And the predicted time may be wrong. This is especially noticeable during the morning rush hour. Even before the morning rush hour, if you leave somewhere between seven and eight, then an error in the predicted time can be catastrophic, because exactly as you move, traffic jams grow, and we, unfortunately, do not yet know how to take this into account. That's why I give this example with chess. Once upon a time everyone laughed about how a computer could beat a person at chess, but now no one laughs. We are now somewhere in the middle, 10 years ago no one could have thought that a computer would advise you to avoid traffic jams. Now he advises, but now there is still a basis for a person, he can still beat, because he understands how the situation can develop. The algorithm does not take this into account. But yes, we are working on it, we already have a forecast for the next hour, you can see it from your computer. There is a forecast for the long term. But it is not yet included in the routing algorithm. I hope that someday we will be able to do this well enough, and people will be able to completely relax.

P. Sh.: And you publish so-called traffic jam statistics. Moreover, many drivers notice that traffic jams occur at the same time, in the same place. Due to this knowledge, this experience, the driver beats the computer. But the computer knows about this too.

L.M.: Yes, he knows. It is difficult to explain without going into details. This is a really difficult, primarily technical task. It can even be implemented quite well on one computer, but if you give it a lot of time to calculate. But implementing this on hundreds of requests per second, even on a larger number, is technically difficult. And here, unfortunately, the struggle is right on how to come up with an algorithm that takes all this into account in a reasonable time. And all sorts of other technical nuances, which, it would seem, are such a simple matter that lie on the surface while they push us back in time. But I'm sure we will do it.

P. Sh.: Many drivers asked specifically about changing the route while driving. You are driving, Yandex. Navigator suggests changing the route to a faster one. But here several nuances arise. The first caveat is that the driver has different preferences. Some people prefer to lose time, but move along large illuminated roads, preferably without entering courtyards or some small, cramped streets. And someone, on the contrary, says, make me a more difficult route, but so that I gain three minutes. Will this feature of driver behavior ever be taken into account by the navigator?

That is, as you move, the navigator does not offer you to change the route, even if there is a faster one.

It will also show a faster one. You will be able to choose at this moment. Therefore, if you are the driver who wants to save three minutes, I personally do this too, at every convenient moment I click on the “review” button, see what options are offered, whether there is something faster or maybe the same, but more convenient . In the direction of travel, at a traffic light, this can be done. But if you are a driver who wants something easier, you chose the route from the very beginning. That's it, the navigator won't bother you anymore.

P. Sh.: Another question arises. If a person goes astray from the route, or rather, his coordinates go astray, this creates the effect of endlessly rearranging the route. This is especially noticeable where the GPS signal is lost. And the coordinates are incorrect. This is quite logical and obvious. The navigator begins to abruptly change the route, thinking that you have suddenly moved a hundred meters to the right or to the left. Is there anything that can be done about this?

L.M.: The navigator, of course, has an algorithm that removes this interference. In general, the algorithm copes correctly in many situations. Yes, let's not say it can't be better. There are also different ideas. For example, you can use an accelerometer. Some more external ideas. There is now computer vision. To the point where you can ask a person to place the camera so that the road is visible, and from the photo understand where he is. There is probably room for improvement.

P. Sh.: A well-known topic. But how many people use Yandex. Navigator now? Because I saw, I just returned from Kazan, they use Yandex. Navigator everywhere.

This situation in general may mean that the traffic jam is over, the route needs to be repainted green. It may also be that people are standing at the turn, and there is a separation of flows. We have worked to maintain this balance. Now, as far as we can see from our instruments, the situation has become noticeably better. Still, in general, the highlighted stripes are painted red if there is a traffic jam. The number of people avoiding traffic jams using dedicated lanes has become less significant. Plus, we screen out taxi drivers separately for obvious reasons.

P.Sh.: But how, since almost all taxi drivers use your program?

L.M.: I mean those taxi drivers who are connected to our Yandex. Taxi service. In any case, we can identify them and we can ignore their data.
