Choosing a used VW Golf VI: turbo engine trouble, DSG problems. Why not all gasoline engines VW Golf VI are equally successful, and it is better for "robots" to prefer "mechanics" Which 6th generation golf is better to buy?

The 6th generation Volkswagen Golf hatchback debuted at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, and the car appeared on the Russian market in the summer of next year. The next generation of the Golf was the continuation of one of the most successful models of the Wolfsburg-based automaker.

And although each new generation of VW Golf has been developed by different design groups, the similarities in the appearance of all models are visible to the naked eye. So the sixth Golf has the same proportions as its predecessors, a similar front end design and a characteristic C-pillar.

Despite the seeming simplicity of the style, the Volkswagen Golf 6 does not look budget or cheap. The expanding shoulder line makes the hatchback visually more squat and stretched, although its length, compared to its predecessor, has even been slightly reduced.

The new VW Golf VI has a length equal to 4,199 (wheelbase - 2,578 mm), width - 1,779 mm, height - 1,479 mm, ground clearance (clearance) is 150 mm. The hatchback's boot capacity is 350 liters, but increases to 1,305 liters when the rear seat backs are folded down.

The interior of the Volkswagen Golf 6 creates the feeling that you are in a car, at least a class higher. The dashboard with two deep wells, the sophisticated design of the dashboard made of expensive materials with aluminum trim elements, the swift lines in the design of door cards - all this remains a role model among numerous competitors.

Previously, Golf was supplied to the Russian market only with gasoline engines, but the sixth generation model was an exception: from now on, in the range of power units, there was a place for a 2.0-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 110 hp, which, however, is only available in tandem with 5- step mechanics.

As for gasoline units, their choice is much wider. The base is a 1.4-liter aspirated engine with a modest 80 hp output. It is coupled with an atmospheric 1.6-liter engine with 102 hp. The latter, unlike the first, can be ordered not only in tandem with a five-speed mechanics, but also in tandem with a 7-band DSG robot.

Also in the lineup for the Volkswagen Golf 6 there are two TSI gasoline turbo engines with a volume of 1.2 (85 and 105 hp) and 1.4 (122 hp) liters. As an alternative to the robotic transmission, traditional mechanics are offered for them, but already a six-speed (with the exception of the 85-horsepower engine).

For those for whom the power of standard engines is not enough, there is an opportunity to buy a 210-horsepower two-liter modification of the Golf GTI, or the top-end version of the Golf R hatchback with all-wheel drive and a 2.0-liter TSI engine producing 255 "horses". Both options are available in both three and five door bodies.

The price of the most affordable 80-horsepower Volkswagen Golf 6 in a three-door body in the initial Trendline configuration is 551,000 rubles. Its equipment includes 7 airbags, ABS, on-board computer, front windows, electrically adjustable heated mirrors and central locking with remote control.

The version with a more powerful 1.6-liter engine (102 hp) and mechanics is estimated at 603,000 rubles, and the surcharge for DSG is 66,000 rubles. The five-door Golf in similar modifications is more expensive by an average of 23,000 rubles. For the latter, an R-Line body kit is available with bumper and side skirts, a spoiler and exclusive rims.

Regardless of the selected configuration, engine and body type, buyers have the opportunity for a surcharge to retrofit the car with many different options, including ESP, light and rain sensors, a rear view camera, OEM navigation, CD changer and more.

An amazing coincidence! But we really didn’t fit this test for the occasion. However, it was in those days, when the testers talked with the gray and red Volkswagens with different gearboxes, that a poll was posted on the Golf Owners Club's website about the preference of a “mechanic” or “automatic” DSG. Moreover, the results were unexpected for us: almost 49% of those who answered were in favor of "mechanics". Of course, doubts about the reliability of the unit with two clutches play a major role in this choice. There are many conversations on this topic. But for an objective assessment, both sides clearly lack information. The opinions of the owners we interviewed are very different, but there are few real statistics. Comparing two "Golf" with the same 105-horsepower engines of 1.2 liters and different gearboxes - a 7-speed automatic DSG (pictured on the left) and a 6-speed "mechanics" (right), we evaluated the ride comfort and economy ...

FAST AND SLOW

Is "automatic" always more convenient than "mechanics"? We dare to say that this is not always the case. But first, let's comment on the measurement results. They were carried out in winter on winter tires, so the data are very different from the factory ones. But it was the comparison of cars in equal conditions that was important for us. In acceleration to 100 km / h, the tested Golfs are very close (according to the passport, the acceleration time is the same). A small gain of a car with "mechanics" in everyday life may not appear, since the result is highly dependent on the driver. But in acceleration from 60 to 100 km / h and even more from 80 to 120 km / h "Golf" with DSG wins. No wonder, because the 1.2-liter engine is not easy to accelerate the car in one gear (respectively - fourth and fifth). And this is how the elasticity of cars with "mechanics" is measured. The modern "automatic" quickly finds the lower stages and very quickly switches up.

The car with "mechanics" outperformed the version with DSG more than 1 l / 100 km.

The malachol engine seems to be surprisingly pulling for such a working volume. But with intense acceleration on the highway or when changing lanes in the city, it is necessary to shift a couple of gears down. By the way, a car focused on economy believes that it should switch up at about 2000 rpm. This is reminded by the gear numbers displayed on the instrument panel.

Compare two Volkswagen Golf cars with a 1.2 liter (105 hp) engine. One with a 6-speed manual, the other with a 7-speed automatic (DSG) gearbox. Which one will be faster and more economical?

CHEAP AND EXPENSIVE

On the control route, which includes Moscow traffic jams, narrow suburban highways and a highway with a permitted speed of 110 km / h, the car with "mechanics" won over the version with "automatic" more than 1 l / 100 km. A lot! Of course, the result is highly dependent on the style of the manual transmission drivers. But they changed and did not try to save money at all - they drove in a mode adequate to road conditions. Obviously, the difference in fuel consumption will be especially noticeable on suburban routes. By the way, according to the passport, a 105-horsepower "Golf" with a 6-speed "mechanics" is more economical than a colleague with a 7-speed "automatic" just outside the city. True, the difference between the factory data is minimal. But life always makes its own adjustments.

Having paid an additional 66,000 rubles (the Golf with a 105-horsepower 1.2 liter engine and DSG is so much more expensive today than the version with a “mechanics”), it should be borne in mind that 100 km of run will cost more - by about 30 rubles (Moscow the price of a liter of gasoline in February 2014). Well, at least the price of servicing cars with different boxes is the same. (There is no place to talk about repairs here.) It is also very interesting to compare a classic automatic machine "and a modern unit with two clutches. But it is almost impossible to find honest counterparts. Companies that have mastered new generation units are gradually getting rid of the old ones.

Now let's get back to the ease of use. There is one more factor (though much more difficult to measure), which, in our opinion, can influence the choice. Our test fell on the snowiest days this winter. So, traveling on country roads, poorly or not cleaned at all, experts have repeatedly agreed: in such conditions, a car that makes it possible to choose the desired gear on your own is more pleasant and reliable to drive.

The DSG, of course, also has a manual mode. But in winter, situations are not uncommon when a somewhat delayed and overly "electronic" switching of the machine "is still not what you need. Probably, this is worth thinking about if the winter is long in your latitudes, and you often have to travel outside the city. Of course, the choice, as usual, can be influenced by other pros and cons. Today, for example, there are more and more drivers for whom the presence of a third pedal causes a feeling close to horror. But this is a very specific and subjective argument.

WET AND DRY

Robotic gearboxes are made with a so-called wet clutch and a dry one. In the first case, two oil-lubricated multi-plate clutches are used as a clutch, in the second, a pair of conventional clutches are used. First, boxes with a wet clutch appeared, then dry ones began to be actively used. The latter have less mechanical losses and lower mass. So, Volkswagen (the same is put on cars of other brands included in the concern) box assembled with a dry clutch weighs only 70 kg versus 94 kg of a "wet" unit. And this despite the additional gear (the DSG with a dry clutch has seven steps, the version with a wet clutch has six).

Mechanically, the boxes are very similar. Significant differences, of course, are in the lubrication system. For a wet clutch unit, it is one, with an oil pump drive from the engine crankshaft. The refueling volume of the Volkswagen unit is 7.2 liters.

In a dry box, the system is separate - with two independent oil circuits and, accordingly, different oils. Shafts and gears are lubricated in the same way as in a conventional mechanical box. The filling volume is only 1.7 liters. The volume of the second control oil circuit is even less - 1.1 liters. The required pressure is maintained by an electro-hydraulic pump. Unlike a wet clutch box, here it only engages as needed, which also reduces mechanical losses.

Whenever possible, the transmission of torque from the engine to the drive wheels, a wet transmission is significantly superior to a dry one. For passenger cars Volkswagens it is 350 Nm versus 250. That is why wet clutch units go to cars with more powerful engines. An updated version of the OVT series gearbox with a wet clutch, but in a 7-speed version, designed to transmit a torque of 600 Nm, is installed on commercial Volkswagen-Transporter. see ZR, 2013, No. 8.

ON THE PROGRESS

105 h.p. with 1.2 liters of working volume! More recently, only sports motors could do this. Volkswagen's engine is very lively, and even fun with skilful gear shifting. But the recommended gasoline is AI-98. Fortunately, AI-95 is allowed. This is the price of technical progress and truly excellent economy. What do you want?

In our previous article on a used VW Golf VI, we made our first acquaintance with this model, telling about its position in the C-class, design features and the specifics of the Ukrainian market associated with it.

Our today's article is more thorough - in order to prepare it, we went to the Volkswagen branded workshop in order to ask the specialists who encounter this car every day about all its main advantages and sores. So, what did we manage to find out ...

Body

As domestic operating experience has shown, the corrosion resistance of used Golf 6 does not cause any comments. Even in places where paint is chipped, the metal resists the appearance of redhead disease for a long time. The important advantages of this model also include high safety - according to the results of EuroNCAP crash tests in 2009, it won the maximum 5 stars.

There are no special complaints about the condition of the body parts. Of the typical problems, only the failure of the boot lid lock should be mentioned. This can happen for two reasons. The first - it ceases to be fixed over time due to wear, the second - due to the fact that the washer fluid supply pipe flies to the rear "wiper" and at the same time floods the inside of the rear door and the lock itself, which safely puts it out of action. However, as a rule, this happens due to the fault of unlucky owners, who do not fill the winter "washer" in time, and in frosty conditions the nozzle freezes and the nozzle is torn from its place by pressure.

Among the four variants of the Golf VI body in Ukraine, 5-door hatchbacks are the most widespread. Less common on our roads are the more practical 5-door Variant wagons. Hatchbacks in a 3-door version should be attributed to rare modifications, but the elegant Golf Cabrio convertibles generally belong to the category of exotic.

In addition, owners of versions with headlight washers often complain about increased fluid consumption (see photo "Weaknesses").

Salon

The plastic trim of the VW Golf VI dashboard is soft and pleasant to the touch, the rest of the plastic parts are hard, but at the same time silent. The finishing materials are highly durable and stand the test of time with confidence. Soundproofing is good and the doors are closed with a noble muffled cotton. There are no complaints about visibility either. The seats, even in the basic versions, have good lateral support.

In general, the interior of the Golf VI looks more expressive and solid than that of its predecessor. This perception is facilitated by neat design touches in the form of chrome edging on a number of interior parts. The charged versions of the GT, GTI and GTD are adorned with aluminum pedal pads and signature plaid seat upholstery. As before, he all Golf 6 made soundly and efficiently. All the little things are worked out in detail, and the ergonomics are exemplary.

Recall that the Golf 6 is built on the same PQ35 platform that underlies its predecessor, thanks to which the machines are technically similar to each other. Since the wheelbase of the VW Golf VI has not changed (it is still the same 2578 mm), respectively, the layout of the cabin also remained the same, as well as the space inside.

The whole truth about a used VW Golf VI

23 Mar 2018, 17:00

The stock of legroom for the rear passengers is sufficient - a tall person can easily sit down by himself and at the same time his knees will not rest on the backs of the front seats! Three of us in the gallery can normally accommodate three people of average build, and a comfortable atmosphere here is created by separate air vents located on the box between the front seats.

Comments on the ergonomics of the "gallery" of the Golf VI are already traditional for many VWs - the central tunnel of the body is too massive (high and wide), so the passenger sitting in the middle has to press at the feet of his neighbors sitting on the sides.

This model has always been famous for its practicality. The sixth generation is no exception - it is convenient both for transporting passengers and various luggage. At the same time, the traveling volume of the cargo compartment of the etchbacks is average compared to competitors - 350 liters, against, for example, 340 liters for the Mazda 3, 355 liters for the Toyota Auris and 365 liters for the Ford Focus, the same balance of forces remains with the rear seats folded - 1305 liters versus 1150 liters for the Focus, 1335 liters for 1335 liters for the Auris and 1360 liters for the "troika". The functionality of using the cargo compartment increases a wide and regular loading aperture (1270 mm), a low loading threshold of the compartment, flat and not very protruding wheel arch recesses and an almost flat cargo area with the rear seats folded, slightly rising up in the area of the backs.

The common PQ35 platform has affected the interior of the Golf VI - in terms of spaciousness, the luggage compartment, as well as the interior, is completely similar to its predecessor. If we compare the figures for the volume of cargo compartments, it turns out that they are average in the "six" compared to competitors. For those who often have to use the storage compartment and who care about liters of its volume, we advise you to pay attention to the more functional versions with a station wagon.

But the VW Golf VI Variant station wagon will clearly appeal to economic motorists - it is endowed with a very spacious luggage compartment, which in terms of its volume in the stowed state is one of the largest among competitors - 505 liters versus 485 liters for the Renault Megane Tourer and 490 liters for the Ford Focus Estate.

Test Drive

Volkswagen Golf VI: Differences for Decency

True, in terms of the maximum volume of 1495 liters, it loses to them - 1515 liters for the Focus and 1600 liters for the Megane. This is due to the design features of the transformation of the rear seats - the cushions in the Golf 6 rise to the backs of the front seats and thus “eat up” useful liters of volume. True, due to such a scheme, a perfectly flat cargo area is provided, which is not obtained by all competitors.

Suspension VW Golf VI

Since Golf 6 is built on the PQ35 platform, the designers, without further ado, equipped it with a chassis from its predecessor. So, in front of the hero of our material, an independent McPherson is also used, and in the back there is a "multi-link". An anti-roll bar is installed on both axles. In general, the serviceable suspension is moderately knocked down and copes well with many of the irregularities of our roads, giving off only dull slaps of tires when they drive into the salon. Contributes to good driving performance and informative steering, equipped with an electric power steering, which changes the degree of amplification depending on the driving speed.

The adaptive DCC suspension in the VW Golf VI has three operating modes: "sport", "normal" and "comfortable", which can be selected using a button installed near the gear lever.

The only significant difference from its predecessor - in the VW Golf VI, for the first time, the adaptive suspension (DCC) of the first generation was offered as an option, which allows you to change the stiffness of the shock absorbers. However, versions with DCC were not officially delivered to Ukraine, and you rarely find it on copies imported from abroad, so the servicemen who consulted us could not tell us anything about the peculiarities of using the adaptive suspension.

In general, the standard Golf 6 suspension is time-tested and has proven to be quite durable. So, in front the fastest (after 80 thousand km) the rear silent blocks of the front levers wear out, while the stabilizer struts can last about 100 thousand km, and the front silent blocks - up to 140 thousand km. The stabilizer bushings "run" much longer and are rarely changed - this is an expensive pleasure, since they only change together with the stabilizer. The resource of ball joints is under 200 thousand km.

Thanks to the independent design, the Golf 6 chassis is endowed with excellent grip, making it a pleasure to drive this model actively!

In the rear "multi-link" to a mileage of 100 thousand km may require replacement of the bushing and stabilizer struts (changed separately) and rear shock absorbers bumpers. By 120-150 thousand km, the “rubber bands” of the rear breakup levers wear out (an original spare part assembled - about 450 UAH). But the silent blocks of the remaining rear levers are capable of withstanding a mileage of 200 thousand km. Wheel bearings also serve for a long time, but when the time comes to replace them, you will have to fork out - they change only in assembly with hubs (both branded and non-original).

The VW Golf VI has no claims to the reliability of the rack and pinion steering. This unit was modernized at the end of the production of the fifth generation model (in it the engagement of the rail and the electric motor did not differ in durability) and the hero of the material no longer raises any complaints. In principle, the same can be said about the braking system. On our roads, the tips of the steering rods are able to "run" 100-150 thousand km, and the rods themselves - even longer.

But the engines and transmissions of the Golf 6 are capable of presenting serious problems to its owners. True, this does not apply to all units with which this model was equipped. What modifications should be avoided, which ones should be paid attention to - read in our separate material.

CV "AC"

VW Golf VI deservedly won the honorary title of the best car in the world back in 2009. At the time of its presentation, it was the most advanced, and not only in its class - many modern design developments of VW engineers were introduced in it. However, in practice, some of these technologies turned out to be not entirely reliable and caused frequent troubles for the owners. True, we will talk about this another time.

Like all its previous generations, the Golf 6 is a practical and functional car, endowed with excellent driving characteristics. True, for all these advantages you will have to overpay - a used VW Golf VI is more expensive than many of its competitors.

Results of "AC"

Body and interior 4 stars

Wide offer on the secondary market. Good retention of residual value. Corrosion resistance. High security. Functional station wagon versions are often found on the market. Solid interior and high durability of its skin. Good insulation and visibility. Good legroom for rear passengers. The presence of separate air vents for the rear passengers. Functional and roomy trunk.

- Failure of the boot lid lock is noted. Increased fluid consumption in versions with headlight washers. A massive center floor tunnel interferes with the feet of a passenger sitting in the middle of the back seat.

Suspension and steering 5 stars

The knocked-down suspension works well for many of the unevenness of our roads and endows the car with high stability. Informative steering provides good handling. In general, the suspension is quite durable. Reliable steering and high resource of its consumables. Trouble-free brakes.

- The cost of repairing suspensions increases the replacement of wheel bearings together with the hubs.

Weak spots

Owners of versions with headlight washers often complain about increased fluid consumption. This is an objective fact and some people cope with this feature very radically - pulling out the appropriate electrical fuse (No. 36, 20 A, yellow).

In the front suspension of the Golf 6, the rear silent blocks of the front levers wear out the fastest (after 80 thousand km), but the rest of the consumables last much longer.

Of the body parts of the VW Golf VI, only the trunk lid lock (applies to both hatchbacks and the station wagon) is capable of disturbing.

Volkswagen Golf MK 6

VW GOLF MK6, the car began to be produced in 2009. Until January 2010, the car was assembled in Russia, in addition to Germany. Due to the start of production of the Polusedan, the assembly is carried out only in Germany (which is good!).

The most vigorous version in the Golf 6 R20 family with 256 hp. and all-wheel drive

Golf 6, like the previous generation, is built on the same base with the Audi A3, Audi TT, and there are all sorts of Skoda, Seat. The buyer can choose from a wide range of engines, there are turbocharged gasoline engines, atmospheric engines, turbodiesel engines.

There are even four-wheel drive versions. By the way, 2-liter turbo versions do not suffer from excessive devouring of engine oil, unlike Skoda and Audi, where the design of the engines is slightly different. There are also several options for transmissions: 5st and 6st mechanics or a 6-speed robot. DSG automatic transmission and 7-speed. Automatic transmission DSG (came to replace the 6st. Robot). According to the reviews of many owners, VAG has not solved many problems with the DSG, to this day many problems arise with this transmission, although the main trump card of this box is the highest characteristics, so to speak, it is great for athletes !! Unlike its classmates, the Golf 6 differs in a higher quality of finishing materials and equipment (less oak plastic, well, the number of options will satisfy anyone), probably with the exception of a BMW penny, but the price for it is inadequate.

On the disadvantages of the Golf 6, a list will be presented below:

1. Due to the large holes in the lower part of the bumper, with intensive use, the radiator honeycomb can be damaged over time, since a lot of pebbles fly there. The problem is solved by poking an aluminum mesh (details are described on specialized forums). The net will take the whole blow!

2. Chips on the paintwork appear after a year of constant use. For the sake of ecology, water-based acrylic paints are used and the paint layer itself is very thin. The thresholds are painted with anti-gravel paint without prior application of primer, directly over the metal. Although, when compared with Japanese brands, then it did not go anywhere. But still there are specimens with good quality painting, but there are few of them.

3.Scratches on the glass during the first year of operation. The reason is the priority in the direction of passive safety, therefore, it is not necessary to clean the snow on the windshield with a plastic scraper. Alternatively, you can try to install wipers with softer rubber. Although this will not help much, you can still put non-original glass, but some buyers may have questions during the sale.

4. Problems with the driver's door lock. At low temperatures, the driver's door lock begins to seize. It is not always possible to open from the key fob, so you have to open directly ...

Viewed KIA Ceed, KIA Soul, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Skoda Octavia, Suzuki SX4, VW Golf and Jetta. Opel did not even look (according to personal experience of owning), the French - too (according to personal opinion, possibly erroneous). Mitsubishi - due to the cost of maintenance (exorbitant prices for original spare parts, especially body parts), Mazda - since at that time the Mazda 3 cost around 900 tons. in a decent package.

From those viewed - shortly cons:

Ceed - Very much even. But: the gearshift mechanism is worse, the finishing materials are cheaper, the noise is worse. In general, the car for the money is super. It is also very spacious for the C-class.

Soul - in my opinion, apart from the design, there is nothing good in it.

Corolla - the interior is relatively poor and cramped, with the declared higher power, subjectively worse dynamics, bad noise.

Civic - low ground clearance, controversial design, Shumka.

Octavia - at that time in the normal configuration is expensive, not cheaper than VW.

I preferred Golf from Jetta and Golf, because at that time Jetta with mechanics was even more expensive than Golf of the next generation.

Pros of Golf:

Excellent finishing materials, excellent noise insulation relative to the class, ergonomics. I personally liked the conservative look and feel of the 4th Generation Golf. It eats 92nd gasoline without any problems (officially admissible for use), relatively inexpensive to maintain in relation to many competitors. Nice, simple and straightforward German design, plenty of space under the hood. For example, replacing a light bulb yourself is not a problem, it takes 5 minutes. I liked the suspension very much, it is quite stiff, but "unbreakable" - so far it has not been possible to pierce it even once.

Excellent quality paintwork, twigs, scratching the car, do not leave marks.

Quite spacious interior both front and rear.

Excellent work of wipers, washers and headlight washers. The latter work automatically, not very often, while not using too much washer and actually washing away most of the dirt.

I really liked the work of the traction control system - there is no full-fledged ESP in my configuration, but this system works perfectly, without interfering ahead of time, and really helping in turns if you make a mistake or compensate for the wet road surface. If desired, it can be turned off by pressing one button.

Rich equipment with pillows in the basic configuration - 7 pieces, including a knee pad for the driver.

Very high range of seat adjustment (including passenger) - both in the longitudinal direction and in height.

Excellent work in automatic dual-zone climate control mode. Comfort in the cabin and no fog on the windows.

A nice little thing - you set the speed, when it is exceeded, a signal is heard in the cabin. It is very convenient so as not to get fines and not be distracted by the speedometer.

Cons:

From time to time, almost from the beginning of operation, one of the speakers begins to crackle, and they are different. Sometimes it's okay. Under the guarantee, I will definitely contact, but later, there is no desire to waste time.

Engine 1.6 l, 102 power - for a reasonable ride, of course, is great, but I would like more.

A specific feature - when idling while standing still - the engine does not warm up. After 20-30 minutes. the arrow of the coolant temperature sensor does not rise, barely warm air blows from the deflectors. It is worth getting under way - the temperature rises to working temperature in a couple of minutes. Saves the excellent three-stage heated seats.

P.S. Fuel consumption: city, serious traffic jams, slow driving: 11-13 liters.

City, free roads, active driving: 9-11 liters.

Track, mode 110-140: 7.5-8.5 liters.
