Parameters of car tires for VAZ 2109. Which tires are better for the "nine?" Large disc elements

VAZ 2109 - 5-door front-wheel drive hatchback, produced at the Volga Automobile Plant. In comparison with the "related" VAZ-2108, the model was positioned as more "solid" and was intended for a family man, since it was endowed with a less expressive appearance and 5 doors. For the characteristic contours of the body, the car was often called a "chisel".

"Nine" represents class B. The main competitors of the model include Skoda Felicia and Renault 19. The Russian car lost to its "classmates" in reliability, but was much more affordable.

The peak of popularity of the VAZ 2109 fell on the 90s. Then the production of the model opened in Belgium and Finland. However, soon the release of the "nine" in these countries stopped. In 2004, the model was discontinued at the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. Until 2011, the VAZ 2109 was produced in Ukraine.

Sales of the "nine" started in 1987. Outwardly, the model almost completely repeated the VAZ-2108, differing from it only in the number of doors. The car has remained the same style: angular body features, a relatively slight slope of the windshield, a large protruding bumper and noticeable rectangular headlights. Despite the similar design and dimensions, "nine" and "eight" were fundamentally different machines. The width of the front doors in the VAZ-2109 was reduced by almost 250 mm. In the exterior of the model, the swiftness of the lines was guessed, but the sportiness became much less.

Salon "nine" was extremely practical. At the same time, the developers managed to increase the comfort indicators. The car now has a "low" dashboard, which has become more convenient. The front seats received head restraints, and the upper belt anchorage points were height-adjustable. Padded upholstery and fabric seats, available as an option, added prestige to the model. The folded rear seats were made from the VAZ-2109 like a station wagon. The cabin had ventilation and heating systems.

The first modernization of the car took place in 1989. The front part of the body was slightly refined. The whole restyling consisted in the transition to the "long" front fenders, replacing the "short" version. In 1990, the model received a new 1.5-liter engine (72 hp). The upgraded version was named VAZ-21093. It was this modification that became the most popular. By the mid-1990s, 1.1- and 1.3-liter engines were excluded from the line of power units. Engines were combined with 5-speed gearboxes.

Another restyling of the model took place in 1995. They stopped melting the radiator grill. The last cosmetic improvement of the VAZ-2109 happened in 1997. More than the car has not changed.

Sizes of discs and tires

Regardless of the modification, the "nine" could be equipped with the following types of tires and disks:

  • wheels 5J by 13 ET40 (5 - width in inches, 13 - diameter in inches, 40 - positive offset in mm), tires - 165 / 70R13 (165 - tire width in mm, 70 - profile height in%, 13 - rim diameter in inches);
  • wheels 4.5J for 13 ET40, tires - 155 / 80R13;
  • 5.5J wheels for 13 ET40, tires - 175 / 70R13;
  • wheels 5J for 14 ET40, tires - 175 / 65R14;
  • 5.5J wheels for 14 ET37, tires - 185 / 60R14;
  • wheels 6J for 14 ET35, tires - 185 / 60R14.

Other characteristics of the VAZ-2109 wheels:

  • PCD (drilling) - 4 by 98 (4 - the number of holes, 98 - the diameter of the circle on which they are located in mm);
  • fasteners - M12 by 1.25 (12 - stud diameter in mm, 1.25 - thread size);
  • central hole diameter - 58.5 mm;
  • tire pressure - 1.9-2 bar.

VAZ 2109 belongs to the Lada "Sputnik" family - a five-door modification of the previous model 2108 from the Lada "Sputnik" family.

From the factory conveyor, classic models came out with standard stamped steel alloy rims:

  • 4 1 / 2J-13;
  • 4 1 / 2J-13H2;
  • 5 J-13H2.

Before decrypting the marking, you need to figure out what technical dimensions and parameters of car disks are accepted. Regardless of the manufacturing method, cast or stamped - their designation is carried out in an identical way. On the outer surface there is a stamp that displays all the necessary amount of information.

This includes:

  • the name of the manufacturing plant;
  • the state where the release took place;
  • date (on a week / year basis, example: 1815 - 18 week of 2015);
  • X-ray scan marking (light-alloy cast products are checked for internal cracks and defects);
  • sizes;
  • control department mark (for Russia - ROSTEST, for Germany - TUV, international organization - ISO, for America - SAE, etc.);
  • heat number and allowable load (lb (lb), kg, example: max load 1800LB - maximum pressure up to 1800 lbs or 816 kg).

More about standard sizes

All over the world it is customary to use the European designation system. For example, simple wheels for "tubeless" on the VAZ-2109 - 4 1/2 J-13H2 ET30.

  • J - coded parameters for the side flange of the rim in mm (this includes radii of roundings, angles of inclination, etc.). This clause includes a list of dimensions for obtaining a highly specialized opinion when conducting technical tests. There are other categories - D, E, F, etc.

  • H2 - double hump or annular overhang of the HUMP rim flange (it keeps the tubeless tire from slipping). There are also such options for humps - H (simple), A (asymmetric), CH (combined), FH (flat).

13 - landing diameter in inches.

The drawing below clearly shows the main parameters for the structure of the arrangement of technological holes and protrusions.

  • ET30 or ET + 30 - wheel offset in mm. The dimensions of the distances between the middle of the disc width and the mating plane (where the disc and the hub are in contact) are indicated, respectively equal to 30 mm. Based on where the product is manufactured, the marking changes to OFFSET (negative) or DEPORT (positive).

With a minus value, a designation with a similar sign is carried out, for example "-ET30".

Rim Mount Values (Bolt Patterns)

When installing, it is important to take into account the landing size that the manufacturer advises, since differences may be due to different systems of calculation (metric or imperial).

  • The diameter distance between the fastener holes is designated as PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter). The adopted scheme for the VAZ-2109 looks like 4x98 or PCD 98/4, i.e. between the central axes of the bolts (in the amount of 4 pieces) 98 mm.
  • Fasteners - metric thread M12x1.25 (bolt stud diameter 12 mm and thread pitch 1.25 mm).
  • The central hole for the hub shaft on the disc is designated as DIA and for the VAZ-2109 it is equal to 58.5 mm.

Important! Often, car enthusiasts confuse PCD values due to a difference of only a couple of mm. For example, the standard size for two central holes is just a visually imperceptible deviation of 2 mm - this is PCD for 4/98 and 100. Only 1 bolt will turn out to be completely tightened, and the remaining 3 will be under-tightened, which will ultimately lead to an emergency.

Installation of wheel disks on R14, 15 on the VAZ-2109 model

The standard wheel with the parameters 175/70 R13 does not differ in special visual "nobility", in comparison with the enlarged version of the R14 or R15. This is due to the high height of the rubber profile, which visually "obscures" the already small dimensions of the disc.

The technical features of the VAZ-2109 model provide for the installation of disks of the R14 and R15 categories - forged or cast light-alloy. In width, the discs can be from 5 to 6 inches with a characteristic overhang from 35 to 40 mm. The rest of the values for PCD and DIA correspond to 4x98 with a center connector diameter of 58.5 mm.

In this case, the selection of rubber must be carried out so that the total diameter of the wheel is within the standard value. Failure to comply with this condition will lead to the fact that during the turn, the tire will begin to wipe the wheel arch liners and suspension parts.

Settlement method

Based on the rubber characteristics of a standard 175/70 wheel with a radius of R13, where:

  • the values 175 and 70 are the values of the tire width and tire height in percent;
  • multiply 175x0.7 with each other, we get 122.5 mm;
  • the actual disc diameter R13 is 13x25.39 will be 330 mm.

To find out the total diameter of the wheel, you need to add the two obtained values, but the profile height is doubled, i.e. (122.5x2) adds up to 330 to make 575 mm.

According to the same principle, calculations are carried out for a more visual perception, for example: for models 175 / 70R13, 175 / 65R14 and 185 / 60R14, 575, 583 and 577 mm come out, respectively.

The last value will be most suitable for the VAZ-2109, since it is 10 mm wider in width. This will reduce the braking distance during operation, add controllability, and reduce rubber wrinkling when cornering at high speed. Fuel consumption will be slightly increased, but potholes and bumps on the road will be less noticeable.

Maximum and minimum parameters of non-standard disks

Design engineers of the Togliatti Automobile Plant do not particularly "welcome" the installation of wheel disks with a radius of R15, but there is no direct reason not to do so.

The problem lies in the difficulty of performing this operation without the involvement of specialists; the intervention of qualified craftsmen is necessary. The reason for this is the "conflict" of rear arches and suspension parts with new rims, and in some cases it is necessary to violate the factory design of the transmission.

Note! We should not forget about the mandatory technical inspection, and how the traffic police will look at such an "upgrade".

A suitable rubber size for R15 wheels is 185/55 and even 195/50, but most likely that such a large width will cause rubbing along the arch. Below are the recommended discs for modifications to the VAZ-2109.

Table characteristics for the selection of disks

Diameter R13

Diameter R14

Diameter R15

The most suitable size wheels are 14 inches (R14). As mentioned above, it is allowed to install 15-inch ones, but with low-profile rubber. In this version, the stem should be in a gap between 30-35 mm, and tire models will fit in this category: 185/55 or 195/50.

Large R15 tires such as 195/55 or 205/50 are suitable for front axle mounting. In order to insert them on the rear axle, a constructive improvement in the suspension structure and an increase in the wheel arches will be required. The optimal dimensions for installation on a VAZ-2109 are models 185/60 for R14 and 195/50 for R15.

On the ninth model of the fret, it is beneficial to carry out external tuning to replace the wheels, since this method is budgetary. It can be done without any problems in-house, if you do not try to mount very large rims.

Is it possible to install R14 wheels (or even more) on the VAZ-2109? How will this affect the behavior of the car and will there be problems with the traffic police?

Wheels with a tire diameter of 14 inches can be installed on the "VAZ" "Samara". But at the same time, other dimensions of the disc (width and offset) should not exceed certain values, otherwise in turns and at the maximum load of the car, the wheels will touch the wheel arches and suspension elements. The "bottleneck" of the VAZ-2108, -09, -099 is the rear arches and suspension, which often "conflict" with oversized wheels.

For Samar, stamped steel discs 5 or 5.5 inches wide with an offset (parameter ET) of 38 - 40 mm are suitable. Light-alloy wheels can also be installed. In this case, the disc width should be 6 inches and the ET should be 33 or 35 mm. In this case, a tire with a dimension of 175/65 R14 is used - for example, such as in the factory configuration of a VAZ-2110 or Skoda Fabia. It is possible to use tires with a width of 165 and 185 mm.

In addition, installation on "nines" and "eights" and 15-inch wheels is allowed - provided that discs with ET equal to 30 - 35 mm are used, and with sufficiently low-profile tires 185/55 R15. The "eights" also drive with 195/50 R15 wheels. But even more "cool" tires 195/55 R15 and 205/50 R15 are installed only on the front axle or simultaneously with the modification of the suspension or wheel arches.

Based on the operating experience of the "overhauled" "Samar" we can say that the recommended tire size for R15 rims is 195/50, and for R14 - 185/60.

Let us also remind that for any "VAZ" disks the diameter of the circle of the location of the four mounting bolts (PSD) is 98 mm, which is coded as 4x98 in the catalogs. The diameter of the central hole in the discs for Togliatti machines should not be less than 58.5 mm.

Fitting low-profile tires improves the vehicle's handling when maneuvering and speeds up cornering. Low tire beads crumple less under lateral loads on the tire, and the steering wheel becomes "sharper", and the car deviates less from the trajectory. But such wheels absorb the defects of the roadway worse and transfer more shock loads to the body when driving over bumps. In addition, a tire with a low profile, even when driving through a pothole at low speed, is easy to "punch" to a disc, the edge of which can be crumpled up to complete failure.

It is worth noting that road traffic regulations prohibit the use of vehicles with tires that “do not fit the vehicle model”. However, the practice of operating tuned VAZs testifies that traffic police officers usually have no complaints about 14-inch wheels - obviously, due to the fact that “14” disks at the plant are equipped with “Lada-2110”, similar in chassis to “eights” and “ nines ". But with fifteen-inch wheels, the likelihood of "running into" trouble during the inspection is higher.

Replacing discs is a natural step for owners of any car. Even those who prefer to drive factory wheels will not be able to use them forever. And when the old ones fall into disrepair, the question arises - what to buy to replace them.

Views

Analyzing the wheel rim market, the entire range can be divided into three types:

  • Steel stamped;
  • Light alloy cast;
  • Light alloy forged.

Many cars, including the VAZ 2109, were equipped with stamped discs from the factory. Outwardly, they are completely unattractive; over time, they lose their external characteristics. Let's be honest, this is a relic of the past.

But at the same time, steel stampings have their own advantages, due to which this type of disc is still produced and is in impressive demand among consumers:

  • Affordable price. These are the cheapest options available today;
  • High strength indicators. Considering the quality of our roads, many people think primarily about the quality, safety, and not external data;
  • Reliability. They will not have to be changed almost every season, which results in impressive savings;
  • Under strong impacts, the stampings do not break or crack. The maximum is crumpled, which opens up opportunities for restoration, restoration;
  • Easy to remove and change without assistance.

But let's be honest to the end. For all their positive qualities, the disgusting appearance makes car owners abandon reliability and durability in favor of the image and external appeal. And do not think that light-alloy options are absolutely fragile and break only from one type of pit.

Light alloy

If we talk about light alloy wheels, then they are made, you guessed it, from special light alloys.

In total, three types of alloys are used.

Alloy type

Features of the

Titanium

An excellent choice in all respects, except for cost. These are the most expensive light-alloy wheels, which, nevertheless, serve a long time, reliably, and look simply excellent.

Aluminum

Many people put aluminum alloy in the first place, taking into account the external characteristics, strength indicators and availability. An important plus of aluminum is that it is not afraid of corrosion. When used properly, the aluminum alloy will last for a long time and maintain the beautiful appearance of the vehicle.

When choosing alloy wheel sets, be sure to compare their strengths and weaknesses. Appearance is far from the only criterion that you need to pay attention to when buying.

Advantages and disadvantages of light alloy

When compared to steel rims, the choice of alloy options provides car owners with a fairly extensive list of benefits. But it is also important to know about the cons.

Benefits

disadvantages

  • Attractive, modern appearance that makes the discs stand out from competitors and monotonous stampings;
  • Reduces the weight of the unsprung part;
  • Allows you to implement original design ideas;
  • Effectively cools the brake assembly;
  • During manufacturing, the maximum accuracy is observed, which has a positive effect on balancing, tire wear;
  • During production, they are covered with anti-corrosion compounds, which allows you not to be afraid of driving even on snowy roads strewn with salt or other reagents
  • The material is quite fragile, therefore, with strong impacts, cracks appear or the disc breaks altogether;
  • It is impossible to repair light-alloy products, unlike stamped steel;
  • You can damage the disc in the simplest situation, for example, when parking the car;
  • When choosing products from dubious manufacturers, there is a high probability of getting into a factory defect;
  • Disks do not dampen shocks, from which the suspension of the car suffers more, additional loads act on it

Operating rules

  1. Try to avoid bumps, which requires more careful driving.
  2. Park carefully, watch carefully where you park your car.
  3. Avoid driving over pits, potholes. This is dangerous for a car with any wheels, but if the stamping can still be restored later, the light alloy will have to be sent to a landfill.
  4. When driving on rails, do not pick up high speed. Hitting metal can provoke not only deformation of the discs, but also damage to the suspension.

Marking and parameters

There are three types of markings indicated on the rims:

  • European;
  • Russian;
  • American.

The difference between them is not significant, plus the information is always indicated the same, only sometimes with different designation methods.

When choosing wheels for the VAZ 2109, you need to adhere to the choice of products with the following parameters.

Parameter

Features and requirements

Here we are talking about rim width and diameter. For nines, it is relevant to use discs where the diameter and width of the rim have the following parameters - 5.5 by 13.5, 5.5 by 14, or 6 by 14 inches. It is possible to install discs with a large diameter, only this will affect the technical characteristics, control complexity, fuel consumption and other parameters

This is the number of holes for fixing the disc and the distance between them. For VAZ 2109, the required parameter is 98/4

This is the diameter of the center hole. In the VAZ 2109, it is 58.1 mm

This is a crash. Requires +40. Taking shorter offset discs will increase traction, resulting in tighter steering, accelerated wheel bearing wear and increased fuel consumption.

Focus on these key parameters when choosing a new kit. Plus, don't forget about the role of the quality of the products themselves.

When choosing a set of new stampings or light alloy, be sure to pay attention to the following points.

  1. All alloy wheels must be certified, supplemented with a quality mark and X-ray control.
  2. All discs must have a mark of the supervisory authority and a document confirming that the discs have passed quality control and compliance with current standards.
  3. The product indicates the maximum allowable load that the disc can handle.
  4. The name and other data about the manufacturer are quite obvious information that you can and should read on the disk.
  5. Product heat number, production method, marking and production date. If not, look for the kit in another store. This is clearly a fake or questionable batch.

Storage rules

Many car owners purchase two sets of discs, one of which is used in winter and the other in summer. This allows you not to throw rubber from one set to another every time.

But if you leave the wheels in the garage or elsewhere for a long time, you risk losing their original quality, since the storage rules were not followed.

And they are quite simple.

  1. Don't just drop the kit somewhere in the corner where there is space.
  2. Before storing, mark the wheels so you know where is front left, rear right, and so on.
  3. Store wheels only in a dry, cool and dark place. There should be no chemicals, gasoline, oil in the immediate vicinity of the tires. These components are capable of destroying the structure of the wheels over time, therefore their service life is noticeably reduced.
  4. If tires are stored with discs, do not keep them in a standing position. Hang or place horizontally. Many experts advise using wooden pallets.
  5. If the rubber is stored separately, it is placed vertically. Moreover, the tires should be rotated once a month so that the pressure does not deform the compound. Do not hang or stack tires one on top of the other.
  6. Before storing, inspect the projectors, remove any pebbles, stuck pebbles.
  7. Check the condition of the wheels carefully before installing them for a new season.

Wheel rims are not just a visual decoration for a car. In many respects, safety, reliability of the suspension, fuel consumption and a number of other parameters depend on their quality and correct choice.

Let's face it, the standard VAZ 2109 wheels with dimensions 175/70 R13 visually do not look particularly impressive. It's all about the high profile height of the rubber with a visually small diameter of the disc itself. Therefore, motorists often have a question: is it possible to put on a VAZ 2109 discs of a larger diameter, 14 or even 15 inches without compromising the characteristics of the car and passing the next inspection? You will find the answer to this question by reading this article.

Is it possible to install R14 or R15 wheels on a VAZ 2109

So, you can install R14 rims on VAZ 2109, 2108, 21099, 2114, 2115. In this case, the parameters of the disk should be 5, 5.5 or 6 inches in width, and have a projection of 35-40 mm. Can be delivered with the same parameters. Other parameters of the discs: holes 4x98 mm, diameter of the central hole not less than 58.5 mm.

At the same time, it will be necessary to select a rubber of the appropriate size so that the overall diameter of the wheel remains approximately the same. Otherwise, when turning the wheel, the tire will touch the wheel arch liners or suspension elements, which, of course, we do not need.

How to make the necessary calculations

The admissible dimensions of tires on 14-inch wheels are 175/65 R14 and 185/60 R14. Moreover, the second option is preferable.

However, the diameter of a wheel can be calculated very simply if you know how the characteristics of rubber are deciphered. We will do this for the VAZ 2109.

Let's take a standard wheel 175/70 R13.
175 - tire width in millimeters;
70 - the height of the rubber profile as a percentage of the width, that is, in our case
175 x 0.70 = 122.5 mm

Disc diameter 13 inches = 13 x 25.4 = 330 mm.

The total wheel diameter is the sum of the disc diameter and two profile heights.
Total 330 + 122.5 x 2 = 575 mm.

Having made the calculations in a similar way, we get the following figures for comparison:

  • 175/70 R13 - 575 mm;
  • 175/65 R14 - 583 mm;
  • 185/60 R14 - 577 mm.

We see that the last option is the most suitable. It is also 10 mm wider, which will provide us with a shorter braking distance due to an increased contact with the road, better handling, resistance to breaking of rubber in corners at high speeds due to a reduced profile height. But at the same time, a wide tire is more prone to aquaplaning at high speed than a tire of the same parameters, but narrower. Also, the impacts from passing road potholes will be more strongly transmitted to the body of a car with wheels of low profile height.

Wheel selection table

In confirmation of their words, data on permissible wheel rim sizes can be found in the factory.

Wheel rims of a larger radius, for example, 15 inches in diameter, will also fit the Samara, but they are not recommended by the factory, therefore there may be problems with the passage of the technical engine. For such wheels, you should choose tires with a dimension of 185/55 R15. 195/50 R15 will pass with a stretch, but it is better to play it safe and try on if your friends have similar ones. In this case, the wheel may “rub” due to the too large rubber width.
