The icon was in a cell way. With oil from the lamp burning in front of the cell icon, the Monk Seraphim anointed the sick, and they received healing. In front of this icon, the monk departed to the Lord. Another name for the icon is “Joy of all joys”. This is how St. Seraphim himself often called the icon "Tenderness".

After glorification in the guise of saints, Emperor Nicholas II donated a precious riza for the icon of Tenderness. In 1927, the Diveevsky Monastery, where the original Joy of All Joys icon was located, was closed, but the holy image was secretly taken out. It has been kept by pious people for decades. In June 1991, the icon was handed over to Patriarch Alexy II, and now it is in the Patriarchal Residence. Once a year, on the feast of the Praise of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Seraphim-Diveevo icon “Tenderness” is taken out for general worship at the Patriarchal Epiphany Cathedral.

The veneration of the icon of Tenderness is associated with the name of St. Seraphim of Sarov (P. I. Moshnin, 1759-1833, canonized in 1903). According to the biography, compiled according to the memoirs of people who knew the Sarov elder closely, his whole life passed under the auspices of the Mother of God. The Mother of God repeatedly appeared to him in visions, healed from deadly diseases. Rev. Seraphim had several icons of the Mother of God. Among them, a special place was occupied by a cell icon called Tenderness, which the elder also called "Joy of all joys." Before her, kneeling in prayer, he died. The icon was painted on a canvas stretched over a cypress board. After the death of Rev. Seraphim, hegumen Nifont transferred the image to the nearby Diveevsky convent, which was under the patronage. In Diveevo, a gilded silver riza was made for the icon. Here in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity a special chapel was arranged for the icon, dedicated to its name - the Tenderness of the Mother of God. The icon was celebrated on July 28 and December 9 (the day the monastery was founded). Metropolitan Seraphim (Chichagov) composed a special service for the glorified icon. To the opening of the relics of St. Seraphim from the icon was made a list for the Sarov Monastery. After canonization, the production of lists began in the icon-painting workshops of the Diveevo Monastery and its courtyard in Peterhof. The icon was depicted in various printed publications and on hagiographic images of St. Seraphim.

The icon from the Tretyakov Gallery is an exact copy of the revered image. The image of the Mother of God is half-length, with her hands folded on her chest, her head bowed and her gaze lowered. Western iconography, which appeared in Russia in the 17th century. On the icon-copy, a gilded frame and a riza, an ubrus and a crown, decorated with precious stones, are imitated by means of painting. The faces of the hand are made with soft light-and-shadow modeling in the style of academic painting of the early 20th century, which was used for painting icons. The crown is framed by the inscription: "Hail unbridened bride."

The article will focus on the icon of the Mother of God Tenderness, what believers pray in front of her and what a unique meaning it has for the whole world. It depicts the Virgin immediately after the Good News, when the archangel Gabriel appeared to her and announced that she would become the Mother of God. This moment captured the beginning of the Incarnation, from here begins the fulfillment of the promise of the salvation of all mankind. The Lord has already come to earth to show His love and atone for the sins of the world.

“Tenderness” is not just an icon, it is a testimony. About eternal life, about forgiveness. The image foreshadows death on the cross in the name of infinite love.

Description of the Tenderness icon: types

In this article, you will learn about the Serafimo-Diveevo Icon of Tenderness. But in addition to the most famous "Joy of All Joys", there is a whole iconographic type of icons under the general name "Tenderness". Let's get to know them briefly.

Icons "Tenderness" (Eleusa) - one of the main types of images of the Mother of God. There are many traditional icons, the main distinguishing feature of which is the letter of the Virgin with Christ in her arms, where they press their cheeks against each other. Which is the iconographic type of Tenderness in the traditional version. This symbol means the absence of distance between God the Son and His Mother and the endless love between them. The glorified icons of the Mother of God of this type are as follows:

  • Novgorod;

  • Pskov-Pechersk;

  • Vladimirskaya;

  • Feodorovskaya;

  • Donskaya;

  • some others.

There are also lesser-known iconographic varieties of Tenderness, such as the "Leaping of the Child", which also belongs to the type of Eleusa.

But the greatest fame and veneration belongs to the Diveevo icon "Tenderness", before which the Rev. Seraphim of Sarov. He called her "The Joy of All Joys" and healed the sick before her. The Mother of God repeatedly appeared to the saint herself, healed him of a fatal illness, “this kind of ours” - she spoke about him. Father Seraphim left this icon behind him as the Guardian of the Diveevo Monastery. The icon became famous for many miracles.

The original has miraculously survived to this day. The shrine is kept in the Patriarchal Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, the working Patriarchal residence in Chisty Lane. There is a tradition one day a year - on the feast of the Praise of the Most Holy Theotokos - to bring the Serafimo-Diveevo Icon of the Tenderness of the Mother of God for worship to all believers. Divine service with the image takes place in the Moscow Epiphany Cathedral in Yelokhovo. Traditionally, an akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos is read on this day. The holiday is celebrated on Saturday of the fifth week of Lent.

Serafimo-Diveevo Icon of the Mother of God Tenderness: meaning

Seraphim's Tenderness is one of the most touching images of the Most Holy Theotokos. Here she is depicted as if alone, but remembering what the event is dedicated to, we know that this is not so. The son is invisibly present and reflected in her face with divine features - meekness, chastity, quiet light.

It is difficult to even guess what the Mother of God felt at that moment: on the icon we see her lowered gaze. Cross-folded hands on the chest symbolize the inexpressible Mystery, foreshadow the sacrifice on the cross. The head is in a touching half-tilt. The image of the words around the crown: "rejoice, Unbrideed Bride."

Several expressive strokes were depicted by an unknown icon painter on the canvas. And these strokes perfectly conveyed the essence: before us is the Mother of God at her most exciting moment, immediately after the Annunciation. Soon she will go to Elizabeth, and her cousin will say to her the words that will become a hymn to the Mother of God: “Virgin Mother of God, rejoice! ..”. And the Virgin will answer: “My soul magnifies the Lord ...”, - we sing this Song to her to this day. The culmination of the event. Mankind has matured to accept the Son of God, and behold, He is with us.

Miracles of the Icon of the Mother of God Tenderness

Taking its origin from the hands of Rev. Seraphim, this image has been pleasing us with its help for several centuries. Miracles continue today. The modern icon of the Mother of God “Seraphim’s Tenderness” is known, called Lokotskaya, after the place of finding in the village of Lokot, Bryansk region. This is the only two-sided miraculous myrrh-streaming icon in the world. There are numerous testimonies that bodily and mental illnesses are healed before the image. She also turned out great. One woman saw on the counter in the store a paper calendar of the Virgin, lying in neglect. It turned out that the calendar is expired and is not subject to sale. Fearing for the fate that the holy Face might face, the woman took the image home. Over time, he began to stream myrrh, then miracles and healings occurred. Next, in the house of a woman, all the icons were streaming myrrh. On the paper icon "Tenderness" another Face was formed, on the other side. The icon can still be found today. Its keeper, Natalya Shishkova, has been hosting pilgrims for more than 10 years.

According to her, prayer before the icon of the Mother of God Tenderness helps to heal serious illnesses and cope with life's difficulties.

Icon of the Mother of God Tenderness: what helps and what do believers pray for?

Serafim's Tenderness is the embodiment of purity and restrained joy. One of the most exalted images of the Virgin. Among the people, the icon is revered as a faithful assistant in choosing a worthy groom and a teacher of chastity for girls. It is believed that the icon of the Mother of God of Tenderness helps young girls in choosing their path, what they pray for in front of her, as well as for a good marriage, conception, and safe childbirth. You can ask for the gift of a noble disposition and a pure life for fragile girlish hearts.

The icon is not easy. The prototype turned out to be in the hands of Seraphim of Sarov: how, when, where this icon came from - we don’t know anything. It is only known that the monk always fervently prayed before it, blessed his spiritual children with it, miracles and healings took place before this icon. And as a culmination, after prayerfully standing before her on a stone for 300 days, Father Seraphim gave his soul to God.

Icon of the Mother of God Tenderness: prayer and troparion

Prayer

Accept, O All-Mighty, Most Pure Lady, Lady of the Theotokos, the only application to Thee, from us, Thy unworthy servants: chosen from all generations, the highest being of all creatures of heaven and earth, for the sake of Thee, the Lord of forces be with us, and by Thee we know the Son of God and let us be vouchsafed the communion of His holy Body and His most pure Blood; even more blessed are you in the birth of childbirth, God-blessed, the brightest of the Cherubim and the most honest of the Seraphim. And now, all-singing Most Holy Theotokos, do not stop praying for us, Thy unworthy servants, to deliver us from every evil advice and every circumstance and keep us intact from every poisonous pretense of the devil; but even to the end, with Your prayers, keep us uncondemned, as if by Your intercession and help we save, glory, praise, thanksgiving and worship in the Trinity to the One God and all the Creator, we send up, now and forever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Troparion, tone 4

Let us fall down to the Theotokos with tenderness, all burdened with sins, kissing Her miraculous icon of Tenderness, kissing and crying with tears: Mistress, accept the prayer of Your unworthy servants and grant us, who ask, great Your mercy.

We see that the icon of the Tenderness of the Mother of God has not lost its significance to this day. And, probably, it is unlikely to lose. What are they praying for? Who will help us so much, who will console us so much, if not the Queen of Heaven? With maternal tenderness, until our last day, she will take care of everyone who does not reject her help. Let us pray to her for prudence, high morality. May she not leave us in trials and may we not forget about her in prosperity.

In the Orthodox faith, many icons of the Most Holy Theotokos are venerated. More often you can find shrines where the Mother of God holds the baby in her arms.

But there is a bright image of the Virgin Mary, depicted on the eve of the birth of Jesus Christ, but after the Annunciation.

Soon she will go to Elizabeth, her cousin, who will say the words that have become the hymn of the Mother of God: “Virgin Mother of God, rejoice!”. We sing this song to her to this day.

What does the image of the Most Holy Theotokos “Tenderness” look like, in what way does it help, we will talk in this article.

Image of Our Lady of Tenderness

There is a whole iconographic series of holy images of the Mother of God, united under one name - “Tenderness”. But the most famous of them is the Joy of All Joys icon, where the Virgin Mary is captured at the happiest moment when the Archangel Gabriel brought the good news that She was to give birth to a son of God. The hands of the Virgin are crossed in a prayerful gesture, her head is slightly tilted, and her eyes are half down. Such a face personifies tenderness.

The history of the icon "Joy of all Joys"

The history of the icon of the Tenderness of the Most Holy Theotokos dates back several centuries. The original image of the Mother of God "Tenderness" was painted on canvas, attached to a thin board of cypress. This icon belonged to the Reverend Elder and miracle worker Seraphim of Sarov (1759-1833), the patron and founder of the Diveevo monastery. Saint Seraphim was glorified by the church in 1903 thanks to Emperor Nicholas II and is still the most revered ascetic of Orthodoxy in the history of the Russian Church.

In his hermit life, Seraphim of Sarov never parted from the face of Our Lady "Tenderness", which he called "The Joy of All Joys" and carried it everywhere with him in his knapsack. That ancient shrine brought many miracles. Even the lamp oil, located near the face, had healing properties. The venerable miracle worker anointed sick pilgrims with it, who flowed to him like a river for help, said prayers to the icon “Tenderness”, and this helped recovery.

After his death, the elder bequeathed to transfer his beloved shrine to the Diveyevo sisters, where she had been for more than 150 years. The Seraphim-Diveevo icon is considered to be one of the main images depicting the face of the Mother of God, because it testifies to the imminent birth of the son of God, Jesus Christ. The bright image is permeated with joy and meekness, just such feelings that the Mother of God experienced at that happy moment.

The history of writing and the author of the original Serafimo-Diveevo icon are unknown, and the origin of the icon dates back to the years of the life of Seraphim of Sarov, that is, the end of the 18th century. After the death of the elder, the image was kept in the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Diveevo Monastery. A special chapel was built there, and an elegant deity with glass (kiot) was carved under the icon itself. There was a tradition in the monastery when all the nuns during the service stood behind this icon case with the face of the Virgin. In 1902, Nicholas II made an invaluable gift for this icon in the form of a gilded riza and a silver lamp.

And in 1991, the original shrine "Tenderness" was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate and is still in the patriarchal residence. In the Diveye Monastery, instead of the original, an exact copy of the miraculous image was left. But every year on the day of the Praise of the Most Holy Theotokos (Saturday of the fifth week of Great Lent), the original is transferred from the Patriarchal Church for general worship to the Epiphany (Elokhovsky) Cathedral. For the last 70 years, the Epiphany Cathedral has been the heart of Orthodox Russia, the center of its spiritual life.

Everyone can see the wonderful image of “Tenderness”, venerate the beloved icon of Seraphim of Sarov once a year.

Other famous images

Over time, a large number of copies were made from the original, in which the Virgin Mary is depicted waist-deep, with her arms folded crosswise, most often in a blue veil. Above the head of the Virgin, the words from the akathist are written - "rejoice, unbridened bride." The images speak of forgiveness and eternal life, death in the name of love and the salvation of all mankind. The Lord is already coming to earth to atone for worldly sins. It is known that some of these copies also have miraculous properties, like the original.

But in addition to the most famous "Joy of all Joys", there are many images with the image of the Mother of God, under the general name "Tenderness". There are icons where the Virgin Mary is depicted not alone, but with a baby in her arms, and her head is tilted lovingly towards him. The little Christ pulls his hands to the Mother of God and presses his cheek to her cheek. These shrines are imbued with such warmth, which can only be between a mother and a child. Therefore, such faces also belong to the iconographic image "Tenderness".

In the Orthodox Church, several types of icons of the Mother of God are revered. Tenderness, from the Greek word "Eleus", means merciful, tender. Icons from the Eleusa category depict the Mother of God with a baby in her arms. Here are some of them:

The Lokot icon appeared quite by accident, when it was seen on calendars sold in a regular store by a resident of the village, Natalia Shishkova. She told the saleswoman that it was wrong to treat photographs in which there was the Mother of God in this way. To this, the saleswoman replied that the calendars were outdated and would still have to be thrown away.

Natalya, a true believing Christian, bought the two remaining calendars with the face of the Virgin, cut off unnecessary dates and hung these “Tenderness” icons (photo) in her house. Once, while reading a church book in silence, a woman felt a pleasant aroma, but did not attach any importance to this. And a few minutes later, I saw an oil stain on the image, and the fragrance came from it.

She consulted with the priest of the local church, who confirmed the frequent cases of myrrh-streaming images that are not in the temple. Meanwhile, the fragrant myrrh-streaming increased, and soon the myrrh flowed from the photograph onto the wall.

And on the feast of the great Easter in Natalya's house, all the icons, of which she had quite a lot, were streaming myrrh. After that, it was decided to transfer the image to the salary. Having removed it from the wall, the owners were surprised to find that the myrrh did not cover the entire leaf, but only the face of the Mother of God. The fragrant oil soaked the paper on the reverse side, where the image of the All-Tsaritsa appeared, and the rest of the surface of the calendar was dry. So a double face appeared, and the icon began to be called two-sided.

And after some time, they noticed that healings occur from this image. People began to come to the house, read prayers and akathists. Over the past years, the Lokot icon has participated more than once in religious processions. With her, more than 13 thousand kilometers were traveled through various cities of Russia, and along the entire path of the procession, the peace-bearing face of the Mother of God helped the suffering to cope with life's adversities, gave believers healing, and turned the eyes of unbelievers to God.

  • Pskov-Caves image of "Tenderness", which is a copy of the icon of the Vladimir Mother of God, was painted by the monk Arseny Khitrosh in 1521. The icon was taken to the Pskov-Pechersk monastery in 1529 by the abbot of the monastery, the Monk Cornelius. The image became famous for defending Pskov in 1581, when the Polish king Stefan fired at the city with fiery cannonballs. One shell landed directly on the “Tenderness” icon, which the inhabitants of the fortress hung on top of the wall as the only Defender. But the shrine miraculously did not suffer.

The merit was given to the same image when in 1812 the city of Polotsk was recaptured from the troops of Napoleon Bonaparte. Russian soldiers and commanders attribute the victory precisely to the help of the miraculous icon "Tenderness".

Other stories of this image are also known, associated with miraculous healings from various ailments, including blindness.

On the Pskov-Caves image, the Mother of God holds little Jesus, clinging to her mother's cheek.

This symbolizes the endless connection between children and parents, the great power of filial love.

The faces of the Mother of God belong to the same type (Eleus):

  • Donskoy;
  • Vladimirskaya;
  • Yaroslavskaya;
  • Grebnevskaya;
  • Pochaevskaya.

There are also less well-known varieties of the faces of the Mother of God “Tenderness”, for example, “Jumping the Baby”, which also belongs to the “Eleus” type. For many centuries, all these shrines have delighted the Orthodox with their help, carrying tenderness and significance in the image of the Mother of God icon.

SERAFIM-DIVEEVSKAYA ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD "Tenderness"

In the Orthodox Church, several types of icons of the Theotokos "Tenderness" (in the Greek tradition - "Eleusa") are accepted for veneration. Eleusa (Greek Ελεούσα - merciful from έλεος - compassion, sympathy) is one of the main types of images of the Mother of God in Russian icon painting. On them, the Most Holy Theotokos is usually depicted to the waist and holds the baby - the Savior - in her arms and bows with tenderness to her Divine Son.

The Serafimo-Diveevo icon "Tenderness" differs from the others - it depicts the Mother of God alone. An interesting fact is that the iconographic type of this icon is more characteristic of Western Christianity than the Eastern tradition of writing. According to iconography, it goes back to the one revered in Lithuania and Western Russia, from which it differs by the absence of Western attributes - the crescent moon below and the stars around the halo. The Most Holy Theotokos is depicted here at a young age, at that moment in Her life, when the Archangel Gabriel proclaimed the good news of the incarnation of the Son of God. The face of the Holy Virgin Mary is pensive, her arms are folded crosswise on her chest, her gaze is turned downward, her eyes are half closed, and the whole appearance conveys a state of deep humility and love. Above the head is an inscription of the words from the akathist: “Rejoice, Unbrided Bride!” This image does not belong to the type of icon painting "Eleus", however, it has an identical name.

The icon of the Mother of God "Tenderness" Serafimo-Diveevskaya belonged to the Monk Seraphim of Sarov, was his cell icon. The history of painting and the author of this icon are unknown; its origin dates back to the end of the 18th century.

With oil from the lamp that burned in front of this holy icon, the Monk anointed the sick, who received healing after the anointing.

The ascetic called the icon "Tenderness" - "Joy of All Joys", and in front of it he died in prayer on January 2, 1833. After the death of the Monk Seraphim, the Sarov rector, Fr. Nifont gave the holy icon “Joy of All Joys” to the sisters of the Diveevo Seraphim Convent. They transferred it to the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Diveevo monastery, where the icon was until the Soviet period. For this, a special chapel was rebuilt, and the icon was placed in a special elegant icon case. Since that time, there has been a tradition: for all the nuns of the monastery during the service, to stand behind the icon case of the Virgin.

In 1902, Saint Emperor Nicholas II presented the monastery with a precious gilded riza for the Tenderness icon and a decorated silver lamp. In the year when Seraphim of Sarov was glorified, several exact lists were made from the Mother of God icon, which were sent to various Russian monasteries.

In 1927 The Diveevo Monastery, where the original Joy of All Joys icon was located, was closed, but the holy image was secretly taken out by Abbess Alexandra of Diveevo to Murom. It has been kept by pious people for decades.

In 1991 the miraculous image was handed over to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II, who placed the icon in the Patriarchal Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God of the Working Patriarchal Residence in Chisty Lane where she currently is.

According to tradition, once a year - on the feast of the Praise of the Most Holy Theotokos (5th Week of Great Lent (Saturday Akathist)) - the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church brings the Seraphim-Diveyevo image of the Mother of God "Tenderness" to worship in Moscow Epiphany Cathedral in Yelokhovo to read the Akathist before her. On this day, the miraculous image is taken out for worship - all Orthodox Christians can venerate it.

The Diveye Monastery now houses an exact copy of the miraculous image, whichis considered one of the main shrines of the Seraphim-Diveevsky monastery. The nuns and nuns of the convent consider her their Heavenly Abbess.

The celebration of the Seraphim-Diveevo icon "Tenderness" is taking place July 28/August 10.

Prayer

O Most Holy Lady, Mother of God Virgin! Accept our unworthy prayers, save us from the slanders of evil people and from vain death, give us repentance before the end, have mercy on our prayers and grant joy instead of sorrow. And deliver us, O Lady Lady Theotokos, from all misfortune, misfortune, sorrow, illness and all evil, and vouchsafe us, Thy sinful servants, to the right hand at the second coming of Thy Son, Christ our God, and the heirs of us be worthy of the Kingdom of Heaven and eternal life with all the saints for everlasting ages. Amen.

Souther imitating the barren fig tree, I, accursed, do not bear tenderness of the fruit and am afraid of the cut, but, looking at the miraculous icon of Thy Tenderness, the Lady, I wail from the heart and cry out: Tendered, Merciful, and to me, a petrified heart, favor the tribute of the soul and heart tenderness.
Ikos
I overcame my sins of the harlot, and the harlot, and the publican, and the robber, and the Ninevites, I am one, cursed more than all people, and, having lost grace and boldness to the Lord, I groan from my heart and cry out: Thou intercessor and guarantor of the salvation of my sinful soul, bless me, giving me spiritual and heartfelt tenderness.
