According to the regulations, the transmission oil should be replaced with Lada Kalina every 75 thousand km of run and at least once every 4-5 years. In case of intensive use or heavy loads, you can change the oil in the Kalina box earlier, for example, after 50 thousand kilometers.

The guests already know, I talked about this in my earlier articles, today, at the request of one of our regular visitors, I will tell you about how to change the oil at the Lada Kalina checkpoint , with your own hands, of course.

To work, you need several ordinary keys, which perhaps everyone has:

  1. Threaded on "17".
  2. A watering can with a 30-50 cm hose (here you have to "farm", or buy a ready-made watering can in the store. I got out of the situation by using the floor of a plastic bottle and a piece of hose tied to its neck with electrical tape).
  3. Desirable straight "arms" and "light head" 🙂
  4. Transmission oil.
  5. Container for draining waste oil.

Changing the oil in the Kalina gearbox, like any other VAZ model, is carried out on an inspection pit or a lift. It is better to drain the oil "hot", that is, with a well-warmed engine, after a long trip or travel.

Do-it-yourself oil change in the Lada Kalina box - step by step instructions

1. We drive into the pit and fix the car (handbrake, gear, bricks for wheels, etc.).

2. For convenience, I removed the crankcase protection, it is not necessary to do this, but it is more convenient for me.

3. Place an empty container under the drain hole.

4. Then we take the key to "17" and unscrew the gearbox drain plug. Be careful and careful the oil may be HOT!

5. It will take about 10-15 minutes for the oil to drain completely.

6. Now it is necessary to tighten the plug and proceed directly to the oil change procedure, that is, to fill in a new clean transmission oil.

7. Take a watering can with a long neck or as in our case with a hose and install it in the filler hole.

8. Open a can of oil and slowly pour in about 3 liters. Using the dipstick, check the oil level in the box; it should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks.

!!! Advice: for a better and more comfortable shifting of the fifth gear, I recommend pouring in a little more oil so that the level is slightly above the middle of the "mezhmetchnogo" space, that is, closer to the upper level. Attention, this is just a tip, you can fill in strictly according to the level, this is your own business!

When the new oil is filled in and the level has been checked, tighten the filler neck and you can safely go wash your hands, because the oil change in the Lada Kalina gearbox is complete.

After a few days, check the oil level again, top up if necessary.

The Kalina-2 family cars use a cable transmission, manufactured by AvtoVAZ since 2013. A feature of the mechanical box, designated as VAZ-2181, is the following: a diagnostic probe is not provided in its design. The control and diagnostic hole is located on the side, not on the upper side of the crankcase, which will not add convenience when carrying out an oil change. How to perform this operation, that is, how to replace the transmission fluid of the manual gearbox, is discussed further.

The engine air filter should not interfere with

The air filter box in cars "Grant" and "Kalina-2" is fastened with three rubber stops. It will not be difficult to dismantle them, only first you need to disconnect all the connectors attached to the box from the outside. You will also need to remove the adsorber valve. And only then, without fear of damaging anything, the plastic box is taken to the side.

The cylinder to which the corrugation is attached is the DMRV sensor module. One connector is fixed on this module. Disconnect it, and the clamp holding the corrugation is better left unchanged.

The actions mentioned above are listed here in order:

  1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery;
  2. Disconnect the clip "1", which holds the power wire, and disconnect the connector "2" of the mass air flow sensor (Fig. 1);
  3. Dismantle the canister purge valve. Disconnect the connector with the wires, then press the spring from the side with a flat screwdriver and remove the module itself from the slots (Fig. 2);
  4. All stops holding the box can be easily removed from the slots (Fig. 3).

The connector that needs to be disconnected at "step 2" will be absent in trim levels with the 21127 motor.

Changing transmission oil

The cable transmission design contains a drain plug, which is typical for all manual transmissions. The control and filler hole is closed here with a separate plug, however, it is possible to pour liquid into the crankcase not only through it.

A reverse switch is attached to the unit body from above (see Fig.). And if this part can be unscrewed, then it will be easier to replace it than according to the standard AvtoVAZ manual.

In the figure, the numbers indicate:

  1. Reverse switch;
  2. Drain plug. It is accessed from the bottom side. The screw is unscrewed with a 17 wrench;
  3. Control and filler plug. You need to unscrew it by bringing the key from the side of the battery. A 17 flat key will do if the handle is not too long.

There is no need to unscrew the control plug trying to get to it from the side of the car bottom. As a last resort, you can perform the operation together using additional lighting.

The procedure for changing the gearbox oil will look standard:

  1. First, the control plug is not completely unscrewed;
  2. Unscrew the drain plug by substituting a free container under it;
  3. The waste oil is drained, the plug is tightened;
  4. Having unscrewed the filler plug, the oil is replaced, then all the parts are installed in place.

According to reviews, 2300 ml of transmission fluid is placed in the VAZ-2181 box. The plant is filled with Rosneft Kinetic SAE 75W-90 oil, and the recommended drain interval is 75,000 km.

Advice: it is recommended to warm up the old oil before changing it. It will be enough to drive the car about 2-3 km, trying to vary the engine speed.

Liquid can be poured into the crankcase of the 2181 box through a separate hole, which is closed with a reverse switch. The detail in question will be clearly visible if you open the hood and remove the filter box:


The connector is usually colored blue or red.

Dismantling this part is not easy. First, disconnect the connector, and to loosen the fastening, you need a special box wrench with a high head. Key size - hexagon 22.

You can get access to the internal volume of the checkpoint in another way, which is not considered here. Together with engines 21126 and 21127, a speed sensor is used, mounted on the top of the box casing. It will be easy to dismantle this unit, but after reinstallation, the tightness is broken.

The oil level in the gearbox is controlled as follows: the standard filler plug must be unscrewed, and as soon as the liquid begins to come out to the casing, the top-up is stopped. It is desirable that the vehicle is installed on a level surface. Better yet, if the body is tilted to the right - the excess transmission fluid has not damaged anyone yet.

The oil in the Lada Kalina box is designed to lubricate the rubbing elements of the mechanism and remove heat from this unit. Normally, the oil mark on the dipstick should be approximately halfway between the upper and lower marks. If the working fluid level approaches the lowest mark, then at least 200 grams of oil will need to be added.

3 What kind of oil can be poured into the Lada Kalina box?

4 How to check the condition of the oil in the box?

It is possible to assess the quality of the transmission fluid in the Lada Kalina manual transmission only by completely draining. To do this, the vehicle must be driven into a pit or overpass, remove the air filter and dismantle the protective casing of the power unit. Next, unscrew the drain cover and drain the oil into a container with a volume of at least 4 liters.

The drained liquid should be clear, without metal particles and sediment. If the volume and condition is correct, then it is poured back into the gearbox.

Dark oil with metallic impurities must be replaced. The gearbox is preliminarily washed by pouring a special flushing liquid into it through the filling hole with the drain plug closed.
