E46 "BMW" series: characteristics and reviews. BMW E46 - how to choose - what to look at BMW E46 sedan restyling

BMW 3 E46 is a coveted object for many car enthusiasts. Someone loves the "three» for an aggressive and balanced appearance, someone for technical characteristics. There is a reason to love, of course, but how much will such an attachment cost? The age and peculiarities of operation leave their imprints even on a well-designed car. Is it possible now to find a copy in a “living state”» ? Let's figure it out.

A bit of history

In the back of the E46, BMW of the third model appeared in 1998. The differences are significant. Especially in terms of safety and interior trim. The motors have also been improved, they have become more powerful. Although outwardly, the differences are not so dramatic. Smoother lines have added modernity and are still attracting connoisseurs today. And the coupe body came out so harmonious that it overtook the sedan in popularity.

The power of the engines was increased not out of a whim, but out of necessity. In those years, the requirements for the safety of cars increased greatly. Therefore, the manufacturer radically improved the rigidity of the body, which led to an increase in weight. And BMW 3 is a driver's car in spirit, so everything must be balanced.

The new weight and power have resulted in a more complex and drastically redesigned chassis. Thanks to such efforts, it was possible to create a new fourth generation of the third model of BMW and preserve the precision of control and a sense of drive while driving.

Body

BMW 3 has a complete set of bodies: a sedan, a coupe, a station wagon, a convertible, and even a budget compact that few people like. The first three are not difficult to find in our area. Moderately rot, mainly due to age and physical damage. There are "special» places to check before buying:

  • bottom of doors round;
  • wheel arches, especially if wide tires and dirt with pebbles are installed "sandblasting»The edges of the arches;
  • front shock absorber cups -be sure to check... During a long ride on the "killed» suspension on our roads, they come off the body. AThe VIN number is stamped on the right cup, so with traces of welding work, you risk not registering the car;
  • the junction of the rear subframe with the body... The problem that the manufacturer tried to fix after the restyling, but until the end he did not succeed. After 2001, gaps are less common, but still occur.

The battery of the BMW 3 E46 is located on the right in the trunk and some owners forget to put on a tube to remove the fumes. This promotes accelerated corrosion. Do not forget to check the terminals at the same time. Plus on the "three-ruble note"» special, it fires back in a serious accident to de-energize the car. If the terminal turns out to be ordinary, then this is an occasion to think about the emergency past of such an instance.

Salon and equipment

The space in the cabin in the new generation is no longer. As always, the BMW 3 is a car for the driver, and the front passenger will also be comfortable. But the quality of finishing materials has improved significantly. Soft plastic and high-quality leather remain in good condition for as long as possible. Therefore, by the appearance of the salon, one can judge the attitude of the owner to his car and the real mileage.

Passenger safety improvednot only through the rigidity of the body. Already in the basic configuration there are 4 airbags: two in front and two side. And they began to install seat belts with force limiters and pretensioners.

In the "base» there will already be air conditioning, front power windows and disc brakes in a circle. The driver will be comfortable in all respects. Ergonomics, seats, front panel position - everything was designed for him.

The list of optional equipment is pretty standard: climate, rain / light sensors, electric seat and mirror adjustments. In the secondary market, these options do not particularly affect the price, the engine, year and general condition are more important.

Electrical systems

There are many reasons for possible concerns, but most of them are eliminated "anemically» ... If you wish, you can sort out and fix many breakdowns yourself, especially since all topics have already been "sucked"» on the Internet.

The comfort unit (ZTE) is responsible for the electrical adjustment of the sunroof, windows and mirrors. It is not necessary to change it in the assembly; it is enough to replace individual relays or clean the contacts.

If the climate control glitches, do not rush to change the control unit. Sometimes it is enough to disassemble it and clean the internal elements from dust. Namely, the temperature sensor and the fan, which is located inside the unit. It is also advisable to lubricate the fan axis.

The wiring itself can bring more trouble, especially under the hood. Damage is extremely difficult to find, and because of them they begin to "glitch» various sensors. Including those responsible for the operation of the cooling system fan, and this is already fraught with engine overheating.

Trivial ignition keys can bring a bit of headache. They are equipped with an immobilizer that is powered by a built-in battery that charges while the key is in the ignition. Over time (5-7 years), the battery capacity decreases, and after a two-hour walk you may no longer open the car from the button.

There is no painless battery replacement. It is necessary to "raskurochit» old case and transfer all the filling into the new one. After that, you will need another special initialization procedure. The new car relied on three regular keys and two with an immobilizer. The presence of the latter upon purchase is required.

Gasoline engines

Favorite section "bimero» ... Moreover, engines were installed on the E46 with an eye on reliability. Chain motors with cast iron blocks or sleeves are capable of serving 250+ thousand km without any complaints. But there are exceptions, let's look at them in order.

316i, 318i- unlike the previous generation, the designation 316 does not mean that a 1.6-liter engine is installed. There are several options.

Before restyling:

  • M43TUB16- really a 1.6 engine with a capacity of 102 liters. with., but put it only on Compact and only a few first years of release;
  • M43TUB19- the same 8-valve engine, only 1.9 liters. The 316i was equipped with 105 hp, and the 318i - 118 hp. with.

After August 2001:

  • N42B18- not very successful updated 1.8-liter engine (115 hp). Based on the N42B20, only with a short-stroke crankshaft. Installed on E46 316i;
  • N42B20- two-liter "big brother» power is already 143 forces and with the same problems. The main one is the increased risk of overheating. A clogged radiator and an unreliable thermostat contribute to this. Increased noise during engine operation is usually associated with the timing unit. If the engine is loud and diesel» works, you will have to at least change the chain tensioner, and possibly the chain itself (an opening will show). These engines were used for the 318;
  • N46B20- modified N42, which appeared after 2003. There were quite a few technical changes, but this did not affect the overall reliability. But the power has grown to 150 forces.

Above in the line, there is a little less confusion. Since the 320th "troika"» only in-line six-cylinder engines were installed. During the production period of E46, two generations managed to change them -M52TU and M54.

320i
- before restyling were completed with two-literwith a capacity of 150 liters. with. Such a motor already allows you to enjoy the wonderful handling of the "troika» ... In this case, you do not have to bother too much about reliability. Cast iron sleeves and double vanos"(Double Vanos) serve 300+ thousand kilometers without much effort. With the "human» attitude to car maintenance, of course.

After restyling in 2001, the motor was replaced with an improved one.M54B22... The volume increased by 200 cubes and the power increased to 170 liters. with. Reliability after revisions by engineers did not suffer.

323i- pre-stylingМ52TUB25gave out only 170 liters. with., afterM54B25has built up muscles and with the same volume has a capacity of 192 liters. with. In connection with these changes, the nameplate on the trunk has changed to325i.

328i, 330i- the same situation is with the top-end motors of the line. 2.8 liter, 193 hpM52TUB28, replaced with a three-literM54B30with a herd of 231 horses (only M3 is cooler).

All the main and general problems with BMW 3 engines in the E46 body can be fit into several points:

  1. Cooling system - it is imperative to clean the radiators at least once every 50 thousand km. Change the thermostat only to the original one and it is desirable for prophylaxis every 100 thousand km. Do not use a pump with a plastic impeller.
  2. Do not fill in engine oil thoughtlessly. When using bad oil, oil channels, hydraulic lifters and piston rings are coked. And THAT should be done at least once every 10-15 thousand km. The oil must comply with BMW's special tolerances:
    1. for M43TU, M52TU and M54 - BMW Longlife-01 or Longlife-98;
    2. for N42 and N46 - BMW Longlife-01 or LL-01FE.
  3. N-series motors. Higher operating temperatures cause problems more often than M-series.

Diesel motors

Not a bad option to save on fuel, but the older the car is, the more risky such a purchase is. The savings can translate into very large costs for repairing the fuel system.

Only two diesel engines were installed on the E46 - M47 and M57. But, traditionally, each of them has modifications.

318d- completed with the lowest powerM47D20, 115 l. with. But the consumption is in the region of 6 liters of diesel fuel in the city.

320D- already installed more interesting modifications - 136 liters. with. before restyling, and modified 150-strongM47TUD20after 2001. The fuel system has undergone major modernization, since 2001 - Common Rail. And the turbocharger became electronically controlled.

330d- in-line and six-cylinder, as befits a BMW. Most of the time it was producedM57D30with a capacity of 184 strength. Only on the BMW 3 E46 after 2003 was theM57TUD30(204 l. From.), Which could already "compete» with a top-end gasoline engine. Especially at the start, due to the excellent traction from the base.

Officially, diesel E46s were not supplied to us, so all the copies were brought already used. Common items of increased attention when buying:

  • turbine- the life of which directly depends on the timing of the oil change in the engine;
  • dampers intake manifold - if you ignore their poor condition, then you can "get» for engine overhaul;
  • fuel injectors- are expensive, but must be restored on early modifications.

The approaching diesel» problems cannot be determined without high-quality and, accordingly, expensive diagnostics. But if you can find a decent copy, especially a three-liter one, then you can save on fuel without losing dynamics. Although the average annual price tag for servicing a diesel BMW is still higher than a gasoline one (one can argue with the last statement, of course).

Gear boxes

The mechanics of 5 steps usually do not fail. According to the regulations, it is not necessary to change the oil in it, but if the mileage is over 200 thousand km, then such a procedure will not be superfluous. Even the grip of the "riders» walks 150+ thousand km. But the dual-mass flywheel is at risk. It is impossible to check its condition without removing the box, and replacement will cost $ 500+ (if repaired).

If you choose BMW 3 E46 with automatic transmission, then look with German ZF... There are two modifications of them: 5HP19 and enhanced 5HP24. You can check using the VIN number or on the lift. If the previous owner changed the oil on time and did not overheat the box too much, then up to 250-300 thousand km you can not worry too much about the automatic transmission. Then go through the planned (moderately expensive) maintenance with the replacement of worn out parts, and continue driving.

The second option is an automatic transmission from GM(American General Motors). In this case problems arise quite regularly... The oil pump may break down, the thermostat in the automatic transmission may jam, and the clutches are afraid of heavy loads, especially after 100 thousand mileage.

It is a common misconception that GM boxes were installed only on the E46 from the American market. They can be installed on any three» fourth generation, with any engine.

In the body of the E46, there are rare examples with all-wheel drive iX. It is smart - it transfers the moment to the right wheels, and does not add any special problems during operation. But the driving experience can change dramatically.

The rear gearbox is maintenance-free, so if there are no leaks, then it is better not to touch it. Fails very rarely.

Suspension

Myths and legends about the weak suspension of BMW are confirmed if you drive on R18 wheels with rubber one centimeter high, and do not slow down on potholes. In other cases, the suspension is quite reliable, without pronounced weak points.

Yes, it is tough, but due to this, the E46-I drives perfectly. Moreover, the BMW 3 can hardly be called comfortable for anyone other than the driver.

The service life also directly depends on the quality of the installed consumables. Their choice is huge, and the most expensive components are not always installed before the sale. On mono drive vehicles the ball joint does not change separately from the lever... Some will bore the seat and fit a ball joint from the all-wheel drive versions, where it is supplied separately. This does not affect safety and manageability, but you can save a little money.

The propeller shaft and rear suspension require constant attention in the form of regular checks. A timely replacement of the drive boot or the gearbox oil seal can save you from large costs.

All suspension elements are changed individually and separately. If the car is completely “killed”» and long ago, the restoration will cost more than it seems. Moreover, there is a reason to think about the general attitude of the owner to his car.

Outcome

The hardest task is find a well-kept specimen... Every year there are fewer of them. Better to choose the BMW 3 E46 inline-six or the three-liter diesel, which is renowned for its reliability. Just be sure to budget for expensive diagnostics before buying.

In some cases, an automatic transmission from ZF will be cheaper to maintain than a mechanic (in case of problems with a flywheel). The GM automatic transmission, like the N-series engines, is best avoided.

BMW 3 is bought to drive, not move. Therefore, the selection process must be approached consciously.

BMW is one of the most famous German brands around the world. And one of the best-selling cars of the eminent BMW is the E46. Buyers liked BMWs of this series and still like them for many reasons. Someone falls in love with a car at first sight, without driving, and someone, having tried it once, cannot stop. There are many opinions on this, but everyone is unanimous with the statement: "There is something catchy in this episode." Let's consider the main characteristics and features of these German "handsome".

A bit of history

The sedan car appeared in 1998. It replaced the outdated E36 series. The very next year, in 1999, the station wagon and coupe E46 appeared. BMWs of this series were incredibly popular. In 2002, a record number of cars of this series were sold - more than half a million units. There were also cabrio and hatchback bodies. And, of course, a sports version with the M3 index was produced on the basis of the E46.

3 years after the start of production, the E46 sedan was modernized. When restaling, the headlights and bumpers were changed, and other more advanced power units were added. Similar changes were made to other bodies of the popular series.

BMW 3 Series E46 existed until 2006. Then came the 90th episode. The hatchback body was the most unpopular, followed by the station wagon. In general, this series of "BMW" was very successful. Over the entire period of its existence, more than 3 million pieces have been produced and sold in production. The series was produced not only at the main factories in Germany, but also in South Africa, China, Egypt, Indonesia and even in Russia.

Variety of species by characteristics

A distinctive feature of BMW has always been a wide range of modifications within the series. This was no exception for the E46. BMW sedan was the most popular, so the choice of characteristics is especially great for it. There were only 12 petrol variants of the E46 sedan, plus 6 models were equipped with a diesel power unit. Such a wide variety was determined, first of all, by the wide range of installed engines. The smallest volume of the BMW 3 series engine is 1.6 liters; and the largest is 3.3 liters. At the same time, a 3-liter petrol car has the highest power of 231 "horses", a maximum speed of 250 km / h and the shortest acceleration time - up to 100 km / h in 6.5 seconds.

If we take the station wagon body, then here too we find 14 types of power units, which together gives 17 varieties of "BMW E46". Car engines range from 1.6 to 3.3 liters. The fastest motor for a station wagon is the same M54V30 with a capacity of 231 "horses", accelerating to a hundred in 6.8 seconds. It should be borne in mind that sports engines from the E46 M3 series were not installed on this body, as well as on the sedan. There were installed 2 engines with a volume of 3.2 liters and a capacity of 343 and 360 "horses", respectively. The more powerful one could accelerate the car to 100 km / h in just 4.9 seconds.

The three remaining bodies of the series, namely the coupe, convertible and hatchback, carried the same set of engines under the hood. At the same time, sports engines were installed on a coupe body - E46 M3, and a smaller unit in terms of power (3.2 liters) could stand on a convertible. The hatchback had the smallest set of engines installed. Either one of three petrol or one of two turbodiesel variants could be installed here.

E46 series engines

A car of any brand can be described and characterized from different angles. Let's consider one of its main components, namely the engine. As for the 46 series "BMW", there were more than a dozen of them here.

The first cars in the series were equipped with a choice of:

  • M43 for 105 and 118 "horses";
  • M52 with a capacity of 150, 170 and 193 liters. with.;
  • diesel М47 with 136 "horses" on board;
  • diesel М57 184 hp with.

After a couple of years, the cars went to restyling, and new engines appeared: N42, N45, N46, M47N, M54 and M57N. The new generation of units was distinguished by high reliability with unchanged German quality. A separate position is the engines under the E46 M3 - S54 and S54N. Their sporty character is confirmed by 343 and 360 "horses", respectively. Aggressive sporty style was emphasized by the overall look of the M3 coupe. "BMW" E46 diesel, which could compete with many well-known brands of the same middle class, nevertheless lost to its gasoline sports versions.

Gearboxes for E46

BMW cars of the described series had both a mechanical and an automatic unit for gear shifting. And if everything is more or less clear with manual transmissions, then as for the automatic transmission, there are nuances. The fact is that if the unit was produced by the well-known German company ZF, then everything is fine. These five-speed gearboxes have a long, trouble-free life. Many of them do not have an oil change. But, as practice shows, a car falls into the hands of a motorist exactly at the time when its factory life in Germany ends.

The basic rule when operating an automatic transmission is a timely oil change; if it is worn out, the torque converter of the box should be changed, and if possible, you should not overheat. Overheating can be especially difficult if a powerful 3-liter engine is installed on the car, it is hot outside and you want to drive. It's just worth remembering that overheating of the box significantly reduces the time of its operation, and sometimes leads to breakdown.

In addition to the ZF automatic transmission, a 5HP24 and GM5L40E gearbox was installed. The latter had a lot of negative reviews, due to more "capricious" work and rapid wear of parts at high speeds. Very often it literally "ended" during high-speed maneuvers. There is such an automatic transmission on the earlier 4-cylinder "BMW" E46. Engines for such boxes are more suitable for low-speed ones.

The qualities of the chassis "BMW E46"

What about the E46 suspension? "BMW" is initially a solid car, and the elastic suspension at the front on the struts, and at the rear on the levers only adds comfort and stability. Do not forget that all-wheel drive vehicles are mandatory in the 46th series. These, of course, are not SUVs, here the all-wheel drive plays the role of increased reliability when driving on snow-covered streets and good European quality dirt surfaces of rural areas.

What should you look for in the chassis? The front lever of the rear-wheel drive E46 has a non-separable ball joint, despite the fact that it itself practically does not wear out. The way out here is to install a non-standard lever or to rework an existing one in such a way as to change the ball ones from all-wheel drive cars. In all-wheel drive, the ball joints of the problem front arm are immediately collapsible. Among the other elements of the front suspension, stabilizer struts fall into the risk zone, everything else is very reliable.

The rear suspension is even better. Here, ball, as well as the so-called floating silent blocks occasionally wear out. In order not to have problems with cardan shafts and gearboxes, it is enough to inspect them regularly. Oil is added to the bridges as needed, and it is better to change it every 100 thousand km. Contrary to popular belief about non-replaceable oil, it is better to play it safe. Indeed, in fact, changing the oil is much cheaper than repairing the bridge.

Body questions on the E46

If this is your first time in a BMW, there is a high probability that you will like everything. The contrast will be especially noticeable after transplanting from a domestic car. It is really very convenient here. At the same time, everything looks as pleasant as it is used. Panel "BMW E46" is made of plastic, but high quality plastic. Initially, in any configuration, the E46 is equipped with air conditioning and electric windows. For additional money, an even greater number of different options were installed. Panel "BMW E46" is made of plastic, but high quality plastic.

Everything would be just perfect if there were no weaknesses. And the new car has plenty of them. Let's analyze the main points that you should pay special attention to when buying. One of the main problem areas, especially for a car before modernization, is the fastening of the front shock absorber supports. With frequent driving on a bad road in these places, due to constant stress, severe wear and cracks appear. This is especially bad for the right cup, where the serial number of the body is stamped.

Another place where excessive wear and tear can occur is at the front of the rear subframe. Among the shortcomings of the body, a small amount of rear space is distinguished. Despite the fact that, in comparison with the previous body, E39, there is more space, it is still not enough. The trunk is also small if we consider the E46 as a family car.

In general, the body of "BMW E46", the photo of which is located above, has a large margin of safety and resists corrosion for a long time. A car can bring much more problems with regard to the electrical part.

E46 electrical surprises

Like any other car from BMW, the E46 has an advanced electrical system. There are a large number of sensors and electronic units. In this case, the weak point in the "wiring - sensor" system is occupied, oddly enough, by wires. The harnesses of the engine compartment are especially affected. It happens that due to a faulty wiring, the cooling fans fail. Therefore, in the case of BMW E46, sensors are not always the cause of a breakdown. Before changing any electronic unit, you should carefully check the wiring.

Smart ignition keys can cause a lot of problems. E46 has two of them, main and spare. The whole trick, from which you can suffer without knowing the nuances, is that the keys are charged only while in the ignition. The built-in battery is not supplied separately, plus, after changing the key, it is necessary to undergo initialization. All these activities are not cheap, so you should use both keys alternately, keeping an eye on the charge level.

In the passenger compartment, the air conditioning control unit and the power window and mirrors control unit may fail. The BMW E46 stove has a heater motor, which is also at risk. One might get the impression that the E46 is just a "wreck" that is not even worth considering. But this is not the case. The point is that "weak points" are indicated, which most often fail. On a single machine, there may be no problems at all. For example, the car was regularly serviced and stored in a warm garage.

How to choose the best option "BMW E46"

In order to choose the best option for your beloved "BMW E46", reviews for which exceed all expectations, you should know the following main points.

1. When choosing an engine, it is better to give preference to 6-cylinder units. At the same time, given that the more powerful the motor, the greater the likelihood of more severe exploitation. Do not be afraid of the engine "eating up" the oil. For the E46 with mileage, adding 0.5 liters of engine oil for every 1000 km is considered the norm. If the oil consumption increases, it is worth contacting the service. If possible, you should not choose a car with N-series engines. These high-speed units, on the one hand, save fuel consumption. On the other hand, the engine overheats, which leads to early repairs.

2. BMW of any brand should not be afraid of automatic transmission. In some cases, an automatic transmission lasts longer than a manual one. Its reliability is really high, while the oil in the box still needs to be changed. Moreover, only high-quality products should be poured. Repair of the same box poured into a lump sum. Moreover, for the automatic version it may even be cheaper than for the "mechanics".

3. When choosing a car, do not rush. Knowing the options for weak points, you should explore all the possibilities and check the car in all possible conditions. To do this, try to ride at the first inspection. Don't be afraid to ask "uncomfortable" questions. It is better to show yourself from the disadvantageous side than to get into an unprofitable car.

4. It is important to remember that there are practically no damaged cars of the E46 series. Do not panic, nobody canceled body repair. At the same time, the appearance can differ significantly on different models. Wheels on the "BMW E46", carbon fiber interior inserts, various attachments raise the already magnificent view of the car to a new level.

The fourth generation of the BMW 3-Series e46 was put into production during the production of the past, namely in 1998. After, in 2002, she was restyled and it is about her that we will talk about in this review.

The model was produced until 2006, there were as many as 5 body versions: sedan, coupe, convertible, hatchback and station wagon. Of course, the sedan and coupe are among the most popular, but the rest can also be found.

Design

The appearance of the car has changed a lot, and for the better. Up front, we see an embossed bonnet, a branded chrome grille and new headlights. The optics have changed in shape, but a linsed filling has appeared. The modified massive bumper of the model still has black molding. There are air intakes with a chrome line, and the fog lights are recessed inward.

The side of the model stands out with rather strongly swollen arches. All the molding also remained in the middle of the body and the line also remains in the upper part. The impetuous shape of the body looks good, there are hints of sportiness.

The rear part is very much reminiscent of the previous generation, but the shape of the rear optics has changed. The headlights look great. There is also black molding on the rear bumper. The shape is essentially simple, but it looks great.

Sedan dimensions:

  • length - 4470 mm;
  • width - 1740 mm;
  • height - 1415 mm;
  • wheelbase - 2725 mm;
  • ground clearance - 130 mm.

The model has as many as 10 power units in its lineup, there are both weak versions and quite powerful ones. Most of the models are rear-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive models with the system have also appeared.

As you can imagine, they offered mainly gasoline engines, but there were also diesel options. Both 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines were offered, which can be atmospheric and turbocharged. Here is a list of aggregates:

  • N40B18;
  • N42B20;
  • M43TUB18;
  • M43TUB20;
  • M54B25;
  • M54B30;
  • S54B32;
  • M47B18;
  • M52TUB20;
  • M52TUB25;
  • M52TUB28;
  • M54B22;
  • M47B20;
  • M47TUB20.

The model received a fully independent suspension, MacPherson meets us in front, and a multi-link system in the back. The suspension is reliable, but not for our roads. It is also slightly harsh, but this is in favor of handling.

The reliability of the motors is not bad, but after 300,000 kilometers, serious problems begin and there are really a lot of them. As a gearbox, 5 and 6-speed mechanics are offered, and there is also a 5-speed hydromechanical automatic.

Interior of BMW 3-Series e46

The interior of the car has changed for the better. The quality of the cladding and assembly materials has grown quite high. The front seats have electrically adjustable leather upholstery. There is good lateral support and a relatively large amount of space. At the back there is a sofa, which is sheathed with leather, three people can fit there without any problems, but they will not be so comfortable. There is enough free space.

Installed a 3-wheel steering wheel with leather trim, which has received many buttons to control the audio system. Adjustment occurs both in height and in reach. The dashboard looks unfortunately not as modern as we would like, but nothing can be done about it. The dashboard has a lot of analog sensors and at the bottom of the lamp, signaling a malfunction of something.

The center console of the BMW 3-Series e46 in the upper part has two rectangular air deflectors, and under them there is a head unit with a large number of buttons, which is not bad for the modern world. In the same area, there are climate control adjustments. Underneath all this we see a box for little things.

There is another box on the tunnel, also of course a large gear selector. Near the handle are the window regulator buttons, unfortunately, they did not transfer them to the doors, which is more convenient. Below we can see a small alarm button and a box for small things. The model has, in principle, a good trunk with a volume of 439 liters.

Price

There are many options on the secondary market and finding this car is not a problem. On average, they are sold for 400,000 rubles, but if you are really thinking about buying, then look at the more expensive options. The fact is that many options are offered in poor condition and more or less live ones are much more expensive.

All in all, this is a great car for a young guy, which can be used for sports and for normal comfortable driving. But you should be careful, because as we have already said, there are many "dead" BMW 3-Series e46. The model is excellent, but in which case it will require a lot of investment.

Video

The coupe is presented in a variety of modifications, including 12 models of the usual "three" and two models of the M line. The coupe version does not fundamentally differ from the sedan, except for the shortened body, the number of doors and fewer body modifications.

History

The first model E46 coupe was released in 1999. Compared to the previous generation, the new body has become longer, wider and higher, and, accordingly, there is more space for passengers, even in a coupe body.

In 2003, the coupe was restyled, thanks to which the car received new front and rear lights, bumpers, as well as new body colors.

All body versions, except for the coupe, were discontinued in 2004-2005. The production of the coupe continued until 2006, after which the E46 was replaced by a new body - E92, as well as its convertible version - E93.

In 2002, the maximum number of copies was sold per year, namely 560 thousand. During the entire production period, more than 3,266 million copies were produced.

Specifications

The technical characteristics of the E46 coupe, like all BMW models, were based on engine modifications, transmissions and many other factors.

A photo of the E46 coupe is presented below.

Overview

Compared to the sedan's body, which looks too simple and hackneyed, the coupe does not lose its aggressive and attractive look to this day.

The first thing that catches your eye when you see the E46 is the design. BMW designers have done a great job making it memorable thanks to its radiator grilles, optics and many other details.

Compared to the previous generation E36, the suspension has been changed, which is slightly softer and quieter, which improves the car's handling.

As for the motors, there are more than enough of them. They can be divided into two groups: gasoline and diesel. The basic equipment is equipped with a 1.8-liter engine, while the top-end one is equipped with a 3-liter engine. On the new generation of "treshki" they began to put completely different modifications of engines, but some of them had the same power. Therefore, the engines began to be designated with certain numbers to distinguish them.

The drivetrain is top notch as always. Both mechanical and with proper handling can serve tens of thousands of kilometers without a single repair. But they, like everyone else, require attention. In the machine, it is worth changing the oil every 60 thousand kilometers. Also, the clutch, which is the connecting link of the transmission, is subject to regular replacement. For an untimely change of the coupling, a number of problems may appear, due to which the cost of repairs will increase significantly.

Since the time of the E46 sedan, in the E46 coupe, the suspension began to partially consist of aluminum, namely: levers, ball joints, shock absorber mounts and many other elements. According to the owners, the ball joint usually serves no more than 40,000 kilometers, then the entire lever must be replaced. The total cost of the replacement is about 340 euros (26,000 rubles).

Restyling E46 Coupe

In 2001, the sedan was restyled. Later, in 2003, the coupe body was also redesigned. After him, new engine modifications, electronic filling and much more were added to the coupe.

The appearance of the car has also undergone changes. The headlights now have a bezel edge that will appeal to all car enthusiasts. The hood has become a little wider in width, the outer corner of the headlights has become more pointed and directed upwards.

The bumper has also undergone a change - two fog lights were integrated into it.

Also, all technical flaws of the pre-styling version were corrected, including the suspension, body and much more.

In the restyled version, the central panel has acquired a large monitor with a navigation system. The inserts above the glove compartment and the door of the "BMW E46" coupe have aluminum and wood design.

The instrument panel is equipped with a speedometer, tachometer, fuel level and oil temperature. Below, between the speedometer and the tachometer, there is a monitor that displays the total mileage of the car, the current mileage, as well as the temperature overboard.

The gear lever was common for BMW production cars of that time. To the left and right of it are the buttons for opening and closing the side windows. Below there is an emergency button and a place for a parking brake.

Standard multimedia includes speakers throughout the cabin, and the restyled version has two subwoofers.

For greater safety, BMW designers have made the body more durable, which improves the car's handling. Also in the cabin there are airbags: for the driver - behind the horn, for the front passenger - on the left of the deflector located in front of the passenger seat.

The steering wheel is three-spoke, the lower spoke is divided into two. On the left of the steering wheel there are volume buttons, switching radio stations, as well as a notebook. On the right is the speedometer reading. Some models have shift paddles. On the right is an increase, on the left is a decrease. But such models are rare and are much more expensive than usual ones.

Owners of various BMW cars often knock on our editorial office so that we publish their reviews about their cars. We decided to open a section "BMW Reviews", in which we will publish your reviews. Today our guest is a BMW 3 Series in the back of E46.

Average rating of the car according to the website version

9 out of 10

Why a solid nine and not a 10? It is not reliable and safe enough. All the same, time passes, and this car is already obsolete. Finding a live, well-maintained BMW 3 Series in the back of an E46 is almost impossible. And if there is money for an E46 in good condition, it might be worth looking at an E92? In principle, you cannot order your heart, and if you are a fan of this particular car, read the reviews about it below.

  • Appearance: ★★★★ ☆
  • Comfort: ★★★★★
  • Security: ★★★★ ☆
  • Reliability: ★★★★ ☆
  • Driving performance: ★★★★★

You can watch a video of how this three-ruble note drives and possible tuning on the page "".

Weak spots:

  1. The automatic transmission often breaks down and flies in a pretty penny;
  2. Bottom. From our winters, during which the snow is sprinkled with a reagent, the bottom literally corrodes, so it's better to come up with something for the winter.

Review of Artyom, owner of BMW Coupe E46 325 2002

“Honestly, I did not expect anything supernatural from buying this car. The previous Mercedes S500 broke down, and to repair it - to add as much as it costs. So I decided not to mess around, sell it for half the price and buy a second German car. The choice fell on the 3 series, and it was the E46. I really like its appearance, and in St. Petersburg there are a lot of them ... If there are a lot of them, then the cars are not bad.

I went to Avito and began to choose the normal options. I am often asked why the all-wheel drive 325, and not the cheap 318, or the diesel 330, and so, I was just lucky to stumble upon a 325 in good condition.

Looked at 15 options, they were all wrong. Either the power steering is broken, the door does not open well, or it is painted slop with a bunch of minor problems. Already a little upset and wanted to stop thinking about BMW and return to the usual Mercedes, but suddenly I came across an ad in the suburbs from a married couple. I went to Len. region.

I was greeted by a nice-looking man over 40, gave me the keys and allowed me to drive around their site. Was I thrilled to drive? Oh yeah! This car is made for the driver.

Driving it is a pleasure: smooth, but at the same time, a sharp skid is not a problem. It feels like this three-ruble note has a soul. You can feel its power.

I took without hesitation for 300 thousand rubles, went home happy. I tried to drift, miraculously escaped 🙂 It takes time to get used to. "

Review of Roma, the owner of a diesel BMW 3 330D 2003

“In short: after this car I don’t want to get into others. Generally. No, maybe I'll buy myself a new one in a couple of years, but it will definitely be a BMW. There are, of course, small joints that you have to put up with, but this car is already 10 years old, so everything is fine.

I'm not one of those people who buys a car to "drift" or to drive in the city. When I was young, I was already catching up on my previous E36.

Why did you change it? Yes, she got tired and the bottom rotted, almost fell off. And I didn't want to buy "grandfather's" cars like Toyota Prios. I needed a car that I wouldn’t be ashamed to show and that it would be nice to get into. The choice fell on the E46.

I have a family: two daughters and a wife, so I bought a sedan. Initially, I wanted to take the diesel version, it was more economical, and everything turned out fine - the seller literally found me himself. I threw an ad on auto forums saying that I wanted to buy a diesel sedan in Moscow within 400,000 rubles. I was immediately offered 330 configurations for 380 thousand, and I went to watch.

When you get into a BMW (except for the 7 Series), you realize that this car is made for you. It is convenient for me to reach out to everything there is. I sit comfortably, nothing bothers me, and I am relaxed.

As soon as we started, I literally felt the engine. We drove along the Moscow Ring Road and I pressed lightly on the gas - I was pleasantly pressed into the chair. I called my wife and said I’m taking it. Took for 350 - bargained. I'm ok. However, the oil leaks slightly, so I often visit the service station. "

Review of Slava, owner of the sedan BMW 3 318 1999

“I bought my swallow back in 1999, as soon as I turned 20. We didn’t see anything with her: rust, problems with oil, and a breakdown of the machine. In general, for her age she was well preserved, and I think there were not many problems. Compared, for example, with the cars of my friends who have not lived even 5 years.

When people ask me why I bought a BMW 3 E46 and not a Mercedes W 140 popular at the time, I say that I revised the Boomer.

By youth, he was wildly mad. Nothing to regret.
Now the fourth series has come out, in the back of a coupe. Here I will take it. "

“This BMW is my first car. I'm 18, I barely persuaded my parents to buy me a model in the E46 body, because the E36 looks too old, and there is no money for the E92 ... And the girls will not approve 😉

I, in principle, have nothing to compare with (except that my father's Chevrolet Niva), but I like the car. I have never regretted that I bought it.

Already a couple of times I gave a lift to unfamiliar girls, the end was predictable (if you know what I mean).

The leather seats are pleasantly crushed if you press a little on the gas pedal.

However, there is one "but" - the traffic cops did not stop me in my father's car at all, and now literally every other time. Maybe they have such a reaction to all BMWs? "

Reviewed by Ilya, owner of a 2005 BMW M3 330

“Personally, I was not very lucky with this car. I bought it from my hands, the owner swore that there were no problems at all and had served without breakdowns for about 5 years (according to TCP, 3 owners). He said that he drove only in Germany on the Autobahn, and did not see the E46 Russian roads.

Of course, it was vaguely believed, but common sense does not work here - as soon as you sit in it, you immediately forget about all the problems and your face breaks into a smile.

I took it, came home, and immediately there was an unpleasant hum. I went to see a friend in the garage, he said that my automatic box is cranky, needs to be changed. And it costs about 100,000 rubles along with the repair. Upset, yes. But now it seems to be going fine, but the first impression is hard to forget. BMW 3 E46 is my everyday car "

My rating: 6.5 out of 10

Judging by the reviews, the BMW 3 Series in the back of the E46 is an ideal everyday car, with relatively cheap parts and good drive when driving.
