping the drive, i.e. the electric motor.
- Armed with a 10mm wrench, you need to remove the three mounting bolts holding the motor to the housing.
- Install a new fan to replace the old device.
- We return all fasteners to their places, connect the connectors, perform the assembly in the reverse order.
After installing new equipment, be sure to turn on the engine and let it run for a while. Until the fan turns on and the propeller turns. It will take no more than 5 minutes. Soon the fan itself should be turned off. If it does not stop, turn off the engine. Repeat the experiment.
It rarely happens that after replacement the fan is still not working. Even if this happened, it is associated with two possible events. other components of the cooling system have been damaged, or you have acquired an inoperative fan. Alas, given the number of counterfeits on the market, you cannot rule out the second option.

All the main wiring diagrams and modifications of the connection of the cooling fan (VO) of the liquid in VAZ cars of various models are given. What is the essence of VO work? An electric motor with an impeller on a shaft is mounted inside a rectangular metal frame, with which it is attached to the back of the radiator. When voltage (12 V) is applied to the drive contacts, it starts to work, rotating the blades and creating a directed air stream, which, in fact, cools the antifreeze or antifreeze.
If the cooling fan does not work, do not rush to contact a car service. You can also determine the cause of the malfunction yourself. Moreover, for this it is not at all necessary to have special skills - just study the reference material from site and follow the instructions to check / replace it.

Until 1998, on cars with the old fuse box 17.3722 (finger fuses), relay 113.3747 was included in the fan circuit. There is no such relay after 1998.
Also, until 1998, the TM-108 switch-on sensor was used (the closing temperature of its contacts is 99 ± 3 ° C, the opening temperature is 94 ± 3 ° C), after 1998 TM-108-10 with similar temperature ranges or its analogues from different manufacturers. The TM-108 sensor works only in tandem with a relay, reinforced for high current TM-108-10 can work with or without a relay.

The circuit for switching on the VAZ 2110 cooling fan on carburetor and injection vehicles is different. On cars with a carburetor engine, a thermo-bimetallic sensor TM-108 is used for this, and on cars with an injection engine, the control is carried out by the controller.
Scheme for 2113, 2114, 2115 injector and carburetor
Where is the fan relay
4 - electric fan relay;
5 - electric fuel pump relay;
6 - main relay (ignition relay).
Attention: the order of relays and fuses can be arbitrary, we are guided by the color of the wires. Therefore, we find a relay from which a thin pink wire with a black stripe extends from the main relay (pin 85 *) (not to be confused with a thin red wire with a black stripe from the controller) and a thick white power wire with a black stripe (pin 87) (white and pink wires we need), this is the fan relay.
If the cooling fan is not working
To drive the fan, a DC electric motor with permanent magnet excitation ME-272 or similar is installed. Technical data of the electric fan and the sensor for switching on the fan:
- Rated speed of the shaft of the electric motor with the impeller, 2500 - 2800 rpm.
- Power consumption of the electric motor, 14 A
- The temperature of the sensor contacts closure, 82 ± 2 degrees.
- Opening temperature of the sensor contacts, 87 ± 2 degrees.
The cooling fan may not turn on due to:
- malfunctions of the electric drive;
- blown fuse;
- faulty thermostat;
- a failed temperature sensor for turning on the cooler;
- faulty VO relay;
- breakage of electrical wiring;
- faulty expansion tank plug.
To check the VAZ fan motor itself, we apply a 12 V voltage from the battery to its terminals - a working motor will start working. If the problem is with the fan, you can try to repair it. The problem usually lies in the brushes or bearings. But it happens that the electric motor fails due to a short circuit or breakage in the windings. In such cases, it is best to replace the entire drive.
The VO fuse is located in the mounting block of the car's engine compartment and is designated F7 (20 A). The test is carried out using a vehicle tester, included in the probe mode.
- In a car with a carburetor engine it is necessary to check the sensor - turn on the ignition and short-circuit the two wires going to the sensor. The fan should turn on. If it doesn't, the problem is definitely not with the sensor.
- For injection cars it is necessary to warm up the engine to operating temperature, and disconnect the sensor connector by disconnecting it from the on-board network of the machine. In this case, the controller must start the fan in emergency mode. The electronic unit perceives this as a failure in the cooling system, and forces the fan drive to run continuously. If the drive starts, the sensor is faulty.
Replacing the electric fan in the car
- We put the car on a flat surface, immobilize it with the parking brake.
- We open the hood, turn off the negative terminal.
- Using a 10 key, unscrew the fasteners of the air filter housing.
- Use a screwdriver to loosen the air duct clamp on the air flow sensor and remove the corrugation.
- We unscrew the self-tapping screws securing the cover of the air filter housing, remove the filter element.
- Using the 8 key, unscrew the air intake mount and dismantle it.
- With a key for 10, then for 8, unscrew the nuts securing the fan casing around the perimeter (6 pieces in total).
- Disconnect the wiring block on the fan connector.
- Carefully remove the fan casing together with the drive.
- Using a 10 key, unscrew the 3 bolts holding the electric motor on the casing.
- We put a new one in its place.
- We put the structure in place, fix it, connect the connector.
- Further installation is carried out in the reverse order.
Modernization of the control scheme
The cooling fan turns on at a dozen at a temperature of 100-105 ° C, while normal operating
the temperature of the engine is 85-90 ° C, the fan turns on when the engine overheats, which naturally has a negative effect.
This problem can be solved in two ways: adjust the switching temperature in the "brains" or make a button. We will focus on the second. Turning on the fan from the button is very convenient: got into a jam - turned it on, left - turned it off, and nobody overheats.
A button for selecting the fan operating mode was installed in the cabin (permanently disabled, permanently on, automatically switched on by means of a sensor) - this "tuning" is not mandatory, but it will be a very useful addition.
There will be a large current on the relay contacts 87, 30, on the wire from the battery to the fuse and the fan mass, and therefore we must use wires with a cross section of at least 2 mm, otherwise the thinner wire will not withstand and burn out.
Video - connecting and checking VO
The fan is used to generate air currents that are directed to the motor radiator. This is necessary in order to cool the liquid that circulates through it.
If the car is moving at high speed, the fan is not particularly required, since the motor receives all the necessary cooling from the oncoming air flows. But when the car goes into slow or idle mode with the engine running, the propeller role becomes indispensable.
Turning on occurs after the corresponding signal is sent from the electronic control unit. The ECU, in turn, learns about the need to turn on the fan from the temperature sensor. The switch-on threshold is 103-105 degrees Celsius.
In the case of the VAZ 2114, the fan (propeller) is located in the engine compartment on the back of the radiator.
Why doesn't it work
There are several reasons why the propeller may not turn on when the temperature situation requires it:
- The fan electric motor, that is, the drive, is out of order;
- A fuse has broken and has blown;
- Relay failed;
- Broken wiring;

Finding a malfunction

Explanation |
Propeller check |
Disconnects the connector on the propeller and connects directly to the battery. If the fan is running, the drive is fine. If the propeller still does not spin, the problem is in the electric motor. |
Wiring and Contacts |
If the propeller does not work, it is imperative to check the condition of the wiring and make sure that the sensor contacts are working |
You can find these two elements in the engine compartment on the left, closer to the driver, inside the mounting block. The fan has a fuse marked F4 with a rated current of 20A. The check can be done by pressing the horn button. Why? Because it is also connected to this fuse. Or check with a tester |
|
Located in the same place as the fuse. For an effective test, it is best to take a relay that you are 100% sure of its performance, install it in place of the old one and check |
|
To test the sensor, disconnect power from the sensor. If it works, the propeller will start working in emergency mode, that is, it will blow continuously. Disconnect the connector and turn on the ignition. If the propeller spins, then the sensor is broken. Need a replacement |
When to change
If the fan itself is the cause of all the problems, it is not necessary to change it, since in some cases it can be repaired. Failures are often associated with the bearing or brushes.
If the cause of the breakdown is the failure of the electric motor due to a break in the wiring or a short circuit, you should not risk repairing it. It is easier and better to replace the entire drive.
If you drive a car that does not have a cooling propeller, it will overheat the coolant and destroy the pipes, rubber elements, the master block gasket and the valve cover. Not far from the destruction of the components of the piston group.
It is strictly forbidden to operate a car with a broken fan.
The price of the issue
Before tackling the problem with a radiator propeller not working, it is important for many to know about the cost of components and labor.
The new element will cost today about 1.5-2.5 thousand rubles, depending on the model and region. The cost of replacement at a service station will be from 400 rubles and more. Although it is not necessary to spend money on this, since an independent replacement will take you no more than half an hour. Yes, and there is nothing particularly complicated here.
Replacement
In order to replace the fan cooling propeller with your own hands, you need a fairly small set of tools, which include:
- Crosshead screwdriver;
- Socket wrench 8 mm;
- 10 mm socket wrench.
If you are ready, then let's get started.
- Park the car on a level surface, apply the handbrake. Just in case, you can put additional supports under the wheels of your VAZ 2114. Precautions never go wrong.
- Lift the hood, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
- Using a 10 mm wrench, the fasteners of the air filter housing are dismantled.
- Using a screwdriver, loosen the clamp from the air duct located on the MAF sensor. So you will be able to remove the corrugation. Do it.
- The air filter housing cover has self-tapping screws that hold it in place. They are unscrewed with a screwdriver, after which the filter component is removed from its seat.
- Now take an 8 mm key and use it to dismantle the air intake fasteners, and then remove the air intake itself.
- Now with a key of 10 and 8 millimeters, the fastening nuts on the fan casing are removed along the entire perimeter. There you will find a total of 6 nuts.
- Disconnect the connector from the wire from the connector of your broken fan.
- Remove the fan shroud, while grasping the drive, that is, the electric motor.
- Armed with a 10 mm wrench, you need to dismantle the three mounting bolts that hold the electric motor on the casing.
- Install the new fan in place of the old device.
- We return all fasteners to their places, connect the connectors, and carry out the assembly in the reverse order.
After installing new equipment, be sure to turn on the engine and let it run for a while. Until the fan turns on and the propeller starts spinning. This will take no more than 5 minutes. Soon, the fan should shut down by itself. If it does not stop, turn off the engine. Repeat the experiment.
