In 1972, the legendary Kozlik, an SUV marked UAZ-469, rolled off the assembly line of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant. Initially, it was positioned as a vehicle for military purposes, but later a civilian version was also released. The popularity of this model was determined by only one positive quality, but the most serious one - high cross-country ability.

The fact that the model turned out to be successful in its own way is evidenced by the fact that its subsequent generation, the UAZ-3151, did not have significant design modifications. This car remained the same rough, without any hint of comfort. But its phenomenal cross-country ability brightened up all the hardships.

The second generation, and now the last, was the model called UAZ “Hunter”, released in 2003. And although the usual digital index of the version was replaced with an English word, it is still the same “Kozlik”, albeit somewhat modified to suit current realities.

Note that this series of SUVs will no longer have a continuation, and the “Hunter” is the final model. Next, let's look at what the latest generation of the legendary SUV is.

Types of bodies, overall dimensions

Let's start with the body and dimensions of this car. Like the previous model, this SUV was available in two body styles. The main one was a 5-door station wagon with a hard metal top. The Hunter is also available in a station wagon-phaeton body, with a removable canvas top stretched over dismantled arches.

Judging in general, “Hunter” has no innovations other than the name and some minor elements. And since no changes were made to the design part, the dimensions of the SUV remained almost the same as those of the 3151 model.

The length of the “Hunter” is 4.1 m, the width (with folded mirrors) is 2.01 m, and the height is 2.025 m. The main advantage of this SUV is the ground clearance, which is 210 mm.

Exterior

Let's take a look at the exterior of the car, which has remained virtually unchanged since the time of the 469 model. All the same cubic chopped shapes and complete minimalism. But this is one of the advantages of the car. It is, after all, designed to move where other SUVs cannot reach. And there is no need for extra elements on the body for this.

The appearance of the car has long been familiar. All the same two horizontal bars with wide stripes rounded at the edges, acting as a radiator grille, round protruding headlights below which the fog lights are located. Interestingly, there are no turn signals in front at all; they are located on the side near the windshield. The bumper also remained unchanged - a regular stamped beam with hooks on top. And most importantly - no plastic.

The part of the body reserved for the interior is shaped like a glazed box. The only noteworthy thing about the side of the car is the protruding body stamping that forms the wheel arches. Nobody hid the door curtains; they remained outside the body. But there is already finishing plastic here, which is used on the door handles and as the housing of the side mirrors.

The rear of the car is vertical. The 5th door is a folding door, it consists of two parts and the spare wheel is attached to the lower one. The rear lighting equipment is very simple and consists of two vertical block headlights that combine brake lights and turn signals.

In general, the exterior of the car is very simple and without any frills. But such minimalism is often only a plus, especially for lovers of all kinds of tuning.

Interior

The interior of the Hunter matches its appearance - spartan and no hint of comfort. But the designers have at least slightly redesigned the seats, increasing their comfort, and also equipping the rear row with headrests. By the way, it is separate.

Unlike previous models, the front panel of the Hunter is trimmed with plastic. The main place on it, and the central one, is reserved for the instrument panel. All information sensors on it are round, analog, located in a row, which determines such dimensions of the tidy. Below the sensors there is a block of functional keys.

There is no center console as such. Instead, there is an opening with visible electrical wiring and air ducts of the heating system.

Although the Hunter appeared in 2003, they never got around to installing power windows in the doors. Instead, there is split glass, and if the driver wants to ventilate the interior, he needs to move one of the glass halves to the side.

The transmission of this car is controlled using two levers coming from the central tunnel. One of them controls the gearbox, and the second controls the transfer case. That's all the interior equipment.

Specifications

Let's move on to the technical part. Since its appearance, the Hunter, like its predecessors, has only had a gasoline power plant. At first, a 2.9-liter unit with a power of 104 hp was used. With. Later, this installation was replaced with an engine from the Patriot, the main characteristics of which are: volume - 2.7 liters, power - 128 hp.

UAZ "Hunter" - diesel
1) Initially, the car was offered a Polish 8-valve Andoria unit with a volume of 2.4 liters, generating 86 “horses” at 4000 rpm and 183 Nm of peak thrust at 1800 rpm.
2) In 2005, it was replaced by the domestic 2.2-liter ZMZ-51432 engine with a 16-valve timing belt, developing 114 forces at 3500 rpm and 270 Nm at 1800-2800 rpm.
3) And finally, the Chinese version of the 2.2-liter F-Diesel 4JB1T was installed on the Hunter, the output of which is 92 horsepower at 3600 rpm and 200 Nm at 2000 rpm.

Later than everyone else, the diesel version of the “Hunter” appeared with a 2.2-liter engine from the same “Patriot”, which produces 98 hp. With. Now models with such an engine can only be purchased secondhand.

The SUV's transmission consists of a 5-speed manual transmission and a 2-speed transfer case. The Hunter's wheel arrangement is 4x4, but the front axle is disengaged.

Speed is clearly not this SUV's element. Its maximum speed is 130 km/h – the petrol version. Diesel is inferior to this indicator by 10 km/h. There is nothing to talk about dynamic characteristics at all.

The Hunter's high cross-country ability also requires good fuel consumption. So, the gasoline model consumes on average 13.5 liters, the UAZ “Hunter” diesel “eats” less, but not by much, its average consumption is 10.1 liters. Note that these are indicators when driving on a paved road. Off-road consumption will increase significantly.

Options and cost

The UAZ “Hunter” is no longer produced, although dealers still have new models of this SUV, without mileage, and even in several trim levels. It’s just that there are configurations, but no optional equipment as such. For example, the basic model, called “Classic”, is equipped with:

  1. Hyundai gearbox;
  2. Alloy wheels;
  3. Metallic paint.

UAZ "Hunter" in the "Trophy" configuration

The top-end configuration - “Trophy”, in addition to the described options, has protection for steering rods and transmission units; cars with it are also available in a special color and with exclusive wheels. That's where all the options ended.

It is worth mentioning the special “Victory” series of “Hunter”, which ended the production of this SUV. It was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Victory, thanks to which the car received some special options - army paint with airbrushing of musical notes (the distinctive sign of the Maestro from the film “Only Old Men Go to Battle”), as well as a souvenir set consisting of a raincoat, an entrenching tool and pot.

Another indisputable advantage of this car, along with cross-country ability, is its low cost. And although the production of “Hunter” has already been stopped, you can still buy a new SUV, albeit only with a gasoline engine.

The basic version of the Hunter with an all-metal body will cost the buyer only 469,000 rubles. The model with the “Trophy” package costs RUB 529,900. The special “Victory” series SUV will cost the same.

The diesel UAZ Hunter is a solid, practical Russian Gelendevagen with straight shapes. Even gaps, normally closing doors, but the enamel is a little expensive for an SUV, because the UAZ Hunter diesel must make its way through forests and impassable thickets, and metallic paint can quickly get scratched. Yes, this is not for you.

I would like to note that the car's step is a bit high and the doorway is a little narrow, which may be difficult for some drivers to enter. The seats of the model are very comfortable and the driver, even with a large size, will be able to move closer to the dashboard and feel free. It is possible to install an additional row of seats and equip the car with a hinged trunk door, which will make the SUV convenient for family trips.

Having watched the UAZ Hunter diesel video, you will notice that in the new model the designers have completely rid this car of: the unsuccessful design of the gearbox and insufficient engine power, and have made it the most convenient and comfortable for passengers, while maintaining its masculine character and punchy power.

The advantages of the car, according to experts, are:

  • Comfortable salon.
  • Transmission and new power units.
  • Modernized.
  • Load capacity and capacity.

But the main advantage of the UAZ Hunter diesel is that owner reviews note its excellent functionality. It can be used as a car for transporting passengers, as a tug, and for off-road travel. This SUV is simply ideal for Russian roads and is resistant to any weather conditions.

In addition, the advantages of diesel are obvious: on average, savings of 2-3 liters of fuel. The car engine does not react at all to the load and additional passengers. There is no chance that it will overheat at idle or during a storm off-road. In operation, a modified and tested diesel engine will be much more reliable than a gasoline ZMZ.

The owner writes: The new UAZ Hunter diesel has no equal in its endurance and cross-country ability, especially in the North. The Mitsubishi L-200 and Ford Ranger are not even a match for it - I tested it myself. In the ruts on which the Urals go, the tires of these cars were torn off, but the UAZ takes people out without any problems.

Another advantage of the car is that it easily overcomes obstacles and performs remarkably well in situations in which any other SUV would not cope. High ground clearance, all-wheel drive and a spring suspension with a stabilizer make the car easy to navigate on any road. Thanks to these qualities, the UAZ Hunter diesel is predicted to become very popular in the future.

Sales of UAZ Hunter diesel ZMZ engine are already going very well today. Many appreciated the rare combination of affordable cost, high power and cross-country ability. This model is surprisingly easy to maintain and operate, is fuel efficient, and spare parts are low in cost.

You can quote UAZ Hunter diesel owner reviews: me UAZ Hunter 315195, 128 hp. 2007 The low-end thrust is much higher than that of its carburetor predecessors, it rushes like a tank. The gearbox is Dimos, there is no grinding noise when switching. The gearbox shifts smoothly like in a passenger car, the floor does not heat up, the steering does not hiss or I bought a UAZ Hunter diesel engine ZMZ 5143 in December 2008, mileage 65,000 km, no problems. I'll do it myself. I change the oil (synthetic) and filter. Everything else is fine. Already on my own initiative I replaced the kingpins with bearing ones - beauty. I use it in any conditions, I use it at work. You can cite thousands of reviews from happy owners of this model. But the best thing is to buy a car and enjoy its excellent driving performance yourself.

UAZ Hunter - a classic looking to the future

The fact that sales of the UAZ Hunter do not decline even during the years of the economic crisis once again proves that the management of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant is right, which has not stopped producing the classic military SUV today. However, those who have already managed to buy a UAZ Hunter were able to see in practice that this is far from a copy of those hard-working UAZ vehicles that drive millions along the roads of our country to this day.

In the UAZ Hunter, the designers finally managed to completely rid the car of the main shortcomings of its predecessor - an insufficiently powerful engine and a not very successful gearbox design. The creators of the modern UAZ Hunter did not modify these components, but replaced them with fundamentally new ones.

The UAZ Hunter goes on sale in three main modifications:

  • - classic UAZ Hunter with a tent roof
  • - UAZ Hunter in all-metal version
  • - UAZ Hunter diesel

There is no absolute sales leader for the UAZ Hunter, as each modification finds its fans. It is curious that the cost of the UAZ Hunter in different versions differs slightly, which allows buyers to choose the right model not by the price of the UAZ Hunter, but by the useful properties that each of them has. In any case, buying a UAZ Hunter means purchasing a reliable and inexpensive car, equally suitable for traveling on the asphalt of cities and where there are no roads at all.

Who is the UAZ Hunter designed for?

The answer is simple - the UAZ Hunter is designed for Russian citizens who are forced to drive on Russian roads, and want to do this both in the harsh Siberian winter and in the hot summer. Buy a UAZ Hunter - get at your disposal a “workhorse” that can easily cope with the transportation of not only passengers, but also quite heavy cargo.

Moreover, the UAZ Hunter (including the UAZ Hunter diesel) will cope with its task both at minus 45 and plus 40 ° C, in conditions of excess moisture, dust and rarefied mountain air. The most interesting thing is that in recent years there have been many people who want to buy a new UAZ Hunter abroad, including in the USA, the homeland of the no less famous Hummer. Of course, part of the reason for this is the rather low cost of the UAZ Hunter. However, the fact remains that the sale of UAZ Hunter cars is growing steadily.

UAZ Hunter - diesel or gasoline?

As we have already mentioned, the prices of the UAZ Hunter diesel are not much different from the gasoline ones, and there are about the same number of people who want to buy a UAZ Hunter diesel as those who need a UAZ Hunter with a gasoline injection engine. Perhaps some are confused by the fact that currently the UAZ Hunter diesel is sold exclusively within Russia.

The thing is that the management of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant this time decided not to limit itself to the usual certification tests, but in the interests of customers to conduct a long-term check of the UAZ Hunter Diesel within the country, and take into account the feedback of our compatriots. In general, these reviews are positive, and many have already become convinced that the diesel only emphasized the useful properties of the car, reduced the minimum sustainable speed on the roads, and also significantly moderated its appetite.

Considering how much a UAZ Hunter costs compared to foreign jeeps, purchasing a diesel UAZ can be considered very profitable. After all, the price of a new UAZ Hunter is still lower than its European or American used counterparts; in addition, special programs to support buyers of Russian cars provide a good opportunity to buy a UAZ Hunter on credit without overpayment.

4.5 / 5 ( 8 votes)

The “Hunter” model (English: “Hunter” - hunter) has been produced by the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant since 2003. The prototype was, of course, the UAZ 469, which became a legend in the automotive industry and underwent numerous tests in difficult road and operating conditions, which confirmed the practical value of this vehicle. “Hunter” spent 12 years proving his right to be a successor. All.

In 2015, the moral and technical backwardness of the UAZ Hunter dictated a reasonable decision to discontinue production, but we had to take into account the opinion of buyers who still wanted to purchase the car.

Therefore, before being removed from the assembly line, the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant produced a custom UAZ Hunter 2016 model year called “Victory Series.” In 2016, the Russian car market presented the model with the following releases:

  • "Classic";
  • "Trophy";
  • "Winning streak"

The updated model retains the qualities of an SUV: unpretentiousness, cross-country ability, relative cheapness and reliability.

Exterior

The car is equipped with a station wagon with five doors and a hard metal top. The appearance, compared to the prototype, has not undergone fundamental changes. This is a military SUV, adapted for work in the city and rural areas.

It is distinguished by characteristic rectangular contours and minimal external creativity. But considering that the car is designed to travel on difficult terrain, external modesty is justified.

The body structure has five doors. The radiator grille is made in the form of two stripes, on the sides of which there are round, slightly protruding headlights. On top, behind the hood, is an air intake cover that is adjustable from the cab. Tow hooks on stamped steel front bumper. On the side, to the left and right of the windshield, there are repeaters made of yellow plastic.

Narrow doors open 90 degrees. External door awnings. Side mirrors at speeds over 100 km. per hour they sometimes try to change the position on their own. The presence of windows along the perimeter creates panoramic visibility.

The rear part of the body is vertical with one door on which the spare wheel is mounted. Above the rear bumper there is a block of vertical rectangular headlights. External minimalism, however, opens up new horizons for tuning enthusiasts.

External tuning of the “Hunter”

The advantages and disadvantages are inherent to the machine. Therefore, “Hunter” is suitable for modeling and interesting modifications. For this vehicle, a necessary modification will be the installation of a sunroof in the cabin roof. This will help eliminate the problem of ventilation and the problem of reducing temperature in hot weather.

It is better to buy a finished aluminum hatch in a store and make markings on it for cutting out the metal. It is better to cut a steel roof with a grinder, not forgetting to cool the seam with water, and first remove the sheathing. It is better to perform the work of installing the hatch with an assistant, using sealant and sealant.

Body kits that expand additional functions can be made independently, if you do not strive for a presentable appearance. Otherwise, it is better to buy professionally designed body kits. The requirement for body kits is to be durable and not bulky. Power body kits are designed taking into account the installation of a winch and an increase in the wheel format to improve cross-country ability.

The specifics of the SUV require it to be equipped with a special expedition luggage rack. To do this, a frame is welded from the profile and reinforced with metal mesh. Then the fasteners are welded for installation on the roof of the car. Additional lighting equipment is installed on the trunk.

Interior

The interior of this model places some emphasis on comfort. The front and rear seats are equipped with headrests. The chairs are equipped with adjustment elements for smoothly changing the position of the backrest, longitudinal direction and degree of lumbar support.

This is a necessary condition for the convenience of boarding people. Passenger seats can be folded down to increase luggage compartment space or removed. There are seat belts.

We are pleased with the presence of a hydrocorrector for the headlights, which changes the flow of light vertically, which is necessary when the trunk is loaded with weight. The floor is insulated with carpet. The front panel is made of plastic. The speedometer is located in the projection of the steering wheel, and this impairs the visibility of the speedometer when driving.

The rest of the authentic instrumentation is located to the right of the steering column. Above them is a block of lamps for control and signaling. Below them are the keypad and controls. Under the dashboard, in sight is a heating unit in which the required temperature control has not been achieved.

A cigarette lighter appeared on the panel opposite the passenger's seat. The steering wheel is fixed rigidly and without adjustments, but the presence of power steering makes it easier to control the car. There are no power windows.

Instead, there are vents that slide tightly to the side, designed to ventilate the interior. The transmission is mechanical. It is controlled by the lever of the five-speed gearbox and the lever of the transfer case, and all-wheel drive.

Interior tuning

Tuning the interior is of course necessary. At least to compensate for the shortcomings of factory assembly, design, and equipment. The task is to transfer the structure from a state of minimal comfort to an acceptable state.

You can start with insulation. In the factory version there is only a hint of this. The reason for tuning is also given by the glaring imperfection of the factory-assembled heating system. Temperature control is primitive.

Choosing the type of insulation for floors and doors is not difficult, but it is better to buy foil, as it has reliable heat-insulating properties, felt or bitoplast. Before insulation begins, cracks and joints are sealed with sealant, although polyurethane foam is also suitable.

Make additional sound insulation of the engine compartment. When changing the interior, replace the chairs with anatomical ones with a sufficient number of adjustments and even heating. The steering wheel and heater are subject to modification. It is better to replace the latter with a modern one that meets the requirement of comfort.

Specifications

Power unit

The vehicle is equipped with a gasoline or diesel engine. The UAZ Hunter has a ZMZ-409.10 gasoline engine with a fuel consumption of 13.2 liters. at a cruising speed of 100 km/h. The UAZ “Hunter” diesel is equipped with a ZMZ-5143.10 engine with a fuel consumption of 10 liters. at a speed of 90 km/h.

Transmission

Korean five-speed. The gear shift pattern is standard, but shifting in the Korean one is easier than in the Arzamas 469 gearbox. In second gear, the “Hunter” accelerates to 80 km/h. Front and rear axles of the UAZ "Hunter" spacer type.

The transfer case is two-stage. The front suspension is spring dependent, reinforced with telescopic shock absorbers. The rear is dependent, reinforced with hydropneumatic shock absorbers. An anti-roll bar is installed to compensate for dips when hitting potholes.

The wheels contain 16-inch stamped or cast rims. Stamped wheels, compared to cast ones, are suitable for off-road use, differing in their ability to absorb impacts. Alloy wheels are suitable for use in urban environments. The drive is rear-wheel drive with a rigid front-wheel drive connection. The balance of characteristics is confirmed by the detailed description given in the summary table.

Content

The UAZ-315195 model, also known as the UAZ Hunter, is a continuation of the series of domestic SUVs of the UAZ family, valued for their cross-country ability and unpretentiousness. This model went into production in 2003. Unlike previous models, the Hunter is offered not only in a gasoline version, but also in a diesel version - this is where it compares favorably in terms of efficiency and improved dynamic qualities. In all other respects, it corresponds to other Ulyanovsk SUVs - dependent suspensions on both axles, a two-stage transfer case, a powerful frame, and so on.

UAZ Hunter 2.2 diesel

The UAZ Hunter can be equipped with a 2.2-liter in-line 4-cylinder diesel engine ZMZ-5143.10, developing a power of 98 hp. and a torque of 216 Nm. It allows the SUV to reach a speed of 120 km/h and its characteristics comply with the global environmental standards Euro-3. A diesel engine with a power of up to 109 hp can also be installed. Diesel engines are equipped only with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Real reviews of fuel consumption per 100 km UAZ Hunter 2.2 diesel

  • Yuri, Belgorod. I bought a used car to go fishing. I am completely satisfied with the purchase - 2008 with a diesel engine. The engine had to be repaired - the previous owner did not take good care of it. But after the repair there were no problems at all. Consumption outside the city - not on the highway, but off-road - is about 12 l/100 km.
  • Timofey. Kharkiv. I needed a car for work - large and passable, but inexpensive. The choice fell on Hunter, but I immediately chose a model with a 2.2 liter diesel engine. A good and reliable car. Consumption averages up to 9 liters per hundred.
  • Dmitry, Rostov. I got the 2009 Hunter from my grandfather - he once bought it for himself in the village, then gave it to me. The 109 hp engine is powerful and unpretentious, and diesel consumption, for me, is very low - in the city I get about 11 liters.
  • Evgeniy, Sevastopol. We bought an SUV for trips to the mountains, to the country or to the seashore. The main thing is that it is reliable and passable, and cheap to maintain. I can’t say for sure about consumption, but in the city it’s about 10 liters, in the mountains it’s up to 15.
  • Vsevolod, Moscow. UAZ Hunter, 2003, 2.2 diesel. I bought it at the dealership and have already clocked 110,000 miles on it. I won’t say that the car is for daily use, but for out-of-town trips it’s just what you need. The average consumption is 11 liters. The only drawback is the power of 98 hp. Not enough, at least a couple more dozen horses.
  • Vladimir, Surgut. For the North, Hunter is the best choice. It’s not even a matter of cross-country ability, but the fact that the soil is a mixture of sand and water. On foreign cars, the rubber bands on the CV joints fly out instantly. Consumption is within 9-12 liters, depending on where you drive. Of the minuses, the build quality is not stellar, everything is done poorly and somehow ill-considered.
  • Alexander, Vologda. I bought a UAZ in 2013 as a car for fishing. I didn’t need special comfort and the like - but even my unpretentious taste can’t stand it. Disgusting build quality, cracks everywhere, began to rust within six months. Factory tires are terrible, fuel consumption in the city is no less than 10 liters, although the engine has 100 hp. No. I sold it a year later and bought a used L200 - more expensive, of course, but with Hunter, heaven and earth.

UAZ Hunter 2.7 petrol

The most popular engine for the UAZ Hunter is the ZMZ 2.7 liter gasoline injection power unit. Depending on the configuration, it can have a power of 112 or 128 hp, and can also be combined with either a 4-speed or 5-speed manual transmission.

Real fuel consumption of UAZ Hunter 2.7 petrol

  • Murat, Tomsk. UAZ Hunter 2010, 2.7 MT. Motor 112 hp completely unreliable - after just four months it was due for repairs. And this happens all the time - it’s good that the spare parts are inexpensive. In terms of consumption - in winter in the city it turns out to be about 17 liters, in summer no less than 14-15.
  • Mikhail, Ufa. An excellent car in everything that concerns cross-country ability. I bought my Hunter back in 2007, straight from the factory. So far there have been no serious problems - nor places where I could not drive. Fuel consumption is quite adequate - 15 liters per hundred (the Volga has even more).
  • Andrey, Kazan. I drove more than 100 thousand km in a UAZ - a company car. The more I work on it, the more I am convinced that for that kind of money it is better to take a used foreign car - there is much more comfort, and the consumption is lower, since the UAZ consumes 15 liters on average.
  • Peter, Vladivostok. As a person who bought a Hunter for trips to the country and fishing, I will dissuade everyone from buying this car. The only option is a second car just for such needs, but never as a main one. Gasoline consumption is 14-15 liters per hundred, too harsh, and the build quality leaves much to be desired.
  • Kirill, St. Petersburg. In general, I drive a Camry in the city, but for trips to nature and hunting I bought a Hunter. Very voracious - on the highway at 80 km/h it consumes 12 liters. Any foreign car is much more economical.
  • Arseny, Makhachkala. UAZ Hunter, 2.7MT, 2009. An easy car to repair, spare parts are cheap - but it breaks down often. And the consumption is decent - about 15 liters in the city, up to 12 on the highway.
  • Mikhail, Petrozavodsk. I recently crashed my 2008 Hunter and collided with a Kamaz. Of course, the car was badly damaged - there’s no point in even restoring it. I’m going to buy a new one - I’ll also buy a Hunter, but a diesel one, because gasoline consumption is very high - up to 15 liters in the city.
