New Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano: which is better? "Nissan Terrano" and "Renault Duster": comparison, characteristics, test drive. Which is better: Nissan Terrano or Renault Duster Now about the differences

The Nissan Terrano is similar in appearance to the Renault Duster, so car enthusiasts have questions: which is better, how they differ and what to choose in the end? This gives rise to the desire to compare the Nissan Terrano and Renault Duster and feel the difference.

It is important to understand that the Terrano series originally represented SUVs. After the creation of the alliance of the two concerns, the status quo changed. Now Terrano has turned into a clone of the French compact crossover. No wonder Duster and Terrano are called brothers. The latter only produces:

  • "spare" under the bottom;
  • “Nissan” motifs in design;
  • more representative exterior.

Yes, they are different:

  • bumpers;
  • block headlights and taillights;
  • front facing;
  • noticeable differences in the design of the disks.
  • But these are minor things. However, despite the striking (see photo) external similarity, there are significant differences hidden inside, in the filling.

The Duster has an improved multimedia combine with:

  • bluetooth;
  • effective navigator;
  • engine start function by timer or remotely.

And the “French” dashboard is generally more attractive. Dual-zone climate control adds another plus, while the competitor only offers air conditioning.

But Terrano has its own advantages - its signature features are:

  • exclusive equipment with an online rearview camera (top version);
  • partial chrome plating of the panel;
  • front seat height adjustment.

Engine

The Terrano does not have a diesel option, so the Duster has a serious advantage here - a 1500 cc engine. cm, power 109 hp. and fuel consumption of 5.8 l/100 km for the urban cycle or 5.3 l/100 km in general mode. Petrol ones are the same: with a volume of 1600 cubic meters. cm and 114 hp or from 2000 cc. cm and 143 hp Consumption for the second: city - 10.3 l; track - 6.5 l. Front-wheel drive Duster with a capacity of 1600 cc. cm in the city will burn 9.6 liters, Terrano - 9.8 liters.

A comparison test for gasoline modifications shows minor differences in technical performance. But with almost equal curb weight (~1.4 t), length (~4.33 m) and width (1.82 m). Duster has a higher load capacity - 0.5 t versus 0.454 t.

Ride quality

Both crossovers have 2 versions:

  • all-wheel drive;
  • mono-drive.

True, the “two-liter” Duster (along with a 6-speed manual) has a 4-speed automatic transmission for both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions, which its competitor cannot boast of. The test drive demonstrated the absolute identity of the cars in handling. True, experts are inclined to say that ideally Duster is more suitable for a rural resident, and Terrano for a city dweller.

Price

The cost factor definitely plays against Terrano (~850,000 rubles, max 950,000 rubles). Although, given the current financial instability, the budget Duster has become unattainable for domestic buyers.

conclusions

If we keep in mind the latest models, then it is Duster, which appeared first in 2011, that is considered the prototype of Terrano 2014. In turn, Terrano 2014 cannot be called a prototype of the Duster 2015 restyling.

When comparing the two brands, it is necessary to remember that the brainchild of Nissan in the auto world is associated with:

  • a certain image (elegance of the body);
  • traditional aggressive style combined with Japanese quality;
  • a solid pedigree in the production of all-terrain vehicles.

Renault's new development, inherited from Dacia, has a less rich history. But:

  • under the outer unpretentiousness and hood, the Duster hides technological components that are economical for its class;
  • in terms of traction and maneuverability, it resembles a buggy.

In addition, thanks to the optimal price-quality balance, the latter continued to rapidly gain popularity in 2015, risking gaining universal fame as a people's car (although for obvious reasons in the Russian Federation, the current season is marked by a decline in sales). But whoever prefers:

  • stability;
  • respectability;
  • more options;

They will, of course, choose Terrano, since the “French” does not possess these properties.

In contact with

Many buyers wonder: Nissan Terrano or Renault Duster - which is better? After all, both of these models belong to the group of budget crossovers and are not inferior to each other in many respects. And externally, if you look from the side, they can even be mistaken for twins! But there are still differences between these cars, and today our goal is to compare the Nissan Terrano and Renault Duster.

To do this, we will take a closer look at:

  • exterior;
  • features of the VO platform;
  • interior equipment;
  • specifications;
  • engine and transmission characteristics;
  • permeability;
  • price.

Appearance

Let's start, of course, with the most noticeable similarities and differences between these two models - visual ones.

Looking at the Nissan Terrano or Renault Duster for the first time, you immediately notice the similar design of these models. If you look at the cars from the side, it turns out that Nissan is like Duster like two peas in a pod:

  • the models have the same dimensions;
  • car body panels differ only in minor details;
  • roof rails are installed on the roofs of both cars;
  • the ground clearance is the same.

It seems that we are seeing the same model. But the differences become noticeable if you look at the cars from other angles.

We will see different:

  • bumper shapes;
  • rear and front headlight units;
  • radiator grille;
  • wheel designs.

If we talk about the appearance of each model separately, the Nissan seems to be a more stylish car. Its body is equipped with a large number of decorative details, for example, protruding lines on the body or intricate designs of lighting elements. It looks more attractive overall, and the grille and angular headlights give it a slightly aggressive look.

However, the disadvantages include the fact that the lower part of the bumper is painted with enamel. So driving over rough terrain can lead to scratches, unlike the Duster, whose lower part of the bumper is made of unpainted plastic.

The Duster clearly lacks refined details. The model looks a little clumsy, which immediately suggests that it is budget-friendly. Although this exterior also has fans who value simplicity and reliability.

Platform B0

Terrano Duster is based on the same platform and is similar in this parameter.

The B0 modular platform assumes the following design:

  1. The front part of the platform includes reinforced struts equipped with telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers.
  2. The rear part is determined by the type of drive. For front-wheel drive vehicles this is a torsion beam, and for all-wheel drive models it is an independent multi-link element.
  3. Vehicle traction is provided using a GKN electromagnetic clutch. High ground clearance - 210 millimeters - makes both models look like real SUVs, capable of providing a high level of cross-country ability on any road.

Salon

When choosing between Nissan Terrano or Renault Duster, you need to consider the interior features of each car.

Despite the fact that the interior of these models is similar, there are also differences. Thus, after the latest update, Nissan’s steering wheel has slightly changed its shape, the storage compartment for small items is equipped with a closing lid, and the air blow detectors are rectangular in shape.

Anyone who chooses between Nissan Terrano and Renault Duster cars needs to take into account: neither of these models is equipped with a multifunction steering wheel. All you can do with a signature piece is adjust the height.

The multimedia system is also worth noting: in Nissan it is located lower, and the sensor is smaller - 5 inches - and has a lower resolution. Owners note that it is inconvenient to use it while driving - you have to bend over, losing sight of the road. However, the multimedia system has a built-in rear view camera - this is an undoubted advantage that the Duster does not have. But the French model has a 7-inch multimedia system, a higher screen resolution and an easy-to-use location.

Both models have a fabric interior as standard; you will have to pay extra for leather trim. Also, factory cars do not have armrests. In addition, the rear cabin space of both cars is cramped and large passengers will find it uncomfortable, and the headrest in the center rear seat interferes with the driver's view.

The luggage compartment volume of the Nissan is 475 liters, and with the rear seat folded down it is 1636 liters. The front-wheel drive Duster has a similar volume. However, the all-wheel drive Renault model has less capacity due to the spare wheel - 407 and 1570 liters.

Technical characteristics of the car

Both appearance and interior equipment play an important role, but the car, first of all, must have good technical characteristics. We will talk about them further.

Duster and Terrano can be driven by a 1.6 or 2.0 liter gasoline engine with a power of 102 horsepower and 135 horsepower. The most powerful engine in Terrano produces 195 Nm, and in Duster – 190 Nm.

In addition, Renault can be equipped with a 1.5-liter diesel engine with 109 horsepower, which combines dynamism with high fuel efficiency.

The suspension of both cars is stiff and copes with off-road conditions without any problems. However, this affects ride comfort. Also, owners of both models note that the steering wheel is too heavy when parking, but becomes too light at high speeds.

Engine and transmission

Comparing Nissan Terrano and Renault Duster in terms of engine and transmission makes no sense. From the point of view of these parameters, this is the same car. The all-wheel drive system and transmission design are the same. The same goes for sound insulation and maneuverability.

So if you change from a Terrano to a Duster, you won't feel any difference in handling.

However, it should be taken into account that the stabilization system, available for all Nissan equipment, is intended for Renault only as an additional option for the top equipment.

Patency

As for the cross-country ability of both cars, the advantage remains with Renault. The lower parts of the bumper on the Duster, unlike the Terrano, are not painted with enamel, so they are less scratched when driving off-road. The Duster is also capable of handling steeper inclines and inclines, which the Nissan is unable to do due to its updated bumper design.

The behavior of the cars on the road itself is not particularly different. The same can be said about ride comfort - the suspension of the Terrano and Duster is equally harsh.

Price component

And finally, let's consider the decisive parameter that prudent drivers pay attention to first. Let's compare the purchase price: Nissan Terrano vs Renault Duster.

Both Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano are budget crossovers in approximately the same price category. If we talk about the price of cars, then the advantage remains with Duster. Nissan, due to the stylish design and popularity of Japanese cars, costs more, which many find not entirely justified.

The minimum price for Terrano is 720,000 rubles, while the cheapest Renault crossover costs from 550,000 rubles. The top version of Duster with similar equipment will also cost less than Nissan - 650,000 rubles.

As for the top version of the models, Nissan will be more expensive here too: 930,000 rubles versus 840,000 rubles for the Duster.

Summary of comparison

Thus, a comparison of the Nissan Terrano and Duster showed that although these models have much in common, and they are similar in appearance, there is still a difference. This is especially true for the cost of cars, which is lower for Renault, despite the fact that it is not inferior to Nissan in the main parameters.

A comparison of the Renault Duster and the Nissan Terrano can be briefly described as follows: the more stylish and well-thought-out Nissan is not inferior to the Duster in power and cross-country ability, but is more expensive. The cars have similar interiors, platforms and transmissions, but the Duster offers the driver more choice when it comes to engine and gearbox.

In addition, the Terrano is more suitable for city driving, as its bumpers are covered with enamel and can be scratched. Whereas Duster is not afraid of rough terrain and will overcome it without receiving visible cosmetic defects.

Terrano is more suitable for those who value details and interesting design, prefer to drive mainly on city roads and do not skimp on a more expensive car. But Duster is more likely for connoisseurs of simplicity and reliability who need an inexpensive car for all occasions.

Comparison video

The Frenchman Renault Duster, popular in our country, has long ago declared itself as an excellent crossover that drives equally well both within the city and outside it, and confidently overcomes off-road conditions that appear on the way. Relatively recently, our customers had a unique opportunity to purchase a co-platform Nissan Terrano model. And then a completely natural question arose: what to choose? Now we will make a comparison in which there will be Nissan Terrano vs Renault Duster. This will definitely help you make a choice, and we’ll find out what’s best.

Exterior

Let's start with the exterior of both cars. After the Renault Duster was restyled, its appearance became more presentable and better, it began to look more like the Nissan Terrano. Plus, the design of the front bumper is somewhat, although noticeably different, and has differences in its appearance, so the model from Nissan is the leader in this regard.
If we take everything else, then Terrano has the features of the Duster familiar to many Russians. At the same time, the latter takes advantage of its adaptability to constant travel over very poor rough terrain and practicality.

Interior

Once inside the test cars, it is felt that both cars are budget options. In both cars, the engineers worked hard, the interior is done quite well. New, new center console, improved overall look. All this gave the models greater beauty and harmony.

But the dashboard of the Nissan Terrano turned out to be not so expressive when compared with the Renault Duster model, which made a real splash some time ago, and many people like it better.

Despite these merits, the “French” has one big drawback - it is located very low on the center console, which makes it difficult for the driver to see what is happening on the display so as not to be distracted from the road. Terrano engineers have solved this problem, and in this model the multimedia system is in the right place and is very convenient to use.

Comparing cross-country ability

Since we turned to SUV class cars, it follows that cross-country ability is one of the fundamental lines. In order to objectively assess which model copes better with off-road driving, you need to find out the differences between the cars in terms of technical data and overall dimensions.

There are no differences between both cars, and is automatically activated through a special electromagnetic clutch, and control occurs from the cabin by switching one of three modes - front-wheel drive, automatic drive and permanent all-wheel drive.
The Nissan Terrano has low overhangs, plus the exterior is somewhat overloaded with various decorative elements, which makes you think twice before going off-road. In this regard, Renault Duster is an absolute favorite, since it is a practical car, and on rough terrain, the driver will not have to worry about broken decorative elements. The comparison in this regard is clearly in favor of the “Frenchman”.

Specifications

So, Nissan Terrano vs Renault Duster, in order to fully find out which is better, it is important to know what each of the presented models is capable of while driving on city roads.

To do this, it is necessary to compare the range of power plants of the machines. The restyled version of Duster shared modified petrol units with its co-platform Nissan. Each car can be equipped with a 1.6 or 2.0 liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 102 l/hp and 135 l/hp.

At the same time, the top engine in Terrano produces 195 Nm, and in Duster – 190 Nm.

On top of everything else, the French equipped their cars with a power of 90 hp. This engine consumes 5.3 liters for every 100 km, which is an excellent option for economical owners.

Unfortunately, the Nissan model has a disadvantage over today's competitor - the lack of an automatic transmission for the version with an all-wheel drive system. An automatic transmission is offered to buyers only in a car with a front-wheel drive system.

Let's sum it up

The Nissan Terrano and Renault Duster cars presented for comparison, after what we learned about them, make quite a positive impression. Questions: Which is better? and What to choose? Still very individual. There are differences between cars. If you need a car that is more suitable for city roads, then it is better to choose a Japanese model, but if you prefer to travel outside the city, then it is better to choose a French crossover.

So, we compared the two models, found out what their difference is, how they differ from each other. There is no clear answer that it is better to buy. Each future owner must compare all factors and choose the most suitable car.

It is quite a difficult task even in our time. The range of affordable SUVs is constantly expanding, making the purchasing process challenging. At the same time, groups of leaders and outsiders are being formed in the Russian market. Taking into account consumer reviews, expert opinions, and the conclusions of various authoritative auto publications, gradually undesirable and downright unsuccessful models are eliminated.

As a result, there are several potential candidates left to get into your garage. If we talk about inexpensive, and rather even budget crossovers, then the Nissan Terrano and Renault Duster models are mandatory candidates for consideration. Many people know the history of these two cars and the close connection between them. But at the same time, the cars are not identical, and therefore comparing them will allow us to determine who in the end turned out to be better. This will also simplify your task of choosing a crossover, help you make a decision faster and spend your money wisely. The final decision is yours, and you must also make your own conclusions based on the information received.

Car Features

When asked how the Renault Duster differs from the Japanese Nissan Terrano, many will mockingly say that it is nothing. Allegedly, these are two identical crossovers, between which there are no differences, other than appearance. We can agree that the cars are similar in some respects. But they also have many differences.

Renault Duster belongs to the category of front- and all-wheel drive budget cars. Moreover, this is one of the cheapest cars in its segment among European SUVs. At the same time, the car has good design solutions and equipment.

The second generation of Renault Duster is considered relevant, the official presentation of which took place online. This happened in November 2017. The new generation has received an updated appearance, a completely redesigned exterior, improved technical features and an expanded list of equipment.

The basis for the creation of the 2nd generation Duster is the budget B0 trolley, in which the engine is located transversely, and a front independent suspension with a transverse stabilizer and hydraulic shock absorbers is used. At the rear, the front-wheel drive version has a semi-independent suspension with a torsion beam, while the all-wheel drive version uses an independent multi-link design.

Now you can compare the presented characteristics of the Renault Duster crossover with the parameters that the Nissan Terrano can offer.

The Japanese crossover is also a representative of the budget class and has front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The official presentation took place in Mumbai in 2013. Already at that time it was the 3rd generation Terrano. This is a redesigned version and a slightly more prestigious variation of the Renault Duster. It is also interesting that initially the Nissan Terrano was going to be sold only on the Indian market. But in the spring of 2014, the model finally reached Russia.

Only in the spring of 2016 the update took place. There were no changes in terms of appearance. But they improved the interior, modified the engines, added new options and raised the price.

The chassis from Renault Duster was used as a platform, that is, the engine is also oriented transversely. At the front of the crossovers there are classic independent designs with MacPherson struts, complemented by anti-roll bars. At the rear there is a semi-independent system with front-wheel drive, or a multi-link design with coil springs if the drive is four-wheel drive.

Exterior

It is already clear that in technical terms the machines are very similar. There is nothing surprising about this, since Nissan took the Duster as a basis and created its own version of an inexpensive crossover around it. Whether this is good or bad, judge for yourself. But given the level of reliability and durability of the Duster, as for a budget car, which has been demonstrating this for several years now, this is a very thoughtful decision on Nissan's part.

The difference between the Nissan Terrano and Renault Duster starts with the appearance. This is where the first serious differences between two potentially identical vehicles appear.

The new generation of Duster turned out to be much more interesting and prettier than its predecessor. But the surprising thing here is that with a completely new exterior, Duster managed to maintain a recognizable image. Judging by the sales, this was only beneficial. Although some were expecting something more modern and bold.

The Duster looks most attractive from the front. This is due to the original optics, radiator grille, powerful bumper, beautiful hood, etc. If you look at it from other angles, there are no significant complaints about the car. Yes, this is not an extravagant and cutting-edge SUV. But the goals for Duster are different. This is a workhorse, the most practical car, created for not the best roads and not the most favorable operating conditions. An excellent car for a summer residence, fishing and hunting, transporting building materials and other similar activities. And not for fashion shows and driving exclusively on smooth asphalt.

The exterior of the Nissan Terrano objectively looks better. And even against the background of the second generation. It cannot be compared with the first Duster Terrano at all, but the second generation turned out to be more interesting and modern, due to which it is significantly closer to its Japanese counterpart.

But the Terrano is still a little ahead in appearance. The car is bright and looks richer. Although finding common features will not be difficult. The connection with Duster is especially clear when viewed in profile. A certain similarity with the Pathfinder allows the Terrano to attract an additional audience who like massive and aggressive SUVs.

It will also be interesting to look at the dimensions of the two cars.

For Nissan Terrano they are as follows:

  • length 4342 mm;
  • height 1668 mm;
  • width 1822 mm;
  • wheelbase 2674 mm;
  • ground clearance from 205 to 210 mm.

We add that the ground clearance can be 205 or 210 mm. depending on the drive. It is smaller, and with all-wheel drive another 5 mm is added.

Renault Duster meets the following parameters:

  • length 4340 mm;
  • width 1800 mm;
  • height 1665 mm;
  • wheelbase 2674 mm;
  • ground clearance 210 mm.

And there is noticeable equality. Even though the Terrano looks a little prettier, but this is rather a subjective opinion. Some consumers like Renault much better. Therefore, you need to look for what else there is a really noticeable difference between the Nissan Terrano and Renault Duster.

Interior and luggage compartment

After the generation change, the Duster has noticeably changed not only externally, but also internally. As before, it is no longer possible to call it a full-fledged budget employee when looking at the interior. Yes, this is not a standard interior at all, but everything looks much more attractive and modern.

The driver receives a multifunctional steering wheel, an easy-to-read dashboard, and a stylish on-board computer display. The center console can accommodate a solid 7-inch multimedia system screen. Plus, the interior received, although not the most expensive, but quite high-quality finishing materials.

The Duster interior is designed for 5 seats, and even 3 adults can comfortably fit in the back row. Only the passenger in the center will probably be a little disturbed by the high central tunnel. At the same time, the sofa is moderately hard, comfortable, and offers plenty of space in the legs and above the head. In front there are 2 comfortable chairs with the possibility of individual customization.

The luggage compartment of the Renault Duster in traveling condition has 467 liters with all-wheel drive and 478 liters with the front-wheel drive version. When the rear row is folded, luggage space increases to 1623 liters.

Now let's see what differences the Terrano has compared to the Renault Duster. The Terrano interior was made inexpensive, but stylish and attractive. Moreover, the last renovation of the interior was carried out in 2017. An informative dashboard, a comfortable, slightly puffy multi-function steering wheel, a vertical center console with the ability to place a 7-inch touchscreen on it. The finishing materials are budget, although some inserts allow you to perceive the interior as more expensive than it actually is.

The salon has five seats, with sufficient space. The only problem is that the seats are too flat, and there is almost no lateral support in front. At the same time, the range of adjustments is extensive.

The standard trunk capacity is 408 liters for the all-wheel drive version, and 475 liters for the front-wheel drive version. By folding the rear row, the driver gets 1570 and 1646 liters of free space, respectively.

Comparing components such as the interior and luggage compartment allows you to determine your favorite. It turned out to be the new Renault Duster. Still, the restyling of the Terrano has an effect, and not a full-fledged change of generations, like the Duster. Comparing the previous generation of Duster with the current Terrano, the Japanese crossover would unconditionally become the winner of this comparison. But now Terrano is playing the role of catching up. Moreover, he is not coping with this role very well at the moment.

Motors and gearboxes

It’s difficult to say for sure which is better, the Japanese Nissan Terrano or the French Renault Duster. Too little information.

Therefore, it is worth moving on to the technical aspects of these cars. Namely, let's talk about the differences that are hidden in the engine compartment of the Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano. Let's look at engines, gearboxes and their capabilities.

Nissan Terrano is presented on the Russian market with two gasoline engines.

  1. The base is a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine with 114 horsepower and 156 Nm of torque. Combined with manual transmission. Moreover, for front-wheel drive it is a 5-speed manual transmission, and for all-wheel drive a six-speed manual transmission is available. Acceleration from zero to hundreds takes from 10.9 to 12.5 seconds. The maximum speed is 167 kilometers per hour. In the combined cycle, the engine with gearboxes will consume 7.4-7.6 liters of fuel.
  2. The top-end engine is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine. It produces 143 horsepower and 195 Nm of torque. A 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic is available here. But if with a younger engine you can choose between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, here there is no alternative to all-wheel drive. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 10.7-11.5 seconds. The maximum speed does not go beyond 180 kilometers per hour. Consumption is slightly higher, and in the combined cycle ranges from 7.8 to 8.7 liters of gasoline per 100 km. ways.

Despite the generation change, they did not offer new engines for the Renault Duster. Therefore, the line of power units remains the same.

The most interesting thing here is that Nissan not only took the platform, but also borrowed the engines from the Duster. As a result, the two internal combustion engines presented above are also installed on the Renault Duster. The dynamics, maximum speed and acceleration of the cars are almost identical, given the almost identical dimensions and weight of the crossovers.

But Renault Duster has one important trump card. And it's called a diesel engine. The Terrano does not have a diesel version. At least for the Russian market. And Duster, in addition to two gasoline internal combustion engines, also offers a 1.5-liter engine with a power of 90 and 110 horsepower, which runs on diesel. Engine output depends on the degree of boost. The 90-horsepower version has 200 Nm of torque, and for the 110-horsepower version the torque is increased to 240 Nm.

For diesel engines, they offer a manual gearbox and a 6-speed preselective robot. Moreover, you can choose from front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

All-wheel drive in combination with a 110 horsepower diesel engine allows you to get a very playful and high-torque car. With this Duster you can tow heavy trailers and travel in harsh conditions.

Everyone can decide for themselves what is better for them - Renault Duster or Nissan Terrano. There is no point in comparing petrol versions since they are identical. At the same time, the Frenchman offers a diesel and very reliable engine, which the Japanese are unable to oppose.

If we talk about the differences in terms of engines, gearboxes and their capabilities, then it would be more correct to put an equal sign between the Renault Duster and the Nissan Terrano. But I still want to give preference to the Duster due to the diesel engine.

Passability and controllability

Both cars have identical technical components. In both cases, the cars are not adapted for active and fast driving, as evidenced by low-power engines. Crossovers drive about the same. At high speeds there is no need to talk about stability; taking sharp turns at speed is scary in places. At its 100-130 kilometers per hour, there are no complaints. Accelerating faster, the driver is unlikely to feel comfortable.

In the city, crossovers behave well, maneuvering confidently. The steering wheel is obedient, although sometimes there is a lack of reaction speed. But for state employees, and even for SUVs, this is forgivable. It is difficult to give two cars a score higher than 3.5 points for handling.

As for cross-country ability, everything is a little more interesting here. Both cars have the same all-wheel drive. But the Terrano received lower overhangs, which is why the Japanese does not pass through difficult sections as confidently as the Frenchman. But the difference is insignificant. Both cars feel great in off-road conditions, country roads and unpaved surfaces. These are real workhorses that fully justify their name.

Although these are compact and budget SUVs, both cars receive 5 points for cross-country ability. They actually have no competitors in their class.

Security and electronic assistants

There is no need to say that the Renault Duster or Nissan Terrano are equipped with a wide range of all kinds of equipment aimed at increasing the safety of the driver, passengers and pedestrians. If we compare the versions current in 2019, then Duster still has a slight advantage.

The thing is that the Terrano base has only 2 airbags and ABS. But the updated Duster from the start will have front and rear airbags, curtain airbags, and a kit consisting of ESP, ABS and EBD.

So the French crossover wins here again. Terrano is grazing the rear for now.

Repair and service

The big advantage of these two machines is that technically they will rarely need to be serviced and repaired. Cars simply do not break down when used adequately. The service life of the engines allows them to travel 200-300 thousand kilometers before the first more or less significant malfunctions appear. Boxes also last 150 thousand kilometers or more.

In terms of service, the French automaker offers a more affordable car. This becomes obvious when looking at the price tags of the cars, which you will learn about a little later. Nissan is a more elite brand, and the Terrano name has a history, unlike Duster. That is, here we have a clear example of how a name makes a car more expensive.

The difference is not huge, but still Duster owners get another reason to realize the correctness of their choice.

To summarize, in the confrontation between Duster VS Terrano, the representative of the French automaker wins the next round.

Cost and options

The current version of Terrano is offered in 4 trim levels. The basic one costs from 980 thousand rubles. And it will include:

  • 2 airbags;
  • air conditioner;
  • power steering;
  • electric windows for front doors;
  • steering column height adjustment;
  • audio system with 4 speakers;
  • light alloy wheels (previously there were steel wheels), etc.

Top versions cannot be purchased for less than 1.27 million rubles. But you can get 4 airbags, ABS, EBD and ESP, a leather interior, rear parking sensors, heated front seats, a multimedia system and much more.

Now feel the difference. Sales of the updated Renault Duster began only in 2019 in Russia. At the same time, the basic equipment costs from 700 thousand rubles. The top-end package, excluding some additional options that are not included in the standard kits, will cost 1.1 million rubles.

From the start, Duster receives:

  • ABS, EBD and ESP;
  • front airbags;
  • side curtain airbags;
  • fabric interior;
  • audio system with 4 speakers;
  • front electric windows, etc.

The Duster has little equipment, but it is richer in the basic configuration. When the generation changed, the French added a new multimedia complex, a push-button engine start system, blind spot monitoring systems, light and rain sensors, panoramic cameras, climate control and much more. If all this can be purchased for 1.1-1.2 million rubles, then some simply do not see the point in considering Terrano as an alternative option.

Who to give preference

Now it’s time to take stock and decide which is better to choose between the Nissan Terrano and Renault Duster.

Initially, the comparison began as a study of two approximately identical cars, one of which is positioned as more elite and expensive. But as we studied all the parameters and characteristics, it became clear that the Terrano had no expected advantage over the Duster.

Moreover, many consumers do not even have doubts about what is better for them to buy when the Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano are offered to choose from. They don't think twice about buying a Duster. And this is a completely obvious, justified and reasonable decision. Duster is cheaper in price, after the generation change it is not inferior in appearance to its conventional competitor, and has a more modern and comfortable interior. The similarities in technical characteristics still bring the Duster ahead, since it is additionally offered with a diesel power unit with excellent parameters.

So it turns out that you have to overpay for the Terrano, having the opportunity to buy a cheaper one, and in most respects superior to its Japanese clone, Duster.

How objective and fair such conclusions are is for you to judge. But Nissan objectively needs to prepare a new generation as soon as possible, or carry out a deep restyling in order to at least equal the capabilities of the current generation of Duster. Plus, it’s probably worth thinking about changing your pricing policy.

A clear indicator that the Terrano is inferior to the Duster is the sales statistics. Duster has been a bestseller in recent years, while the number of Terrano models sold is depressing.

Children's magazines often publish attentiveness tests - two pictures that are absolutely identical at first glance, between which you need to find ten differences. Here the window is open, but there it is not. Here the girl has a polka dot skirt, and there she has a plain skirt. To notice all this sometimes you have to spend a good ten minutes. The same situation applies to compact crossovers and. Both cars are built on the same platform and are equipped with the same power units and transmissions. So in technical terms, Duster and Terrano are like those two pictures - you still have to look for ten differences.

They tried to distribute these cars to different corners of the market using design. Renault Duster, which was updated just a month ago, began to look a little more aggressive than the pre-restyling version. The car has a fine-mesh radiator grille, on which there is a large corporate emblem, and quite aggressive front optics. Renault designers also worked on the rear of the car. New S-shaped lights made the appearance of the French crossover a little more stylish. But in general, even after the update, Renault Duster remained itself - a nice little car, which, thanks to its high body and developed wheel arches, looks much more expensive than its real cost. And this is precisely what attracts many buyers.

The co-platform appeared on the market later than the Renault Duster. So it still has to undergo restyling. In the meantime, we have to state the fact that the Terrano, even without the update, looks angrier and more aggressive than the French crossover. Thank you for this is the signature “Nissan” radiator grille, which can be found on other SUVs and crossovers of the Japanese company, and the angular optics. In the first minutes of meeting the Nissan Terrano, you may get the impression that it has nothing in common with the Renault Duster. But once you look at the car from the side, everything will fall into place. Common body panels, already familiar developed wheel arches, almost identical dimensions, differing by a few millimeters due to different bumpers, absolutely the same profile. There are many more similarities than differences.

Inside, the two crossovers have even more in common. Only a blind person could fail to notice that their front panel has exactly the same shape. Although the designers still tried to add at least a bit of individuality to the interiors of the Duster and Terrano. If in the “French” the ventilation system deflectors are round in shape, then in the Terrano they are already rectangular. Otherwise everything is very similar.

Even after the update, Renault Duster did not differ radically from Nissan. Although, it should be noted, the modernization carried out was beneficial for the French crossover. He got rid of the archaic instrument cluster, which was installed on the first generation Renault Logan, and received in return new, quite nice scales in the “wells”. Buyers of the French crossover should also be pleased that the horn button has finally moved from the end of the steering column lever to its usual place. The glossy finish of the center console also deserves praise. Thanks to her, the latter no longer seems so dull. But all this will appear in the updated Terrano.

Interior of Nissan Terrano

There is no excess space on the second row of seats in both cars. So, we are not talking about full-size crossovers, but about compact crossovers. They can easily be forgiven for the lack of free space between the knees of tall passengers and the backs of the front seats. You shouldn’t criticize the luggage racks that are not too voluminous either. They in Duster and Terrano have the same volume - 475 liters. If the need arises to transport something really bulky, you can always fold down the rear seat backs. Then the owner of the crossover, in this case no matter what brand, will already have 1570 liters of free space at his disposal.

Before the Renault Duster update, the base for both crossovers was exactly the same - front-wheel drive and a manual gearbox. All this is combined with a naturally aspirated petrol engine, which, with a volume of 1.6 liters, develops 102 horsepower. However, during the restyling, the engine installed on the French crossover underwent a slight modernization, which increased its power to 114 horsepower. But the Nissan Terrano still remains with a 102-horsepower power unit. Another thing is that this state of affairs will not last long. There is no doubt that Terrano will soon undergo a slight modernization. At the same time, and perhaps even earlier, it will acquire the same version of the engine that is currently installed on the Duster.

But even now, comparing the dynamic characteristics of the two crossovers is almost pointless. If they differ, it will be by some tenths of a second, which is simply impossible to feel in real conditions. In terms of numbers, it looks like this: a Renault Duster with front-wheel drive and a manual transmission, with the most intense acceleration, will reach the first hundred kilometers per hour in 11.8 seconds, and the Terrano during the same time, in the worst case, will lag behind it by half a body. The same gap will remain if we compare versions with all-wheel drive. Although acceleration to hundreds will not be so intense - 12.8 seconds. The situation is similar with fuel consumption. A front-wheel drive Renault Duster with a 1.6-liter engine will consume an average of 9.6 l/100 km in the city. Nissan Terrano will burn 9.8 liters of gasoline over the same distance.

When updating the Renault Duster, the two-liter gasoline engine was also modified. If on Nissan it produces 135 horsepower, then on Renault its power is already 143 “horses”. The difference of eight horsepower seems noticeable on paper, but in reality it is very problematic to feel it. The two-liter Nissan Terrano with all-wheel drive and automatic transmission reaches the first hundred kilometers per hour 11.2 seconds after the start, and the Renault Duster does this exercise even a little slower - in 11.5 seconds. And the fuel consumption of the two-liter Terrano is supposedly less - 11 l/100 km versus 11.2 l/100 km for the Renault Duster. But is this the difference that can tip the scales in favor of one of the cars? Hardly. And so it is in everything. Whatever the indicator, the difference between Duster and Terrano tends to zero.

Video: Why Terrano is better than Duster

Although there is still one difference, and a very serious one, between these cars. The thing is that another engine is offered for the Renault Duster, which is not available for the Nissan Terrano in principle. We are talking about a 1.5-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 109 horsepower. In combination with it, the French offer only a manual gearbox. And for those who do not have a dislike for diesel cars, the Duster with this power unit can be recommended without any doubt. Acceleration to one hundred kilometers per hour, which with a “diesel” under the hood takes an endlessly long 14.9 seconds, is of course not impressive, but in urban conditions the diesel engine will outperform many gasoline power units due to its amazing traction. If you don’t set yourself the goal of always moving with the accelerator pedal fully depressed, then the dynamics of the diesel Renault Duster are enough for the eyes. And in terms of fuel consumption, the diesel Renault Duster is quite a pleasant shock - only 5.8 l/100 km in the urban cycle.

Albeit with difficulty, you can find ten differences between the Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano. And even then, many of them appeared only after the update of the French crossover. So those who choose between these two cars should compare not seconds, kilometers per hour and liters, but also the level of their equipment. Since the Nissan Terrano is positioned as a slightly more premium car, it costs a little more. This can be considered the main difference.
