Preparing the car for the winter. Body treatment. Check if your car is ready for the winter season: tips and tricks The most important thing is adherence to technology

The winter period is not only a real test of the driver's skills, but also a serious test of the reliability of the car itself. In order for the "iron horse" not to let you down and to work one hundred percent in the winter, you need to prepare it in time for a strong frost, strong wind and sharp temperature changes.

Due to non-processing of some parts of the car, "wintering" can give trouble in the form of chips and dents, peeling of the coating, worn glass, headlights and many other negative phenomena. Pre-winter treatment will keep the car parts intact, and the family budget from unforeseen repair costs.

Preparing the car for winter

The technical preparation of the vehicle consists of several stages:

  • Antifreeze. Before cold weather, you need to check the condition of the coolant, you should understand whether it meets the requirements and whether the property has been lost. Usually, the substance changes about once every three years, however, there are cases of buying a "left" liquid, which loses its quality much faster. The coolant must be of a specific color: red, yellow or green. The structure should be uniform and transparent. Today, blue antifreeze is almost never used. If antifreeze is cloudy or lumps are found in it, a replacement should be made. There is an even easier way of recognizing the suitability: if the liquid has a soapy consistency to the touch, then it is fine.
  • Brake fluid. If you do not check it often as required by the rules, at one fine moment in winter, it can freeze and present you with a surprise on the road. Brake hoses can burst while driving, make sure that the brake fluid is also in order.
  • Battery. Before persistent cold weather sets in, check it for water level and electrolyte density. This is in those cases. If you operate your car on a daily basis. In the event of rare trips out of the garage, it is best to remove the appliance and store it in a heated room.

Protective coatings for the body

There are several options for pre-winter preparation here. To protect your car, its body and paintwork, you should focus on the service life of the car. The new car can be treated with anti-hologram polishing. This is necessary for stronger and more effective protection against the ingress of dirt, preservatives and substances that sprinkle the roads on the body.

If your car is not new, you can protect it from the winter cold and from the ingress of all kinds of reagents by abrasive polishing and then treating it with a protective layer.

In order to determine how vulnerable the body coating is, you should contact a specialist who, by measuring the thickness of the coating and visual diagnostics, will help find flaws and eliminate them. It is imperative that before polishing, if it is necessary, you should wash the car using a two-stage wash, after which the owner of the vehicle decides which coating to use to protect the body.

Among world brands, the following manufacturers stand out for the quality of the compositions:

  • Ceramic PRO 9H,
  • Mega Trend,
  • Advance.

The use of these compounds returns the gloss of gloss to the body and reliably protects it from water and dirt, corrosive stains.

Scratches on the body are treated with a wax pencil, which you can easily buy at any car dealership. The bottom needs a careful inspection, our roads do not differ in quality, therefore, in the newest car from the passenger compartment, anticorrosive is instantly erased in winter. If you find any abrasions, immediately spray the bottom of the machine with an anti-corrosion agent. You can do this yourself or in the salon.

Wheel arches are subject to the greatest damage from various chemical and mechanical factors, in particular from reagents, sand, chips, small stones flying from under the wheels. The best way to protect mechanisms and arches is a proven remedy - fenders. If they fit in shape and correspond to quality, you will not find a more reliable product. In places where they are attached to the body, use mastic or other similar means.

Your mobile first aid kit

In winter, anything can happen on the road, and it is not a fact that an unforeseen event will occur within the city. In case of a forced stop, towing, heating, the driver must have a mobile emergency first aid kit, consisting of important and necessary things:

  • high-voltage cable, which may be required to "resuscitate" the car if the battery is not working;
  • LED flashlight;
  • a set of tools for minor repairs;
  • a mandatory warning sign of an emergency stop;
  • compressor that inflates tires;
  • shovel and various brushes and scrapers;
  • it is good to have a heated seat in the car that can save you if an unexpected stop happens in a severe frost;
  • cable so that you can tow the car;
  • silicone grease, especially relevant when the gas tank hatch or doors freeze;
  • warm gloves and pieces of cardboard that can help out when slipping.
  • in order to contact technical assistance or relatives, you must have a phone charger.

Important! This whole kit is not so expensive, but it is able to help you out in extreme situations in winter conditions on the road with an emergency stop.

Should you wash your car in winter?

Winter car wash is a rather controversial issue. Of course, it is worth keeping the body clean, as the mud mixture harms your car much more than in the summer. It is believed that the frequency of washing should be in winter at least once every 14 days. Wheel arches and sills are washed especially thoroughly, since the former get a mud mixture from reagents and dirt.

Note! There are some restrictions and recommendations. Car manufacturers believe that it is not worthwhile to arrange a bath for cars in winter if the temperature outside is below -5 degrees.

This is due to the fact that the car's paintwork may be damaged. Do not wash if it is frosty outside, corrosion will freeze up anyway, as it is afraid of low temperatures.

Winter car care

An ideal option would be to park your car in a warm garage, but not everyone has this opportunity. There are underground car parks at supermarkets or other public centers, it is best to leave your car there. Given the constant presence of the vehicle on the street, there are several practical tips for caring for the winter.

  • Do not scrub the windshield with a scraper until it thaws, this will lead to damage and microcracks. To speed up the thawing process, there are special sprays.
  • Raise the wipers when there is heavy snowfall or wet precipitation outside, when temperatures change to frost, they can freeze to the glass. They must be thawed naturally.
  • Disable the automatic folding of the side mirrors. In severe frost, they may freeze one day and not return to their normal position.
  • Spray door handles, all locks, door seals with silicone spray. It is sold to households. and car dealerships and costs a penny. This will save mechanisms and parts from freezing. This procedure is especially important after washing the car.
  • It is recommended to renew the protective coating once a year before the onset of winter. This will ensure that negative damage is avoided. If the processing is done with high quality and good materials, for a long period your car will be under reliable protection from winter hardships, and its operation will not bring you any problems.

Remember, the cleaner your car is in winter, the more likely it is to last for a long time and to look decent. Take care of your car, regardless of the season and weather conditions, then it will give you its maximum comfort, attractiveness and speed capabilities.

Winter is a time of trials. Tests by frost, slush, snow blizzards, temperature extremes, road reagents. Every autumn we prepare our wardrobe and shoes to meet the harshest seasons of the year: we treat shoes with water-repellent agents, anti-salt compounds, we buy warm winter clothes ... Our car needs the same preparation and protection as much as we ourselves.

During their work, the specialists of the Center for Professional Detailing Advance Star saw many unpleasant consequences of "wintering" cars: peeling paint, chips, scratches and dents on the body from sand, gravel and stones flying from under the wheels of cars, rubbing and damage to the surface of glasses, mirrors and headlights after removing frozen snow and ice, faded discs , muddy headlights ... All this can be avoided by preparing your "iron horse" in advance for use in winter.

Especially at this time, the body paintwork suffers, which is experiencing dangerous pressure from several fronts at once. First of all, these are road reagents, generously sprinkled by road services on the roads. Perfectly dissolving snow and ice, they become the main cause of metal corrosion and clouding of varnish on the body. It seems that there is a way out - frequent visits to car washes. But even here a terrible danger lurks - many car washes use cheap aggressive chemicals that can cause even more damage to the body.

the consequences of some car washes

And finally, the third aggressor for our car is ourselves! Yes Yes! Sweeping snow from the body with car brushes, we mercilessly scratch the body paintwork, noticing the consequences only in the spring on a clean car, illuminated by the sun's rays.

All this can be avoided by preparing your "iron horse" for winter operation. And our professionals and modern detailing technologies will help you with this.

Body treatment before winter.

Pre-winter car treatment is mainly to protect the body and its paintwork. As a rule, a light anti-hologram polishing is required for a new car, which will clean the body from various preservatives and contaminants so that the adhesion of the body paint layer with the protective coating composition is the strongest and most effective. For a car that has already been operated in difficult Russian conditions, the best solution would be abrasive polishing followed by protection.

Everything is individual. What kind of body treatment your car needs for the winter will be shown by a professional inspection and assessment of our specialists. After visual inspection, using a special device, the thickness of the paintwork is measured. Depending on its condition, a decision is made on the scope of further restoration and protective work. In any case, the procedure for preparing the body before winter includes the correct two-phase washing, refurbishing polishing and applying a protective coating. Which one - you decide, based on our recommendations and your wishes. We offer our clients the best formulations from well-known world manufacturers - Ceramic PRO 9H, Mega Trend, Advance. Together with reliable protection, they will give the body a beautiful glossy sheen and provide a stable hydrophobic effect. All this will make your car trips even more pleasant and comfortable.

  1. In winter, it is not advisable to ride on all-season tires. They are labeled AW and AS (Any Weather and All Seasons). But, despite the labeling, they can be called all-season only for warm and little snow European winters. For severe Russian frosts, it is better to use tires specially designed for such conditions, with indices: Winter (W) ("Winter"), M + S (Mud + Snow - "Dirt + Snow"). Quite often, next to such markings, you can see the image of a snowflake or cloud. When using such tires, the car will be stable on the winter road, and the ride will be comfortable and safe.
  2. Often the question arises about the use of studded rubber. First, you need to decide on the preferred routes of movement. If most often you are within the city, on cleaned and salted roads, then the use of studded tires is not rational for you, because studded tires on clean asphalt: the braking distance of the car increases, the likelihood of skidding and wheel blocking increases. On ice and packed snow, studded tires improve handling, so if riding on snowy trails is prevalent, choose studs. It is important that modern classic winter tires are not worse than studded ones on slippery roads.
  3. The main mistake of motorists is that when replacing tires with winter ones (it does not matter studded non-studded one) they put them on only one driving axle. It is strictly forbidden to do this, since the wheels of the front and rear axles significantly differing in adhesion coefficients can lead to unpredictable consequences. The car becomes unstable when braking, it can suddenly go into a skid. It is also desirable to have a full-size spare tire with winter tires.

It is necessary to observe the conditions and rules for storing the summer set of tires in order for it to serve the established period. If the storage conditions are violated, even the highest quality and most expensive rubber can crack or deform. A good solution is to deposit summer tires. Now some firms (including "tire fitting") offer such services. A cheaper and more practical option is to store your tires in season. It is only necessary to take into account that the tires are stored in a dark place, not exposed to the negative effects of sunlight. They also need to be treated with silicone if possible - this will allow the rubber not to dry out and retain its elasticity.

And remember: it is better to "change" your car in advance, even before the first snowfalls and sleet. Basically, the replacement of a set of wheels is carried out at an average temperature of about + 7 °. Having done this in advance, you will not have to frantically search in stores and stand in huge queues of motorists who want to get to the tire service.

Preparing the engine

The engine is the heart of the car. Often in winter, starting a cold engine becomes an acute problem for a car enthusiast. This problem is especially relevant for carburetor cars, but in severe frosts it does not bypass injection engines either. Let's deal with the causes of this ailment: oil thickened in frost (makes it difficult to move the crankshaft), a battery that has run down during the time, weak evaporation of gasoline. The best way to prepare your engine is to change the oil. In cold weather, it is good to use one that has a low viscosity. Many, of course, fill in the so-called all-season, but this is the same as with all-season tires - they are not very suitable for our harsh winters, but just right for Europe.

Ordinary oil is designed to work at -20˚C, but in order to prevent it from becoming viscous in severe frost and start the car from half a turn, the best option would be to use one designed for -35˚C. Along with changing the oil, we also replace the filter. It is imperative to check the drive belts. If there are tears and cracks, or traces of oil, you need to urgently replace with new ones, even before the onset of cold weather, because in case of self-repair, the cold will bring additional inconvenience. Do not forget about replacing spark plugs (setting gaps) and processing high-voltage wires and parts that suffer from road salt with protective grease.

Some motorists use plain or distilled water instead of coolant. This increases the wear of the pump, and at negative temperatures it will damage the engine and the cooling system. Antifreeze must be changed every one and a half to two years. It is advisable to fill it with the same color and brand that was used earlier.

Battery check and preparation

The battery plays an important role in the winter period of operation, and can delight its owner, or cause a lot of problems and troubles. A battery that is not fully charged will run your car perfectly in summer, but may force you to use public transport in winter. Therefore, checking and maintenance, and, if necessary, replacing the battery is very important when switching to winter operation. It should be noted that almost all modern batteries are maintenance-free, and if the battery does not deliver the required current, this is a sure indicator for its replacement.

Currently, there are no problems with choosing a battery. In the markets and in stores, a wide range of starter batteries are presented with various parameters, from different manufacturers, and in different price categories. Some motorists, when choosing a battery, try to install a battery with a higher capacity than provided by the manufacturer. This is not very good both for the car generator (additional load when charging) and for the new battery (it does not fully charge, which shortens the service life). After buying a new battery, pay attention to its terminals: in some batteries, the polarities are not standard, and the terminal wires cannot always reach them.

Body treatment

Snow, ice, slush, mud, temperature changes, roads sprinkled with salt and other chemicals are a real test for the body of your car. It is in the winter period that microcracks and corrosion appear on the body most often. Therefore, anti-corrosion treatment of the car body before winter is mandatory and will keep the body in excellent condition. Some experts believe that many new cars, especially with galvanized bodies, do not require anti-corrosion treatment. But if you are the proud owner of a product of the domestic auto industry, or your body is simply not galvanized for you, according to experts, you just need to complete the processing of the bottom, arches, and hidden cavities of the body. The cost of these services is in the range of $ 250-300 and strongly depends on the protective formulations used. This type of work requires strict adherence to technology, so it is best to carry out these works at a specialized service center.

In any case, it must be remembered that before coating with an anti-corrosion compound, all elements must be clean and dry. Processing is carried out for several years in advance, so it will not be superfluous to personally control this process. To prevent the appearance of microcracks in the paint, you can cover the body with polymer-based protective agents. They form an outer film and protect the car body from rust and external damage. Do not forget about the processing of rubber bands, electric mirrors, locks, which can freeze in severe frosts. Their processing should be performed even before the onset of cold weather.

Visibility of glass is an integral element of safety and comfort. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to the work of wipers, blowing and heating systems. If the wipers are worn out, the glass is poorly cleaned, stains remain, dirt, then the road safety on such a car is at risk. As a rule, every winter-summer season. In case of any malfunctions in the heating or blowing systems, the malfunction must be eliminated immediately, since driving with foggy windows is dangerous and difficult.

The replacement of the windshield washer fluid from summer to frost-resistant should be done in a timely manner. Inattention and postponement "for later" can lead to unforeseen waste: disable the pump, clog hoses and other elements of the system.

There are a huge number of different options for interior and trunk mats (rubber, textile, combined). But as far as winter is concerned, it is most practical to use polyurethane rugs. They do not allow water to pass through, and, unlike rubber ones, do not “dubble” in the cold.

Now a short list of things that may be useful during the winter period of operation:

  1. The snow brush and glass scraper are items that you will have to use almost every day. You shouldn't skimp on buying them. Take a scraper wider, made of strong plastic and a brush that can most quickly and conveniently sweep snow from all over the car.
  2. A metal shovel can be very useful when digging a car out of snow. Here, plastic scoops will not always be able to help, because in severe frosts they break. And it is much more convenient to use a shovel with a long handle.
  3. A small touring mat can help with slipping of a car - it is very productively placed under the wheels. You can kneel on it when digging up, in extreme cases it can be used as additional thermal insulation for the engine and radiator.

Video interview - how to prepare a car for winter?

Conclusion!

Summing up, it becomes clear that preparing a car for winter is a rather complicated and lengthy procedure. Therefore, in order to avoid additional difficulties, it is necessary to start it in advance. If you follow all the procedures described above, then the likelihood that the car will fail is extremely small. I wish you success.

  • Discussion
  • In contact with

It is hard to imagine that reagents or just sand and salt are not used in winter. Forecasters promise a cold snap, which means that ice is inevitable on the roads, which can only be dealt with by anti-icing materials (PGM), a more effective means have not yet been invented. The result of the PGM operation is immediately visible and for pedestrians, in addition to melting snow and ice, we get spoiled shoes - the skin is deformed and cracked.

The effect of reagents on the car body

It is easy to guess that the body is exposed to even more reagents. A mixture of snow, PGM, sand, and often granite chips are added to these components, will quickly "process" your car. The result of such processing will be clouding of the paintwork, stains, corrosion spots, deformation of plastic parts, moldings that have lost their shine on the windows, and faded rims.

Preparing the car for the winter period

The wheel arches of a car are subject to the greatest chemical and mechanical stress.

Wheel arches are most susceptible to reagents

The wheels are spinning at high speed, sand, granite chips are flying at the same speed, and all this is flavored with chemical reagents - the destructive force is enormous. A proven method of protection is to install wheel arch liners. Choose only a high-quality product, ideally suited to the shape, treat the fender flares to the body with mastic or other similar means.

Before winter, check the body for chips, scratches. All defects must be tinted or covered with a special wax pencil.

Treatment of scratches with a wax pencil

Pencils come in a variety of colors and can be purchased at any auto parts store. Pay special attention to the underside of the car, it is enough to drive off-road once and the factory anticorrosive will be erased. If you find scuffs on the bottom, treat these areas with an anti-corrosion compound.

Should you wash your car in winter?

There are two approaches to washing a car in winter - some motorists say that it is better not to wash a car at all in winter conditions, since water enters into a destructive reaction with chemicals accumulated on the body, other drivers insist on the opposite point of view - it is better to wash the car more often so that flush all chemicals from the body. Who is right among them, you can understand only after long tests.

If you come to a car wash, ask the washer to thoroughly wash the wheel arches, the lower edges of the doors from the inside, the sills. It will not be superfluous to order waxing of the body. Leave the car wash in a dry car; the body must be thoroughly dried. The temperature difference is fraught with the formation of microcracks in the paintwork.

Body treatment after washing

Another important point is that if your car is stored in a warm garage, freezing temperatures accelerate all chemical reactions, including corrosion. Accordingly, the cleaner the body is, the more likely you are to winter without losses.

Have you seen cars that are covered with a kind of "gradient" of mud, behind which you can barely see the color? Who rides them: "economists" or ardent adherents of the "protective film" made of salt and dirt? We are figuring out how to save paintwork in winter, so as not to count the "beetles" in the spring.

Snow removal

It would seem, what is difficult here? In fact, there is nothing complicated, but the main thing is not to overdo it. It is enough to knock down a loose layer of snow, which obscures the view and "blows away" so beautifully while driving on neighbors downstream. But to tear off the ice crust from the body by force is not worth it - it will fall off by itself. Likewise, do not pour hot water on it.

Another important point is the brush. The softer the bristles, the better, the less chance of leaving micro-scratches on the body. After removing the snow, just remember to shake off the water and snow from the brush itself so that it does not freeze in the trunk or bring excess moisture into the cabin.

In recent years, the combined brush and scraper have become widespread. When choosing such a tool, it is better to pay attention to the one with work items at different ends. A tool with a scraper located immediately after the brush, not only loses in convenience, but if handled carelessly can damage the body.

Washing

It is a fact that you need to wash your car in winter. Moreover, with no less frequency than in summer, making exceptions only for the most severe frosts. Salt, reagents, dirt literally stick to the body, filling all the damage to the paintwork. And they are on any car! We will not talk about how salt acts on the body.

Another question is how to clean a car in winter with high quality, when thoughts of going outside without a hat do not even arise. It is problematic to do this in "yard" conditions: the body is covered with ice, it is difficult to knock down the adhering layer of dirt and salt. You can refresh the car, but you cannot call it a full-fledged car wash. The most desperate "economists" practice washing with hot water from the tap, but these are extreme measures. Dentists' advice not to alternate hot and cold is fully applicable to cars, and caries owners do not treat themselves. Therefore, it is better to turn to professionals.

Although the problem of temperature differences is to some extent relevant to professional car washes. Getting into a warm box from the street, the car's paintwork also becomes vulnerable. Therefore, for its maximum safety, it is necessary either to make sure that the car is not watered with frankly hot water, or to let the car stand in the box for at least some time so that the temperature of the metal becomes a little equal to the environment.

Each type of sink - manual, contactless and tunnel - has its own adherents. Those who prefer a manual sink are sure of its quality - this is an indisputable fact. But the quality directly depends on the washer himself.

Non-contact cleaning is carried out using active foam, which works instead of a washcloth. After a few minutes of being on the body, the foam is washed off, taking all the dirt with it.

Perhaps the most controversial method is the tunnel car wash. Fast, fairly high quality, but also to some extent risky. The risk lies precisely in the roller brushes, which require timely replacement. If the frequency of replacement is not observed, after such a wash on the body, you can find new micro- and even macro-scratches that do not add beauty in any way and do not extend the life of the paintwork. Unless, portal car washes benefit from entertainment: observing the process from the inside is practically meditation. And don't forget to check if the "numbers" are there!

After washing itself, it is advisable to take care of applying wax to the body. With him, the salt porridge will stick much worse, but we only need this. Not only is waxing a cure-all, but applying it regularly will help preserve the paintwork. In the case of self-washing a car, shampoos containing wax will do just fine for these purposes.

Another way to preserve the body is to use polish. Not one that is abrasive, but protective, with Teflon in its composition. The meaning and purpose is essentially the same as waxing, but the polish lasts (and lasts) longer. In the case of polishing a car, there are no problems with this at the car wash. If the choice is made in favor of self-care, then this must be done in advance or look for a warm garage or parking.

The final stage of any winter wash is drying and wiping. Doors and windows openings, seals, locks - these elements simply have to be dry if you want to get into the car. And do not forget about other places where water accumulates - it is better to study them even in the summer.

Here is what they say at one of the car washes: “It is important to have“ your ”car wash, to which you have developed trust. Motorists have one or two favorite places where they completely trust their car. Some washers can "cheat" when blowing out and wiping off the remaining water - in the cold season these "little things" can play a cruel joke. clients ".

But the opinions of the painters about caring for the body were divided. So, one insists on regular washing and thorough drying, the active use of wax or polishes, as well as on the mandatory washing of the car before driving into the garage at night. The opinion of the second is exactly the opposite: if the car is painted normally, it is not worth shaking over it once again, in extreme cases, stick a protective film on the most problematic places, thresholds and arches.
