In 2015 - 2016 Two new representatives of the VAZ brand were launched on the market - the Lada Vesta sedan and the Lada X-Ray (hatchback). But the project turned out to be unprofitable, and two units remained.
The models are equipped with the same transmissions, available in two versions. Either a 5-speed French manual transmission, or a robotic ATM (automatic transmission) of domestic production.
The differences include: Vesta has a 1.6-liter. The engine comes in combination with MT and AMT, and the 1.8-liter engine comes exclusively with AMT.
For X-Ray it’s the other way around, which gives the hatchback with the most powerful engine in the VAZ line a slight advantage.

Whatever the technical characteristics of the Lada Vesta and Lada XRay, the price often becomes a key indicator of the car’s availability.
Depending on the engine-gearbox combination, configuration and set of additional options, the cost of the Vesta sedan starts at 569,900 rubles and rises to 824,400 rubles. The price of the Hray hatchback is from 614,900 to 845,900 rubles. That is, Vesta has reasonable prices. Considering its modification, the SV Cross station wagon with its price in the range of 770,900-866,900 rubles, then against its background the price of the hatchback becomes attractive. Cross is already a different car from 2017, although it was correct to compare Ray with it!
Basic equipment
The Vesta base includes locking, 3 rear head restraints, 2 airbags and automatic locking on the go, ABS+BAS, TCD, NSA, EBD, ERA-GLONASS, ESC and engine protection. X Ray has the same thing, with a small caveat - 2 rear head restraints.

X-Ray's Top-Prestige also has these parameters, with the addition of fog lights, a drawer under the front passenger seat, a double floor in the trunk, power mirrors and a heated glove box and enhanced tinting of the rear windows. Like the basic, maximum configuration of the hatchback is equipped with a wider range of options.
Comparison results
Summing up the results of the comparison, it is difficult to identify a clear leader. Lada Vesta and Lada X-Ray have efficient characteristics for Russian roads like no other models. The choice depends on the preferences of the owner. Let's say the X Ray is more suitable for a country road, and the Vesta sedan is more suitable for the city. Although comparing the Cross modification, created on the basis of Vesta and X-Ray, we can say that Ray loses.

The heights of the models are different: Vesta is 73 mm lower than X-Ray, although visually this difference seems larger. This is due, in particular, to the ground clearance - the X-Ray has 17 mm more and is equal to 195 mm, while the Vesta has 178 mm. "Lada-Vesta" is presented only with this engine. X-Ray also has 2 more engine options. One of them is a 110 hp engine. pp., it is a joint development of the Renault-Nissan alliance. Its device is identical to the previous one. According to the engineers, the engine should have a power of 116 hp. s., however, it was reduced for some reasons. Thanks to innovations, this engine has good traction and is more economical. Top speed has also increased to 181 km/h.
The 122 hp engine is still the most popular. With. and volume 1.8 l. It was developed by AvtoVAZ engineers. At the moment it is installed only in X-Ray. Thanks to a torque of 170 Nm, the engine accelerates the car to 100 km/h in just 10.9 s. The top speed has also increased compared to other variants and is 186 km/h. Fuel consumption has not increased here. This was achieved thanks to the innovations of engineers. The engine could accelerate the car even faster, but due to the fact that the robotic gearbox does not work perfectly, this is impossible. If this engine were installed with mechanics, then realizing the full power of the unit would be much easier.
If a powerful engine is important, then at the moment it is better to give preference to the Lada X-Ray car. Its engine range includes a powerful 122-horsepower engine, which is not available for Vesta. However, the company plans to fix this soon and begin installing the engine in the sedan. In this case, Vesta should become faster than X-Ray. Implementing this engine in a sedan is not the easiest task, so it is being postponed.
Transmission "Lada-Vesta" and "X-Ray"
In terms of checkpoints, everything is much simpler. The cars have almost identical boxes. Only a 5-speed manual transmission and a robot are installed here. Lada-Vesta is equipped with two options: a manual transmission, developed by AvtoVAZ employees, and AMT, a French-made robot.

It is worth noting one important detail in advance: the technical characteristics of the models are largely similar, since they are produced by the same concern. The only difference is that Vesta is and will continue to be produced in Izhevsk, and X-Ray in Togliatti.
The engine for Vesta currently uses exclusively 1.6-liter sixteen-valve engines with a power of 106 horsepower. The X-Ray will also use a 106-horsepower engine, as well as, in the future, two more powerful ones, a 1.8-liter from the AvtoVAZ concern and, possibly, a Nissan 1.6-liter. For crossovers of this model (4x2 and 4x4), it is also planned to put into operation a forced 1.8-liter engine with a capacity of 140 horsepower, which will increase both power and fuel consumption, respectively. However, the engine capacity will be increased when the sports crossover concepts are released - but it is too early to talk about this.
As for the transmission, when designing the Lada Vesta, only a five-speed Euro gearbox from Renault was used (both in the form of a manual transmission and a robotic automatic transmission). In the X-Ray project, the designers allow the presence of a domestic gearbox, an analogue of which was used in the manufacture of the serial Priora and Grants - the same five stages, the same mechanics and the same variator. However, it can be assumed that AvtoVAZ will abandon the French transmission only if the car needs to be artificially “cheaper” - the imported analogue of the gearbox is objectively better.
Both cars equally meet the conditions of Russian roads that are not of the best quality. High ground clearance (you can see it in the photo), powerful (and, most importantly, durable) suspension and high-quality shock absorption make you feel more comfortable behind the wheel of both Vesta and X-Ray than in many budget-class foreign cars.
Design and convenience
Comparing the design of cars is pointless, since they are both made in approximately the same style, by the same designer. Stamping in the form of a stylized "X" is present on the front and rear fenders of both cars; the general outlines of the optics, radiator grille and stern are also generally similar. The external design is quite pleasant and harmonious - according to this evaluation criterion, both cars turned out very well.
Assessing what is inside the car is much more difficult. Considering that Vesta’s configurations are already known and the car itself is already available for free sale in official dealer showrooms, comparing the interior with pre-production X-Ray models, which have so far only appeared in videos of test drives and at official shows, is hardly appropriate.
However, the design of the interior of the car, presented in the pre-production version of the X-Ray, deserves all respect. At first glance, it is similar to the design of Vesta (woven seat upholstery, plastic trim on the doors and dashboard), but bright shaped inserts in a rich orange color are used throughout. They harmonize extremely well with the black interior and look stylish and modern.
Both cars are approximately similar in content. The basic configuration of both Vesta and X-Ray does not have air conditioning, but there is a radio and high-quality kit that ensures the safety of the driver and passengers. Five inertia seat belts and a driver airbag are already available with the purchase of a minimally option-rich factory model of both cars.
Air conditioning appears in the middle configuration. Heated windshield, which is simply necessary in winter, is optionally available when purchasing Vesta and X-Ray, also in the middle configuration. There are also additional sets of airbags for rear passengers, as well as side ones. All airbags, except the driver's ones, can be turned off if they are not needed during each specific trip.
Built-in electronics
According to some indirect data, the general scheme for compiling configurations for the Lada X-Ray car will coincide with the configurations of Vesta. This means that the capabilities of both cars will be approximately equal, as will the general electronic “filling”, which makes driving easier and adds an element of comfort to the control.
In the basic version of X-Ray, as in Vesta, quite a lot of built-in electronic assistants are expected. An uphill start assist system and a traction control system, automatic speed limiting systems when the car rolls and at a certain skid angle - these devices, according to the designers, are already in the basic configuration in both cars and are available to everyone.
More complex systems - parking sensors, rear view camera, cruise control (an option that eliminates the need to press the gas pedal) - will also be available to buyers of both Vesta and Lada X-Ray. However - in more expensive and pretentious trim levels.
Final verdict
In general, the pros and cons of cars compared to each other are difficult to analyze, since they were designed, in fact, by the same people. There are practically no differences between them - of course, the X-Ray has slightly more power and dynamics (especially in the future of its appearance on sale as an all-wheel drive crossover, rather than a “high hatchback” with front-wheel drive). However, Vesta will also be produced in an all-wheel drive “off-road” version - so it’s even harder to compare them.
The main issue of choice is the cost of the models. Initially, Bu Inge Andersson predicted sales prices for Vesta and X-Ray of 400 and 500 thousand rubles, respectively (for basic configurations), but now the picture has seriously changed (mainly due to a serious depreciation of the ruble).
For this reason, there are no objective reasons to wait for the Lada X-Ray if it is possible to purchase Vesta and the buyer does not have any preconceptions regarding the body type. Both cars are comfortable, practical and productive, as well as extremely reliable and durable (according to the designers and numerous independent experts). It makes sense to expect an all-wheel drive modification of one of the cars - at present, choosing Vesta will simply save the buyer a good amount of money.
The starting price for X-Ray starts from 599.9 thousand rubles for a car with a 1.6 liter engine of 106 hp and the Optima configuration. The robotic gearbox is paired only with the top-end 1.8-liter engine with 122 hp, the price of this Xray starts from 710.9 thousand rubles. The most expensive X-Ray will cost 798.9 thousand rubles.- this is the maximum Luxe package with the Pristige option package (1.8 liter engine + “robot”).
After the first price increase, an additional payment was introduced for body color metallic - 12 thousand rubles.
It should be mentioned that at first the localization of the hatchback will be at the level of 50%, in the future they plan to increase it to 75%, so the influence of the exchange rate on the price of the Xray is inevitable.

H4 engine from Nissan 1.6 liters per 110 hp- this engine is installed on the Nissan Sentra (although on the sedan it produces 114 hp, on the X-ray they were reduced for the sake of “optimization”) - discontinued
New VAZ engine with index 21179 volume 1.8 liters and power 122 hp and 173 Nm of torque. Initially, only a robotic gearbox was offered with it, but in the fall of 2016 a French manual transmission also appeared.
Gearboxes
Like Vesta, X-Ray will be placed like a French one "mechanic" JR5 and VAZ "robot" familiar from Vesta and causing conflicting reviews.
Dimensions
Although the Lada Xray is built on the same platform as the Renault Sandero Stepway, it is larger in size. The dimensions of X Ray are: length - 4164 millimeters, width – 1764 millimeters, height – 1570 millimeters, and the wheelbase size will reach 2592 millimeters. The Sandero Stepway hatchback is 84 millimeters shorter, seven millimeters narrower and 48 millimeters taller, and its wheelbase is three millimeters shorter.
The minimum luggage capacity is 324 l., and with the rear seatbacks folded down - 770 liters.
Start of sales
Xray production started on December 15, 2015, and sales began December 14, 2016 in 56 cities with 120 dealers. In the spring, the cars arrived at other dealers. On the day of the start of sales – February 14 – a promotion called X-day was held at dealership centers in Russia. The price for the Lada Xray in the basic configuration starts at 599.9 thousand rubles.
In total, the production of 20 thousand hatchbacks is planned for 2016. Previously, AvtoVAZ announced a figure many times higher, but due to fears of the Renault-Nissan concern about the competition of the X-Ray with the Sandero Stepway, they lowered the production plan.
Colors
For metallic color there is an additional payment of 12 thousand rubles. Color Fresh +35 thousand rubles (discontinued).

At the Moscow Motor Show in August 2016, AvtoVAZ showed the concept of an all-terrain modification of the X ray: Lada Xray Cross. The car differs from its brother in plastic body kits and increased ground clearance. Lada X Ray Cross will only be front-wheel drive, but in the future, there is a possibility of releasing a 4x4 modification.
Start of production and start of sales of Lada X Ray Cross scheduled for 2018. The price and configurations are not yet known.
In terms of size and technical characteristics, the Lada X Ray Cross will be a copy its brother the regular Xray.
