The new BMW 5-Series F10 sedan has grown a bit in size. Many people say that the BMW 5 Series F10/F11 has exceeded the conventional critical point of design complexity. Most of all contradictions are generated by reliability and operation. While the quality of the plastics and the precision of the fittings are uncompromising, the Nappa leather upholstery is disappointing. It is not as durable as you would expect from a premium brand.

There are a lot of systems in the BMW F10 that need to be constantly taken care of. The ZF 8HP automatic transmission requires an oil change every 60,000 km. And all-wheel drive versions of xDrive need even more frequent fluid updates - on average, once every 40-50 thousand km.

Some diesel engines (particularly 6-cylinder all-wheel drive versions) are equipped with a selective catalytic converter that requires topping up with a special AdBlue fluid. It is inexpensive (about $ 1 per liter), and the computer will inform you about the need to replenish it.

But the most important question: what about reliability? In response, the owners have a lot to say. Mechanics reassure: while the car is under warranty, everything is not so bad. Some copies in the secondary market still have a guarantee on important components and assemblies. The full warranty package is offered, as a rule, only by cars of the Premium Selection program.

There are failures in the operation of systems, the existence of which drivers sometimes do not even suspect. For example, a pedestrian protection system that raises the hood in a collision (its sensor is subject to service). Sometimes there are complaints about the withdrawal to the right of cars equipped with active steering. The problem is solved by updating the software. The noisy and expensive run-flat tires have been widely criticized.

Manual transmission failures occur: it is not possible to shift gear or engage reverse. Repairs are quite expensive.

Engines

The two-liter N20 gasoline unit suffers from one serious problem. After 70-120 thousand km, the chain drive of the oil pump fails - a howl occurs. Timely contacting the service will help save the engine. About 35,000 rubles will be asked for replacing the drive in a regular service. If the symptoms are ignored, the consequences will be sad - engine overhaul. Depending on the degree of damage, you will have to pay from 150 to 300 thousand rubles for the restoration of the unit. In 2014, the problem node was finalized, and the disease began to manifest itself much less frequently.

Ailments are demonstrated by a catalytic converter (20,000 rubles with work) and injectors (from 5,000 rubles). There are enough nozzles for 60-100 thousand km. If one surrenders, then soon the rest will capitulate.

A little later, you have to change the thermostat (3-4 thousand rubles), and then the fuel pump (from 9,000 rubles). After 100,000 km, it is the turn of the valve cover gasket and the cover itself, where the crankcase ventilation valve is built. The cost of a new cover is 26,000 rubles. A little later, the radiator may leak (from 18,000 rubles).

The injection pump 528th may require attention after 150,000 km. You will have to pay at least 25,000 rubles for a new pump.

The least problematic engine in the BMW 5 F10 is the 3-litre N55 petrol. However, there is no question of stability at the M54 level. By the way, it is also equipped with not the most durable fuel injectors.

The N63 series V8 engines experience high thermal loads, as the two turbines are installed directly in the camber of the block. The heat from the superchargers leads to the rapid aging of the valve stem seals, which in turn contributes to an increase in oil consumption and coking of the rings. Motorists as a preventive measure recommend changing the caps after 20-30 thousand km, which will require about 30,000 rubles. The constructive miscalculation is most clearly manifested in the charged "emks" from the S63.

Diesel engines of the N47 series still had a serious defect - premature wear of the timing chain. In most cases, the defect was discovered during the warranty period. When purchasing a car with such a diesel unit, the warranty for which has already ended, you need to be careful. Do not underestimate the noise and clicks at idle.

Replacing the chain requires removing the engine or at least disconnecting it from the gearbox. Troubleshooting costs will be about $1,000. Vulnerability usually arises from obscenely long oil change intervals. Often, owners go to maintenance only when the on-board computer calls. And the mileage by this time in one oil sometimes reaches 20-30 thousand km. This is guaranteed to kill the engine by 70-120 thousand km! To avoid problems or delay them, the replacement interval should be reduced to 8-10 thousand km. It is worth noting that in 2013 the problem was almost completely eliminated.

In addition, there are malfunctions in the exhaust gas recirculation system and fuel system malfunctions. In the latter case, the high-pressure fuel pump is most often to blame (from 73,000 rubles). It wears out, starts to drive chips and disables fuel injectors (from 26,000 rubles apiece). Symptoms: Difficulty starting, rough engine operation and "check" on the panel. With high mileage, there may be problems with the exhaust manifold (cracking) or with the turbine (backlash or broken rotor).

Another drawback is the wear of the crankshaft damper pulley. The rubber damper exfoliates and disintegrates. A characteristic symptom is a knock in the engine compartment. The pulley will have to be replaced - from 11,000 rubles. After 100,000 km, the intake manifold and the EGR valve become dirty (from 12,000 rubles). The USR cooler may also leak (from 30,000 rubles).

Since 2014, a new B47 series engine has been installed in the BMW 5 Series, which has not yet shown so many ailments.

The 6-cylinder N57 diesel is more durable and problems with it are extremely rare. However, after 200-250 thousand km, additional investments are likely to be required. If the oil is changed on the recommendation of the on-board computer, then troubles with the timing chain drive cannot be avoided here either.

The N57 with twin supercharging was installed in the 535d, and with the triple one in the M550d.

All diesel units are equipped with a particulate filter. He can be troublesome too. The DPF filter becomes clogged during frequent trips over short distances (for example, when driving in the city). Burning usually helps. In addition, the back pressure sensor may need to be replaced.

It is worth noting that the maintenance and repair of a gasoline V8 biturbo or a diesel R6 triturbo is a rather difficult task, which is reflected in the owner's wallet.

Transmission

The most common complaints about the machine are jerks. They are often fixed with a software update. But after 100,000, someone had to repair the box (from 100,000 rubles). Summed up the clutches, torque converter and valve body.

The elastic coupling of the rear driveshaft (3,500 rubles) wears out closer to 100,000 km. Sometimes a destruction of the flange of the rear cardan is found (from 20,000 rubles). In the future, the rear gearbox seals may leak, and after 150,000 km it is necessary to update the silent block for mounting the rear axle gearbox (5-10 thousand rubles, along with work).

In all-wheel drive versions of XDrive, after 80-120 thousand km, the outer CV joint of the front drive often starts to crackle. It changes only in the collection (from 26,000 rubles for an analogue). Jerks during intense acceleration will tell you that the repair of the handout is approaching. A new handout will cost 250,000 rubles, and a restored one - 35,000 rubles. About 100,000 rubles will be asked for the bulkhead.

Chassis

The suspension does not create any special problems. It is well adapted to Russian roads. However, the first major repair may be needed after 100,000 km. Repairs are quite expensive, which is the norm in the premium class.

You have to change the front levers (from 4,000 rubles per lever), front wheel bearings (from 6,000 rubles) and front shock absorbers. Knocking in the steering can be caused by wear on the cardan at the bottom of the steering shaft (14,000 rubles). Sometimes knocks and clicks are emitted by the steering rack.

Other problems and malfunctions

After a while, the aluminum inserts located on the inner sill trim come off. And cracks may appear in the lower part of the head optics. A new original headlight unit costs 26,000 rubles, and an analogue from Asia costs 11,000 rubles. Bi-xenon optics are much more expensive - 53,000 rubles.

Every now and then the heated driver's seat fails. The heating mat is sewn to the upholstery and can be changed as an assembly - 60,000 rubles. But sometimes a broken wiring can be restored - about 5,000 rubles.

The coating on the air conditioner fan speed control button is quickly erased. The manufacturer has provided new buttons, available only as a kit for 6,000 rubles. In a well-known Chinese store, you can purchase the desired button for 700 rubles.

Sometimes door locks go bad. For example, in winter, moisture gets into the cable of the front door lock mechanism and freezes. If the lock itself fails, then it will have to be replaced (from 9,000 rubles).
